Sunday Talker: Tracing an E-Mail Smear

On Sundays, The Fix tries to catch up with all the reading that got neglected during the week. And, more often than not, we come across something in our own newspaper that's worth highlighting for Fixistas.

Last week we noted the column by David Broder that raised questions about Barack Obama's position-switching and wondered what effect it would have on the general election.

This week's story appeared in Saturday's paper and was written by Matt Mosk. The story sought to trace a common e-mail smear of Obama -- that he is a secret Muslim -- to its roots.

It's not the first time a reporter has embarked on such a mission to find out where these e-mails originate -- Ben Smith and Jonathan "JMart" Martin did so last October and Ben noted that Chris Hayes of the Nation was on the scent even before that -- but Mosk's piece is, nonetheless, a fascinating journey into the nefarious origins of an electronic attack.

At the center of Mosk's story are two people: Danielle Allen, a political theorist working out of the Institute for Advanced Study and Andy Martin, an Internet newspaper publisher whom Allen pegged as the originator of the ideas in the e-mail.

Of Martin, Mosk writes:

"He said in an interview that he first began questioning Obama's religious background after hearing his famous keynote speech at the 2004 Democratic National Convention. In an Aug. 10, 2004, article, which he posted on Web sites and e-mailed to bloggers, he said that Obama had concealed his Muslim heritage. 'I feel sad having to expose Barack Obama,' Martin wrote in an accompanying press release, 'but the man is a complete fraud. The truth is going to surprise, and disappoint, and outrage many people who were drawn to him. He has lied to the American people, and he has sought to misrepresent his own heritage.' Martin's article did not suggest an association between Obama and radical Islam."

Martin, for his part, tells Mosk that he had nothing to do with the chain e-mail that made it into Allen's inbox last winter. "I'm not trying to smear anybody," Martin said. "I just felt that was an underreported story."

The power of technology has made efforts to smear candidates both incredibly simple and easily spreadable -- forcing those who combat them to move far more quickly just to keep up. (Witness Obama's "Fight the Smears" website as evidence.)

"The idea of unsubstantiated charges whispered through gossip trails has been a tried-and-true political technique since well before Machiavelli's time, Allen said," writes Mosk. Later, he adds: "That was easier when the rumors flew off a printing press, or when they appeared -- as with Swift boat attacks against Kerry -- in television ads paid for by a well-funded group of partisans. The attacks on Obama are different, Allen says. The level of anonymity, the technical efficiency, and above all the electoral impact of Internet-based smears all represent a new challenge."

It is this "level of anonymity" and "technical efficiency" that should rightly frighten any candidate and his (or her) supporters in the electronic age. The onus is now on campaigns to find ways to fight back quick and hard.

"Adviser earned reputation as a stern task master adept at managing all the moving parts"???

There ARE no moving parts.

Posted by: wardropper | July 2, 2008 5:45 PM | Report abuse

I just wanted to inform you of a political movement that continues to catch on, particularly within the military ranks. The Modern Whig Party currently has about 6,000 members, the majority of whom are affiliated with the military. This is a moderate organization that cherry picks between traditionally GOP issues and Dem issues. A major grassroots campaign continues to grow in many states. The group is using its status with the military as an avenue for mainstream credibility and I believe it can do what Unity08 failed to do because this group is moving very deliberately and gradually so as not to become marginalized later on. A recent email also was sent to the membership relating to novel, realistic and bold tactics/strategy to take the group to the next level without being deluded or self-important. It also has an executive committee based in Washington, DC. A recent Army Times article also did a large feature on the organization and how it is starting to catch on and also how the Pentagon is monitoring its growth. The Web site is http://www.modernwhig.org. Thanks for hearing me out.

Andy Martin has been bragging on his blog since January 2007 about being the source of this 'information' he brought to light in 2004:
http://tfsmith.politicalgateway.com/main/columns/read.html?col=715

Debbie Schlussel and Daniel Pipes have been taking turns trying to resusitate the story since then as something 'new'. Read this, which was in Wikipedia before it was deleted as not being 'encyclopedic' (which may well be true, but it's still interesting stuff to know):

As a previous individual stated, it is mind-boggling that so many stupid people can type (lots of misspellings also) and also that these stupid people believe anything stated by similarly stupid people. Where do they get their "information" other than from other stupid people.

The source of the Obama Muslim smear is no mystery.
It's still posted on hillaryclinton.com.

So I am sitting beside my 70 year-old father, who in the final stages of cancer has stopped taking nutrition. "Dad," I asked,"would you like anything in your memorial service to reflect your Jewishness?" Peering from his grizzled visage, he responded, "What ARE you talking about?!" I went on, "Well your mother was adopted in 1908, and we know that her biological mother was Jewish. Under Jewish law, that made Grammie Jewish, and through her, you would be considered Jewish." With a wan smile and a dry chuckle, he responded, "Fine time to find out I'm Jewish, at least in some folks' eyes. But I think nearly seven decades in the bosom of the Bridgewater Free Baptist Church should settle where I found faith...not that I'm in a position just now to decline support from any quarter."

I'd say Obama is about as Muslim as my father was Jewish.

This is not quite on topic, but very worrisome. The pro-Hillary pumapac website has a photo of Obama and along it a picture of a vicious growling dog. This is scary. Is there anything we can do? Does this need to be tracked down to an individual or was it Will Bower?

I would have to agree. There is something wrong with Bill Richardson. He did not even get the Hispanic vote. Is that not odd. And yes, many Hispanics do call him a sell-out but are they reffering to what Chaos45i is talking about. At least there seems to be enough information to look deeper into Obama's part in all this Hispanic discrimination.

Posted by: Brad | June 30, 2008 2:49 PM | Report abuse

Angel if Chaos45i's report were true would the Hispanic Bill Richardson be endorsing him? Sometimes people need to think when they get information.

Posted by: GC4Life | June 30, 2008 9:12 AM

Bill Richardson was paid in some trade for his endorsement. Hispanics call him a sell-out for a reason.

I hope that all these revelations about John McCain and his wife are reported on by the media. After all, they did appear on the Washington Post website, which as one of the premier outlets of journalism in this country must mean that they are 100% true.

And, after all, it looks like many people are talking about all these fascinating, under-reported facts about John McCain and his wife. Come on, mainstreram journalists. Tell us if it's true that John McCain is a brainwashed commie warlock who eats Mexicans and has homosexual orgies and that his wife is an alien from outer space.

Or at least report on the controversy, just like you do with that Muslim radical African homosexual Barack Obama!

Posted by: Laverne | June 30, 2008 2:11 PM | Report abuse

I ground up me dad's bones and smoked them in me bong with John McCain and his alien lizard wife.

Posted by: Keith Richards | June 30, 2008 2:05 PM | Report abuse

McCain's birth certificate is forged. He wasn't really born in Panama in 1936. He was really born in Nazi Germany in 1932. He is the love child of Adolf Hitler and Mae West. They decided the safest place to bring him up was with an American naval officer in various foreign places like Panama and Washington, DC.

I read about it on a blog so it must be true!

Posted by: Jeri | June 30, 2008 2:04 PM | Report abuse

My hairdresser tells me John McCain and Charlie Crist and Lindsey Graham get together and have hot three-way homosexual gay sex. He would know! They like to tie McCain up and make him rat on his buddies, just like he did in Hanoi.

ALL CONTROLLED BY JANE FONDA? Who ARE you people??? Man, this is one weird blog.

Posted by: sheridan1 | June 30, 2008 1:54 PM | Report abuse

Gus, why no mention of the fact that McCain is a robot controlled from afar by the Vietnamese? How can he be an evil warlock when the gooks stole his soul 40 years ago in Hanoi?

You're just part of the conspiracy to cover up The Truth About McCain: He's a Walking, Talking Autonomaton Controlled By The Viet Commies. Haven't you seen the Manchurain Candidate? It's secretly a warning to us by the few remaining loyal Americans in Hollywood.

Posted by: Hank R. | June 30, 2008 1:51 PM | Report abuse

Senator McCain is running on his experience, saying it makes him ready to lead right away. By doing so, he is asking people to look at what that experience taught him. By looking at Senator McCain's positions and votes (or lack of them), it seems that experience has not given him the right judgment on important issues of our time. And, while we should all honor Senator McCain's service, that doesn't mean we should necessarily honor it by putting him in the White House to take up George W. Bush's third term.

So, General Clark is 100 percent absolutely right, and he should not back down. I'd hope that some of the so-called progressives on television back him up on this, and not get intimidated by the media and McCain campaign press releases. These are important times, and deserve a blunt and honest debate.

In some circles, that's just called 'straight talk.'

Posted by: crazyme | June 30, 2008 1:51 PM | Report abuse

Edward F. and Francine, you're missing the bigger picture. It turns out the Chinese Communists and Mexicans are in cahoots with the UN, which as we all know is controlled by Jane Fonda. They have dug a secret tunnel from Mexico to the McCain ranch in Sedona, which, as someone else pointed out, is the Witchcraft Capital of the World.

There in Sedona, John McCain, an evil Warlock in service to Satan, along with his wife, whose spaceship McCain regularly rides in direct violation of FEC rules, welcomes the Chinese Communists and illegal alien Mexicans, and has sex orgies which result in an untold multitude of black babies fathered by McCain. These black babies, indoctrinated into World Socialism by the UN and by the McCains, are then sent out to the world to force us to listen to Satanic heavy metal music, worship global warming, and engage in various and sundry perversions with farm animals.

It's all true. I got an email about it last week.

You're wrong, Edward F. John McCain supports unlimited illegal immigration because many of those "Mexicans" streaming across the border are actually Chinese Communists who have been altered to look Hispanic.

These "Mexicans" constitute a vast network of sleeper cells which when activated will form many combat brigades, and then swarm into our cities and suburbs and enslave Americans and force us to speak Chinese and work for 10 cents an hour sewing Nike shoes.

Those are all good points, Albert, Beverly, Chad, and Doris, but I think you're missing the bigger point:

John McCain supports unlimited Hispanic immigration because he has a big ranch where he catches Hispanics crossing the border and he and the lizard wife then kill them, grill them, and serve them to the many reporters he has over every weekend. The more Hispanics cross the border, the more he can then grill and eat!

The only reason we don't hear about this in the media is that the reporters find the Hispanics to be very succulent and tasty.

What's interesting too is that John and Cindy McCain (the brainwashed one and his lizard alien master) have a house in Sedona, Arizona. You know what else Sedona is famous for? WITCHCRAFT! It's the center of the American Witchcraft Movement. What Philly is to hoagies and Tennessee is to country music, Sedona is to WITCHCRAFT.

I think we have a right to know: how long have the brainwashed old guy and his reptile from outer space wife been practicing WITCHCRAFT?

Not only that, Beverly, but John McCain never goes to church. Hasn't been in years! Is he afraid of God? Does Jesus hate his guts for being a soul-less brainwashed Viet Cong dupe?

He had a regular American wife, but they made him divorce her immediately when he got back from his brainwashing in Vietnam because he might talk in his sleep about their plans to destroy America and that would have ruined everything!

Posted by: Chad | June 30, 2008 12:05 PM | Report abuse

That's right, Albert! I've heard McCain has a secret black baby too. What's he hiding hmmmm? Was his black girlfriend given to him by his friends in communist Vietnam? How many other girlfriends does he have? Boyfriends?

America demands answers now! How many secret babies and girlfriends and boyfriends does John McCain have?!? What is the media hiding!!!

Posted by: Beverly | June 30, 2008 12:01 PM | Report abuse

The comment at 11:50 am is right on! McCain was brainwashed by the Vietnamese! Have you ever noticed how he eats with chopsticks! Like he was born that way!!

Posted by: Albert | June 30, 2008 11:57 AM | Report abuse

John McCain is a brainwashed commie Manchurian Candidate dupe, with a trigger set deep in his cranium that when activated will compel him to destroy America and the American people, as the final vengeance of Ho Chi Minh against Uncle Sam.

His wife is a lizard alien from outer space. Look deep into her eyes and you'll know what I'm talking about. She is her husband's secret control agent. In fact, she probably has Ho Chi Minh's soul sucked into her internal, alien lizard circuitry.

Prove me wrong about either true fact. Bet you can't.

Are you out there looking for trash talk about John McCain and trying to clarify falsehoods being stated about him? You don't even cover him. Your bias is really quite evident. There are many supposedly progressive "Democratic" websites spreading inuendos about John McCain's POW experience but are you trying to defend him against smears. Buzzflash is even writing articles about McCain's first wife and their divorce and painting him as a villian in that marriage breakup. I am sure they really have crossed all the t's and dotted all the i's to know that what they are saying is the absolute truth. They were even commenting about his current wife Cindy's horrible go it alone life. Do they really have any evidence that she feels badly and has a miserable life with him. They are in the midst of doing their own swiftboating which they found so abominable when it was done to Kerry. They aren't so indignant about smear campaigns when they are the ones initiating them and apparently you are not very upset by them either. Why are you not balancing the coverage. Media bias plain and simple.

"There's more than a little irony when The Fix speaks about tracing smears at this time when a formerly functioning registration system gave some semblance of accountability by those who authored comments to this blog. Now for whatever reason -- presumably commercial -- The Fix offers anonymity for the cowards who choose to turn this former bastion of high political discourse and IQ into an open sewer of the crudest forms of political expression and raw prejudice masquerading as free speech. Fortunately, the conversation continues respectfully elsewhere.

The truth is this: the Obama campaign is lying.

The Obama campaign is pretending this is a smear.

1) There is a Catholic school in Indonesia which lists all its students and identifies each by his religion - Obama attended this school as a child - this Catholic school in its records lists Obama as a Muslim

2) Obama attended a different school while in Indonesia as well. This was a Muslim school, a madrasssa. The Obama campaign on its smears websites states that Obama did not go to a "radical Muslim school." However the Obama campaign does not ADMIT that Obama went to a "regular Muslim school." Does this sound clintonesque or what?

3) Obama has a half brother, who you may not have heard about too much for reasons which will become obvious during your reading of this posting. Obama's half brother has made public statements stating that Obama is a Muslim.

OK so those are the facts.

You know, dragnet, the facts, just the facts.

Andy Martin creates a firestorm over mainstream media efforts to conceal Barack Obama's religious roots

AMERICA'S #1 POLITICAL
BLOG ON THE 2008 CAMPAIGN

AUTHOR ANDY MARTIN'S COLUMNS TRIGGER EMBARRASSMENT FOR WASHINGTON POST AND MAELSTROM OF RIGHT/LEFT CRITICISM

MARTIN'S NEW BOOK IS AT THE PRINTER AND WILL BE ON SALE NATIONALLY WITHIN DAYS.

"TIMING IS EVERYTHING," SAYS ANDY

(NEW YORK)(June 30, 2008) By the looks of it, we have created a firestorm across the Internet, and across the presidential campaign. What is a little amazing is that this mountain of controversy comes just as my new book "Obama: The Man Behind The Mask" goes on sale nationally. Timing is everything.

And, since people who have no particular desire to help sales of my book generate all of the publicity, it all leaves you believing in divine intervention. Nevertheless, "Obama: The Man Behind the Mask," already a bestseller, is now headed for blockbuster status.

What explains all of this continuing conflict over Senator Barack Obama's religious beliefs? There are a number of factors.

First, the liberal mainstream media establishment insists on blatantly deceiving readers and viewers. Matthew Mosk of the Washington Post wrote an article about my columns, but he put the picture of someone else, Danielle Allen, on the story. Mosk neglected to tell his readers that Allen was an Obama contributor who had been an Obama defender in print media for years; in all likelihood an Obama campaign operative. Readers were deceived into believing Mosk's fairy tale that Allen "woke up one morning" and decided to take up a spear for Obama. Mosk's basic story line was a blatant sham.

Once the Internet focused on the Post's reporting, Allen was humiliated, Mosk was disgraced, and the Post's reputation for fairness and balance was in tatters. Mosk's article boomeranged on the Obama campaign.

The only one left standing with an intact reputation was me.

Second, despite Obama's lies, he grew up in a Muslim family. I am not going to hyperlink every story that confirms that fact. It is a fact. It is useless and counterproductive for Obama to deny that fact. Why does he persist in lying? About his childhood, for God's sake? Obama is clearly in deep denial about his convoluted upbringing, unstable mother, scandalous father and hapless stepfather.

Third, childhood religious experiences matter. They matter a great deal. Obama admitted to a New York Times reporter in 2007 that Obama could still recite Muslin prayers in flawless Arabic. That learning did not come by accident or overnight. It came through relentless drilling in the Arabic language. (Whether we call it rote memorization or repetition, the effect is the same; the Islamic prayers were drilled into his brain. Just ask a Roman Catholic friend about similar "drilling.") I have also quoted the old Jesuit saw that says "If we have a boy until he is seven years old, we have him for life." The Muslim religion had Obama in various forms until he was around ten.

Important note: when Obama moved in with his grandparents, they made no effort to displace his Muslim heritage because they had no religious beliefs of their own to substitute. Since children don't begin to develop reasoning powers until eight or nine, Obama's Muslim roots remained by default.

Fourth, journalistic integrity matters. When I first began writing about Obama's religious roots, conservatives were suspicious. I have differences of opinion with some conservatives on U. S. Middle East policy. "How," conservatives asked, "could someone such as Andy Martin, who is sympathetic to the Muslim point of view, be 'exposing' Barack Obama?" The reason I could write about Obama with a clear conscience is that I owe my only loyalty to the truth, and through the truth to my readers and listeners.

Yes, I do have sympathies, and I am honest and open about them. But I never let my personal views interfere with the facts. Although no one will ever thank me for it, I have probably screened out more anti-Obama trash than anyone else. If there is no truth behind the facts, I won't get behind the story.

So, where do we stand on the eve of publication of my blockbuster book?

The book has large amounts of new commentary that have never appeared anywhere. Regular readers of my columns will want to obtain a copy to see how I analyze old issues and look to the future. There is also an anthology of collected columns to show how I kept digging relentlessly for the truth about Obama. The book is designed to be readable and accessible, a take-it-to-the beach-and-enjoy volume. I write for Hillary Clinton Democrats (those of media myth anyway) as well as country club Republicans. As we say in my own church, the Episcopal Church, "All are Welcome," to buy a copy of the book.

Second, the Washington Post's ombudsman Deborah Howell will face a firestorm when she returns. She is apparently on vacation. The Post handled the Andy Martin/Danielle Allen story very, very badly. Readers were at least misled and possibly deceived. Matt Mosk has egg on his face. (Interestingly, Mosk treated me fairly and accurately, so I have no personal beef with the WP.)

Third, Barack Obama's "Fightthesmears.com" shenanigans have exploded in his face. Again.

Fourth, I have become the conservative poster boy for self-identified "hard left" media loonies such as Christopher Hayes of "The Nation" and Ben Smith of Politico.com. They will stop at nothing to smear me with lies, damn lies and more lies. In fact, in order to placate the "hard left," I have had to invent the fantasy of ContrarianCommentary.com's massive underground command and control bunker in Midtown Manhattan, where I manipulate coverage of the 2008 presidential election. Keith Olbermann has a standing invitation to visit. I only ask that Mr. Hayes and the others who have made me a poster boy keep it clean. No Page Six stuff, Keith.

Finally, ContrarianCommentary.com and its related blogs remain America's #1 political blog on the 2008 presidential race because we are independent, impartial and honest. That is a lot more than I can say for Barack Obama and his sycophants in the mainstream media. You keep reading and I'll keep writing. As Sergeant Joe Friday would always intone, "Just the facts, ma'am."

Buy the book and take it to the beach. Whether you are a Republican, Democrat or Independent you can count on my facts and opinions to get your blood flowing. After forty years observing the sewers and cesspools of Illinois politics, I know Barack Obama. And he is Barack Obama. He's no John Kennedy. A tip of the hat to former Senator Lloyd Bentsen for that thought.

Obama E-Mail Timeline
2004
August 10: Andy Martin -- a former political opponent of Obama and now the publisher of an internet newspaper -- posts an article saying that Obama has concealed his Muslim heritage. Martin says that under Islamic law Obama became a Muslim at birth due to his father's religion.
2006
December 29: Ted Sampley, a former U.S. Army Green Beret and conservative political activist, publishes an article titled "Obama, Who is He?" The article quotes Martin, as well as others, who say Obama is a Muslim.
December 29: A first version of the "Who Is Barack Obama?" email is captured by Snopes.com, a Web site dedicated investigating rumors and myths that spread via the Internet.
2007
January 2: Andrew Walden, the founder of an alternative Hawaiian newspaper, publishes an article with many of the same biographical details from the email, such as that Obama was "raised in Muslim lands and educated in Muslim schools."
January 8: A FreeRepublic.com reader using the name "Cedar" posts a version of the email, which associates Obama with radical Islam. His post garners only 13 replies.
January 15: Different versions of the email are posted on an "Urban Legends" page on About.com.
January 16: Three versions of the email show up on FreeRepublic.com, including the version that was earlier posted on the Web site Snopes.com.
January 17: Insight, a conservative Web magazine owned by the Unification Church, publishes a story that alleges the Clinton campaign is asking questions about Obama's background:
"Are the American people ready for an elected president who was educated in a Madrassa as a young boy and has not been forthcoming about his Muslim heritage? This is the question Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton's camp is asking about Sen. Barack Obama."
January 19: The Fox television network's morning program, "Fox & Friends" broadcasts a report based on the Insight story.
January 23: CNN runs a report refuting the Insight story. The network states that the school Obama attended in Indonesia was not a madrassa.
January 30: FreeRepublic.com reader FrouFrou posts the Ted Sampley article "Obama: Who Is He?"
February 10: Obama announces he will run for president.
August: CBS News asks voters in a poll what they think Obama's religion is. Seven percent think he is Protestant, 7 percent say Muslim, and 84 percent don't know or don't answer.
Mid-November: The Obama campaign posts a dossier on its Web site titled "Obama Has Never Been A Muslim, And Is a Committed Christian." It includes testimonials from religious leaders vouching for Obama's faith.
December 5: Sen. Hillary Clinton's campaign acknowledges an Iowa volunteer forwarded a version of the email. "This was wholly unauthorized, and we were totally unaware of it," Patti Solis Doyle, Clinton's campaign manager, tells The New York Times. "Let me be clear: No one should be engaging in this."
2008
January 15: Obama confronts the issue during Las Vegas debate:
"Let's make clear what the facts are: I am a Christian. I have been sworn in with a Bible. I pledge allegiance [to the American flag] and lead the pledge of allegiance sometimes in the United States Senate when I'm presiding."
March: An NBC News-Wall Street Journal poll asks:
Do you know what Barack Obama's religion is?
Of those who know, 37 percent answer Protestant (includes United Church of Christ, Baptist, Lutheran, Methodist, Episcopal, Presbyterian and other Christians), 13 percent say Muslim.
April: A Newsweek poll shows the Rev. Jeremiah Wright controversy has no impact on public perceptions about Obama's religion. The portion of the voting population that believe he is Muslim remains 13 percent -- and that belief is higher (16 percent) among those described as working class whites.
April 21: Obama tells The New York Times:
"It's not just that I'm a Christian and some of these emails are misinforming people. They're also feeding on anti-Muslim sentiment and that's also wrong."
June 12: The Obama campaign unveils a Web site called Fight the Smears to address the email rumors.

The best chance McCain has of winning is by Republicans smearing Barack and the Democrats in general. McCarthyism, Nixon's "southern strategy," the smears against Dukakis twenty years ago, the smears and gutter campaign by Republicans against Democrats in the Congressional elections six and two years ago, against Kerry four years ago.

What is truly sad is how many voters the Republicans are able to fool with their gutter, smear tactics.

Dear Wesley Clark:

On Face The Nation, acting as a surrogate for the Obama campaign, you made the following remark:

"I don't think getting in a fighter plane and getting shot down is a qualification to become president."

First of all as an American I am offended by this remark. It strikes at the patriotism that all Americans should feel toward the American military.

You made several other remarks which had as their objective to belittle the qualifications of Senator John McCain to lead the military of this great nation.

All these remarks you apparently made in an effort to support a person who has absolutely no qualifications whatsoever to be President of the United States, to lead the military or to make any decisions which affect this great nation.

You have nothing but shame on your head.

In sharp contrast to your remarks I must ask you:

1) Does doing cocaine like Obama has make Obama qualified to be President? Crack cocaine puts holes in one's brain, regular cocaine could as well. Obama has not specified which kind of cocaine he used.

2) Does, instead of doing one's job which he was elected to, does going on a book tour make Obama qualified to be President?

3) Does donating $20,000.00 in one year to a racist Black Liberation Theology Church make one qualified to be President? Racist based upon statements made in the Church's mission statement which were posted Church's own website.

4) Does claiming to be falsely offended by comments made by Gerry Ferraro simply in an effort to racially polarized the electorate, does that make one qualified to be President?

5) Does running a racial campaign in South Carolina, and pressing the Superdelegates with essentially racist arguments that there would be "Riots in the Streets if the Superdelegates did not vote for the black candidate" - all while having the Campaign Theme of being the "Post-Racial Candidate" - does that kind of deception and hypocrisy qualify one to be President?

Mr. Clark - You are not qualified to hold any office under the United States after the remarks you made on Face the Nation.

Your statements reveal a deeply flawed judgement and a deeply flawed character that only a team of psychologists could examine properly.

Please remove yourself from any further Campaign statements and do this country a final service with your silence.

Chris:

The ROOTS of this story are OBAMA'S OWN BOOK - in which Obama talks about his Muslim schooling. Please go get the quotes yourself - and David Broder just might be losing it.

Also, Obama's own brother is on record as making statement about Obama's Muslim schooling.

Obama's own brother said Obama was a Muslim. The implication here is that there is no basis for the fact that Obama was a Muslim, but there is.

This is not a smear.

Chris I would like to point out that Sunnis draw little difference between moderate and radical Sunnis - the distinction are between Sunni and Shi'ite. Sunnis view themselves as all the same - to attempt place them into two camps is simply not how they view themselves.

So this is wrong.

Obama was a Sunni Muslim. Obama received training at a Muslim school. These are facts not smears.

In addition, Obama's website incorrectly attempted to draw a distinction between a "radical Muslim school" and a "moderate Muslim school."

Well, the website SHOULD BE CLEAR and state that Obama did go to a MUSLIM SCHOOL.

I believe that Obama's website that attempts to clear the air is actually DECEPTIVE and unworthy of confidence, just like the candidate Obama is as well

Man o Man. The placing of miniscule issues
close to the eyes of already sensitized readers/viewers is a GREAT way to hog the conversation.
Muslim? well, it grabbed my interest. I live in country which had 911, and I read two books a month on 'muslims' for a couple of years.
I sometimes forgot about the uninsured. All 50 million... So it worked for a while on me...
The un-Reverend Wright? OK, why DID our guy O stay for 20 years? I assume a whole lot of people he needed to work with also went there, and how do you split from them and still do social work in that town?
And in putting that in the forefront of my mind I lowered my priorities on better VA care...it worked, again.

And all those little nasty rumors are aimed at our emotional biases...we fall for them just as the religious right did, all those years, for 'abortion' issues and
'gay marriage' and we'll get nothing but
misdirected and used by those manipulators, just like the religiously benighted do.

JUST A THOUGHT:
Maybe we should test whether it's more likely a winning strategy to cook up our own slander against our rivals THAN to aim to discredit the slanders-from-the-repuglikanaziis*.Truth, once the emotions have run like fire in the veins, is a very weak response. So let's talk about the moral degeneration of curreently powerful Ugly-kanx. My favorite line from the Hispanic Problem spam.

"Not just a simple conflict of interest UFCW's endorsement and their powerful resources are no more than an illegal kick back for Obama in a racist manner knowingly obstructing an investigation of UFCW as it relates to my particular situation."

Illegal kickback in a racist manner? Can something be kicked back racistly?

Investigate is the right word.
Capt Howard is likely an Obama supporter. I would verify people like chaos45i before dismissing their posting as just spreading rumor. It would be great for Obama to label all first hand accounts of Obama as such but not the voting public if they are indeed based in fact.

A point is being missed here; Whether an accusation is true or not, once it hits the internet the mindless and the predjudice will accept it as fact. Much of our country has sunk to the level of a Jerry Springer Show audience. Postings, and print rumor are not fact. We all need to be a lttle more questioning and investigate things for ourselves. Take no ones word for anything. There are many people running around loose on the internet with alterior motives.

So which is it?

Is it where he has been sitting for 20 years or where his mother put him when he was 7 or whatever? Hmmm. I just cannot figure it out! Let me think about it some more....

I also wish to have an end to the seemingly endless Hilary carping. She did not win. Barak Obama actually went out and collected the votes and totaled up more delegates. That was the game and the rules. And he won the game playing by the rules. What is there to talk about any more. Vote for whoever you want. Its America.

The side issues -- Rev. Wright, Phleger, fist bumps, Ayers, etc. -- are just useful cover for those who wouldn't support BO even if he were Abe Lincoln. The guilt-by-association stuff being thrown against BO went out with Joe McCarthy. (Catch "The Way We Were" movie about the Hollywood blacklist if you don't want to pick up a history book.) When "Fair and Balanced" Hannity spends about a hour a day (at least) on TV and radio about Wright, etc., you know it is a completely bogus matter. I know full well Hannity, Harriet Christian, Carmella Lewis, and the rest will continue to distract us with Wright and flag jewelry and BO emails to Scarlett Johanssen, but the rest of us are concerned about $5 a gallon gas, having no ice at the North Pole (yeah, that's right), the tanking of our financial system, and our soldiers abroad. Regardless of whom you support, let's stick to real issues not emailed rumors and junk. Peace to all.

Obama gets SLAMMED again in the FEDERAL CORRUPTION TRIAL

PROSECUTOR'S HOLDING BACK FOR FALL SURPRISE ???

From yesterday's Chicago Sun-Times:

Prosecutors held back on using Obama's name

June 27, 2008

BY NATASHA KORECKI Federal Courts Reporter nkorecki@suntimes.com

Barack Obama's name could have been invoked more at the corruption trial of his former fund-raiser Tony Rezko.

But it appears prosecutors opted against bringing Obama into the mix during the two-month trial.

Newly unsealed documents show that prosecutors sought to call witnesses to testify about Rezko's ties to Obama, the presumptive Democratic nominee for president.

The Illinois senator was the recipient of "straw" campaign contributions made by others on behalf of Rezko -- money that Obama has since given to charities.

The documents indicate that prosecutors considered offering witnesses to explore why Rezko used others to contribute to Obama and also to Blagojevich, and U.S. District Judge Amy J. St. Eve ruled that they could. But they did not end up offering any such testimony during the trial.

"Witnesses will testify that Rezko was a long-standing supporter and fund-raiser of Barack Obama," prosecutors wrote.

Later, St. Eve ruled that Obama references would be allowed into the trial, but prosecutors apparently opted not to invoke Obama's name.

Broadway Joe 05:02 PM must be smoking some funny stuff to try to claim that Barack Obama is for all races etc.,etc
Barack Obama's 20 year membership in the black version of the KKK Trinity church proves just the opposite. No one becomes a member and stays a member in a racist white and America--hating church like Trinity, who doesn't agree with what's being done and what's being said from the pulpid. Oprah became a member of that racist church only long enough to hear the racial hatred and the anti-white and anti-America sermons given by Jerimiah Wright Jr. a few times. She quit, and quit fast because she wasn't a hater or a racist. Barack and Michelle Obama on the other hand were members for more than 20 years. Only now when Barack needs the white usefull idiot vote has he gotten religion. This guy's about as phony as a 3 dollar bill with Donald Duck's picture on it. The leophard hasn't changed his spots, he's still a racist white and America-hater.

The Fix does a disservice to Matt Mosk's piece by excerpting it, then talking about articles in Politico and The Nation that have also examined the origins of that e-mail. And Mosk's piece doesn't center around two people; it centers around only one -- Danielle Allen, the political theorist whose attempt to track down the e-mail's writer is chronicled. Danielle Allen isn't just any old political theorist -- she's one of the smartest around. Here's some relevant information about her from Mosk's piece:

"Allen was ideally suited to embark on such a difficult hunt. She boasts two doctorates, one in classics from Cambridge University and the other in government from Harvard University, and won a $500,000 MacArthur "genius" award at the age of 29. Last year she joined the faculty of the institute, the only African American and one of a handful of women at the elite research center, where she works alongside groundbreaking physicists, mathematicians and social scientists."

I'm disappointed in the synopsis written by The Fix. It would have been better to just post the link to Mosk's excellent article.

Check around Broadway Joe. Chaos45i has been around longer than Barack Obama even decided to run for president. Chaos45i has more credibility then your willing to admit. And I disagree if anything he is reporting is remotely true. BO is clearly not for all people regardless of race.

Whatever Barack Obama is now, he WAS A MUSLIM ONCE!
In Obama's own book, describing his life and other victimhood BS, he mentions that he was a student in a madrassa while his mother and Muslim stepfather where living in Jakarta, Indonesia, and before his mother got rid of him by sending him to live with her parents (they did keep Obama's little sister though). No one gets into a Muslim school who isn't a Muslim. No Christians, Jews, Buddists, or any non-Muslim need apply. As in all Islamic schools thruout the world, Koran-studies is a must and it's drilled into all students. Barack Obama and the Obamanistas who are now denying that Obama was ever a Muslim are lying. All one has to do is read Obama's own book.

It is ironic this post is about how a bogus smear about Barack being a Muslim got circulated, and now Chaos45i uses it to circulate another bogus smear against BO. It sounds like Chaos45i and his friends have some "personal issues" that may well have merit -- let's be kind -- with Hormel and are blaming it on BO. My mail came late Saturday but I don't blame BO since, after all, he is part of the same federal government the Postal Service is in. From what I read, BO is for all people regardless of race, sex, national origin, worker status, and lifestyle choice. Whatever you say about BO, you have to give him that. Don't hate, appreciate...

I am shocked and saddened that people I have assumed are decent and smart forward these things. If you get such an email send it back to the person and tell them if they continue to send you such trash you will take it as a personal insult, not a joke. The whole controversy assumes there's something wrong about belonging to a particular religion. The American people deserve a general election focused on the real issues like the War, gas prices, housing values, global warming, health care, etc. -- and not on the false media narratives of Rev. Wright, Rev. Phleger, fist bumps, emails to Scarlett Johnassen, using the adjective "bitter," flag jewelry, Michelle's college thesis, alleged uppitiness, and BO's middle name. Chris Cillizza needs to learn the difference between something that can be proven and something that can't be proven.

For instance, someone could prove that they weren't at the dry cleaners at 5pm on Friday.

However, that same person can't prove they are a specific religion. They might practice one religion while secretly being of another religion, or other members of that religion might consider them to still be member of that religion despite their current situation.

That's certainly a fine point, but it's one that CC should try to make, and then correct the related errors in the article.

All Members of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus

NOTICE & COMPLAINT OF RACISM
It was recently reported that in response to the suggestion by the press that he has a Hispanic/Latino problem with support among Latino/Hispanic Americans Democratic Presumptive nominee Barack Obama on June 17, 2008 lied to the press when he suggested he has no Hispanic/Latino problem when the truth and fact of the matter is in a deceptive manner Obama is showing his continued willingness to mislead the American public, the press, and those Hispanic/Latino voters he still needs by covering up the fact he continues to be unwilling to recognize & address the legitimate issue of clear racism against Hispanic complainants who report incidents of race discrimination at the Chicago,IL. offices of the Illinois Department of Human Rights and the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission in his own home state of Illinois. I, an Illinois U.S. born Hispanic American citizen, in a timely manner reported 3 incidents of race discrimination involving Hormel Foods Corporation , UFCW, and Target Corporation to IDHR & EEOC. Not just a simple conflict of interest UFCW's endorsement and their powerful resources are no more than an illegal kick back for Obama in a racist manner knowingly obstructing an investigation of UFCW as it relates to my particular situation. It was also reported that on June 17, 2008 Obama met with the members of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus but I am certain Obama failed to mention this legitimate issue that concerns Hispanic/Latino Americans and it is fair and reasonable for one to conclude that in furtherance of a COVER UP Obama at this meeting was not honest and not forthcoming to the members of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus about the fact he is aware that my notices & complaints over a course of years now regarding the racism at IDHR & EEOC related to my 3 reported incidents of race discrimination being COVERED UP/Concealed and buried by the actions of Obama and IDHR & EEOC officials have, to this date, been repeatedly ignored, never addressed, never investigated, and no one has ever been held accountable for intentionally sabotaging and denying me , a Hispanic complainant, language that states on official "IDHR & EEOC" charges discrimination based on RACE against Hormel Foods Corporation, UFCW, and Target Corporation when nonHispanic complainants are not sabotaged or denied the same language of discrimination based on RACE on their official "IDHR & EEOC" charges of discrimination at IDHR & EEOC. Obama will have to accept responsibility for his racist actions and/or inactions as it will never be acceptable by me for Obama to blame others or for him to make any excuses for allowing this racism against Americans who happen to be Hispanic to go on as long as it has. I urge you not to support Obama and to join me bringing this racism to the attention of the Hispanic community until and unless Obama himself fully addresses this matter.

I am shocked by the treatment our best two-term president endured during this campaign. First of all Bill Clinton faced impeachment over having sex with an intern and George Bush has gotten away with murder.

Second, Bill was absolutely right in stating what the rest of felt at the time. Obama didn't have a chance in hell to be the president of the United States. Obama's campaign was a fantasy at the time Bill said that.

Third, the fact that African Americans turned on him after being called racist over one comment, forgetting all he had done for blacks in his two-term presidency. I want to know who is racist when the vote is 92% to 8% for Obama.

Fourth, the treatment of the First Lady just because she was a women really brought out the treatment of women in general.

Fifth, what they both had to endure when Barack Obama claimed victory and acting like the nominee before he was declared the nominee.

Sixth, every time I said "gotcha" when shocking stories came out. It turned out he was the chosen one and the media did everything in their power to say we will report only the bad about the Clintons and ignore anything about Obama except for Fox News.

Seventh, to have Hillary lose the nomination over half votes and giving delegates to someone who wasn't on the ballot has made many of us feel like this is a repeat of the 2000 and 2004 elections.

Eight, People who wouldn't be where they are if it weren't for the Clintons putting them in their administration turning on them the way they did in endorsing someone with no experience at all.

No wonder women are furious. We had to endure the constant misogyny of Hillary. We also were angry at women pundits who think attacking women make them one of the boys was unbelievable.

The way the media picked the nominee has got us all furious. Feeling like our votes were just an exercise and nothing more is not a good feeling in a Democracy.

Being from Arizona, I know that McCain is a crook. Our own governor was impeached for the very same acts. This man is the worst choice for many reasons. McCain does not deserve to be the president of this United States. McCain does not deserve an "ancient history".

Many women and men who voted for Hillary in the primaries are planning on demanding that Hillary be on the first ballot at the convention. If that does not happen things could get very ugly in Denver. It won't be a repeat of '68 but what happens after the convention is going to be history making in the way Hillary voters cast their votes.

Many Hillary Clinton voters really feel that she is being forced to back Obama but secretly want us to carry on to Denver. With the "Million Voter March" being planned in all 50 states our voices will be heard.

If Obama keeps alienating his base by abandoning and softening the very positions upon which he based his "transformational" campaign, he needn't worry about the impact of rumors and innuendo. Without the firm support of his base, Obama's got no base and all.

If Obama continues to morf into the typical expedient politician, don't be surprised if some of his most ardent supporters defect to join the subterranean movement to nominate an alternative candidate at the convention.

Cillizza might have done a little more research (like, say, typing the name "Andy Martin" into Google) and discovered that Martin is not just "an Internet newspaper publisher" (whatever that means) but also a Republican activist and current GOP Senate candidate in Illinois. He's also a certifiable nutcase, as witnessed by his campaign bio self description as "America's most respected independent foreign policy and intelligence analyst."

That Martin is the ultimate (or at least peniultimate) source of the Obama-is-a-Muslim smear isn't very surprising. Unfortunately, neither is the fact that Cizzilla, pathetic Republican tool that he is, has just given the guy a free ad in the Washington Post.

It's the same old story in one sense. The Republican Party, having policies that benefit only a small minority of wealthy Americans, basically MUST exploit the fear, gullibility and ignorance of many "average" people to have a prayer of winning elections. Hence we get the almost-entirely-fabricated Swiftboat accusations, and all the garbage that has come up around Obama. If elections were on issues alone, there wouldn't be any need to even hold ballotting.
