Wag the Blog: Coulter vs Edwards
Is it appropriate for us to write about the Ann Coulter - John Edwards fight? We believe it is. Whatever you may think of the controversy, it has become a factor in Edwards's run for the presidency and dealing with it has become a focus of his campaign.
Coulter's comments about Edwards on "Good Morning America" led the Edwards campaign to post the video as part of a fundraising pitch in the final days of the second fundraising quarter.
On "Hardball with Chris Matthews" Tuesday, Edwards' wife -- Elizabeth -- called in to ask Coulter, who was appearing on the show, to stop making personal attacks against her husband.
"The things she has said about John....lowers our political dialogue precisely at the time we need to raise it," said Elizabeth. (Coulter and John Edwards have a history -- she used a gay slur to describe him at the most recent Conservative Political Action Committee Conference in Washington and penned a column in 2003 that accused him of using his teenage son's death to further his political career.)
As Channel '08 reports today, the Edwards campaign posted a video last night of the former senator thanking his wife for calling "Hardball" to confront Coulter.
Regardless of what you think of Edwards or Coulter, this appears to be a win-win situation for both of them. Edwards is able to not only raise money as a result of being the target of her attacks but also cement himself as the true liberal in the race while Coulter's name and face are splashed all over cable television (and the blogosphere) -- virtually ensuring she will sell more books and remain in the public eye.
For today's Wag the Blog question we ask The Fix community for its take on the back and forth between Coulter and Edwards. Is this a win-win? Or a lose-lose? Somewhere in between? Should we be talking about this at all?
