Kentucky primary: Grayson accuses Paul supporters of intimidating voters

The Post has reporters in three states covering Tuesday's elections. Read today's feeds on the Pennsylvania Democratic Senate primary, the Arkansas Senate Democratic primary, the the Kentucky Republican Senate primary, and the Pennsylvania 12 special election. See also Monday's feeds on: the Pennsylvania Democratic Senate primary, the Pennsylvania 12th District special election, the Kentucky Republican Senate primary, and the Arkansas Senate Democratic primary.

Kentucky Secretary of State Trey Grayson is accusing ophthalmologist Rand Paul's (R) campaign of conducting a "widespread voter interrogation scheme" as voters go to the polls today in the primary for retiring Sen. Jim Bunning's (R) seat.

Grayson's campaign issued a memo to reporters this afternoon highlighting a document it claims Paul's campaign has been distributing to supporters. The Paul campaign document instructs supporters to check voting machines before polls opened at 6 a.m. and "attempt to determine that all voting machines are set to zero."

The document (PDF) also directs Paul supporters to conduct exit polling as voters leave the polls from 8-9 a.m. and 12-1 p.m., make GOTV calls in afternoon, and then return to the polling places at 5:45 p.m. and "identify yourself as a representative of the Rand Paul campaign who will be witnessing the vote counting." It also instructs supporters to "immediately call the election hotline" to report any "irregularities."

According to the Grayson's team's memo, trained challengers "would be allowed into polling locations, but not for the purposes of inspecting voting machines or watching the vote counting." The memo also claims that "it appears that most incidents involving the Paul campaign do not involve qualified challengers, but instead they're supporters who have received the illegal instructions from Rand Paul."

The Lexington Herald-Leader reported this afternoon that as of 12:45 p.m., the state election fraud hotline had received 41 calls including "allegations of vote buying" and "voter intimidation," and that "many of the calls" involved Paul's campaign.

Paul campaign manager David Adams called the allegations "absurd" and said the campaign is "secure in where we are on the law."

"Anybody can file a complaint about anything," Adams said, adding that the campaign is "very confident" in the way it's been conducting its GOTV operation.

@WD1214 - you might want to get your facts straight - In 2000, it was only in Democratic governed Counties in which there was "ballot confusion

Actually, you might want to get you facts straight. Florida was handed to Bush by the SCOTUS in 2,000, but I was referring to the Blackwell/Diebolt electronic voting machines in Ohio and Florida(Ooh GWB's brother was gov and Kathryn Harris was a partisan hack who was supposed to be impartial). The machines were tampered with in seveal locations and there are plenty of dowubts about other ones. It is disengenuous for Diebolt(a major Republican donor and maker of ATMS) to claim that is was too difficult to create paper receipts for voting machines when they make them for ATMs.

The Pauls; Rand, Ron, and Saint

Posted by: mjcc1987 | May 19, 2010 12:26 PM | Report abuse

First Grayson complains that Paul was "endorsed" by Fox News - now Paul's attempt to ensure that voter fraud doesn't take place is his most recent "whine"....the people spoke - time for the endorsed Machine's candidate to go away and be quiet.

@WD1214 - you might want to get your facts straight - In 2000, it was only in Democratic governed Counties in which there was "ballot confusion" - the butterfly ballot and the "hanging chad" ballots were all in those Democratic Counties. Most of Florida used "Bubble" ballots or "arrow" ballots in which it was very clear how to vote for the correct candidate. And Al Gore only wanted recounts in those Democratic run counties - funny how most "disasters" are in counties and states under Democratic governing (i.e. New Orleans La w/ Katrina)

@ akcoin.... lying us into a war that is, was costing us billions.

You might want to actually look at the statement Mrs. Clinton made about the very same intelligence she and her President Husband saw when Congress granted authority to Bush...along with the other Democrats who later claimed Bush "lied" because it had a political benefit to them...which you continue to prove with your statements.....IF Bush had actually lied us into war do you really believe that he would not have been removed from office? Wake up.

.....By taking away habeas corpus from us.

By this statement I presume that you mean the Patriot Act - another "lie" of the Democrats for political gain - a lie proven by the very fact that YOUR President, who used it in his campaign, allowed it to continue from January 2009 to the present day.

.......Letting the oil companies do as they please.

The same agency that oversaw the Oil Companies and their drilling under Bush does so under Obama - and if you would take the time to listen to the hearings on the Gulf spill, you'd see that that agency let the companies "do as they please" under Obama as well.

......Outing a CIA agent.

Okay, so here once again, it is apparent that you take your news from blogs that agree with your position - since, no one was found guilty of "outing" a CIA agent - the only person jailed was jailed for misleading the investigators. And the woman supposedly outed did not serve in any covert way....another time the Democrats have used distortion of a particular event for political gain.

the usual sh*t from Rs:

'This is pretty sweet: a statement from President Obama blasting Republicans for defending the low liability limits that protect oil companies from paying for the economic damages caused by spills, costs that would instead be borne by taxpayers.

I am disappointed that an effort to ensure that oil companies pay fully for disasters they cause has stalled in the United States Senate on a partisan basis. This maneuver threatens to leave taxpayers, rather than the oil companies, on the hook for future disasters like the BP oil spill. I urge the Senate Republicans to stop playing special interest politics and join in a bipartisan effort to protect taxpayers and demand accountability from the oil companies.

As President Obama points out, if oil companies don't pay for the damage they cause, taxpayers will be left on the hook. That's effectively a big oil bailout, allowing oil companies to enjoy unlimited profits while accepting only limited risk. It's what Sarah Palin might call big oil bailout socialism -- if she weren't a flaming hypocrite.

Obama's statement comes as Republicans once again filibustered Democratic efforts to move forward on raising the liability limits. Meanwhile, Senate Democrats are rejecting a Republican counter-offer because they say it is doesn't hold oil companies accountable. "

5. Rand Paul lives here and works here. Trey Grayson jets in from 'somewhere'.

Dear Breathless Republican Ones:

Awaken yourselves from your wonderful dreams of pinning the BP oil spill on the President. It would be sweet if you could only have your dreams come true. You could finally say it was just like one of Bush's major failures: Katrina (why do Republicans always select one of the many Bush failures to try to really tar Obama?). Sure, it would be a sweet political win for you but it has to happen in the real world where there is factual information, not just lame spin. Remember the many uses of scientific studies that you find so frustrating - that information will determine what happened and I can say it doesn't look good for BP or your dreams.

I know given all this waking up is hard to do but join us...

It is clear that Obama was waiving many safety and environmental inspections -

Fact is, Rand Paul has way too much integrity to pull a hussein and steal an election with massive ACORN-type voter fraud.

That's another of the many differences between a patriotic American and a lunatic-left d-crat socialist.

I have to laugh a little at how some people are responding to this article. Anyone who lives here (Kentucky) has become aware of Grayson's horrible behavior as a sore loser. It's embarrassing and it has cost him votes in his already sagging campaign. Then I read a post that is derogatory and prejudice regarding "tea-baggers." The tea party movement started years ago, it's nothing new, it's just growing. It simply stands for government accountability, people tired of overtaxation and feeling our leaders are not representing the people. It has attracted libertarians, republicans and democrats and when I read people call it "right wing nuts" I realize how out of touch they are and they really don't know what it is.

What are Paul supporters doing that is illegal?:

Deputies called to remove campaign workers

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- State and local officials say backers of Republican U.S. Senate candidate Rand Paul have been removed by sheriff's deputies from an eastern Kentucky polling place after complaints that they were harassing voters.

Officials say Paul supporters were also asked to leave precincts in another county Tuesday while conducting exit polling.

Paul's campaign manager, David Adams, called the allegations "dubious," saying Democrats may have been behind the incidents.

Secretary of State spokesman Les Fugate said voters complained of harassment and electioneering by Paul supporters in Laurel County and exit polling in Jackson County. Secretary of State Trey Grayson is Paul's primary opponent on the ballot.

Laurel County Clerk Dean Johnson confirmed that deputies were called to remove Paul supporters from a polling place and the incident remains under investigation.

Observer001 there are thousands of comedians out of work. Your material is weak. You may think it's funny to call people "tea baggers" while simultaneous accusing them of name-calling, but the irony will be too subtle for many Post readers. Either find some job that requires no intellect, like being a political pundit maybe, or stick with the fart jokes.

Oh, so NOW Republicans are worried about the security of our laughable insecure voting machings bought and paid for by the Republican Party. Has Diebolt turned on them now too? There's no possible way they could be tampered with right? Noneed for a receipt--machines can't dispense paper like that--what is it an ATM? Nothing to see her, now move along.

GRAYSON IS COMPLAINING THAT THE MACHINES BE CHECKED TO SEE IF THEY ARE AT ZERO ???

Who is causing the problem here?

IF YOU HAVE NOTHING TO HIDE, YOU WOULDN'T MIND PEOPLE CHECKING TO SEE IF THE MACHINES ARE AT ZERO.

In addition, who cares about EXIT polling ?

Intimidating voters has to take place BEFORE they vote.

Grayson DOESN'T BELONG IN THE SENATE AFTER THIS MEMO.

This development is not surprising. Tea bagger activity is characterized by threats, name-calling and intimidation. 'Course the fact that total wingnut Republicans are intimidating just regular wingnut Republicans does warm the cockles of this liberal Democrat's heart.

The allegations come from Les Fugate, Assistant Deputy to Paul's opponent Sec of State Tray Grayson, who is also Grayson's Campaign spokesperson. There may be a story there, Felicia. Uh, Felica? Felicia?! Chris? Anybody see Chris around?

Truly, this is a pitiful article used to discredit Dr. Paul's supporters and potential voters before the polls close. How much did his opponent bribe "the post" to publish such a biased piece?

Ahh, the death throws of the Grayson campaign grasping at straw's for that next breath.
You can bet whatever is happening Trey and his pro-establishment BIG gov. elites must absolutely despise anyone looking over their shoulder to keep this election honest!
Maybe Trey Grayson SHOULD have recused himself from counting his own ballot's as was requested early on in the campaign.

In launching a Web site aimed at educating the United States on Arizona's controversial illegal immigration law, Governor Jan Brewer (R-Ariz.) took umbrage with the president's joke at the recent White House Correspondents' Dinner. (Snip) ''It's fair to ask whether he intends to be the Commander-in-Chief or the Comic-in-Chief,'' Gov. Brewer said. ''Since the president's joke was so inappropriate, I suppose, if I wanted to join in the comedian game, I could suggest that he should not give up his day job.'' ,''Unfortunately, though, he isn't doing very well at that one, either,''

Nappy Hasn't Read SB 1070 Either

Until recently, Janet Napolitano was the Governor of Arizona. She now serves as the Director of Homeland Security. In light of her history and her responsibility for securing our borders, she rightly weighs in on Arizona's attempt to enforce federal immigration law — except that like Attorney General Eric Holder, she didn't even bother to read the brief and simple SB 1070 before plunging into the Obamunist propaganda blitz against it.

Spedman I mean Stedman and Crappy Nappy aren't alone. SB 1070 opponent Assistant Secretary of State P.J. Crowley admitted that he hasn't read it either.

Meanwhile treasonous State Department buffoons travel the world, apologizing to totalitarian dictatorships for Arizona's alleged crime against humanity.

It's almost as if these Obamabots are afraid that if they read the law, they'll have to admit there is absolutely nothing in it that any reasonable person could possibly object to.

California Is Going to Have to Boycott Itself

Someone read through the California Penal Code and found language virtually identical to the requirements of Arizona's SB1070 Law.

Every law enforcement agency in California shall fully cooperate with the United States Immigration and Naturalization Service regarding any person who is arrested if he or she is suspected of being present in the United States in violation of federal immigration laws. (b) With respect to any such person who is arrested, and suspected of being present in the United States in violation of federal immigration laws, every law enforcement agency shall do the following: (1) Attempt to verify the legal status of such person as a citizen of the United States, an alien lawfully admitted as a permanent resident, an alien lawfully admitted for a temporary period of time or as an alien who is present in the United States in violation of immigration laws. The verification process may include, but shall not be limited to, questioning the person regarding his or her date and place of birth, and entry into the United States, and demanding documentation to indicate his or her legal status.

So, will Los Angeles, San Fransicko, and San Diego now have to boycott California? Will dimwit governator Ahnuld Schwarzeneggar have to leave the state for fear of deportation? Can we call it "Nazi California?"

Grayson has based his whole campaign around nothing but lying about his opponent. Why should we believe him now? The last poll, which was conducted yesterday, showed Paul was ahead by 25%. Grayson must be dazed and confused. Who threw the monkey wrench in the political machine?

I'm confused, which act constitutes "voter intimidation" claimed by Grayson? Is it the exit polling or the legal vote challenges? Confirming the machines started at zero would not have been necessary had Kentucky Secretary of State Grayson recused himself from election oversight.

Widespread voter interrogation scheme? Is that what he calls exit polling?

When your opponent in a race overseas the election and is the boss of those running it, you have to expect fully legal exit polls.

He could always have recused himself.
