Dem-Aligned Fund For America To Close Its Doors

The Fund For America, a Democratic-aligned group organized to disburse contributions from wealthy individuals to progressive organizations, will close its doors Thursday.

The announcement is expected to be made tomorrow; the decision will be attributed to the difficult environment for soliciting major contributions. That environment was largely created by Barack Obama, who publicly declared he was did not want his donors funding outside organizations; instead, the presumptive Democratic nominee said he wants donors spending all of their time collecting cash for his campaign.

The Fund is the latest independent organization aligned with Democrats to fold. In the days following Obama's announcement regarding outside giving, Progressive Media USA, which was designed to run television ads across the country in the presidential contest, dropped that part of its mission.

In its brief existence, the Fund for America collected and disbursed roughly $20 million -- far below what many had expected when the group was originally formed in 2007 by some of the biggest heavyweights in Democratic politics, including former White House chief of staff John Podesta and Change to Win Chair Anna Burger.

As initially conceived, the Fund would be a long-term way in which affluent donors could give money and have those dollars directed in a smart and strategic way to various organizations around the country. Major players in the donor world provided some of the initial seed money -- including $2.5 million from Hollywood producer Steve Bing and $1 million from philanthropist George Soros.

But the willingness to fund such an operation proved less deep than originally expected, and Obama's pledge to keep his donors out of the independent spending world only worsened the problem.

Former Rep. Martin Frost (Texas), the president of America Votes, a group focused heavily on voter identification and turnout for the general election that has received several million dollars from the Fund, offered this when reached for comment: "We thank the Fund for its help and will continue our own aggressive fundraising to build a strong independent progressive infrastructure in 2008 and beyond."

A pox upon the extreme Left and the extreme Right. I spent 30 years swearing to defend the Constitution and by the way not to follow orders that violated said Constitution. Many of you need to give a little in order to get a little. It is possible that people that I don't agree with can have a good idea, but, if I never listen to them I will never know it.

Keep trying, Chris, I love your spirit.

And a gratuitious swipe yet at the guy who should have been Speaker, Martin Frost, instead of the useless Pelosi (well, useful for Republican purposes because she is a Republican).

Obama is the stone-cold nuts in this. McCain can just live out the rest of his life getting twisted on vodka and losing millions shooting dice at Caesar's. How anyone in America looks up to this cretin is beyond me.

Me cae super mal, el evangelico exremo este con todas sus disfiguraciones y libras de maquillage en la cara!

Sorry, buddy, no more USA-USA-USA war cheerleading and special graphics and themes. Yes, an African-American, Chicago ward man trained on the Slavic side of town, wholly Democratic and an inspiration to millions is going to win this, extinguish the War Hero (tm) and maybe, just maybe, take war and sabre-rattling off the table as political semtex.

Got Bill Clinton wrong in 1998? Got John McCain wrong forever? Crying you a river, buddy. Learn to blog.

I think Michelle Obama is beautiful both inside and out.

In any case, I'll be voting for my president based on the issues, not on how his wife looks. This is not a beauty contest. I hope people like you will take war, death, and the economy a little more seriously and grow up.

MEMO TO OBAMA: THE DEM CONGRESSIONAL LEADERSHIP IS SELLING OUT THE CONSTITUTION:
WILL YOU?

The pathetic capitulation of the spineless Dem leadership on constitutional issues -- from warantless surveillance to the refusal to conduct hearings on other possible constitutional rights abuses -- begs the question: Et tu, Barack Obama?

The headlines rightly focus on telco immunity from lawsuits challenging government surveillance programs. But there are other constitutional rights issues that endanger our democracy, such as:

* The impact of electronic voting machines and the lack of a paper trail on the integrity of elections; and

* Possible Administration aid and support for KKK-style vigilante groups known as "GANG STALKERS" or "COMMUNITY STALKERS."

Read the following link and sublinks:

http://www.usenet-replayer.com/faq/alt.abuse.recovery.html

While the media focus on the horse race, democracy is being threatened by suspect election apparatus and grassroots quasi-military vigilante squads.

Where is the national media on stories about our threatened democracy?

Yes, Chris, this has much to do with politics. Because the politics of fear and vigilantism is destroying our democratic freedoms at the grassroots, while the pundits play the "Who Won the Week" game.

Where are today's Woodwards and Bernsteins?

I THINK THE MEDIA IS BEING BIAS TOWARDS OBAMA. I DON'T SEE HOW OBAMA OPTING OUT OF PUBLIC FINANCING GETS MORE TRACTION THAN MCCAIN FLIP FLOPPING ON OFF SHORE DRILLING WHICH FOR SURE IS VERY IMPORTANT TO MILLIONS OF VOTERS WHETHER GOOD OR BAD. HOW DO YOU THINK THE AMERICAN PEOPLE ARE GOING TO FEEL IF THE MEDIA EVER TELL THEM HOW MCCAIN ENCOURAGES A DRAFT ONCE THE BUSH ADMINISTRATION GIVES THE WINK AND NODE FOR ISRAEL TO BOMB IRAN AND START THE ALL OUT 3RD WORLD WAR. NO BUT OBAMA OPT OUR OF PUBLIC FINANCING. SO WHAT, I'M GLAD HE DID, AND I HOPE HE RAISE 100 MILLION DOLLARS TO DEFEAT THE MEDIA AND THEIR BIASES TOWARDS HIM AND THE RADICAL RIGHT WING REPUBLICANS WHO ALL WANT TO HIDE THE REAL ISSUES BEHIND MCCAIN AND HIS 133 LOBBYIST AFTER HE SAID HE WILL HAVE A NO LOBBYIST CAMPAIGN. I BET ONCE THE AMERICAN PEOPLE LEARN THE REAL INTEREST OF THE MCCAIN CAMPAIGN HIS DRAFTING THEIR KIDS TO WAR FOR THE BUSH ADMINISTRATIONS LIE, HIS SUPPORT WILL DRY UP FASTER THAN WATER IN THE DESERT. KEEP THE RADICAL RIGHT OUT OF THE WHITE HOUSE. IF YOUR SMART YOU'LL VOTE OBAMA. LOOK BELOW AND REALIZE MCCAIN WILL SAY AND DO ANYTHING TO CONTINUE IF NOT WORST ON THE FAILED POLICIES THAN BUSH.

I'M GLAD THE DEMS ARE HAVING A CLOSE DOOR EVENT. MCCAIN HAS MANY CLOSED DOOR EVENTS AND THE MEDIA SAY'S NOTHING. I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW WHY CHARLIE BLACKS COMMENTS WASN'T PICKED APART IN A NEGATIVE WAY UNDER A MICROSCOPE LIKE OBAMA'S OR ANYONE FROM HIS CAMPAIGN. LETS PUT CHARLIE BLACK'S COMMENTS INTO PERSPECTIVE. " A TERROIST ATTACK WILL HELP MCCAIN". WHAT IT REALLY MEANS A TERROIST ATTACK IN THE U.S. WILL KILL OR INJURE HUNDREDTHS OF AMERICANS IF NOT THOUSANDS AN EDGE. SO IT TAKES AMERICANS DYING TO GIVE MCCAIN AN EDGE OF WINNING THE ELECTION AND THE MEDIA JUSTIFIED THIS DISGUSTING COMMENT AS BEING TRUE. ITS TRUE THAT A TERROIST ATTACK KILLING AMERICANS WILL GIVE MCCAIN AN EDGE AT WINNING AN ELECTION. WHAT WILL IT GIVE THOSE AMERICANS THAT DIE BECAUSE OF THE TERROIST ATTACK THAT HELPED ELECT A PRESIDENT THAT WAS WELCOMING IT. WHAT DOES THAT SAY ABOUT THE MCCAIN CAMPAIGN? IF IT WAS OBAMA'S CHIEF STRATEGIST THAT SAID SUCH A COMMENT THE MEDIA WOULD BE ALL OVER IT AND PICKING IT APART SUN UP AND SUN DOWN. WHAT ABOUT MCCAIN'S COMMENTS ON A POSSIBLE DRAFT IF WE ARE IN AN ALL OUT 3RD WORLD WAR WHICH MAY BE ON THE WAY. ISRAEL IS THREATENING TO BOMB IRAN AND WE WILL BE ENGAGED IN AN ALL OUT 3RD WAR. THE MEDIA DOESN'T TALK ABOUT THESE COMMENTS AND I WONDER WHY. WHY ISN'T THE ISSUES AND COMMENTS THAT MEANS THE MOST TO THE AMERICAN PEOPLE WHICH DEFINATELY INVOLVES THE AMERICAN PEOPLE ARE NEVER DISCUSSED BUT WERE ARE GIVING STORIES ABOUT THE DEMS CLOSED FUNDRAISING OR OBAMA OPTING OUT OF PUBLIC FINANCING. WHAT CHARLE BLACK SAID IS VERY IMPORTANT BECAUSE IN CASE YOU DIDN'T KNOW MILLIONS OF AMERICANS DON'T TRUST THE REPUBLICAN PARTY AND I'M ONE OF THEM. WHAT MCCAIN SAID ABOUT A DRAFT IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT BUT NO JOURNALIST WANTS TO SPEAK OF ANYTHING IMPORTANT JUST LITTLE THINGS THAT YOU MAKE IMPORTANT WHETHER THE AMERICAN PEOPLE THINK IT IS OR NOT. GET REAL AND START SCRUTINIZING MCCAIN AND HIS 133 LOBBIYIST RUNNING HIS CAMPAIGN.

Peggy,

What are you talking about? Money is fleeing the Republican Party in droves and finding its way into Democratic coffers. Big business wants a winner not a loser. Last I saw the D raised more money and had more money on hand than the R. Mark Shields (no Republican) has said that Obama's reasoning, unregulated Republican 527's, made no sense since Democratic 527 raised more money. Shields also points out many of McCain's flip-flops but admitted that Obama's was epic proportions. I wish you would write Mark Shield and let him know that the Republicans have a enormous money advantage over the Democrats (it will be news to him).

So NOW the position of David the Liar Plouffe is this:

If Obama signs his name to something, then the commitment is good.

If Obama never signed his name, THEN ANYTHING OBAMA SAYS CAN NOT BE TRUSTED.

This certainly was REASONING OF THE STATEMENT TODAY BY David the Liar Plouffe today out of Obama headquarters.

David the Liar Plouffe basically had a news conference to say that Obama can not be trusted ON ANYTHING OBAMA SAYS, UNLESS OBAMA SIGNS HIS NAME TO A PIECE OF PAPER.
THAT IS THE REASONING CLEAR AND SIMPLE.

******************************************

David Plouffe brought a prop to his briefing with reporter: a copy of John McCain's signature on a state election document in which he attested that he'd be taking public financing.

"John McCain is spending tens of millions of dollars, we believe, unlawfully,' he said, waving the document.

The details of the argument over whether McCain used an acceptable or unacceptable loophole to secure a loan with the possibility of public financing is now before a court in a DNC lawsuit and subject to the FEC's consideration.

"John McCain signed his name, 'John McCain," Plouffe said. "He got on the ballot attesting he would be in the primary system."

***************************************

Plouffe failed to mention TODAY the Obama made MULTIPLE VERBAL COMMITMENTS TO ADHERE TO THE CAMPAIGN FINANCE SYSTEM, COMMITMENTS TO THE AMERICAN PEOPLE WHICH OBAMA SAID LAST WEEK HE WOULD BREAK.

What is wrong with David Plouffe?

Does the Obama campaign ever think about what they are saying? Seems like they have led themselves into some pretty stupid things this year.

.

Let me get this straight:

David the Liar Plouffe is attempting to hold MCCAIN to his Campaign Finance Pledge within a week of Obama saying that he will not abide by his multiple commitments to take part in the public finance system.

Is that David the Liar Plouffe's position?

Obama's commitments and pledges MEAN NOTHING and THE DEMOCRATS WANT TO SUE McCain to hold him to his word ???

Is anyone following this??

What a bunch of DECEPTIVE LIARS.

***************************************

Plouffe: McCain spending 'unlawfully'

Do you know who Nadhmi Auchi is?
He's the Iraqi billionaire who was Saddam Hussein's money launderer in London. He lent 3.5 million dollars to Tony Rezko, who used some of it to buy the land next to Obama's house and then sell him back a strip of it. So, what's to prevent Mr. Auchi, and other foreigners with an interest in our election, from buying influence in a similar way?...Public financing of the election will, as the candidate opting into it can only spend the 83 million granted him...so what's to prevent Kadhmi Auchi from lending another "Rezko" another million or so?..... Please stop telling me Obama represents a Change from sleazy backroom politics! You're only allowing him to highlight YOUR naivite, as he betrays your trust.

Posted by: Scott | June 25, 2008 11:33 PM | Report abuse

One can say all one wants about Obama changing his stance on public campaign finance, but in order to fight these venomous lies being spread about him and the attacks from the Republicans, he needs lots of money, more than the 85 mil. from public finance. The RNC has much more money to spend than the DNC, so it was not a level playing field to begin with. For all of us, the matter is, do we want Obama and the Democrats to win in November, or do we want to continue the devastating conditions in our country brought on by Republican control?

Posted by: Peggy Ledbetter | June 25, 2008 11:32 PM | Report abuse

Bill,

I think Obama is a smart politician (I use that in the negative). If Obama gets control of the cash, then he will also controls who will receive this money and thus create a loyalty by his generosity. Look how he spent on the Super delegates. He knows how to buy favors. A new President needs a lot of capital with the congress (even if it's his own party)...nothing like buying your way to create it. Folding the other Pac's will give him more power. It will come back to bit him I'm just not sure how or when. Look at the R who created this K Street association and how that destroyed their ethics and what little soul they had left. I see Obama going down the same path only not as fast. I used to like Obama but the more I read the less I am impressed (not that anybody has to impress me). I still think Obama will win the general election (his to lose), I just don't have HOPE things will change.

Posted by: sltiowa | June 25, 2008 11:18 PM | Report abuse

Change it is. Sounds like candidates might be in charge of their own messages and campaigns again, legally. Then they're responsible for what's said, and can actually control it. I like it.

Posted by: Fairfax Voter | June 25, 2008 11:09 PM | Report abuse

TJK,

Let see...Obama was for campaign finance reform early in the year (even went as far as to say the system was not broken) before he became the nominee, but after he became the nominee he says the systems broken. What happen in the interim? Obama did the math and saw he would have a big advantage...He sold his ethics out. I would also add that McCain has sold much of his ethics as well. What I am tired of hearing is that Obama is a new candidate. He is just like all other candidates and he is just as partisan as any other candidate (McCain included). I see nothing different between the two candidates except that each favors traditional Democratic and Republican causes (nothing new here). For Independents, we really don't have much of a choice.

Posted by: sltiowa | June 25, 2008 10:52 PM | Report abuse

Yeah, I wondered about that when I heard Obama would forgo the federal funding. Hasn't he basically given up $85M for the sake of directly controlling the other $400M instead of having it spent on his behalf? Is the disadvantage to McCain real or has Obama made another rookie mistake?

If this isn't campaign reform, I don't know what is. Obama is effectively stopping surrogate groups from doing things on his behalf that he has no control over. Will we see McCain taking comparable responsibility? Doubtful because he can't afford to turn any support down, even if they launch unethical or illegal ads. We have never seen a presidential nominee demonstrate such dramatic leadership in calling the shots. How can anyone say he's the typical politician, doing the same old stuff?

Posted by: TJK | June 25, 2008 9:32 PM | Report abuse

"That environment was largely created by Barack Obama, who publicly declared he was did not want his donors funding outside organizations; instead, the presumptive Democratic nominee said he wants donors spending all of their time collecting cash for his campaign."

So BHO refuses public funding for the GE AND then sucks up all the available D cash? How does this work "down-ticket"?
How does this work for the DNC?

Posted by: MarkInAustin | June 25, 2008 8:56 PM | Report abuse

This just shows the pull that the Obama camp has on the left-wing PAC's. And how many Dems donate to Obama. The PAC's can't get cash with the Obama crowd following orders from above.
