1,000 Words: The Stimulus

Earlier this afternoon, the House passed President Barack Obama's economic stimulus package -- without a single vote in favor of the plan from a Republican. Tonight, the Senate is expected to approve the legislation thanks to continued support of three Republicans -- Sens. Olympia Snowe (Maine), Susan Collins (Maine) and Arlen Specter (Pa.) -- for the bill.

The photo above was taken shortly after the House passed the bill this afternoon. Offer your best caption in the comments section below. We take all kinds of captions -- from the serious to the silly to the sublime. We'll sort through them and post the best of the best this weekend.

You have excellent points about Japan’s economy and its relationship to our current situation.

However the progressive stagflationists are not people who study history. They ignore and revise it.

A little history…

Jan. 8th, 2009
WASHINGTON - President-elect Barack Obama urged Congress Thursday to work with him “day and night, on weekends if necessary” to approve the largest taxpayer-funded stimulus ever, warning in almost apocalyptic terms that a dire economic future was certain without it.

Feb. 4th
“A failure to act, and act now, will turn crisis into a catastrophe and guarantee a longer recession, a less robust recovery, and a more uncertain future,” Obama said in his prepared remarks.”

Feb. 5th
Obama also reiterated his contention that inaction is not an option, saying that if the legislation is not enacted quickly “an economy that is already in crisis will be faced with catastrophe.”

Feb. 6th
“This is not some abstract debate,” he said during an address to employees at the Energy Department. “The time for talk is over. The time for action is now.”

Feb. 9th
He (Pres. Obama ) said the recession has left the nation so weak that only the federal government can “jolt our economy back to life.” And he declared that failure to act swiftly and boldly “could turn a crisis into a catastrophe.”

“The party now is over,” he said.

Feb 13th Bill Passed

Feb 14th Vacation

Feb 15th Vacation

Feb 16th Holiday

Feb 17th Show Time

From Obama’s own web page:

(1) SUNLIGHT BEFORE SIGNING: Too often bills are rushed through Congress and to thepresident before the public has the opportunity to review them. As president, BarackObama will not sign any non-emergency bill without giving the American public anopportunity to review and comment on the White House website for five days. Inaddition to ensuring that the public has the ability to review legislation, the sunlight willhelp ensure that earmarks tucked into appropriations bills are exposed. And Obama willsign legislation in the light of day without attaching signing statements that undermine
the legislative intent.

Hey Fix.

I haven't read the post above yet, but no matter -- this comment doesn't relate to it.

I just want to say that I hope you and "Mrs. Fix" have a wonderful time over the next few weeks and months, encompassing as they do the birth of your first child.

I'm a DC insider myself, so I know how easy it is to fall into the world of DC-ism, which is not only excessively combative and fast-paced for my taste, but also as you know often very cynical.

For me, there is nothing more joy-inducing and hopeful than losing one's self in the infinity of my own young baby's eyes.

And so I hope you will take time to enjoy every millisecond of the next few wonderful months of your own child's life.

Sincerely,

This is coming from an independent so enough with the name calling and blah blah blah. Let's face the facts of this porkulus and bailout of the elite bankers. Those in favor of this is in favor of the failed Bush policies. So you Obama supporters who bashed Bush and all that is wrong with the Republican party, guess what you are supporting more of the same. Bush wanted the money for the rich and Obama is serving the rich our money on a silver platter. Brings in Geithner who was owned by these same bankers as President of the New York Federal Reserve who's private owners are huge domestic and international banks who we bailed out and he is in control of handing money to, ummm maybe a bit of a conflict of interest? Dascle doesn't pay taxes and it is a mistake, but this POS doesn't pay his and he is a "genius"???? This bailout will cause 1 of 2 things. 1 hyperinflation as our money is worth a finite amount will be spread over more dollars which causes each dollar to be worth less causing prices of items to go up. 2 this will put more control of our government in the hands of the people who caused this issue. That is not good for republicans, democrats or independents like myself. Read this article http://www.nytimes.com/2009/02/13/business/economy/13yen.html?em which is about how Japan went through this same issue and took the same steps with bank bailouts that lead to their 15+ year depression that they still have not recovered from. We need to let the bad banks fail and let housing prices fall take a year or two of recession. If not and we continue this path like Japan did we will be hurting for a lot longer. History is on my side with my statement so do not bother with attacks. If you can rationally respond with facts from real sources I do want to hear.

Winners: President OBAMA and the Democrats
Susan Collans,Arlen Spector,Olympia Snow
States of Maine and Pennsylvania

Loosers: The Republicans and Judd Gregg
Sadly the states the Republicans
who voted against stimulus
came from. Foxnews,Hannity
O'Reilly Factor, Glenn Beck
Rush Lim, Mitch McConnel
Eric Cantor, Gov Pawty of Minn should turn down any money from the stimulus since he and the rest of these nuckle head Republicans were against helping America.

The Republicans as well as FOXNEWS needs to hide under a cave for the next 8 years or so. I hear tha the OBAMA Administration is working on blocking and removing FOXNEWS from its press coverage and also doing the census. The only saving grace and bright side to the Republicans are Susan Collins, Arlen Spector and Olympia Snow. They could decide to rid themselves of the party and change to Independant.

Republicans are the party of no. I'm so tired of watching mostly republicans on TV complaining about bi-partisanship when they won't participate. The Republican Governors, meanwhile, support the bill and will be happy to spend the money to create jobs (and up the GNP) in their home states.

Can you believe this? The Senate has 59 votes right now towards the 60 it needs to pass this bill. Number 60 is away to a wake for his mother. He will have to make the trip back to Washington from Ohio to cast the 60th vote. Not a single Republican, not one, had the decency to say "I do not believe in this bill but the guy will not have to return from his mothers funeral, I will switch my vote." Can you believe the callousness of this bunch? Not one!! And Obama wants to be nice to this bunch. I say ram your programs through with the votes you have now and to hell with the rest of them. The people voted in November, they want change , they want Obama and not more of the same rotten no good programs of tax cuts and more tax cuts.
