NCAA tournament 2011: Georgetown, Kansas resume comparison

By Eric Prisbell

[Note: If you are planning to run an NCAA tournament office pool or a pool among friends, please contact me via e-mail. I'd like to hear from you about your pool. I'm not quoting you or anything; I'm just interested in your thoughts about an idea I have. prisbelle@washpost.com.
Thanks.]

I'm driving from NYC to Hartford in about an hour to get ready for Georgetown's game at Connecticut...but I wanted to get a sense of how far away the Hoyas are from being a No. 1 seed right now. In my view, Texas and Ohio State are the two best teams in the country. So let's compare Georgetown's profile to that of Kansas.

Georgetown
Record: 20-5
RPI: 5
SOS: 3
Vs. top 50: 8-5
Vs. top 100: 13-5
Best win: St. John's (15)
Worst loss: at Temple (34)
Road-neutral court: 10-3
As of today: 2/3 seed

Kansas
Record: 24-2
RPI: 1
SOS: 11
Vs. top 50: 6-2
Vs. top 100: 13-2
Best win: vs. Arizona (17)
Worst loss: at Kansas State (32)
Road-neutral court: 10-1
As of today: 1 seed

It's fairly close. But the bottom line is that the Hoyas have a few more losses than the Jayhawks. So even though they are playing as well as anyone in the country right now, edge goes to Kansas. For now.

With the hoyas getting ready for a big game tonight, here's what I see. If Georgetown can add another big win to their resume over 12 UCONN, it would set the stage for a huge four game stand. USF, Syracuse and Cincinati twice. Possibly finishing the season in the top 5 and jumping over BYU and San Diego St. due to power of schedule and conference. Therefore, if Georgetown wins the Big East tournament, there a #1, win at least the first two and there a #2. Should be interesting.

Georgetown's best win was Villanova ranked #8 not St. Johns. They also beat #12 Syracuse, #9 Missouri, Louisville and Memphis all of whom are ranked higher than St. Johns. Do the editors check blog posts? That's a pretty amateur mistake.

It makes me question the Kansas info as well....
