Daily Fix Poll: Will Jan Brewer's debate performance be a game-changer?
By Felicia Sonmez
Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer (R) turned in one of the most bizarre performances we've seen in recent years during Wednesday night's debate with state Attorney General Terry Goddard (D).
The question for Brewer going forward is, will her debate stumble cost her in the fall?
Ever since she signed Arizona's immigration law in April, Brewer has seen her popularity skyrocket. Her opponents in the Republican primary dropped out one-by-one, leaving Brewer to cruise to the nomination and, it seemed, to election in November. With all signs pointing to a Brewer blowout, the Fix moved the race from Toss Up to Lean Republican in July.
But sometimes, gaffes can damage -- and even sink -- the strongest of candidacies. Brewer has taken on a higher profile thanks to her role in the Arizona immigration debate, and her rise in the national eye has boosted her at home. Now, though, Brewer will have to grapple with the flip side of that heightened profile: increased scrutiny on the national stage.
Will Brewer's lapses during the debate give Arizona voters pause, or will they soon be forgotten? The comments section awaits.
