NCAA tournament 2011: Villanova, Texas continue to slide

By Eric Prisbell

March is here, everyone. By the end of the month, just four teams will still be playing. It is going to be a wild ride.

What mattered Monday:

Notre Dame 93, Villanova 72: The Irish made a school-record 20 three-pointers and moved closer to securing a No. 2 seed in the NCAA tournament. Before you crown the Irish a Final Four favorite, just keep in mind that it has been a world-beater at home this season. Ben Hansbrough, who had 30 points and 10 assists, should be Big East player of the year. As for Villanova, the Wildcats are fading fast and are now eying a No. 6 or No. 7 seed.

Kansas State 75, Texas 70: What a season for Kansas State, which went from preseason favorite to NIT favorite and to now a red-hot team capable of making a run in the NCAAs. Texas, which has lost three of four games, has dropped from a No. 1 seed projection. How far can the Longhorns fall? They close the regular season playing at desperate Baylor on Saturday.

What to watch for Tuesday:

Boston College at Virginia Tech: Despite Dick Vitale's postgame proclamation Saturday, the Hokies have more work to do to reach the NCAA tournament. They need to win one of their last two regular season games. A loss here would give life to Boston College, which has moved out of the tournament field after being in good shape for most of the season.

Alabama at Florida: These teams are tied for the best record in SEC play (11-3), but they are facing two different situations. Florida is a solid NCAA tournament team. The Crimson Tide, which has overcome a poor nonconference showing, needs a quality win to show the selection committee that an SEC West team is for real.

Ohio State at Penn State: The Nittany Lions need this to bolster their slim NCAA tournament at-large hopes. The way this regular season has gone, anything is possible.
