VIDEO: Milbank Wants To Hug It Out

Dana Milbank is funny. Really funny. (Trust us: he sits right next to The Fix in the Post newsroom.)

And, his Washington Sketch is a must-read -- as Dana trains his rapier-like wit on the political culture of Washington.

Milbank -- with the help of Post.com videographer Akira "Aki" Hakuta -- has been expanding his domain into the world of web video over these last few months with a weekly video sketch.

We thought Milbank and Hakuta could never top their piece from the Democratic National Convention but then this week we saw one of their latest offerings.

The quick summary: Dana, a rally for John McCain and Sarah Palin, and hugs. Hilarity ensues.

I'm sorry Chris. I just got caught up in the emotion and got a little carried away. I love The Fix, and will be an avid follower with or without posting.

I think it's time I took a step back and won't be posting any more. Maybe after the election.

Mr. Cillizza, I wanted to correct you on several past mistakes. On your House line you stated, (again), that Erick Paulsen is a State Senator when he is only a State Rep. Two, you said the DCCC's non-involvement in AZ-01 is an indication of how far in the bag it is. My numbers show that the DCCC has spent almost 1,000,000 dollars there, including a quarter of a million in just the past week alone.

But conservatives don't dislike what they describe as the MSM for being biased, they dislike it for being biased the wrong way. I doubt that even many conservatives honestly feel that the majority of Fox News shows are really fair and balanced. Even the shows that are not ostensibly opinion shows, such as Fox & Friends, where two of the three hosts have pretty much given up on even pretending to be unbiased. It's just a matter of whether you want conservative or liberal bias.

I don't think Dana Milbank is funny. At all. He is self-centered, snarky and always acting like everything he covers is some big joke that only he and a few other sophisticates gets. What does he actually contribute? Dana Milbank is to Jon Stewart as George Bush is to Abraham Lincoln.

Chris, this is off topic, but maybe you can help out here. You have more influence than I do with the editors.

On the Post's political interactive map, there's a huge and stupefying dichotomy. States in which Obama has large, sometimes double-digit leads are listed as "battleground" states, while states with McCain having a slender lead are "leaning GOP." This doesn't make sense. Here's a list:

Obama +13.8%: Battleground state (PA)
Obama +10.4%: Battleground state (NH)
Obama +10.0%: Battleground state (NJ)
Obama +9.5%: Battleground state (IA)
Obama +9.0%: Battleground state (OR)
Obama +8.2%: Battleground state (MN)
Obama +8.2%: Battleground state (MI)
Obama +8.8%: Battleground state (WI)
Obama +7.3%: Battleground state (NM)
McCain +6.8%: Leaning Republican (GA)
Obama +5.1%: Battleground state (VA)
Obama +4.0%: Battleground state (CO)
McCain +3.8%: Leaning Republican (IN)
Obama +3.5%: Battleground state (OH)
Obama +3.1%: Battleground state (FL)
Obama +3.0%: Battleground state (NV)
McCain +2.2%: Leaning Republican (WV)

In a word, this is a pantload. How about intervening with the powers that be to run a straight assessment? Either they're all battleground states, there's a bunch of "leaning Dem" states in the mix that need to be labeled as such, or the Post needs to explain more fully why a state where Obama leads by 14 is still "up for grabs."

A democracy can be no better than We The People, and at this time and place 'attack dog politics' is a loser.

http://blogs.abcnews.com/thenumbers/2008/10/attack-blowback.html

I suspect that the worst economic melt-down in a century is the cause. As sure as Jefferson and John Adams went at it hammer and tongs - attack politics will be back in vogue. But not this time.

Chris:

Maybe Milbank is a real hoot in the office, but his focus on himself is just sad. He's right there where these scary crowds are ramping up their hatred, and the best he can do is waste time making jokes about feelings toward the media.

I'll bet the general public attitude toward the media would improve significantly if he and others focused their efforts on disseminating factual information rather than feeding preconceptions.

Leave the funny to the entertainers.

AT MCCAIN RALLY MINISTER ASKS FOR "HIS" GOD TO HELP DEFETE OBAMA. THE HATE IS SO SUBTEL BUT IT JUST DOESN'T STOP. IT IS NOW GODS JOB TO HELP MCCAIN DEFETE OBAMA.

At a McCain rally in Davenport, IA, yesterday, while delivering the invocation, Arnold Conrad, a minister, said:

"There are millions of people around this world praying to their god -- whether it's Hindu, Buddha, Allah -- that [Obama] wins, for a variety of reasons. And Lord, I pray that you will guard your own reputation, because they're going to think that their God is bigger than you, if that happens. So I pray that you will step forward and honor your own name with all that happens between now and election day."

37th, not that you will take this seriously, but dude, you're not making ANY FRIENDS or convincing ANYONE of ANYTHING. Your writing is ungrammatical and poorly spelled, and you do not provide any evidence for your ranting. Remember the undecided voters so important to both your candidate and Obama? Most of them want a competent and intelligent president, and your "advocacy" is not doing anything but irritating those who read it... and here I speak from experience. So if you're really trying to influence the undecided voters, I would suggest 1) spell check, 2) observing the rules of grammar and capitalization, 3) courtesy - even to those who disagree with you, and last but by no means least, laying out logical, relevant, and respectful arguments which do not ignore the opposing position. Or in two words: grow up.

ANGRY GOP RALLY SHOUTERS: ARE THEY AGIT-PROP PLANTS?

Politico reporters should spend some time on the periphery of these rallies, in the hours before the scheduled event.

They might discern that some of the most vociferous rabble-rousers hang together in packs, don't quite look like your "average Joe," and appear to be part of an orchestrated "street theater" -- not necessarily a reflection of spontaneous crowd enthusiasm. Examine closely their attire, and the electronics they are carrying.

Could they be the "stromtroopers" in a troubling offensive?

I saw a video of people entering a Palin Mccain rally and they were carrying what looked like professionally printed signs saying "Terrorist" and "Traitor". At the rallies you can see them waving them. If Palin and John Mccain didn't want that they would have been stopped at the door and had the signs taken away. Those rallies have very strong security. It leads me to believe they were supplied with the signs by Mccain and palin.

Dana -- this is the same line (you can see many of the same people) who were screaming vile epithets at Democrats holding Obama signs a little bit before where you were standing. Some of the printable ones were that Obama is a terrorist, the always popular "go home" (where did they think Obama's supporters were from?) communist, socialist, "Die" ... Muslim ... you get the idea. Check this out if you want to see a compilation of last week's campaign ugliness, and a little hope at the end.

Once again today in Iowa, McCain's introducer infers that Obama is a Muslim. Obama is not like any candidate before him as he is black and therefore particular attention must be made to the type of rhetoric taking place on the trail.Given the penchant for violence by many extremists it is dangerous to continue to use these virile comments in the campaign.
Frank Rich in NYT's oped today wrote an exceptionally insightful article on this very topic.
One quote was of particular relevance: "All’s fair in politics. John McCain and Sarah Palin have every right to bring up William Ayers, even if his connection to Obama is minor, even if Ayers’s Weather Underground history dates back to Obama’s childhood, even if establishment Republicans and Democrats alike have collaborated with the present-day Ayers in educational reform. But it’s not just the old Joe McCarthyesque guilt-by-association game, however spurious, that’s going on here. Don’t for an instant believe the many mindlessly “even-handed” journalists who keep saying that the McCain campaign’s use of Ayers is the moral or political equivalent of the Obama campaign’s hammering on Charles Keating. "
As Rich notes,It is unfair for any responsible journalist to try to equate the rhetoric on Obama's campaign to the hatefulness expressed particualrly by Palin and their crowds. So please dont do so out of some false sense of needing to ensure no bias is shown...
speaking out against what is morally wrong isnt being biased...its being responsible and decent!!!

These are the people that the Dems are calling "dangerous" and like George Wallace causing racial divisions in the country.

That's the latest Obama spin...these "angry" people are "dangerous" and unhinged. Meanwhile it was OBAMA that told his supporters to "get in the faces" of neighbors and tell them to vote for him.

Get a grip people! Lots of people are angry at the gov't, especially the Dems in Congress who looked the other way or even participated in the corruption leading to this economic debacle, then spend more money to "fix" it. Now that the "fix" hasn't worked, Pelosi says another couple hundred billion will "fix" it this time. Bull...

Could they be the "stormtroopers" in a troubling offensive?

The Obama people are showing how Post-partisan they really are. This proves that 1) Obama is a FRAUD by paying the bloggers to say such things and 2) Obama's supporters are a joke by tolerating the hypocrisy.

yea.

AMERICA IS PRETTY SICK OF THE POST-PARTISAN AND POST-RACIAL CANDIDATE APPLYING THOSE STANDARDS TO EVERYONE ELSE BUT HIMSELF AND HIS SUPPORTERS.

"Countdown" and the host Keith Obamaman have that effect on people.

Someone can be serious and have a sense of humor at the same time. I'm a huge Milbank fan. I especially like his political discussions where he bats anyone who says anything canned, no matter what wing it comes from.

Sorry but I disagree with your opinion about Dana Milbank. He was a first rate reporter with a keen sense for analyzing politics. Starting with his appearances on "Countdown" (remember the orange vest?) he's turned himself into a clown.
