Romney and Giuliani: Surely You Jest

Former Gov. Mitt Romney (Mass.) and former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani have done this debate thing before and it shows.

After a decidedly serious answer from Thompson about the possibility of a recession, Romney found a way to work one of his now trademark zingers (corny yet effective) into his own answer. He castigated Gov. Jennifer Granholm (D-Mich.) for her approach to taxes, joking that he worried she might put a "tax on the debate before we got finished."

Giuliani was up next. Asked about making predictions about the economy, Giuliani referenced his relatively poor record as a baseball prognosticator (his beloved Yankees were eliminated from the playoffs last night). Titters from the crowd, though not the roar that Romney enjoyed. Giuliani followed up with a vote of confidence in Yankee manager Joe Torre calling him "the best manager in the history of the Yankees at least in the modern era."
