NCAA tournament 2011: St. Mary's-VCU resume comparison

By Eric Prisbell

This is a difficult call. Many people just tossed Virginia Commonwealth aside when it lost to Old Dominion in the CAA tournament final. That may have been premature. St. Mary's is one of the last four in on most people's mock bracket today. Why are the Gaels in over VCU? You could make the case they have three fewer losses and played a tougher non-conference schedule. But you could also make the case for VCU and say that St. Mary's has the most dreadful loss of any potential at-large team and that VCU beat two likely single-digit seeds in ODU and George Mason. St. Mary's actually has a home game today against Weber State; we'll see how they'll do there. What's your call on the St. Mary's-VCU debate?

St. Mary's
Record: 22-8
RPI: 47
SOS: 100 (35 in non-conference)
Vs. top 50: 1-4
Vs top 100: 3-6
Best wins: St. John's (25), at Gonzaga (57), vs. Long Beach State (89)
Worst losses: San Diego (317), at Portland (108), Gonzaga (57)
True road record: 6-4
Neutral court: 4-2
Last 10: 6-4

VCU
Record: 23-11
RPI: 50
SOS: 86 (118 in non-conference)
Vs. top 50: 3-5
Vs. top 100: 8-8
Best wins: at Old Dominion (21), vs. George Mason (26), vs. UCLA
Worst losses: Georgia State (224), at Northeastern (179) at South Florida (154)
True road record: 8-6
Neutral court: 4-2
Last 10: 5-5

Comments

VCU played a tougher schedule (SOS 86), winning 11 of 13 games vs teams in the top 100, including winning 3 of 5 vs the top 50 teams. St. Mary's? (SOS 100) - They won a mere 4 out of 10 games vs top 100 competition, beating only 1 of their 4 games vs top 50 competition. Simply put, VCU has the better credentials and this suggests they will contribute a higher level of play to the tournament. Ultimately, viewers want to watch the best teams when it comes to at large competitors.
