Clinton Debates Bush

If Obama and Edwards want to turn this debate into a fight between themselves and Clinton, the Democratic frontrunner seems to want to make the fight one between herself and the current president.

Hillary Clinton
Sen. Hillary Clinton sought to keep the debate's focus on President Bush.

In every answer in the debate so far, Clinton has referenced Bush and sought to paint the choice as between her plan for the country and Bush's policies.

Take her response to a question about next steps in Iraq. "I will begin to bring our troops home as soon as I am president because it has become abundantly clear President Bush does not plan to end the war when he is president," she said.

On Iran, Clinton again cast the debate between herself and the President as opposed to a debate among Democrats.

"Everybody agrees up here that Bush has made a total mess of the situation with Iran," she said.

Again, Clinton's strategy in this debate appears to be to avoid any direct confrontation with her rivals (despite them doing their damndest to engage her) and instead keep her eye on the lead bogeyman for Democratic voters -- President Bush.
