Gas Tax Fight Grows Hotter

Less than 24 hours before Indiana and North Carolina voters head to the polls to pick between Sens. Hillary Rodham Clinton (N.Y.) and Barack Obama (Ill.), the two campaigns are upping the ante on the issue of the gas tax.

The lines were drawn last week when Clinton proposed the suspension of the federal gas tax for the summer months to provide some level of relief to people struggling with the ever-increasing price of a gallon of gas. Clinton proposed to make up for the budget shortfall caused by the suspension by increasing taxes on oil and gas companies.

Obama quickly came out in opposition to the plan, dismissing it as political pandering that would have no real impact on voters. Obama, instead, has focused on the need for comprehensive energy reform and a long term solution to the problem.

While the back and forth over the issue was somewhat contentious over the weekend, new ads by each candidate reveal how much is at stake in tomorrow's primaries.

Let's look at both ads.

First, Clinton.

Then, Obama.

In other words, it is ON!

The two candidates' strategy on the 18.4 cents per gallon gas tax issue provides an interesting window into how they see their own campaigns as well as how they see the race and where they believe it is headed.

The Clinton campaign has long struggled to knock Obama off the pedestal of post-partisan candidate. Obama has successfully transformed his campaign into a movement, making a vote for him something bigger than simply casting a ballot for another politician.

Over the past two months or so some of that shine has worn off Obama as he has been beset by the ongoing controversy over Rev. Jeremiah Wright and his own comments about small town voters being "bitter" about their life circumstances.

The latest Clinton ad seeks to tie into that emerging narrative, asking "What happened to Barack Obama?" The more Clinton and her campaign can cast Obama as just another politician, the better the chance she has of making the case that she is the better choice for a general election.

The Clinton ad also seeks to paint her as someone in touch with the concerns of the middle class and willing to fight for those folks while casting Obama as less able to understand their needs and hopes.

"Hillary wants the oil companies to pay for the gas tax this summer -- so you don't have to," says the narrator in Clinton's ad. "Barack Obama wants you to keep paying; $8 billion in all. Hillary is the one who gets it."

On a conference call this morning, Clinton communications director Howard Wolfson echoed that sentiment, insisting that the debate over a gas tax holiday spoke to a "larger difference" between the two candidates. "Senator Clinton has been the candidate in the race who understands the pains middle class voters are going through," Wolfson added.

Obama, on the other hand, doesn't directly address the gas tax in his ad -- perhaps a sign that he knows he is fighting on tenuous ground? -- choosing instead to focus on how Clinton's campaign tactics are part of the problem, not part of the solution.

The ad begins by framing the challenges before the American public -- the war in Iraq, high gas prices, economic slowdown. "And what does Hillary Clinton offer us?" asks the ad's narrator. "Her hometown newspaper says she's taking the low road -- her attacks do nothing but harm. The same old Washington politics won't fix our problems."

At the heart of the ad -- and Obama's campaign -- is that the choice between the two candidates isn't really over issues. Rather it's about turning the page on the way politics has been conducted since the 1980s, electing new faces and trying new approaches.

"We need honest answers... And a president we can trust," the narrator says at the close of Obama's latest ad -- driving home that message as well as subtly (or not so subtly) suggesting that voters can't (or don't) trust Clinton.

As the campaign has developed, Clinton has seen the number of people who believe her to be honest and trustworthy plummet. Obama's ad is aimed at reinforcing that notion in voters' mind, asking them to ask themselves whether they can believe anything that Clinton says at this point. If Obama can convince voters that Clinton is a flawed messenger, her attacks on him -- no matter how pointed or on point -- will be ineffective.

The candidates' strategies in the closing days of the Hoosier-Heel primaries (good? bad? better ideas?) mirror their closing arguments as the nomination fight draws to a close.

Clinton is making a heart appeal. She understands the struggles of middle class voters and is using policy proposals to solve those problems. She is using her stances on issues to stimulate the doubts that some lower middle class, rural, white voters have shown toward Obama -- an acknowledgment that her only realistic path to the nomination is if superdelegates decide nominating the Illinois Senator is too much of a risk in the fall.

Obama is making a head appeal. He understands that middle class voters are struggling with high gas prices but is investing a lot of faith in the idea that these same voters will see Clinton's proposal as ineffective and political pandering at its worst.

High-minded versus whole-hearted. A fascinating choice awaits voters in Indiana and North Carolina.

Dave,

Thanks, The links have great information. What I find interesting in this blog is the disparity among the users. Clearly the information people absorb and regurgitate is mixed with some facts and a lot of personal emotions. As a country until we are willing to pull together as a collective whole, we will not fare well in the immdeiate future. The WWII generation showed us the power of a unified America. It is my opinion we have become selfish, self centered and have the what can the govt do for me attitude. Albeit, I am in the military and have a slanted view. owever, I read and try to understand the issues from a detached perspective. Observing, researching, collecting, and understanding information is a daunting task these days. Never the less, to do nothing and rely on the media and corporate america is even more criminal. Thank you all for your tireless comments. I enjoy reading this blog when I can.

Randy Shaw of San Francisco ~ A Colleague and Friend of Drevelyn "D" Minor ~~~ Wrote in the ~~~Beyond Chron.org ~~~for more information please visit their web-site. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Clinton Moves Right~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

The day of reckoning has finally arrived. For all of the talk about Kentucky and West Virginia, and then taking this fight to the convention, Hillary Clinton either wins both North Carolina and Indiana or her hope of winning the nomination is done.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Recognizing the stakes, Clinton has described North Carolina as a "game changer." And she has responded to this challenge the same way that the Clintons have always done: by moving to the right and co-opting Republican policies/campaign messages.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Consider the following:~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

The summer gas tax waiver: That proposal was initiated by John McCain, and is opposed by all leading Democrats. Clinton used the standard Republican tactic of talking like a populist while governing like an aristocrat in pushing a gas tax waiver that would eliminate tens of thousands of blue-collar jobs, while not costing the oil companies a dime.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Remember earlier this year when Clinton repeatedly attacked Obama's accurate claim that Ronald Reagan had shifted the nation in a way that Bill Clinton had not? Well, in Clinton's raging against the federal gas tax---the one used to build highways and mass transit---she appears to be channeling Reagan and other Republicans in trying to wear the anti-tax mantle in this race.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Clinton's claim that her opponents are "elitist": A classic example from the Republican playbook, which has multimillionaire candidates like the Bushes claim that Democrats and progressives are serving the elite. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Economists are "elitists" whose views should be ignored: Clinton argued over the weekend that she did not care that every economist thought her gas tax waiver was a bad idea, because she said they were "elitists." George W. Bush has shown the disastrous impacts of ignoring expert advice, and Clinton is now embracing the same course. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I agree with Randy and I'm voting for Obama!

As usual, Nor'Easter demonstrates his profound ignorance. Worse, he seems to take delight in it and wont bother to read even the most obvious resources to correct that ignorance. In his writings and writings about him, Augustine's heritage and race are explicitly stated: (from the Wikipedia article on Augustine (...Saint Augustine was, by descent, a Berber[6], a major ethnic group native to North Africa comprising the Numidians and Mauri...". These are black, negroid ancestory African's. Likewise, other early christian church figures are discussed in "NORTH AFRICAN CHURCH FATHERS: THE CLASH BETWEEN CHRIST AND CULTURE AND THE FREEDOM OF MAN", http://www.africamissions.org/africa/nafchfat.html.

Did you find this Cone excerpt on the web? What names are associated with this theology?

In Mr. Brooks' posting on Black Liberation Theology there were a couple of obvious innaccuracies about Saints Augustin and Aquinas, so you have to wonder what else in that posting was also incorrect.

He takes a lot of liberties with facts in his postings, so much so that everything has to be taken with a grain of salt until fact checked.

MarkInAustin - Mibrooks makes Black Liberation Theology sound so nice I almost want to join. But that would be problematic. The following is James Cone's definition. Cone is one of the founders of the theology. It does not sound very inviting, at least to me.

"Black theology refuses to accept a God who is not identified totally with the goals of the black community. If God is not for us and against white people, then he is a murderer, and we had better kill him. The task of black theology is to kill Gods who do not belong to the black community ... Black theology will accept only the love of God which participates in the destruction of the white enemy. What we need is the divine love as expressed in Black Power, which is the power of black people to destroy their oppressors here and now by any means at their disposal. Unless God is participating in this holy activity, we must reject his love."

Gas Tax Holiday: Multiple Choice

Hillary Clinton's claim that a Gas Tax Holiday will help middle class Americans, at the same time that her advisers have privately stated the opposite to the Washington Post, namely that they are aware that this will result in an increase in gas prices, and that it is "just politics", is most similar in political mindset and ideology to:

a) Former Bush Administration Chief of Staff Andy Card stating that the Administration waited until September to make its case for Iraq because `From a marketing point of view, you don't introduce new products in August';

b) Paul Wolfowitz predicting that the costs of reconstruction in Iraq would be paid for by oil profits from that nation, when contemporaneous predictions of the costs of the war and a subsequent insurgency would be, and have been, far greater;

c) Dick Cheney's prediction we would be greeted in Iraq as "liberators, despite numerous pre-war intelligence analyses which warned "that the U.S. would face armed resistance from Iraqis following the fall of Saddam Hussein's regime."

d) All of the above

Clinton Calls for "Bad Weather Holiday"

"When asked this morning by ABC News' George Stephanopoulos if she could name a single economist who backs her call for a gas tax holiday this summer, HRC said "I'm not going to put my lot in with economists."

The gas tax holiday is...so economically stupid (it would increase demand for gas and cause prices to rise, eliminating any benefit to consumers while costing the Treasury more than $9 billion, and generate more pollution) and silly (even if she won, HRC won't be president this summer) as to be worrisome. That HRC now says she doesn't care that what economists think is even more troubling."

-Robert Reich, May 4, 2008

I know we've got those "intellectual", high-falutin', elitist meteorologists, those "forecasters" with their complicated charts and their mumbo-jumbo, their high fronts and their low fronts, their Doppler radars. But I've come to say that we're going to put an end to all of that.

When my daddy and I went out in the morning in (Scranton, Indianapolis, Durham, Hagåtña, Charlotte Amalie, San Juan), and he said "It's going to be a sunny day today", well, that was good enough for me.

And that's why, if you vote for me on (May 6, May 13, June 3), I will put into effect a "Bad Weather Holiday" running from the years 2009-2012--and potentially extendable.

That's right. We shouldn't have to eat our (hot dogs, barbecue, tamales, Chicken Estufao, Stewed oxtail) under rainy skies. We've had enough of going off to work in the (streets, sands, seas) of this most beautiful (state, territory) only to face a cold, cloudy day. We know what it's like to rest our weary bones after a hard day of labor in the nearest (local watering hole, locale taberna, berlina) only to step out into a stiff, tiring wind.

The Weather issue is very real to me, as I've been meeting people across this nation who (walk, drive, sail, ride ox before stewing tail) to work, and would save precious sums if they did not have to spend their hard earned money on "umbrellas" and "rain coats" and other high priced, high class items of the upper crust. In my daddy's day, a newspaper held over the head by a worn, calloused hand was just fine.

So I say: Let the 'Umbrella Lobby' take the brunt--not our hard working citizens. Oh, sure. I know elite opinion and so called "academic experts" say that my plan would cause 12 straight years of hail, swarms of ravenous locusts, and a vortex of hurricanes ranging from the Mideast to the West Coast.

But I don't put stock in experts. And neither should you. And that's why you should vote for me on (May 6, May 13, June 3).

NOTE: North Carolina version: Drop all final "'g"s.

How does the gas tax fight grow hotter if Obama's ad doesn't mention the gas tax. Perhaps, his polling indicates his argument is losing or arguing to keep the tax isn't as he thinks. He took out the gas tax part and puts out a rather tepid response.

You are correct, the democratic race has gotten a bit out of hand.

However, if you want to see someone governing, why don't you put a call into Nancy Pelosi's office???

She has done relatively nothing since she took over.

She can't even pass a budget. We have had continuing resolutions - is that even constitutional??

If you have ever studied government, you will find that the power of the President is limited.

Check out what your democratic Congress is doing beyond diddling about when they will schedule the next worthless Iraq vote.

The democrats have been in control of Congress for almost a year and half now - what have they accomplished?

Patrick Call Nancy Pelosi's office. Ask them.

Somebody needs to focus. We have a war going on, health care financing spiralling out of control, the price of food and energy going ballistic and we can now finally choose a new president.

So what have all the media outlets got us all stirred up so pationately over?

Who was Obama's pastor and can we really afford to give the average driver $28 this summer.

Is that all there is? Am I missing something? It would seem just as appropriate to just have a swimsuit contest followed by the evening gown contest. And then we vote.

nothing like that.

The question still is: what does Obama believe ???

Obama brought his children to this church teaching Black Liberation Theology and "Black Values" for years and years.

The term black values came from the church's own website.

This country deserves some answers from a person who is standing for office.

Seriously.

Also, while most of your posting appeared to be reasonable I would like to call your attention to this phrase from your posting which is completely inappropriate in a forum like this:

The change is metrics is a change, which is what Obama keeps calling for.

So when Obama wins, they change the metric which is what he gets for winning.

AND what is going on? Obama is really going far with Idaho - a completely red state that will not mean much for the democrats in November.

Projected performance in November is important. Just because Obama can get a bunch of college kids in a gym, it does not mean much.

"Words Of Wisdom" - Black Liberation Theology is nothing more than the manifestation of former black radicals that became Christian's and understood that Christ and his message offered them exactly what they had been seeking all along. In that, they weren't all that much different than the Jesus Freaks who founded Calvary Chapel or the Franciscan's inspired by St. Francis of Assisi. Moreover, those former black radical were taking back their birth right. St. Augustine was black, so was Thomas Aquinas, as were several of the earliest church fathers. A lot of the most fundamental underpinnings of the Christian church are African, Greek, Jewish, eclectic in a way that some white American Fundamentalist twit can NEVER hope to understand coming from the lily white European church tradition.Black Liberation Theology is not that much different than the new Native American church of my people. It embodies the righteous anger, the prophetic traditions of the Old Testament, the desire to meet the challenge Christ set before us to spread the Word that all of us are God's children, all of us deserve to be treated decently and, in turn, must treat others the same. But, and this is Biblical, if the unbelievers or claimed believers do not heed the Word, do not undertake the challenge, then we must show them, and this is Christ saying this mind you, the dust from the bottom of our shoes. The Gospel is meant for those who will listen and undertake the challenge. It is not all sweetness and light, it is not joy and happiness and empty headed waving your hands in the air on Sunday mornings, it is hard work, a desire to CHANGE yourself and the world, to meet the challenge set before us by Christ. The rebirth is not 'eggersis', awaking from the once dead, it is 'antistasis', rebuilding anew from the rubble of the old, corrupted, and worn out.

I just can't wait to see how the world reacts if Hillary Clinton manages to obtain the nomination for the democratic party by means of pandering, inserting guilt by association, elitism, former pastors and flag pins! The world is already laughing at this seemingly endless take no prisoners campaign likened by Bill Clinton to a football game - despite the fact even football games have rules. But hey, America already gave the world Ronald Reagan, two Bushes and a 'I never had sex with that woman' presidency - so when in doubt!

The only thing a Hillary presidency will demonstrate to the world is how racist America is and how Americans are so easily distracted from real issues. Or that they are distracted from real issues exactly because race has in of itself become an issue. Either way it is not a pretty picture. But of course it's not about the world - it's about America. And the world will just have to accept how America does business. Oh oh, here we go again!

Chinese Army Inc. . Just as there is no quick fix for the energy crunch there is also no easy solution to the trade crash. During the 1990s, Clinton also sponsored a so-called trade boom with China that actually busted America. Hundreds of billions of dollars flowed out of America in the largest single trade deficit in history.

A real solution would be to reduce the need for trucking. Buy from your neighborhood. Don't buy from California or China unless you have no choice in your area.

The mentality of buying the best and the cheapest from around the world taught in business school is hurting our environment. Production of poor quality is adding more junks in our landfills. We must treat our environment as if it is a real budget and spend it carefully.

BTW, I am not even an environmentalist. I agree with Senator Obama that this gas tax holiday is just a political ploy to pander for votes before a major primary. Hillary just wants some temporary advantage for IN and NC primaries, while McCain means it.

Leadership requires suffering." and then Young makes that stupid remark about Clinton "probably gone out with more black women than Barack."

So much for maturity on either Young's part or Bill Clinton's, with his serial philandering.
Andrew Young is another example of how people can lose their ideals once the get a taste of power. Wonder what the Clintons have promised him? Oh, by the way, Andrew Young is a member of the same denomation - UCC - as Obama, AND a recipient of the Trumpet award - you know, the one Farrakhan received that has all the Clintonites in an uproar. Let's ask Andy about that, eh?

Obama said to Tim Russert on Meet The Press that he never heard the things Rev. Wright said until it was brought up by the media. He said he was not in the church when Rev. Wright said the provocative things that came out. Yet, in his book and audio tape, he quotes Rev. Wright EXACTLY - WORD FOR WORD regarding the US Bombing Hiroshima, etc. Here is the video link below.

Why does Mr. Obama INSIST on lying to us over and over and over. He calls his excuses and stories "reframing" his message.

I'll say. He's got so many frames around him we may as well call him a museum.

No meeting with Canada - adamantly denied this until the MEETING MEMO showed that he was lying. Then he continuted to deny, then pointed, deflected and said Hillary did it!

This man is outrageous.

And another thing, can he please look at people when he's talking to him. It's a classic trait of a liar that they look down and not into a persons eyes when they are lying.

He should really stop either lying, or looking down. He does it CONSTANTLY.

He also used to have his hands in his pockets all the time. Mr. Smooth? Or Mr. Hiding something.

At this point, I think we all know the answer to that one.

Here is the video where he QUOTES the Rev. Wrights words from the sermon he says he never heard.

Mr. Obama would probably like to re-write his book now and take it out.

[Tip of the hat to those who have already made some of these point, and a recap]

Our current phantom energy plan, "soak and choke," has been brought to you, for the most part, by politicians, industry, and economists (the energy-aristocracy). To be sure, we consumers, at the bottom of the energy chain, have contributed to our situation. The primary difference between us and the energy-aristocracy, is that our buck passing is not a metaphor -- BUT at the pump.

Almost two years ago, shortly after taking impeachment off the table, Nancy Pelosi also promised and has failed to deliver a comprehensive energy plan.

Oil companies have stolen billions of dollars by taking exorbitant windfall profits, by avoiding taxes, by acquiring reductions in or ignoring penalties for foul ups, ..., by holding back fees and royalties.

Hillary Clinton has proposed all of energy, tax, ..., and health plans/policies. Barack Obama presented his weaker versions of the same, only after her plans were made public.
[ Coldcomfort: . . Amen, and remember how during the debates, the hard questions would go to Hillary first, giving the other candidates time to listen to her and then think of their reply. ]

I am sure everyone agrees that any comprehensive policy should eventually include every element in the chain -- explorations, ..., well heads, ..., refineries, ..., distribution, ..., industrial and individual consumers, ... engines, appliances, and manufactured goods, ..., AND ALTERNATIVE SOURCES [ emphasis added ]. . . . . Further, time will be required to fully implement any plan(s). Usage habits must change. Equipment of all sorts, across the full spectrum of the chain, must be phased out and replaced.

Now, Hillary Clinton has proposed an additional short term plan directed at only a few elements of the chain. She intends to relieve the individual consumers and take the money from the suppliers who are reaping huge unearned profits and are already in arrears on old debts. I am not alone in believing that it has the potential for short term relief of the strangulation that is already affecting the bottom of the energy chain. Further, it is not difficult to see that the relief will extend beyond the individual energy consumers.

Critics (her opponents and the energy-aristocrats who have failed us) say this temporary plan rewards bad behavior and will wreak long term havoc. That might be true, if it were to become permanent, and we fail to deliver and implement long term, comprehensive policies and plans.

Who would be relieved? Individuals who must commute to work and school, who deliver goods and services, who must look for work or go for groceries, who planned for vacations, etc. The relief would extend (trickle down) to a great variety of the other 'small people' who support these activities, and even to the the price of food on the table.

As expected, Obama and the Obamaniacs jumped on this to deflect attention from his shortcomings, failings, and fear of debating.

Obama shows us once again he is full of hot air. Hillary has stepped up because she knows we need immediate relief and cannot wait until someone is elected. She will do this tax cut in the short term and this is a good sign she will do even more when she is President. Any Independent, Republican or Democrat voting for Obama needs to rethink their vote, the guy is full of trash talk and zero accomplishments just like the do nothing Congress. Hillary sees the pain and struggle of Americans facing daily the outrageous money grab the pro Bush and Obama oil companies are making at the pump, obviously Obama does not and thinks this problem can wait. Hillary is on our side, she is the real deal, she will fight and seriously make things happen, Obama will get rolled over like the big talker, do nothing he is. Do not vote for all talk no action Obama, vote for Hillary to save America.

Talk about "shell games," the candidates AND the press appear to have become collusive participants when it comes to the failure to offer and report on meaningful and effective short-term solutions to our energy problems! As usual, the press continues to fail to hold the candidates to task; the current (and paltry) choice of presidential contenders (especially co-sponsors Hillary Clinton and John McCain) should be strongly reminded by the news media that since they both are so eager to score political points with a short-term, federal tax abatement on gasoline, why have they so conveniently failed to propose an abatement on the current 54 cent-per-gallon import tariff on Brazilian ethanol?? Our current commitment of much of our farmland toward ethanol production derived from corn is, in fact, a no-win, economically unsound, and carbon-laden exercise in futility. This ill-conceived venture has done little to wean us from foreign oil, has not kept fuel prices down at the pump, and continues to take food from the mouths of Americans through skyrocketing prices at the grocery store. At the same time, it's a real no-brainer that America would be much better off buying fuel from Brazil than fighting in Iraq for oil! If only we had a good government and responsible press.....

HILLARY CLINTON CAN BEST WIN IN NOVEMBER:

It's time for everyone to face the truth. Barack Obama has no real chance of winning the national election in November at this time. His crushing defeat in Pennsylvania makes that fact crystal clear. His best, and only real chance of winning in November is on a ticket with Hillary Clinton as her VP.

Hillary Clinton seemed almost somber at her Pennsylvania victory speech. As if part of her was hoping Obama could have proved he had some chance of winning against the republican attack machine, and their unlimited money, and resources.

But it is absolutely essential that the democrats take back the Whitehouse in November. America, and the American people are in a very desperate condition now. And the whole World has been doing all that they can to help keep us propped up.

Hillary Clinton say's that the heat, and decisions in the Whitehouse are much tougher than the ones on the campaign trail. But I think Mr. Obama faces a test of whether he has what it takes to be a commander and chief by facing the difficult facts, and the truth before him. And by doing what is best for the American people by dropping out of the race, and offering his whole hearted assistance to Hillary Clinton to help her take back the Whitehouse for the American people, and the World.

Mr. Obama is a great speaker. And I am confident he can explain to the American people the need, and wisdom of such a personal sacrifice for them. It should be clear to everyone by now that Hillary Clinton is fighting her heart out for the American people. She has known for a long time that Mr. Obama can not win this November. You have to remember that the Clinton's have won the Whitehouse twice before. They know what it takes.

If Mr. Obama fails his test of commander and chief we can only hope that Hillary Clinton can continue her heroic fight for the American people. And that she prevails. She will need all the continual support and help we can give her. She may fight like a superhuman. But she is only human.

Sen. Hillary Clinton: "You know, more people have now voted for me than have voted for my opponent. In fact, I now have more votes than anybody has ever had in a primary contest for a nomination. And it's also clear that we've got nine more important contests to go."

Sincerely

Jacksmith... Working Class :-)

Clinton/Obama would have given Democrats 16 years of whitehouse control.

If Obama's the top of the ticket, Democrats will lose in November and its quite possible that Democrats will be locked out of the whitehouse till 2016.

If Obama gets the nomination he'll lose in November by a landslide.

You Might Be An Idiot! :-)

If you think that Obama with no experience fighting for universal health care can get it for you better than Hillary Clinton. Who anticipated this current health care crisis back in 1993, and fought a pitched battle against overwhelming odds to get universal health care for all the American people.

You Might Be An Idiot! :-)

If you think that Obama with no experience can manage, and get us out of two wars better than Hillary Clinton. Whose ;-) husband (Bill Clinton) went to war only when he was convinced that he absolutely had to. Then completed the mission in record time against a nuclear power. AND DID NOT LOSE THE LIFE OF A SINGLE AMERICAN SOLDIER. NOT ONE!

You Might Be An Idiot! :-)

If you think that Obama with no experience saving the environment is better than Hillary Clinton. Whose ;-) husband (Bill Clinton) left office with the greatest amount of environmental cleanup, and protections in American history.

You Might Be An Idiot! :-)

If you think that Obama with little or no education experience is better than Hillary Clinton. Whose ;-) husband (Bill Clinton) made higher education affordable for every American. And created higher job demand and starting salary's than they had ever been before or since.

If you think that Obama with no experience will be better than Hillary Clinton who spent 8 years at the right hand of President Bill Clinton. Who is already on record as one of the greatest Presidents in American history.

You Might Be An Idiot! :-)

If you think that you can change the way Washington works with pretty speeches from Obama, rather than with the experience, and political expertise of two master politicians ON YOUR SIDE like Hillary and Bill Clinton..

You Might Be An Idiot! :-)

If you think all those Republicans voting for Obama in the Democratic primaries, and caucuses are doing so because they think he is a stronger Democratic candidate than Hillary Clinton. :-)

p.s. You Might Be An Idiot! :-)

If you don't know that the huge amounts of money funding the Obama campaign to try and defeat Hillary Clinton is coming in from the insurance, and medical industry, that has been ripping you off, and killing you and your children. And denying you, and your loved ones the life saving medical care you needed. All just so they can make more huge immoral profits for them-selves off of your suffering...

You see, back in 1993 Hillary Clinton had the audacity, and nerve to try and get quality, affordable universal health care for everyone to prevent the suffering and needless deaths of hundreds of thousands of you each year. :-)

Approx. 100,000 of you die each year from medical accidents from a rush to profit by the insurance, and medical industry. Another 120,000 of you die each year from treatable illness that people in other developed countries don't die from. And I could go on, and on...

Ambassador Andrew Young in an interview with "The Newsmakers Journal."

Courtesy The Newsmakers Journal "I want Obama to be president," said former UN Ambassador Andrew Young, "... in 2016. It's not a matter of being inexperienced. It is a matter of being young."

In an interview with The Newsmakers Journal, Young explains with candor why he believes now is not the time for Obama to serve as president.

"There's a certain level of maturity," Young said. "You have to learn to take a certain amount of sh*t. ... Leadership requires suffering."

Saying, "Barack Obama does not have the support network yet to get to be president," Young added: "To put a brother in there by himself is to set him up for crucifixion. His time will come, and the world will be ready a visionary leadership. Now, somebody's got to clean up the mess."

Then Young offered this story about Bill Clinton: "Bill [Clinton] is every bit as black as Barack. He's probably gone out with more black women than Barack. [laughs] I'm clowning, but when they went to Nelson Mandela's inauguration -- there was a whole plane load of black folks who went down there. After the inauguration, there was a party. [Bill] Clinton was the one who said, "Let's start a Soul Train line!" All these middle class, bourgie folks looked around ... and Bill did the moon walk down the Soul Train line. And Hillary pulled her skirt up above her knees and she got down and went on through, too."

Why do Obama nuts constantly lie about Hillary Clinton's plans?

Why do they gleefully adopt right-wing anti-Clinton talking points?

If Obama gets the nomination, who can he point to as an example of a successful Democratic President after he and his supporters have totally trashed the reputation of the only two term Democratic President since FDR?

Obama's whole campaign is based on the idea that we should trust a young guy with half a terrm in the US Senate and no executive experience rather than a highly experienced Senator who's even more likable and is also a war hero.

When the bumper stickers come out that say --

Who would you rather vote for, the war hero or the coke-head

What will Obama supporters do.

Obama's unelectable in a general election.

Is winning the primary so important to the Obama nuts that they don't care about throwing away Democrats best chance in years?

Do they even understand that Obama's far-left voting record eliminates any chance of centrist Democrats voting for him, let alone independents and Republicans?

Don't they realize how much has changed now that people know that Obama went to a "Black Liberation Theology" church for 20 years.

Obama can't win, he can only cause Democrats to lose.

They know that Hillary's plan is funded off a windfall profits tax so it doesn't decrease highway funds but they don't care that they propagate lies.

Is it any wonder that Clinton supporters will never vote for someone who runs that kind of dirty campaign?

_____She goes to NC, her accent becomes southern.

_____She steals all of Obama's ideas "Washington is not listening" etc., and tries to sell them as her own. The problem is Obama's ideas are genuine and they are the reason for his candidacy. She is just pandering and doesn't mean a word of what she says.

_____She thinks people are dumb enough not to figure out that she is financed by NYC money folks. The same folks who pushed hard to oust Saddam, the same folks who are behind the credit crisis, the same folks who are pushing for war with Iran. That's the reason she voted for the vote and that's the reason she voted to declare Iran's revolutionary forces terrorist, and that's the reason she went with her rant of "obliterate Iran".

EVERYTHING she says or does counts on either people's stupidity or racism.

Ask yourself why conservative Democrats like Sam Nunn are endorsing Obama. Could it be they realize Obama is the candidate who has the courage to clean up DC of Lobbies? Could it be that those same Lobbies who have immense influence over the media are working hard to trash him? Were they behind the "Obama is muslim" emails? Why are they so afraid of losing power?

So many questions and so little time to answer them. Please put America FIRST.

For all the innocently naive (dumb) people who do not understand why the (BS Name Alert)"Gas Tax Holiday" is a Joke. Here is why:

1) by the time it goes through, we'll be saving more like 10 or 5 cents per gallon from right now.

2) when "Holiday" is over, prices will jump the full 18-23 cents again.

3) This Tax money is used on our Federal Roads and Infastructure (you know, like bridges over the Mississippi.

4) It does not attack the problem: Which is increased demand and static supply. With this over-hyped "holiday", demand will increase, raising the natural price of gas, so now, you've eliminated any benefit to the highway repair program and raised the price of gas to what it was in the first place, if not more.

Get it? Supply VS Demand. Increase Demand, Price go up.

It's not worth the headache over a couple of cents.

Demand go down, price down.

INCREASE the tax on gas, and the price will go down.

There's no getting around it. Oil is just about dead.

Serious changes need to be made in our way of life, but no one wants to see it.

First casualty:

Suburbia.

Good Riddance.

The Obama Campaign lost a good opportunity to go after Hillary on her copied "dumb a$$" McCain idea on a gas holiday tax. Obama should have countered by not only pointing out that Hillary is just political pandering and the problems of a "gas tax holiday" outweighs the merit, but also reminding voters of common sense approaches to saving fuel through improved mileage. Obama should be talking about personal responsibility to reduce fuel consumption. He should speak to conservative driving habits that every driver can do like no jack-rabbit starts and stops, driving the speed limits, keeping tires properly inflated, avoid idling or prolonged warmups of your vehicles, and remove any excess weight of items stored in your car. Doing these types of things can save you anywhere between $20 to $100 over the same three month period as the proposed "gas tax holiday".

Common Obama and his campaign...common sense approaches save real money and don't pander!

When George Stephanopoulos of ABC asked Hillary Clinton to name ONE economist who thought her gas tax plan was a good idea, her response was "I'm not going to put my lot in with economists." I think if anyone had any doubts about what a great president Clinton would be, they can now rest in peace. She would make a great president. I mean, wouldn't you want a president who doesn't care what the economists think about the economy or her economic policies? Ignorance is blissful.

Educate yourself on the tax. The whole of the economics profession thinks Hillary's gas tax idea is the stupidest thing they have heard in ages. I hope she gets elected, and you enjoy the 33 cents extra a day it will save you (after she convinces the whole Democratic leadership in Congress and the whole Republican leadership that her stupid plan merits a bill), while the roads that those taxes help to maintain go to hell, demand for oil goes up, prices rise further as a result of increased demand, the oil companies price in the "windfall" tax into the price you end up paying, and the environment gets further screwed. Great great idea, and I congratulate the Hillary supporters on standing up for another asinine proposal instead of really addressing the problem. Great idea indeed. Indeed, even Paul Krugman, Hillary's economic cheerleader on the New York Times criticized her proposal. That's how bad it is. Go Hillary! Pander away...

Obama is desperate to get the pundits and the media off a clear discussion of Black Liberation Theology.

So he manufactures a dispute over the gasoline tax holiday.

However, it is the same proposal Obama backed recently as a State Senator - so Obama changed his position in order to create this controversy.

AND what does Obama do in addition - he calls Hillary's credibility into question on the issue !

The real Obama is showing.

Let's get back to Black Liberation Theology - Obama should tell the nation if he really believes black children learn differently as compared to white children, as Rev. Wright said in Detroit.

Obama needs to answer these questions.

We need clarity on this. Obama is not running for a minor office.

Be serious people.

So Chris Obama is addressing the gas tax issue is his last ad, but the issue has become more one of credibility than of policy. We can see that in the exchange with Andrea Mitchell. Howard refuses to answer the question of whether they are really going to go through with this?

Further, they have yet to adequately answer the question of how the benefits of the gas tax holiday goes to the people who need it instead of the oil companies.

Judging from their answers they really don't care about the details now and ironically refuse to listen to anyone who has any "real" experience with gas tax policy.

So, Obama's ad hits the bullseye of this issue: Do we want someone who is willing to say anything and who offers the wrong solutions - even when they know they are wrong - for political gain? Or do we want someone we can trust to tell us the truth about what is going on in our economy and what needs to be done to fix that?

=====================
Andrea Mitchell:
So if the windfall profit tax is not passed, you would forgo the gas tax holiday?

Howard Wolfson:

Here's the beauty of the American political process. We are in a great debate about this issue. Senator Obama has joined the debate. Senator McCain has joined the debate. Senator Clinton has joined the debate. Each one of them have a different point of view on the issue. We believe we have the right point of view. I'm sure Senator Obama thinks he does, and Senator McCain thinks he does. We are going to have an election tomorrow in two states that have been hotly contested. Voters have been following this issue. They have been following this campaign. They have been following the debate. Let's see what they say tomorrow. I believe the American political process is remarkably adaptive to..

Andrea Mitchell

Guys, I'm just asking you whether it is truth in advertising, whether its accurate to suggest that the two would be simultaneous, that one would fund the other?

Bonjedi to address your posting at 7:48

Sorry however am I to take your comment as any mention of Black Liberation Theology is racist???

Is that your position???

First, Obama is putting himself up for office. His views are fair game.

Most importantly, Obama brought his children to a church for years which had Black Liberation Theology as its guiding theme.

IN FACT, the church had on its own website an advancement of a "Black Value System" which was presented as separate from a white value system.

This is Obama's church - the same church which he stood by in his Philadelphia speech.

All this is fair game. No one told Obama to run for President.

Obama's views and his actions go DIRECTLY to what kind of decision maker he would be.

Also, Obama's lack of experience causes the public to look at such things because simply we do not have 25 years of experience on Capitol Hill to look at and evaluate Obama with, as we did with Biden and Dodd.

The America public deserves answers to these questions.

What does Obama believe about Black Liberation Theology????

All this is fair game.

Also Obama's own comments about "typical white person" bring up questions.

So for you, bonjedi, to imply that any of these issues are out of bounds is simply wrong.

I can see that you would like to silence such issues, because the questioning may bring up issues that you would rather not talk about.

However you can not silence people.

How about you deposit 4% of your gas bill in my savings account then?

Xander - "By lowering the price of gasoline will only cause demand to go up, which in turn will raise prices."

If the rising price of gas, which has almost doubled since the beginning of 2007, has barely and only very recently made any sort of dent in demand, what makes you think that removing an artificial 18.4 cents is going to all of a sudden increase demand?

Elizabeth - "If the tax comes off, the price stays the same."

We don't know that. In Illinois when Obama tried, a government funded study was inconclusive as to what benefit, if any, was passed onto the consumer. Econ theory suggests it would not be the full 18.4 cents. But the key word there is theory.

Economists have a horrible record with respect to predictions, especailly with respect predicting the effects of price changes on inelastic commoddities like Hillary's proposed gas tax policy.

Because most economists aren't trained in the physical sciences most Economists don't even know the difference between precision and accuracy.

Scientists and engineeers often complain that economists and other "social scientists" practice mathematical modeling without a license.

To people who do serious math modeling of physical systems, economists are a joke.

They can't predict anything very well, and most of them are wrong for their entire careers.

The problem is that they wildly oversimplify the systems they model without knowing what effects they need to keep and what effects are safe to throw out.

In the case of the Gas Tax, they ignore the effects of people's driving on the purchases they make, vacations they take, and general state of mind, and it may very well be that the morale boosting effects outweigh everything else.

If you lined all the economists in the world end to end they still couldn't come up with a good prediction.

By the way, the math modeling people like me do makes things like your PC, Ipod, and Cell Phone chips work, and we get it right the first time because mask sets for state of the art chips cost millions of dollars.

Economists are one step above astrologers.

They can't predict squat.

Howard's real answer to Andrea Mitchell's question 'So if the windfall profit tax is not passed, you would forgo the gas tax holiday?'

Andrea we could give two flying ferbies whether the gas tax passes or the windfall profits tax passes, if we get the votes on the promisses we've made on this issue tomorrow we are good. We are really good. God bless/ed us. That's the beauty of the American political process promise a couple of bucks, throw a little mud, and walk off with the keys to the treasury. We love America. If you have learned any basic logic, you will know Obama's argument is invalid: you can't say God created the world in 7 days because bible said so. Such argument is fine religion but bad logic. It is also wrong to argue the gas tax would not work because some experts said so.

I can't see how come Obama cultists could be educated, or there is simply no basic entrance standard for the US colleges.

Here's the Clinton Campaigns response to Andrea Mitchell, NBC correspondent and wife of Alan Greenspan, an economist.

Clinton Campaign Conference Call May 5

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tzHfTa0T2c0
Start at 52:48

Andrea Mitchell:

Let me ask you a quick gas tax question. In your commercials on
the stump she is talking about having the oil companies pay for
the gas tax, but the sequence would be that - best case from your
perspective - there would be a gas tax holiday and any windfall profits tax would be down the road .. at at best. Correct? I mean there is no question that there would not be windfall profits tax passed in the short term and certainly not signed by this president.

Howard Wolfson:

Well we believe that the two need to go hand in hand. We believe we need to have relief at the pump, that instead of consumers paying for the gas tax the oil companies ought to be paying for it. we believe that it needs to be done in a fiscally responsible manner.

Andrea Mitchell:

Isnt that fantasy? I mean the president did say that he was open to the idea obviously with McCain supporting it there is a scenario where this (gas tax holiday) might be passed, but there is no way a windfall profit tax would be passed anytime soon, so aren't you talking about if your proposal were to get through, you're talking about in the short term at least blowing a hole in the deficit.

Howard Wolfson:

No because our proposal has the gas tax holiday linked specifically to the oil companies making up the revenue.

Howard Wolfson

That is Senator Clinton's proposal and what I'm saying is tomorrow voters will have an opportunity to weigh in on this and our hope is that they weigh in in the affirmative and that will send a very strong signal to policymakers and decisionmakers and elected officials around the country that this is a proposal whose time has come. I believe the American political process is remarkably adaptive to public sentiment. That's the beauty of our democracy. Let's see what happens tomorrow.

You people who support Hillary because of this are a cheap date.

P.S. It won't lower gas prices, it will cost 300,000 jobs, the highways will deteriorate, people will die and cars will be damaged, and Hillary will not push this through Congress and Bush's veto because she is too busy campaigning.

I've followed politics closely since I was first old enough to vote in 1975. I'm a fairly conservative, middle class, college educated, business owning white guy. I put a lot of importance on honesty, character and the ability to think rationally. I'm a registered Republican, but in November I'm voting for Obama, without question. The way this country is headed I cannot imagine why anyone would think it's a good idea to do otherwise.

Hillary is toast, by the way. It's over except for the part where she gives up. The only thing she can accomplish now is to try to damage Obama to the point where he will lose to McCain, setting herself up for 2012. If you don't think that's the plan, my, my, you just don't know Hillary.

Uh, I'm making money off the fact that economists were wrongly predicting that Spring crude oil prices would drop to the $70-$80 range.

They predicted $70-$80 early Spring crude up to early this year, and only changed their predictions when early Spring literally arrived and it was too late for them to be right. These are also the same economists who couldn't predict what happened to the stability of food prices once Bush announced the corn-based ethanol biofuels initiatives.

The fact is, there is no area of the economy in which "the economists" have been the most ignorant, wrong and foolish than commodity prices in the past couple of years. Well, I guess they have been more wrong about mortgage-backed derivatives and the stability of the finance and banking systems of the U.S.

If, as they claim, the gas tax holiday is such a trivial non-issue, then why are they all jumping on it, sending letters, etc. as if it were the push to prove global warming or that stem cell research funding is needed? The fact that hundreds of these pro-Obama academics are jumping on this non-issue is self-evident proof that they are politicizing a debate for partisan reasons!

The most incompetent thing an economist can possibly do right now is predict commodity prices and the systematic effect of demand-side market manipulations like taxes at the pump and windfall profits taxes. If it were that easy to make deterministic conclusions about the price of oil, the problem of spiraling oil prices would have been contained two years ago. Globalization and financial market dislocations have upended long-accepted economic models and truisms.

The only reason these economists are engaging in this incompetent activism over what they say is a non-issue about commodity prices that they've failed to predict accurately for years now, is that pro-Obama media outlets like the Washington Post is bending over backward to publish the incompetent political activism of academics over what they themselves claim is a non-issue.

As Krauthammer pointed out, this all plays into Clinton's campaign strategy to contrast her pragmatic, results-oriented presentation of her candidacy versus the clueless, academic talking heads. In this case, I'd say she's spot on and the academic economists look like the chattering, out of touch elites that they are.

We do need a gas tax to help fund new alternatives, even new ideas like small condensed matter nuclear science (aka 'cold fusion') initiatives based on radical new ideas and a host of other technologies that can help it along, including electric hybrids, hydraulic hybrid autos/trucks, and nanotechnology that can help in many areas including battery technology.

We also need to ramp up and provide incentives for solar and wind power for areas of the US that can rely on it.

A tax can be used to provide incentives and grants to companies with new approaches and radical ideas, much like the X-prize is trying to do. With the huge federal budget and the existing welfare, and entitlement programs this tax could be put to good use if monitored closely.

How we pay for it seems to be the debate.

Do we 1) take oil windfalls profits of companies/individuals as an extra tax added to their profits? since they have apparently failed after 30 years to do so 2) take it from the existing gas tax that normally goes to the US infrastructure(cancelling the fuel for the summer), or do we tax via other approaches like adding a sales tax to automobile/large SUV purchases to those who appear to be able to absorb higher gas costs and afford the tax increase and apparently seem to be able to drive these larger vehicles anyway?

I'm for the most direct approach, where we can see how the tax is collected and where the money is going to keep all players (and government) honest !!

Today in my Economics class the professor had a little exercise. We had to figure out a way that the gas tax holiday could work on a national level without increasing the cost to the end consumer by at least as much as the tax was worth.

Interestingly enough, we all failed, every last one of us. It was clearly impossible, as the professor explained. If you remove the gas tax from the entire nation then oil companies just raise the price of gasoline. It could happen the same day the gas tax holiday started, and the American Consumer would never even see a difference in the price of gasoline.

Only difference is that people think that they are saving money, blue collar workers who depend on gas tax funds for work projects lose their jobs or hours, and oil companies make more money.

Just to add, I make less than 20k a year and my parents don't pay for my college, so I'm about as "Elitist" as a PBJ Sandwich, which is mostly what I can afford to eat.

Obama wants a middle class tax cut and a $1,000 tax credit per family. He wants part of the gas tax go toward alternate energy.

Obama thinks you all are grown-up enough to understand that Hillary's plan is not even a band-aid solution.

Hillary's plan would cost 300,000 highway jobs, and the highways and bridges will deteriorate. Congress knows this and will never pass it.

Hillary cannot give you a gas tax holiday this summer. Congress has to pass it and Bush has to sign it. If she is serious, Senator Clinton will go back to Washington and start this legislation, immediately. This has nothing to do with the president who will take office in 2009.

Posted by: Kellyanne | May 5, 2008 8:28 PM | Report abuse

By lowering the price of gasoline will only cause demand to go up, which in turn will raise prices. Then when the tax is finally put back into effect you can expect to see record breaking prices. But maybe that Commi will just seize the oil companies profits and then she could subsidize the price of gas right before she obliterates Iran.

It is astounding to me that the media has devoted so much time and energy to the "Rev. Wright controversy" but virtually zero attention to the fact that Senator Clinton has spent the last two desperate months lying and pandering to the public for votes.

Every single economist and editorial board and politician (other than Senator McCain) has criticized this Gas Tax Holiday Gimmick as a ridiculous and counter-productive "solution", whether short-term or not.

There is no support for such a measure in Congress and President Bush would not sign such legislation even if it passed.

There is no holiday from taxes and even the "bitter" people posting are really not that delusional. The truth is;(if you can bear it) Obama represents a major change coming and conservative minds do not take easily to change. Listening and trusting a member of any minority group takes a huge leap of faith and a broad outlook on life. Middle America seems afraid to embark on this road to change. They have to be encouraged to unite just as we Canadians have to encourage our neighbors to the south to try the metric system, sign off on land mines, stop calling the UN "irrelevant", take a close look at the Kyoto agreement, try seeing foreign nations as potential partners and not just as economic interests. When we see some movement down this diverse avenue, we will know that "the new politics" has arrived and Mr. Obama has initiated this change.

One of the biggest reasons why oil is choking the average American at the moment is because of the weak dollar. While a weak dollar purportedly aids manufacturing and may ultimately create jobs in the U.S. manufacturing sector as the effective employment costs of actually producing something in America continue to diminish (and don't forget the lack of labor protections which make it much easier to fire employees en masse in the U.S. than as opposed to, say, Europe), there's a real argument that the Bush administrations emphasis on a weak dollar has crossed over and become a hidden tax on the average American. OPEC recently noted that the price of a barrel of gasoline may eventually reach $200 due to the weak dollar.

Exchange rate imbalances reduce the weight of current oil prices on most of the rest of the world, but not on us. I don't argue that a weaker dollar does not have its uses, but the current hands off policy within the Bush administration seriously threatens U.S. autonomy.

An intervention on the currency markets aimed at reducing the dollar's free fall by 20-25% (targeting a euro exchange of, say, between $1.25 & $1.30) would more effectively aid the average American at the pump than any illusory tax holiday while still leaving the American manufacturing sector in an advantageous position.

But don't hold your breath for an intervention from the Bush administration nor for an actual gas holiday this summer. I think the term "just words" might adequately describe the latter idea. I admire that Senator Obama has at least taken the chance to speak out about the gas holiday for what it is, pandering, but don't be fooled, nobody is doing anything for the average American at the moment. And no one will until next year, when there is a new President.

Obama's campaign is happy to talk about gasoline prices - it gets the Wright story and Black Liberation Theology off of the newspapers.

That is wrong.

This country does need a discussion about race - but first the country needs to learn a little more about Black Liberation Theology and its economic theories.

Rev. Wright in his March 1, 2007 interview was asked about why his website was talking about a "Black Values System" - implying there was a separate "White Values System."

Would someone please explain this ???

Obama brought his children to this church year after year.

Obama has to answer these questions - the Obama people should be happy there is a gasoline price debate because the heat is off Obama a bit.

Because it is not going to happen so the time needs to be spent on real issues. One of Hillary's people on CNN said they know it can never pass but at least she is offering the people something. I think my head just spun around. Offer something people want that you have no way to deliver and pass it off as something real. then blame it on someone else for not happening. That is what she did in NY when she couldn't create the jobs she promised when she was running. She blamed it on Al Gore for not winning. After this race she will try to blame Obama next week for no gas tax relief even though she tried. She lives in Bu*l S**t bizarro world and thinks she can just lie her way out of or into anything.

create green jobs but now she says she
wants a gas tax holiday from the $$ that pay for current infrastructure jobs (~310,000) and use the windfall profit tax $$ she promised to use for new green tech jobs just to pay for the current infrastructure jobs she would lose without the gas tax. Is this the new math??? She pledges to punish corporations for outsourcing Americans
jobs but is a huge supporter of Tata Communications' outsourcing/insourcing of well-paying tech jobs to Indian workers instead of qualified American workers. Now who is out of touch with the American voter???

No, Shiv, there is no hypocrisy there.

For one thing, economists agree that a gas tax suspension has a better chance of working on the state level, where Obama supported it, because states can still acquire gas on a relatively unchanged market if the rest of the country doesn't suspend the tax. If the whole country suspends the tax, it changes the market, increasing consumption to an extent where supplies would be strained and prices would certainly rise. In that case consumers would not see any benefit.

For another thing, Obama learned from his experience at the state level that even on the state level a gas tax suspension didn't work as well as he had hoped.

So why haven't Mr. and Mrs. Experience learned this, too?

PROOF POSITIVE THAT OBAMA AND REZKO ARE PARTNERS

Examine the Cook County land records:

The deed for the house that the Obama's purchased for $300k less than the asking price is from Frederic Wondisford and his wife, Sally Radovic, to the Obama's Northern Trust Company Land Trust #10209 (established as such for "confidentiality") is dated 15 June 2005 and is recorded 21 June 2005 as Document #0517233010. Declared value is $1,650,000.00.

The deed for the vacant lot is from Wondisford/Radovic to Rita M. Rezko. This deed is dated 15 June 2005 and recorded a day earlier, on 20 June 2005 as Document #0517133004. Declared value is $625,000.00.

Examination of the Cook County records very clearly indicates that Rita M. Rezko conveyed the entire lot to Obama's Northern Trust Company Land Trust #10209 on 11 January 2006 and recorded 16 February 2006 as Document #0604733162. Declared value is $104,500.00.

VERY IMPORTANTLY, thorough and careful examination of all Cook County land records fails to locate a deed back to Rita M. Rezko from the Obama's Northern Trust Company Land Trust #10209.

There is a "wild' deed indicated from Rita M. Rezko to "5050 S. Greenwood LLC". This is an Illinois limited liability corporation with the same address as Rezmar Corporation that is registered to the indicted Tony Rezko. (This deed is considered "wild" because it is not supported by any ownership deed from the Obama's Land Trust.)

Furthermore, Tony Rezko's registered corporation, 5050 S. Greenwood LLC, then pledges the entire vacant lot in favor of a mortgage THAT IS STILL OPEN with Fifth Third Bank for the amount of $375,000.00. This is Document #0703357023 recorded 2 February 2007.

THUS, THE ENTIRE VACANT LOT IS TITLED TO SEN. BARACK AND MICHELLE OBAMA (IN THEIR LAND TRUST FOR CONFIDENTIALITY) AND ALLOWED BY SENATOR BARACK AND MICHELLE OBAMA TO BE PLEDGED BY A TONY REZKO CORPORATION TO SECURE A LOAN.

This is contrary to what has been stated by Senator Obama; contrary to what has been stated by Senator Obama's campaign staff: and contrary to what has been reported.

It must be noted that a seemingly intelligent Harvard educated attorney does not make such unknowing errors as stated above. The above is obvious intent not "oversight".

Hey Shiv - Yes, he did support such a holiday in Illinois. He has said so. In fact, what he went on to say was that they found that it did absolutely NOTHING for the average consumer and that prices did not decline any.

Imagine that, someone who calls upon his own past experience on an issue and recognizing that there needs to be a different approac this time. I thought HRC was the ony with all the experience...

And why doesn't HRC explain to all of us regular stiffs exactly how it is she plans to actually get this tax holiday enacted. Isn't she all about "getting things done"? Wasn't she the one who ridiculed BHO for his "pie-in-the-sky" ideas for which he had no actual plan on how to get them enacted?

You're kidding, right? Hundreds of economists have publicly declared their opposition to this stupid gas tax suspension. Not one person with any credibility on the issue has supported it. Why would you think Obama might be on tenuous ground when it comes to that? My guess is that the ad doesn't waste time exploring the gas tax idea because everyone knows how stupid it is. Everyone knows Clinton is using it for pandering purposes only.

The point of the ad is for people to realize that Clinton's pandering on this issue and others is not just a cute sign of how scrappy she is. It's the sort of behavior that prevents us from making our government work the way it should.

Posted by: Len | May 5, 2008 6:56 PM | Report abuse

Words and 37th...

The reasoning is very simple.

Cutting the tax simply increases demand. And supply and demand is what drives the price. So they go up.

On top of that, the oil companies simply adjust and up their own pricing, and take extra profit.

Additionally, Bush will still be President (if no one noticed) and Hillary's "plan" of adding a "windfall tax" to the Oil companies will simply get vetoed.

So, here we have a plan that

a) won't work (every economist agrees... and it may be convenient for Hillary to now dismiss economists... but believe it or not, they actually have an education and know a thing or two)

b) won't get passed (or even introduced) anyway

What this all adds up to is a big game of Political Hocus Pocus, and Obama has called her on it.

The "Obama is a liar" story is yet another fine example of the Clintons taking something that undeniably applies to them and trying to attach it to someone else. Hillary is a proven liar at this point, and Bill, of course, has been disbarred for lying under oath as the POTUS. (contrary to what Clinton supporters will tell you, Bill got in trouble not for getting a BJ--which no one could ever be opposed to--but for lying under oath.)

Moreover, the Clintons are so full of ludicrous contradictions that it's getting hard to keep track of it all.

"Obama is not experienced enough to be president", yet "Obama is fit to be my VP" (the sole qualification for which is eligibility for being president)

"I'm the one you can count on to make the right call at 3am", yet Clinton was "tired" and "slipped up" five separate times when she referenced being under sniper fire. (this is the one I find most exhausting when Clinton supporters just laugh it off...as if having a senior moment is fine and dandy for the POTUS)

Clinton doesn't trust economic experts (they're "elitist"), yet she does trust neocon foreign policy experts (who have displayed remarkably poor judgement for the past 7 years)

Obama is somehow an elitist, yet the Clintons and their $109 million in income is not.

Please.

In Indiana, you can't do automated calls... so how is SurveyUSA, which isn't supposed to have any live call centers, even polling?

This is what the other pollster, InsideAdvantage had to say:

"Consequently, our ability to have accurately polled the winner in most contests this season is hampered by this constraint in Indiana. This is a phone room poll, and phone room polls are now no longer, in my judgment, as reliable as automated polls for horserace contests such as these primaries."

Found it interesting to say the least ...

ODE TO OBAMA
by Publius II

There once was a man named Obama
His life began with drama
An African Muslim father
An eccentric white mama

Obama's white grandparents
They gave him a charmed life
Raised on the beaches of Hawaii
Far from ghetto strife

He went to private schools
Fourteen thousand dollars a year
Working-class white folks
They were nowhere near

He attended Columbia
Then Harvard Law
A very soft and liberal upbringing
Something Americans eventually saw

He then went to Chicago
Nation of Islam, Farrakhan, Black Panthers and Jackson
The only friends he made
All from the extreme left-wing faction

He joined a radical church
His Pastor downright insane
Blacks and whites, he said
Think with different parts of their brain

His church praised a man named Cone
With hateful opinions he was filled
He said white people were "the devil"
And Gods who love whites must be killed

Obama first ran for State Senate
With permission from Chicago's Marxist King
A domestic terrorist named Ayers
Obama kissed his ring

He wrote a book called "Dreams From My Father"
From start to finish a racist rant
After people finally read it
They said: "Obama, no we can't"

He wrote how he rejected his mother's race
And that Malcolm X was a hero
People had a clear warning
Obama was a dangerous zero

He was then elected to the U.S. Senate
Obama's ego grew very bold
He barely served a year
I will run for President was the story he told

He spent millions to stage rallies
The crowds would yell and cheer
But then it all fizzled out
Typical white folks, he said, cling to religion, guns and beer

His wife said America was mean
She was never really proud
Her Black Separatist thesis at Princeton
Became a campaign cloud

People said he was a Muslim
His supporters scoffed and jeered
Then his Black Liberation Church was exposed
And Obama's ugly head was reared

He tried to recover in a speech on race
The left-wing media offered raves
But he said white folks had an "untrained ear"
And abolitionists in Pennsylvania rolled over in their graves

He claimed to be a uniter
He would bring people together all at once
But after his speech in Philadelphia
He proved to be a demographic dunce

He tried once more to persuade whites
But his bowling was a mess
He rolled a 37
Like a 5-year-old girl in a dress

He then played basketball
He drove the ball to the rack
But when all was said and done
He nearly had a heart attack

He said damn those white voters
Their Mutual Funds I will tax
I'll double the capital gains rate
Like an old-school Liberal hack

He opposed a gas tax holiday
He said it wasn't a winner
$40 wasn't much he said
Just the weekly budget for the average family's dinner

He wouldn't cover his heart
As the National Anthem played
It's a meaningless gesture he said
But Americans felt betrayed

He wouldn't wear a flag pin
It was against his One World view
It doesn't matter he said
And the American people stewed

He first called terrorist Ayers his friend
Then said this man he didn't really know
More deceit and cover-ups
Obama's lies began to grow

Farrakhan, Jackson and Sharpton
Three of Obama's greatest fans
He tried hiding them in the closet
So not to further offend the white man

Then came his anti-American Pastor
Obama's mentor for 20 years
He preened, shucked and jived
White people rose up and sneered

NBC and the New York Times
They tried each day to save Obama's campaign
But real Americans said "FU"
And Obama spiraled down the drain

His name was Barrack Hussein Obama
Running for a second Jimmy Carter term
Weak on National Security
A little, pacifist worm

The radical left-wing Democrats
A Presidential race lost once again
Is it really a surprise
They've lost 7 of the last 10?

Found it interesting to say the least...

ODE TO OBAMA
by Publius II

There once was a man named Obama
His life began with drama
An African Muslim father
An eccentric white mama

Obama's white grandparents
They gave him a charmed life
Raised on the beaches of Hawaii
Far from ghetto strife

He went to private schools
Fourteen thousand dollars a year
Working-class white folks
They were nowhere near

He attended Columbia
Then Harvard Law
A very soft and liberal upbringing
Something Americans eventually saw

He then went to Chicago
Nation of Islam, Farrakhan, Black Panthers and Jackson
The only friends he made
All from the extreme left-wing faction

He joined a radical church
His Pastor downright insane
Blacks and whites, he said
Think with different parts of their brain

His church praised a man named Cone
With hateful opinions he was filled
He said white people were "the devil"
And Gods who love whites must be killed

Obama first ran for State Senate
With permission from Chicago's Marxist King
A domestic terrorist named Ayers
Obama kissed his ring

He wrote a book called "Dreams From My Father"
From start to finish a racist rant
After people finally read it
They said: "Obama, no we can't"

He wrote how he rejected his mother's race
And that Malcolm X was a hero
People had a clear warning
Obama was a dangerous zero

He was then elected to the U.S. Senate
Obama's ego grew very bold
He barely served a year
I will run for President was the story he told

He spent millions to stage rallies
The crowds would yell and cheer
But then it all fizzled out

The real issues are Obama's lack of experience, his lack of a track record, his failure to do either in Chicago or in the US Senate any of the things he claims he is able to to, his arrogance in believing that he is smarter and more savvy than anyone in washington, and simply put, his narcissisim and his delusions of grandure.

Hillary was born in Illinois.

Obama and his supporters seem to believe that he was born in a manger.

That job is already taken.

We're electing a President, not anointing the second coming of Christ.

HIllary is living true to her reputation as a liar - she promises people things that she has no intention of following through on. She'll forget about it soon enough. BTW, if she isnt smart enough to know that this tax holiday is bad for about everyone, she isnt then qualified to be president and have to deal with far more complicated economic issues.

MarkInAustin - "Dave! - My wife and I drove to Durham and back two weeks ago and saw more tread on the road than ever. "

Durham, NC? Roundtrip that would be close to 3000 miles, providing ample opportunity to experience this. I noticed no more than usual during my trips to both ends of PA a few weeks ago (but nowhere near your drive). Maybe you just had bad luck. But you might be right. Theoretically, inspections should be catching this.

And actually, since BHO is the only candidate capable of bridging the two parties, only he could have accomplished legislation like that so fast :-)

Anyone have internal polling for Indiana and North Carolina? Someone posted some data last time which helped me win my Pennsylvania betting pool.

I need a leg up on my Indiana pool :-)

Thanks in advance! :-)

I suggest you climb out of your little Amercian media box and READ! The rate of decline, the decline in relative dollars, for housing is at an all time low. We are on target to have better than 30% inflation THIS YEAR. That's on basic stuff like food and medicine, heat, electricity - you know, the basic necessities of life? All of this is far worse than the Great Depression. All that the Fed is doing is staving this impending disaster off.

Here is a web site of translated articles from foreign press sources. I suggest you bookmark it and read a little something every single day:
http://watchingamerica.com/News/index.html

Keep an open mind. The rubbish you read here, watch on the evening news, or see on cable, is basically the sponsored blatherings of corporations, designed to keep you ill informed and stupid. Btter yet, leqrn to read a foreign language, Spanish, German or French to start, and read a variety of on-line news from various sources. In particular, today, read the editorial in the Saudi press about Clinton's "obliterate" remarks and, tomorrow, read their reaction about her promise to wreck OPEC. --- http://www.arabnews.com/?page=7§ion=0&article=109401&d=29&m=4&y=2008

It ain't going to happen, but it has surely alienated one of the last friends we have in the Arab world.

This debate is making no sense - give the people the money - what is the big deal??

Yes Nancy Pelosi, and the Obama allies on the Hill, what is the tax holiday going to do, prevent some of John Murtha's earmarks from getting funded ???

What kind of joke is this??

I simply do not understand the reasoning.

The new Clinton theme - "Obama's just another pol" - while self-evidently false, sends an interesting corollary message... "Why, he's no better than I am!"

JD - Do you know if STB still raises rates on rail freight to keep truckers competitive?

Posted by: MarkInAustin | May 5, 2008 5:30 PM | Report abuse

Dave! - two powerful Senators like McC and HRC could have done this by now. :-)

Anyway, bsimon, I think HRC missed her 5PM.

Dave! - My wife and I drove to Durham and back two weeks ago and saw more tread on the road than ever. Further, we actually saw three trucks blow their treads! We were hit by one. We also ran over part of the suspension of a truck, south of Dallas on the I20 bypass. I am thinking that the truckers are postponing maintenance to offset diesel costs.

The help for truckers historically comes from the Surface Transport Board which took over the ICC stuff, as I understand it.
ICC artificially raised rail freight rates to keep trucks competitive - and I think that is still policy. So the truckers are going to run to the STB to get rail rates raised, I think.

mibrooks27 - "In the middle of the worst economic disaster since the Great Depression, when the question of World War III hangs in the balance..."

Your perchance for overstatment amazes me at times. Not every recession (or more accurately economic downturn) compares to the Great Depression. People don't write it with caps for nothing! WWIII might be slightly more likely than 10 years ago but nowhere near what it was 25.

bsimon - "Ideally this press release would be published in time for tonight's news, particularly in the IN & NC markets. Its time to call those two to the carpet, with a very basic request: put up, or shut up."

Since the gas tax holiday is proposed to run from Memorial Day to Labor day, wouldn't the deadline technically be the end of this month? Actually with the way Washington moves and the way fiscal dollars work, the deadline would have had to have been Oct 1 last year, no?

MarkInAustin,
To further the discussion on one of the previous threads, I fully concur that infrastructure needs to be maintained. I would have to believe that even if the dollars actually disappeared from the fund (highly, highly unlikely even if neither McCain or Clinton propose a page worth of legislation), fixing bridges would remain a priority over landscaping or parking garages.

Ms. Clinton has called for more military involvement and more adventures in the Middle East and the partisan's here want to talk about a craven ploy to win votes from the morons that a CNN survey found didn't even understand where babies came from? Pullleeze! If she shameless bizarro wins the Presidency it will mean more of the same kind of mindless policies that Bush has already brought us. When some dumb jock or popularity seeking frat-rat or sority queen run for office, it is for their own sake of insecurity. Hillary is a shameless man hater and nutball.

On a more pleasant note, it looks like Hillary will win Indiana, proving that white rural folk ought to be required to get a license before breeding, and (of course!) winning the vote of the pathetic feminists in a block, while Obama will win North Carolina because black voters will flock to "one of their own" en mass. This will perpetuate this slow motion diasaster and ensure the ruin of the Democratic Party and the defeat of quite a few of the mindless self seeking fools that pass as representatives. Nw, if there was just some way of doing the same to the Republican's, maybe we could actually have a new party that might represent ordinary people for a while. What a mess. In the middle of the worst economic disaster since the Great Depression, when the question of World War III hangs in the balance, even "educated" bloggers waste their time blathering on and on about nothing. What a bunch of clowns.

For the life of me, I do not understand the opposition that any democrat would have to this tax holiday.

It is very democratic, and helps the poor the most.

How it is that some democrats oppose this? What is going on with the budget on Capitol Hill that they can not handle this????

Or would it require Pelosi to actually PASS a budget???

Why not just have Hillary and her deadenders hanging out outside the polls tomorrow, offering 20 bucks to anyone that votes for her?

It has tried to hand out donuts, it has tried with sidewalk salt. If the campaign is going to throw money away, might as well do it literally.

Hillary conviently forgets that some of the largest owners of stock in those big greedy oil companies are the NY state retirement plan, the NY state teachers retirement plan and the California state employees retirement plan. Each of these plans owns BILLIONS of dollars of common stock in ExxonMobil and others.

These plans are the recipients of some of these "windfall" profits. Let's ask the retirement plans in those states to kick in a little for us little guys!

CC, you forgot to mention that every economist on earth thinks this is the dumbest idea since the Soviet Union collapsed. Hillary isn't just pandering, she's doing it big time. She is also unfairly attacking critics as corporate stooges. This will raise substantial questions on her capacity to lead, think through issues clearly, and make the right decisions - exactly what Obama has been hinting at since the campaign began. But then again, American voters are dumb (how else would we end up with these two?), so they may fall for it.

If I were the Obama campaign, I would issue a press release to that effect - that McCain & Clinton are all talk & no action - and prove it by pointing out that neither has introduced legislation promoting their gas tax amnesty programs. Ideally this press release would be published in time for tonight's news, particularly in the IN & NC markets. Its time to call those two to the carpet, with a very basic request: put up, or shut up.

Chris- has Senator Clinton yet introduced legislation in the Senate putting her proposal in front of her colleagues? Or is her proposal thus far all talk, and no action?
