RNC Borrows $5 Million For Senate Races

The Republican National Committee has taken out a $5 million line of credit to help fund last minute efforts to keep Senate Democrats from winning a filibuster-proof 60 seat majority, according to an official with the committee.

Of the $5 million, $2 million is being directly transferred to the National Republican Senatorial Committee while $3 million is being devoted to coordinated expenditures that began over the last week.

"This effort not only helps fortify senators but it's good for the whole Republican ticket," said the RNC official, speaking on the condition of anonymity. "This is an investment in the entire ticket in addition to an unprecedented get out the vote effort."

With the White House apparently slipping away and House Republicans looking at losses of 20 or more seats, the Senate is being painted as the last, best chance for Republicans to hold some semblance of power within Congress.

Right now, three states are largely seen as near-certain Democratic pickups: Virginia, New Mexico, and Colorado.

The RNC line of credit is almost certain to be spent on a handful of vulnerable Republican incumbents who face varying levels of peril. That list includes North Carolina Sen. Elizabeth Dole, Oregon Sen. Gordon Smith, Minnesota Sen. Norm Coleman, Kentucky Sen. Mitch McConnell, Georgia Sen. Saxby Chambliss, Alaska Sen. Ted Stevens among others.

The decision by the RNC to help fund a series of Senate contest shows that national GOP strategists see the Senate as their firewall in next week's election.

Will it change things? It's very hard to know with so much volatility in the environment. But, it does show the RNC is willing to do everything it can to hold strong against the onrushing Democratic wave.

As a Democrat, I have mixed feeling about having Democrats control everything, but after all the bull $h it from Mitch McConnel, I am atleast ready to try.I can't believe that all republicans are obstructionist, but he seemed to carry the load. I am hoping, but won't hold my breath that this will change. There were some very moderate Republicans that are going down, and tha is disappointing, but that is the way it is. I hope the Dens can acually get things done this time for the good of the country.Congressmen/women jobs are to represent their constituents, more than the senators. So when McConnel said he brought money to the state, and they should reelect him for that reason only, I almost puked, him and that crook Ted Stevens.

John McCain has been acting erratically ever since he selected Palin for his running mate. When the economy failed his behavior became bizarre. Stresses on any president in the next few years are going to be extreme . They will be fatal for someone in McCain's health and mental state. When he steps down we will then inherit his Palin fiasco.

Now Colin Powell has recognized these facts and has endorsed Obama as being a cool-headed and logical leader who is more fit for the presidency.

Kipling said it best:

If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you,
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you
But make allowance for their doubting too,
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or being lied about, don't deal in lies,
Or being hated, don't give way to hating,
And yet don't look too good, nor talk too wise:

If you can dream--and not make dreams your master,
If you can think--and not make thoughts your aim;
If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
And treat those two impostors just the same;
If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,

If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
Or walk with Kings---nor lose the common touch,
If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you,
If all men count with you, but none too much:
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds' worth of distance run,
Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,
And---which is more---you'll be a Man, my son!

He was talking about men like Obama.

In the United States, wealth is highly concentrated in a relatively few hands. As of 2001, the top 1% of households (the upper class) owned 33.4% of all privately held wealth, and the next 19% (the managerial, professional, and small business stratum) had 51%, which means that just 20% of the people owned a remarkable 84%, leaving only 16% of the wealth for the bottom 80% (wage and salary workers). In terms of financial wealth, the top 1% of households had an even greater share: 39.7%. Table 1 and Figure 1 present further details drawn from the careful work of economist Edward N. Wolff at New York University (2004).

Obama's tax plan is to return to the progressive form of the Clinton administration which would target to the largest degree the 1 per cent at the top
with one third of the wealth in the country.

Small business owners making over 250 thousand in profit would see the smallest increase.
No more than they paid in the Clinton era which was without a doubt the most prosperous in recent history.

The benefits of this system would take the burden off the middle class which has only
16 per cent of the wealth in this country. The wage earners and salaried employees like Joe the plumber would get instant relief.

This will encourage them to spend more and stimulate the economy.

Response to ArchieHaase at 8:42am:

Its not just Obama's association with Wright, it's that Obama brought his children to a hate-filled Church.

AND he gave the hate Church $20,000.00.

There are many black Churches in Chicago which are not racist and do not promote hate - Obama could have joined one of those Churches, brought his children there and given that Church $20,000.00.

Yes That Make Obama a RACIST.

It also goes to Obama's judgement, which he lacks.

The Rs should not waste a dime on Sen. Stevens.

When Street Corner posts multiple copy-and-pastes with aggressive spacing to take up more bandwidth, or an advertisement for his own weblog, I request that everyone should report the abuse upon the second such post in a thread, and every time thereafter.

He should be permitted the first one, as we each would want one rant for ourselves.

Socialism? Is that all McCain's got left? Can someone PLEASE shout to him at his next rally:

"Hey old dude, it's 2008 - nobody under 45 even knows what that means"!

What's going on with his campaign? I mean it just reeks of obvious desperation.

Why is McCain STILL, 7 days before the election, trying to rally his base? Isn't that what Blunder Woman Palin is for?

Imagine how close this race could have been if the old, moderate, John McCain had popped up after the convention? Imagine the breaking of the tire swing rope as every journalist in sight would have jumped on in sheer exultory delight that the Mac-2000 was back. I want McCain to lose as bad as anyone, but it's almost getting painful, it's like watching a punch drunk fighter get mauled and the ref won't call it.

I wonder what the next McCain campaign stunt will be?

"Fact - The terrorist fist-bump is as distinctive as the MASONIC handshake, and even when OBAMA flaunts it, the Obama-bots shout down those who care for the TRUTH."

The hand gesture is an extremely common one among young people (particularly young black people) in America. Fail.

"Fact - OBAMA tramples on the Constitution and its principles of anti-wealth sharing, but his PROPONENTS would have you believe that he believes in the 2nd Amendments rights to BUY AND SELL guns, at whatever price."

Where does the Constitution forbid progressive taxation? And what does that have to do with the 2nd Amendment? Fail.

"Fact - OBAMA and his SHILLS do not have the support they TOUT, and that Republican turnout will carry the day."

Ignoring that early voter turnout has exploded and it is massively in favour of Democrats, that Obama has raised far more money, and generated far more enthusiasm. Fail.

More bad news for McCain from the Wall Street Journal...

Republicans are losing ground in the battle over taxes -- turf they have dominated since the Reagan administration -- even against a Democratic presidential candidate who is promising substantial tax increases.

Sen. John McCain has made tax policy the centerpiece of his homestretch pitch to voters: The Arizona Republican unveiled an ad Tuesday accusing Sen. Barack Obama of pitching "higher taxes" and planning to "spread your income," then hammered his Democratic rival's economic plan in Pennsylvania.

Yet the latest Wall Street Journal/NBC News poll, conducted in mid-October, showed voters preferred Sen. Obama to Sen. McCain on taxes by 14 percentage points. After Labor Day, Sen. McCain had a one-point edge on that issue.

"It's a stunning reversal of fortune on a core Republican strength," says Republican pollster Neil Newhouse, who helps conduct the poll.

It's looking like the Dems will end up with 59 seats (possibility of a sixtieth if we can get Georgia to a runoff; not *that* would be a sight to see; one month, no holds barred slugfest with the filibuster at stake), which, when Collins, Snowe, Gregg (who'll be accutely conscious of his vulnerability in 2010) etc. in the Senate, should make passing the necessary changes reasonably easy.

McCain is really pathetic. Palin is merely and irresponsibly uninformed about just about everything.

More hershey squirts for Zouk and 37th-and-the-gutter:

(CNN) — John McCain does not appear to be making up ground in Ohio, the key battleground state that is crucial to keeping his White House hopes alive.

According to CNN's latest poll of polls of the state, the Arizona senator now trails Obama by 6 points there, 50 percent to 44 percent. That gap is two points wider than it was Monday and double what it was one week ago.

Meanwhile, a new poll of polls in Florida shows a similar story. The Arizona senator trails McCain by 4 points there, 49 percent to 45 percent. That gap is 3 points higher than it was earlier today and is largely due to a newly released survey from LA Times/Bloomberg showing McCain down 7 points in the state. The Florida poll of polls also includes surveys from Suffolk University and Reuters/Zogby.

So much trash here!

- McCain isn't feeble: he's got more stamina than most people half his age.
- Obama isn't a rotten human being: you may disagree with his politics, but that doesn't make him rotten (nor does spinning his politics to an extreme).
- Palin isn't stupid (if not qualified to be president right away). She doesn't appear to be a deep thinker, but has talent and in four years could be a real force.

I mean, really. Oh, on topic:

- It's a longshot that the Democrats will reach 60, but they'll be close enough that not reaching cloture should help them tamp down from veering too far off course.

Actually I have answered that question like five times. If you have read anything I write you will see most all are original compositions with a reason and a point for being written. Even objective sometimes. Unlike your poses that consists almost entirely of cut and pasting emails that arrive in your box. I know you don't read what I write from this post I am responding to. But if you did you would know I work for the Obama campaign as a volunteer. I am a large financial contributer, live in Florida and own a manufacturing company. I am one of those who will get the tax raise but I don't really care, it is maybe for me the smallest issue. If nothing else I will be able to write off even more charitable contributions.

37thandO alley, the recent Pew poll (O up 15, up 19 among people who already voted) suggests that nobody, except the fools at Palin hate rallies or who believe anything on Drudge, cares about any of the following:

O's middle name, fistbumps, Resko, Ayers, Wright, emails from Scarlett Johnassen, non-existent whitey tapes, birth certificates, O's bowling score, how he got into Harvard, members of his church's choir, or any of the other sludge Mac has been peddling against O through Drudge and Faux News.

As the brilliant Eugene Robinson might put it, the market has already discounted that non-information in the polls. The existence or non-existence of a whitey tape has no bearing on the economy, global warming, our two wars, universal health care, or anything that thinking people care about.

Anyway, 37thandO alley, I hope you get to read this before 10pm lockdown.

This is incredible. Drudge's cherry-picked poll of the day from Gallup (showing O up 2) is one that Gallup itself admits is bogus. Gallup's expanded poll, its REAL poll, shows O up 7, which sounds about right.

PEW: O up 15.

The only poll that counts is the final poll: the vote. But if you have to use polls, Pew is the best. Pew was the only poll to get the Bush/Kerry race right on the nose, Bush by 3. Zogby, et al. were way off. And Pew is one of the few to call cellphone users. So what Pew has to say a week out is important:

Pew has O up by 15, up 19 among people who already voted.

See http://people-press.org/report/464/campaign-engagement

This is incredible. Drudge's cherry-picked poll of the day from Gallup (showing O up 2) is one that Gallup itself admits is bogus. Gallup's expanded poll, its REAL poll, shows O up 7, which sounds about right.

Hard to overestimate the importance of early voting. It is early voting that is increasing the turnout dramatically everywhere and which takes out of play the impact of Mac stunts like the recent racist hoax involving the Mac campaigner and the invented controversies of Drudge and Faux News.

If you are in one of the 36 states permitting early voting, like VA, VOTE NOW. That way if there is a glitch, like the trick voting machines in West Virginia or the trick ballots in NC, you have a chance to deal with any problem later that day or the next day.

Tomorrow -- O's half-hour televised message of hope. This is the long-awaited closing argument for the World, uninterrupted by commercials, fools, pundits with hidden agendas (e.g., Stephanopoulos, O'Reilly, Brokaw), smears, or insults.

Also, to be fair, Mac's untelevised appearance (scheduled, we think) at a one-room Dayton, OH diner in front of Maybelle, Enoch, Crazy Joe, Aunt Bee, Floyd, and Colonel John. The hash browns are good.

There is a great deal of diversity among the Dems in the House and it is reflected in their voting. Yes, they raised the minimum wage, but do you think they will be able to ban guns? No way in hell. This election is a National Election----Congressional and Senate races have become nationalized. That is, it is difficult for any Senator or Representative to be reelected by arguing that he has effectively brought Federal benefits to his state or district, or that he has adequately reflected the ideological views of his state or district. This election is about how poorly the state of the nation has been over the past 8 years---it is fundamentally a referendum on how Republicans have screwed things up over the past 8 years when they have controlled the White House and controlled Congress for six of those eight years. It is also a rejection of the politics of divisiveness which the Bush Administration used effectively to get reelected in 2004.

Therefore, Republican Senators are inevitably tied to the Bush policies, the failed Bush Presidency, the faltering economy, and the failure of the extreme lack of economic regulation Republicans have implemented over the past quarter-century.

The irony here is that while Republicans probably could have limited their losses by running to the middle as Senator Collins of Maine has done, they have instead, from McCain on down, largely embraced a move to the right. Many of the House Republicans most endangered are moderate or moderate/conservative Republicans. What will be left after this election is a Republican Party further to the political right than at anytime in modern history. It will be further regionalized in that an inordinate number of Republican Senators and House members will hail from the South, a region of the nation that is largely out of step with the rest of the nation.

This will make it all the more difficult for them to recover. If they were offering a more centrist agenda, they would have a better chance. The Republicans need to find a way to expunge the far-right elements and move to the center to have a chance nationally moving forward in the 21st century.

Despite all predictions, this election is not, in fact, about Bush. He's a non-entity in it all.

That's fairly remarkable. And against the odds, the McCain/Palin campaign has managed to suck entirely on its own. Sure, the Democrats wanted to paint McCain (accurately, when it comes to nearly all actual policy positions) as the second coming of Bush. But McCain resisted the label, and instead found ways to suck that were completely independent of his ties to Bush.

McCain: He's terrible at giving speeches, yes. His policies are dismal, and more to the point are badly elucidated -- when he's willing to talk about them at all. We know he's for the Iraq War: we don't know anything he intends to do differently, except do more of it and presume it'll all work out this time around. His choice of Palin for the number two spot was, from the standpoint of anyone not a hardcore conservative, bizarre, and smacked of the erratic, shoot-from-the-hip nature of decision making that his past detractors had warned of. His campaign managers have been vitriolic towards the press, and dismissive of the public, and as erratic as their own candidate. His vaunted surrogates have played a round-robin game of publicly humiliating themselves and their candidate (attaching himself to Phil Gramm, noted hellspawn of all that is economically manipulative and devastating, was an inspired touch.) And his behavior during this economic crisis -- making a show of tooling down to Washington to "solve" things, and having his party dissolve into chaos around him, and then rejoining his campaign with nothing "solved" at all, and things in fact much, much worse, and looking for all the world like a man who has just been pied in the face by circumstance -- has been a complete and very public fiasco. He has done his very best to manage to convince everyone that he is, in fact, not anything like presidential material. He's never looked less presidential.

Oh -- and his more impromptu surrogates, people like "Joe the Plumber" and "Tape #254 Of Sarah Palin Saying Something Crazy" and "Campaign Supporter Not Really Attacked At ATM" have added a burnt-popcorn, sideshow quality to the campaign. That hasn't helped.

So... congratulations to McCain, I guess. He managed to do the seemingly impossible -- be trailing in the election not because people were deathly tired of George W. Bush and didn't want anything to do with his party, but because people are deathly tired of John McCain, as well. And I think the award needs to be shared communally, because at all levels of the Republican Party, candidates seem to be going out of their way to make themselves similarly dislikable, out of touch, or (and this is the favorite approach) be ranting with such gusto about the incipient socialism if any of you poor cretins out there dare get better healthcare or a more stable economy that they seem, to be blunt, f---ing nuts.

Why is the RNC borrowing five million dollars? You mean they could not raise that money from their supporters? Perhaps they should have consulted Obama. At a decent rate I'm sure he would have been happy to loan them the money. seriously is this party so short of money that it has to borrow a measly (for them) five million? If so, this does not bode well for their future. Money still is and always will be, the mothers milk of politics.

Zouk is right, it seems. I have here a poll from 78 likely voters at alaskan-voters-in-the-tank-for-Palin.org showing the Palin ticket with a 20 point lead in Alaska. Looks like those 3 electoral votes are locked up.

567 folks voted at freeplaneridesforPalinfamily.net, and McCain is clinging to a 2 point lead there. Don't know which state they're polling, but it is surely a battleground that the MSM is ignoring.

1200+ at dinnertimeofthreethirty.edu pick McCain by ten. They must be chiming in from Florida. That one should be solid red.

Also, Colorado +8 and Nevada +10

and people are going out there and locking in their votes. More people have voted in NC in one week of early voting than have voted in all of 2004.

Voting day has already started. There are millions of people who have made up their minds permanently. And hundreds of thousands are going out there each day.

And the thing is, the Obama staffers are really acting like they're down. The last thing McCain could want is for the team winning by ten to act like they're losing by ten.

Obama doesn't want to just win. He wants a blowout. A big "fuuck you" to Bush and his successor.

Ladies and Germs!

I give you your 2008 Republican Party!
.

"This is what the Republican Party has done to us this year: It has placed within reach of the Oval Office a woman (Palin) who is a religious fanatic and a proud, boastful ignoramus. Those who despise science and learning are not anti-elitist. They are morally and intellectually slothful people who are secretly envious of the educated and the cultured. And those who prate of spiritual warfare and demons are not just "people of faith" but theocratic bullies. On Nov. 4, anyone who cares for the Constitution has a clear duty to repudiate this wickedness and stupidity."

In the category of shockingly good news, the Dow shot up a near record 10.8% today, apparently on news that Senator McCain has only a 3.3% chance of winning election, according to statistical analysis at the poll-tracking website fivethirtyeight.com. Financial analysts, known for their forward-thinking methods of pricing stocks, have finally bought into the idea that Senator Barack Obama is likely to be the next President of the United States, and have flooded the market with cash as a result.

If you can dream--and not make dreams your master,
If you can think--and not make thoughts your aim;
If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
And treat those two impostors just the same;
If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,

If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
Or walk with Kings---nor lose the common touch,
If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you,
If all men count with you, but none too much:
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds' worth of distance run,
Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,
And---which is more---you'll be a Man, my son!

He was talking about men like Obama.

A little insight into zouk's wet dream girl, Monica Crowley:

While filling in for Laura Ingraham on her radio program The Laura Ingraham Show on June 19th, Crowley used Obama's middle name to try and reignite rumours that he is a muslim saying:"I want to point this out, because nobody else has: Barack Hussein Obama -- given name. That was his given name. Throughout his teenage years, he went by the name 'Barry.' He went by the name of 'Barry' until he got to college and found himself, and then he switched back to Barack Hussein Obama." She went on to say, "Now, here is the point: African-Americans in particular in the United States when they convert to Islam, most of the time, they will change their name or at least take a Muslim name.. ... [T]he explicit point of that is to signal to everybody that they are, in fact, now a Muslim -- hence the name. ... They are signaling to the world that they have converted to Islam and they are a Muslim." She then asked, "[this] raises the question: What is he signaling with that name? What does he want you to know?".

On June 23, 2008, Crowley was named by Keith Olbermann on his television show, Countdown with Keith Olbermann as the "worst person in the world" for referring to a false quote in the Jerusalem Post incorrectly attributed to Barack Obama's half-brother Malik that suggested that Senator Obama had a Muslim background. In fact, Malik Obama was quoted as saying, "I don’t think that my being a Muslim has got anything to do with my brother being president of the United States."[7]

During that same broadcast, Monica Crowley also described Obama as a "Black Panther", and made disparaging remarks about Obama's ethnicity saying "according to this guy Kenneth Lamb, Barack Obama is not black African, he is Arab African"

She makes white trash look positively pristine.

The two percentage point margin for Obama over McCain in today's traditional likely voters result, based on Gallup Poll Daily tracking from Oct. 25-27, is not the first time the race has been this close; it matches the two-point Obama margin that held for three straight reporting periods spanning Oct. 13 -17, a week and a half ago. The traditional model assumes that turnout will follow the patterns of past elections, in which both current interest in the election and past voting behavior are predictors of actual voting.

In his latest move to try to have it both ways, Senator McCain tried to appeal to baseball fans who might be upset at a slight delay to the start of tomorrow's world series game. The Wa Post reports:

" 'No one will delay the World Series with an infomercial when I'm president,' he said to the approval of a crowd of thousands at a stadium here. "

But the post also notes that the McCain campaign does not hold all sports fans in the same high esteem:

"In fact, McCain's own convention speech this summer forced a change in the start time of the NFL's season opener, which started an hour and a half earlier to accommodate McCain's speech."

Boo-yeah! Nevermind what I said yesterday, its what I say today that's important!

But why spend money on Stevens? If the conviction stands, won't he have to resign? Are they just trying to hold on to the seat in the hopes that either 1) he'll win the appeal or 2) Govorner Palin will be able to appoint his replacement when he's forced to step down?

Ah yes, the legendary "tough questions" from the local ABC affiliate in Florida. The one where she quotes Karl Marx and gets the context of the quote wrong. Marx wasn't referring to redistributing wealth, but rather saying that each person's profession should match what they do best. Yes, those were "tough" questions alright. And Joe couldn't handle them could he? No, he just stayed calm and repeated all the campaign talking points and shot down each one in turn while questioning the integrity of the mental giant who wrote those questions.

Yes, to anyone who has ever read Karl Marx in an introductory political thought class, that was quite the display.

I offer the Obama campaign two responses to Joe Biden's recent statement that tax cuts should go to "middle class people — people making under $150,000 a year," contradicting recent Obama pledges to only raise taxes on those making more than $250,000 per year and to lower taxes for those making less than $200,00 per year.

Response One: "Our definition of rich is indeed elastic, and Joe the Plumber was correct when he said, 'I mean, you know, 250 thousand dollars now — what if he decides well, you know, '150 thousand dollars, you’re pretty rich too, let’s go ahead and lower it again'."

Response Two: "Joe Biden experiences frequent hallucinations and very little of what he says ever corresponds to reality. Everything he said should be ignored, and we pledge that he will be kept in an undisclosed location away from microphones in an Obama administration."

Let's get this straight: Biden couldn't face down some tough questions from a local news reporter, but we're supposed to believe he'd be comfortable facing down Iran, Russia, and North Korea? And Biden is supposed to be the one on his ticket who's tough on foreign policy.

More importantly, this episode points to a very troubling pattern. Whenever confronted by difficult questions posed by people who haven't succumbed to the creepy Obama Hypnosis, the Obama Team’s reaction is to silence them. They did it to a Chicago radio station that dared to interview someone critical of Obama's past. They did it to Joe the Plumber, seeking to destroy him for daring to ask Obama a question about taxes. They are threatening to do it nationwide with the Fairness Doctrine.

You aren't allowed to raise Obama's middle name, Hussein. You aren't allowed to say that half of his family is Muslim. You aren't allowed to say that he was born to a Muslim father, which, under Islam, automatically made him a Muslim. You aren't allowed to discuss Reverend Wright. Or Bill Ayers. Or Bernardine Dohrn. Or Louis Farrakhan. Or Father Phleger. Or Tony Rezko. You aren't allowed to point out that so far, the Iranians, the Russians, the Syrians, Hamas, parts of al Qaeda, Hugo Chavez, the Castro brothers, and Kim Jong Il have endorsed him. You aren't allowed to ask him about the vote fraud or illegal campaign contributions being done in his name. You aren't allowed to say he's lying about his tax plan. Or about his past associations. Or his past, period.

If you raise any of these issues, you risk being punished, smeared, and silenced.

If this is the chill that has set in already, just imagine what it will be like once they take the White House.

Watch what you say. Or else.

And now, a message from our Dear Leader...

Well, they only needed to borrow four million, eight hundred and fifty thousand - if they didn't shop for Sarah Palin's Rapture-ready wardrobe.

all that effort and money and still no sale. a 2 point advantage. Wait untill you see that level of effectiveness applied to your dissappearing tax dollars.

LOL. Ah, poor Zouky. Clinging to his mythical 2 points like McCain with his lucky charms.

Obama ahead by 11 in New Hampshire today.

And McCain holds just a 1 point lead in GEORGIA.

Wait..what about your precious Ohio?

Obama by...4? Yessir!

Poor zouky.

"Perhaps the precise number is a fools errand, but the trend is valid. and messiah's trend is decidedly downward."

Zouk, above, is referencing one tracking poll of the national vote. Of course, as we all know, the President is not elected by the national vote.

A more useful exercise is to look at the trends on a state by state basis & examine where electoral votes are likely to be won by each candidate. Poll-tracking website electoral-vote.com has exactly this kind of data, which is summarized by the top two graphs at the following page:

http://electoral-vote.com/evp2008/Pres/ec_graph-2008.html

Personally, I like those trends; but be forewarned: they aren't very friendly towards the red candidate.

Pew Research:

"Barack Obama leads John McCain by a 52% to 36% margin in Pew’s latest nationwide survey of 1,325 registered voters. This is the fourth consecutive survey that has found support for the Republican candidate edging down....

Just as ominous for the Republican candidate, Obama holds a 53% to 34% lead among the sizable minority of voters (15%) who say they have already voted. Among those who plan to vote early but have not yet voted (16% of voters), 56% support Obama, while 37% support McCain."

Zogby's comments, today:

The race for President has seen ebbs and flows for the candidates, but it remains remarkably stable down the stretch. Compared to their numbers at the beginning of the daily tracking poll three weeks ago, Obama has increased his support by 1.3 points, while McCain’s support has decreased by 0.6 points.

Among those voters who have already cast ballots, Obama continues to lead – today by 18 points, while Obama and McCain are dead–even among those who are likely to vote but who have not yet cast their ballots.

Rasmussen comments, today:

Battleground state polls released yesterday showed Obama leading in Colorado, Florida, Ohio, and Virginia. With these latest results, Rasmussen Reports has moved Florida from “Toss-Up” to “Leans Democratic.”

Nationally, Obama has now been ahead by four-to-eight points every single day for 33 straight days. During that 33-day stretch, Obama’s voter support has stayed between 50% and 52% every day while McCain has stayed in the 44% to 46% range (see trends).

Gallup comments, today:

By a 71% to 23% margin, Americans expect that Barack Obama will be elected president in next Tuesday's election, including a 49% to 46% ratio of John McCain's own supporters who say Obama, rather than their own candidate, will win.

Gallup Poll Daily tracking from Friday through Sunday finds Barack Obama with a five percentage point lead over John McCain, 50% to 45%, in the presidential preferences of likely voters using Gallup's traditional model. He enjoys a more ample 10-point lead, 53% to 43%, using Gallup's expanded model.

I dont want a "game show" hostess as VP...

With all of the lies from the Palin/McCaint ticket...

I wonder if they even can fully understand the problem that they have created with this person as a VP Choice....

With the McCaint Campaign and their "spin" on this choice is so sadly moronic that the RNC/GOP card holders want to "dress her up" in a wardrobe that exceeds more than what middle class Americans can make in 3 years...on womens clothes...

The "elitism" of Obama who was shown in a Time magazine picture of his shoes worn, yet mcCaint has 500 dollar shoes...

If they wanted peeeuuu Palin to be more like "small town" America why did they not allow her to continue to buy fashions from Walmart...what are they saying that "small town" clothing is for "rubes"...

This country is in such a mess from Bush2 the only place Americans COULD go is Walmart, at least WE could afford their prices

Putting peeeuuu Palin in Michael Jacksons 20 year old jacket from "Thriller" and peeeuuu Palin "explaining" what the VP does was so pathetic and laughable..that more people need to see it...and see for themselves what an idiot she truly is..

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_H1hKaHDSvg&feature=user

..Instead of spending 150,000 dollars on clothing, hiring a make up artist at 24,500 a month....

They should have hired a "fragrance consultant"..because their pathetic and laughable campaign...... stinks.....really badly

And for ALL of the lies from peeeuuu Palin go to......

I think the GOP is chasing it's tail, which is what happens when a party is about to get spanked at the voting booth. They're simply playing chase the Dems, which is never a good place to be. And why are they doing ad buys for Stevens following his conviction? What's up with that?

People can cherry pick any polls they want, but at this stage, most voters have made up their minds and are ready to vote. Polls don't count, just votes.

To get you geared up, think about what you would do as president. Not what McCain or Obama might do, but what you would do. I put up a cool video from the "If I Were President" campaign at my site (http://current.pic.tv/2008/10/28/if-i-were-president-get-your-voice-in-the-ballot-box/). Go back to talking about ACORN. Oh yeah, find me evidence of ONE illegal vote that was cast as a result of their actions.

I appreciate Chris' insights and research. I've voted early for Obama. Frankly, this column strikes me as off base. The election is not over by any means. If the Obama ground game really executes as planned, he should win - but still may not.
In any event, if the Republicans know they're in trouble in Congress, one would think they'd redouble their effort for McCain. So, respectfully, Chris - this just doesn't add up.

king_of_zouk...you are making too much of the Daily Tracking Polls (Gallup and Zogby).

Trying to statistically predict human behavior of about 150 million people based on a sampling of 700 people is plain stupid.

At best you can poll at the state level and local district level to gauge the general level of interest (i.e. lean Obama or lean McCain). None of this +or - 2 to 4 points CRAP!

Regardless, Presidential elections are won per each state's results. If you look at the state polling, Obama maintains a sizable lead in swing states that voted Republican in 2004. Obama is playing offense while McCain is on the defense.

It's not over until the votes have been counted (or not). The best bet for the Republican party is to play defense and try to minimize their losses. Not all of the GOP senate seats will be lost and preventing the "Magic 60" should be their top priority. It does reek of desperation to take out 5 mil in credit this late in the game, but I suppose you need to use all available resources when you are in a dogfight.

One week ago, the Zogby tracking poll had Barack Obama beating John McCain by almost 10 points among likely voters. Today, it’s a four-point game. Yesterday, IBD reported, “After seesawing between 3.2 and 3.9 points over the weekend, Obama’s lead slipped to 2.8[.]” Gallup’s newest traditional poll has Obama leading by two points. Probing coverage of Sarah Palin’s wardrobe didn’t seem to do what the mainstream media had hoped. With the public losing interest in the crusade against Palin, a fresh news cycle has ushered in a serious challenge for Barack Obama. Americans are scared that the Democratic nominee is a socialist. And it’s not attack ads or robocalls that have created this impression, but Obama’s own words. Up until now, Obama has enjoyed a twenty-six-point lead among self-professed moderates, who make up roughly half the electorate. As there is nothing moderate about collectivism and wealth redistribution, the new charges could bury Obama.

Darn truth keeps trying to sneak out. how can Libs win if that happens? MSM, cover for them.

Down to two points. slipping, slipping.
