Rahm Emanuel Mulling Obama Job Offer

President-elect Barack Obama wasted no time in making his first personnel move, asking Illinois Rep. Rahm Emanuel to serve as his chief of staff. (AP Photo/Alex Brandon, File)

Rep. Rahm Emanuel, the fourth ranking Democrat in the House, is strongly considering an offer from President-elect Barack Obama to serve as White House chief of staff, according to Democratic sources.

Obama's offer comes less than 24 hours after he scored a sweeping victory over John McCain -- racking up 349 electoral votes (and counting).

Even before Obama had secured the presidency, rumors that he would choose Emanuel ran rampant among the political chattering class.

Emanuel is widely seen as one of the rising stars within the Democratic Party -- elected to a Chicago-area seat in 2002 and the chairman of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee in the 2006 election in which he led his party back to the majority.

Prior to coming to Congress, Emanuel was a senior staffer at the DCCC as well as in the Clinton White House. During that time, Emanuel built a reputation as one of the savviest political minds in the party and also one of the most confrontational and sharp elbowed. His tactics and approach earned him the name "Rahmbo."

By acting immediately to fill this important position Obama is showing that, as promised, he will move quickly to fill senior roles in his White House -- perhaps cognizant of the slow pace and struggles of former President Bill Clinton during his own transition process in 1992.

In pursuing Emanuel, Obama is also sending a message to Capitol Hill that he recognizes the need to work with them by selecting one of their own but that he also will not be afraid to play tough -- Emanuel's trademark.

On the political side, Emanuel's appointment will set off a special election in his heavily Democratic 5th district with a cavalcade of ambitious Democrats lining up to run. Among the names mentioned: Cook County commissioners Mike Quigley and Forrest Claypool, state Sen. Ira Silverstein, state Rep. John Fritchey, 38th Ward Alderman Tom Allen, Cook County Treasurer Maria Pappas, and 39th Ward Alderman Margaret Laurino.

Most profound comment I've seen. At the risk of sounding sexist this is something that one would expect from a "tiffany".

LEAPIN-
Actually, that does sound very sexist. I didn't see a single man who ever got derided simply for thinking Palin was hot. Usually, they got that treatment for thinking she was hot AND qualified.

That said, Rahm Emanual is hot. And my name, coincidentally, also happens to be Tiffany.

I hope Emanuel takes the job. I think Obama offered it to him because Emanuel is a winner who knows how to get things done. It isn't so much that Emanuel knows how to beat Republicans; he knows how to beat all challengers. Obama's plan isn't to bring in a guy who's loyal only to Democrats; he's bringing in a guy who's loyal to America. And don't fear, GOP, because Obama's looking to tap a few Republicans, too. Think Lincoln.

I've heard that old sow about Obama being born somewhere else but Hawaii for a year now. Some guy in Philly even went to court with supposed "proof." The judge looked at his "proof" and laughed him out of court after ordering him to pay all cost. You will hear this, rumors about women, him being a Muslim etc. etc. over and over again and again. It's like Hillary said about ten years ago: "There is a fast right wing conspiracy....etc." You know the rest. She was right than, (except not about the particular issue at hand) and us liberals are right now. There are forces at work that will do anything, anything to see this good man fail. It's up to him not to give them any reason, like Clinton did. It's up to the rest of us to see this crap for what it is. A big pile of Bull Sh*t!!! and call them on it. It's only one day after the election and it's already looking the same.

Rep. Rahm Emmanuel, who was just offered the position of Chief of Staff, likes to thwart the will of the people by preselecting who he and Sen. Schumer feel worthy of winning Democratic Primary Elections. Those two prefer to see uncontested primaries, so there is no proper voter scrutiny and vetting of the final candidate. This could open up their top-down strategy to overlook fatal flaws.

Those primary elections are none of their affair. The successful candidates should owe their loyalty to the citizens of their respective voting districts, not the self designated leaders of the Democratic Party.

I am just as tired of the top-down DINO-Fascists as I am of the top-down Neocon-Fascists we just voted out of office.

So I do not want to see more of the same in the Oval Office on January 21.

Look, if Obama wants to put anyone he wants in office, that's fine by me, as long as they adhere to doing what is right by the people, and not by the corporatocracy and war for profit machine.

Not a good omen.

You realize our current Chief of Staff is ex-Goldman Sachs right?

After a president who surround himself with oil execs and almost every former director of Goldman Sachs, Rahm and Biden are already an incredible improvement. Obama could put a squirrel and a beaver in charge of the DOE and EPA and he would look like a genius compared to Bush who put people in charge based on their willingness to avoid listening to anyone in their organizations.

OBAMA MUST IMMEDIATELY TACKLE SYSTEMIC PREJUDICE AND CIVIL LIBERTIES VIOLATIONS

Ensuring the civil liberties of all Americans, and weeding out prejudice within the federal government, must be a top priority of the new administration -- as the comments on accompanying threads here so graphically demonstrate.

The free ride for the forces of hate and extremism, hiding behind programs to "keep America safe," must come to an abrupt end.

Perhaps one of the first executive orders of the new administration should be mandated sensitivity training for all federal personnel, and a refresher course on the meaning of the U.S. Constitution.

All federal departments should be screened for policies and ongoing operations that are violating the civil liberties of American citizens.

Again, the sentiments expressed in this thread demonstrate the urgency of this mission.

And wrongdoers should be brought to account before the bar of the law.

BUT WILL THE ELECTION EVEN MATTER? Not when government-supported extrajudicial "vigilante injustice" squads are "gang stalking" American citizens, making a mockery of the rule of law:

Chief of Staff is a very important position and will be instrumental in building the next Administration.

Rahm Emmanuel has assets and liabilities. These liabilities likely undermine everything Obama's Campaign stands for. If selected for the Chief of Staff position, then I hope Representative Emmanuel will put all liabilities behind for the benefit of all Americans and not just the chosen few since we are all in this together.

The World is watching.

I just love it! Rahm Emanuel, aka Rahmbo, along with other popular names I've been reading from the Clinton Administration sound great! This should go to show all Americans that Barack is getting down to business, and that we can be totally confident in the future.

As for all the sour grape republican losers commenting on this post, bad-mouthing their country, in a way, this election belongs to you. It was this nasty talk, shameless disgrace, that brought out 82% of the electorate to rid the American people from having to hear your venomous words.

Now, we have ourselves a REAL President!

You are aware that when someone is appointed (not confirmed) that their parents don’t actually work with them, right?

I’m not sure if your dad sits next to you all day at work and tells you how to do your job, but the rest of us tend to have enough initiative to form our own views and opinions without being dependent on our parents.

Is Rahm the best selection? Not in my opinion but I’m sure he will do a great job and it definitely would not be an F-up for Obama. Every person is going to have his/her own flaws but if the only problems you have with a guy is his father’s actions, that’s a huge reach.

Rahm Emanuel Mulling Obama Job Offer

From reading these blog comments, I can see that so many are still afraid of change, yet the past have left our country in a total disaster to a large extent. It is mentalities of such that stunts one's own progress. Be better than that of one whom chooses to cut their nose off despite their face. Think about the future for your children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. They deserve far more then the disasterous demeanor of the past, wouldn't you think so. Life is more than just you and me, our love ones will be here to deal with what we do today. Not everthing will be happy doray, but at least strive for the best always and secure a change mechanism that would be more beneficial then harm. As far as Emanuel is concerned in my book, I would suspect that under an Obama's administration, that he would conduct himself accordingly, as should we all in any given situation when we know what we stand for. God Bless America!

If Rahm Emanuel is C.O.S., it shows the neocons still hold power. Rahm Emanuel is very pro Israel and he along with the so called 'neolibs' will make sure of a belligerent attitude towards Arab countries and Iran. The more things change, they stay the same.

I certainly hope that Obama won't be putting Clinton people in high places. Leftwing neocons are no better than their rightwing counterparts.

In fact, I was hoping Obama suggest that with 65 Dem Senators, Obama would ask his party to cut Lieberman, "the independent neocon," loose. No chairmanships for some willing to undermine the party and who left open the possibility of actually running with the oppositon on the top ticket.
