Will President Obama be the first candidate to collect one billion dollars in a national campaign in 2012?

That sum, which would have seemed well beyond reach even four years ago, now seems in reach for a man who raised $750 million in 2008 as a first term senator from Illinois.

How could Obama do it? And what would it mean?
