Michelle Obama, Covergirl

UPDATE Aug. 8, 10:28 a.m.: The McCain campaign has released a new TV ad, called "Painful" that uses some of the Obama magazine covers to reiterate its "celebrity" label.

ORIGINAL POST:

By Ed O'Keefe

The McCain campaign may call Barack Obama the "biggest celebrity in the world," but a quick glance down the magazine aisle at your local newsstand shows he's sharing the spotlight with his wife and children. The "blogsitter" spent part of this week perusing publications he doesn't normally read (mostly because he doesn't have the time). People, Upscale, Essence, Ebony and Vanity Fair all feature either cover stories or profiles of Michelle Obama or the entire Obama family. (For some reason the cashier did not believe the blogsitter when he said he purchased the above titles for "research purposes.")

Michelle Obama on Ebony Cover
Michelle Obama is hard to miss in the magazine aisle these days.

"We've been working to introduce the Obamas to the American people throughout the course of the primary season and the general election, and will continue to do so," says Michelle Obama spokeswoman Katie McCormick Lelyveld. "Voters need to get a sense of who they are as a family."

The Obama campaign says it does not track the number of magazine cover stories about the senator, his wife, or the entire family. Time, Newsweek, Rolling Stone and Vibe, among others, have published several Obama covers. (Check out this neat collage of just some of those covers.) Portfolio Magazine's Jeff Bercovici reports the various Obama covers have been hit or miss from a sales perspective.

But will these magazine articles help boost the candidate's poll numbers or Mrs. Obama's favorability ratings? More on that below, but first a quick review of what's inside those covers:

Next week's Ebony magazine features an 11-page spread about Mrs. Obama that includes interviews with her mother, brother and several close friends.

"I love to look glamorous when there's a wonderful, purposeful event that is appropriate. But when I'm in Iowa campaigning with the girls, I am in Gap shorts and a T-shirt," Mrs. Obama says of her fashion sense. "My first job in all honesty is going to continue to be mom-in-chief," she later says of her family commitments. "We accessorize each other in many ways," she says of her marriage to the senator.

"She wanted to open the doors and let America see who she is. She invited Ebony into her inner circle," says the magazine's creative director Harriette Cole, who compiled more than 500 pages of notes for her report. The magazine has covered the senator's rise since before he ran for the Illinois state Senate, Cole said.

People recently reported from Obama's Chicago home and joined the family on the campaign trail "for an intimate conversation about how they live their lives." The spread includes wedding photos and more recent campaign shots. The magazine reports that Sasha, 7, and Malia, 10, must follow the "Obama House Rules." Rule number two: the girls are expected to make their beds in the morning, but Michelle says it "Doesn't have to look good -- just throw the sheet over it." That's my kind of mom!

• The September issue of Vanity Fair calls Michelle Obama the "commander in sheath" on its "International Best-Dressed List." Upscale magazine's report includes brief interviews with Michelle's brother, Craig Robinson, and D.C. Delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton, but little else in the way of original reporting.

But wait! There's more: Senator and Mrs. Obama appear on the cover of September's Ladies' Home Journal and the entire family will front the September issue of Essence.

As The Fix reported last month, our Battleground Soundings surveys of voters in Colorado, Michigan, Minnesota and Wisconsin show that roughly half of respondents knew enough about Michelle Obama to offer an opinion about her. Opinion was most divided in Colorado (30 percent favorable to Michelle/26 percent unfavorable) while in each of the other three states roughly three in ten voters said they had a favorable impression of her while fewer than one in five said they felt unfavorably toward her.

As for the Obama family as a whole, The Washington Post-ABC News poll from June also reported that 44 percent of adults had a favorable view of both Obamas, while 21 percent had negative view. A Pew Research Center poll also released in June reported that news coverage of Mrs. Obama was more likely to be seen as negative than reports about Cindy McCain.

So will "intimate" magazine profiles help?

"I think we're all figuring this out," Mrs. Obama said today on "Good Morning America." "I've had an opportunity to talk to people who've done this before. I had a great conversation with Hillary Clinton. I also talked to Tipper Gore -- lots of folks who have had great advice on how do you make sure that your kids are whole and grounded."

Post polling analyst Jennifer Agiesta and washingtonpost.com interns Ashley Bressler and Hannah Simpson contributed to this report.

Michelle Obama is finally be proud of her country. Maybe that is why she is smiling. Then again, chances are good that she won't be on Nov 5.

I used to read comments on sites like AOL, and think, "wow, these are some of the most vile, ignorant, racist comments" I actually was naive enough to think that I could find folks engaging in intelligent discourse on the Washington Post and boy, was I wrong! I continue to see folks perpetuate lies about the Obamas. Comments like "Michelle Shaniqua Obama" and how she has to strain to speak articulately????? Are you freakin' kidding me? Michelle, if you bothered to learn her story, came from a hard-working two parent family and was an overachiever. She is a Princeton graduate and a Harvard law school graduate. I guarantee that most of the folks commenting on here were lucky to get a GED, if that, judging by your ignorant and racist comments.

Alot of white folks say Blacks should get an education and go out and get a job, etc. Well, Barack and Michelle went above and beyong that - yet you still complain. Now those of us who worked hard, you accuse us of being uppity and arrogant! Wow, can't win for losing.

Theere is no Whitey tape! The whole thing was a fabrication. In fact, this the exact same scenario that was in a novel a few years back. But since most of you do not read and/or not interested in presenting the truth, because it would not serve your selfish interest, you wouldn't know that.

I'm still in search of sites on the internet with some intelligent discourse about the ISSUES - found a few so far, but this site is definitely not one of them!

Why aren't these "covers" of magazines putting Michelle with Rev Wright? That is the REAL Michelle Obama. And that is what she represents. 20 years of HATE! It is AMAZING that a Party that said it was the party for "Everyone" and "Every American" would literally have Barack Racist Obama as its nominee. The DNC has totally lost it and half of its party. NO OBAMA'S!

OK

These people are hostile to our most basic Constitutional Freedoms - Freedom of Speech - instead of encouraging an airing of a wide range of views the Obama Campaign seeks to harass those who Speak.

Yes I am a Democrat, I voted for that wimp John Kerry in 2004, voted for Al Gore in 2000 who did win the election, and Bill Clinton in 1996 and 1992, I sat out 1988 did not like Michael Dukakis. I get tired of you liberals in the Democratic party who find it hard to believe that some of us Democrats will be voting for John McCain. He is the only reasonable choice left since the nomination was stolen from Hillary. Also don't even try to insinuate that I am a racist because I will not vote for Obama. I know the issues, and Obama has little or no issues of substance for me ( moderate Democrat ).

It is incomprehensible to me that semiliterate dunderheads attempt to offer meaningful commentary about serious and sensitive subjects! The misspellings and misusage of everyday English on this site is frightening. And you idiots are running around loose and eligible to vote? So the mystery about how we wound up with "Dubbya" as President is solved.

By the way, I believe the word some of you are looking for is "critically".

Michelle is an elegant, intelligent woman. Yes, we do look at the candidate's wife or husband during the election process. They also represent our country on the shrinking world stage. Of course, I am an Obama supporter. Tired of not so bright people attempting to lead our nation. Too bad Laura wasn't president instead of George.

Again, the *Socialism* garbage.
It would be nice if these people that mention Socialism, actually knew what it was.
And of course, these same people that think social government programs are bad, think nothing about Corporations that keep their profits, when the going is good, then receive huge taxpayer financed bailouts, after they pocket all the profits (banks, Fannie-Mae, brokerage houses, etc).
Other than that, the closest thing we have to Socialism, is Social Security & Medicare, programs the large majority of Americans favor. Just because something helps the People, rather than corporate interests, does not make it Socialism.
Me, I prefer helping people in need, as opposed to bailing out, poorly-managed, corrupt Corporations.

I was not aware Michelle was running for the office of First Lady. If I remember it correctly her husband said to leave her alone.

We really need to get beyond the racial insults. What is important is what the president does or does not do. Why, President Bush ran for the office because he wanted to bring the government together. Work out issues. Get congress to work together. Now Senator obama wants to do the same. Problem with that is no one can make congress do anything. So how is Senator Obama going to get everyone together. During all of his speeches he has talked down to Republicans to the extent that unless there is a Democrat in every seat there will probably be little working together.

What I oppose about Senator is the issues. His proposed policies and agenda are definitely socialist. He wants the government to "take care of us." No thanks. The government does not know enough about me to know what I want or how I live. Therefore, they cannot help me live the life I want. That is my job.

A vote for a Democrat is a vote for socialism.

I would be proud to have Mrs. Obama represent me as First Lady of the United States. She is a class act. She exudes warmth, style, and class. She is well educated and exudes confidence and caring. She is respected by her husband, and loved by her children.

No wooden doll here! No wife offered up to be chosen Ms. Buffalo Chip for all the bikers by participating in a half nude, lewd performing, girlie contest! Shame on Sen McCain!

Has anyone asked McCain:
-why he sought the support of Hagee and Parsley, two prominent evangelical pastors who expressed anti-Jewish and anti-Catholic sentiments, whose endorsements he later had to denounce?
-why he offered his wife up to be Ms. Bull Chip at a Harley Rally?
-why the country got in such bad shape and why he believes Washington is broken when he has been in Washington for the last 20+ years?
-why he voted with Bush over 90% of the time?
-why the Bush tax cuts he once opposed are now good for America?
-why he wants to give his oil cronies more off-shore land on which to drill when they have not drilled on the off-shore land they already have?
-why McCain has no vision for America?

Stuck in the Past, McCain! No vision for the future.

For all who find it an issue that we will have a black man as president, IT IS YOUR OWN ACKNOWLEDGED OR UNACKNOWLEDGED BIAS AND PREDUCICE THAT PERPETRATES ALL HATE AND VIOLENCE IN THE WHOLE WORLD!!! I MUST MAKE A FEW POINTS: 1. What makes Barack Obama more black than white??? He is 1/2 of each, raised by his white mother and white grandparents. It is you who label all people of dark skin with your predudice fears. 2. You may say HE HAS CHOSEN TO ALIGN HIMSELF WITH THE BLACK COMMUNITY AND CHOSEN A BLACK WIFE. But it is because that is the community where he is accepted! 3. It is you, the small minded, who are so blindly fearful and predudice that you judge a man by the color of his skin instead of the content of his heart, that will be the destruction of HUMANITY!!!

Someone here said - "Please quit comparing Michelle to Jackie Kennedy it sounds ridiculous and just forces people to look at her more criticly."
Well, the thing is, most of the Obama campaign would NEVER make this comparison. Just as they would never call Barack "the one." It is the media that perpetuates this stuff. Michelle is Michelle,a human being, a smart woman, well educated, who was brought up by a loving mom and a disabled father who continued to work hard to send his kids to good shcools - and she excelled. She is a warm and loving mother and incredibly supportive spouse. Jackie Onasis was botn to wealth, married wealth (twice) and spoke beautifully, but like a little girl. Jackie O gave us an image of coolness and style, Michelle O gives us warmth and strength, along with style. They are both wonderful images and anyone who has a problem with it is worrying about the wrong things!
Cindy McCain should have gone ahead, per John's suggestion, and done the wet t-shirt contest and the biker ball. She already looks like a wet Yorkshire Terrier.
Is THIS what the Presidential campaign is about?

Just because we disagree with Obama does not make us racist. I am so tired of the Liberal wing of my party (Democrats) throwing that line around. Just shows how shallow and lack of substance Obama and his supportors have. Some of us (Democrats) just don't like Obama, and we marched and defended many for civil rights. Get a new line going, the race card just doesn't play, you can't have it both ways.

Interesting comment, jansjay. It was the fact that the same posts appeared over and over again, slightly changing over time, that had me thinking this was more than someone with waaay too much time on his/her hands (I'll give that award to JakeD).

Then proper breeding. Poodles, perhaps?
Then sitting down to tea with the Queen.
Next, eating with your mouth open.
Then, ghetto speech.

Another poster suggested that we Google "Dianne2" and you'll find her all over the place. I did and she's on any and ever blog where Michelle Obama's name is mentioned. She must have a customized RSS Reader that recognizes MO's name and pumps her the story so she can respond in only ways he knows how - racial hatred!

It will be a time of national pride as a whole to have the Obama family in the White House. The Obama administration will be one of great strength and resolve. Foreign nations can see and feel the positive "change," that are about to occur. It's too bad that so many American's cannot give Barrack and Michelle Obama (the entire family) the respect they deserve in running a magnificent campaign.

He will surely be written-up in history as one America's finest leaders.

To all the haters out there... stop hating and put some sensible business in your heads. That racism stuff is old, and frankly played-out.

Great article. I enjoyed it very much. But to the person who signs herself as "Dianne72": it is amazing that anyone, especially someone as uneducated and unsophisticated as your posts give evidence that you are, could be appalled at anything that someone as educated and sophisticaed as Mrs. Obama does. I bet you've been listening to Sean Hannity and Rush Limpburger.
And as far as hanging Black art on the walls to the White House: why shouldn't Black art be hanging there since it was a Black man, Phillip Reid (a slave) that helped design it. Turn the tv and computer off sometimes and read a book, darlin'.

BLUE VOTER, VOTING RED.
You cannot have it both ways, Michelle is airbrushed to cover all her flaws, just like the Media, MSNBC and the Democratic Party Elites are suppressing her hatred for white America. Give us some real substance, I want her thesis, publications and why the hell did she along with her husband stay in a racially divided, bigoted church for over 20 years. That is the real issue. Anyone can look glam on a cover, even Caroline Kennedy and she is not pretty at all, what makes this woman all the sudden proud of America? Because is it that her husband is pulling one over America under the disguise of skin color. This woman had over 20 years of training to hate white America by the Rev. Wright, that is the real issue. Cindy McCain is prettier and has more class than Michelle has in her fist throwing pinkie. By the way Chris it is obvious you work for the Obama campaign.

McCain has nothing to offer positive so he drags us all down into the same Bush/Rove crap that America is sick of. Aren't you sick of that smirking.

If the Media does not turn the spotlight on McCain and dig into his life the way they have with Obama at every inane suggestion of McCain, then we will all have to sit and watch Katie and Tom and the rest of them go through the same tired "mea culpa" post election introspection where they try to shed quilt for failing to call McCain on his hateful tactics.

At first, I thought the whole "Obama's a celebrity" tack taken by McCain was silly. I'm starting to think McCain's people are onto something. Just when the Britney Spears coverage had died down to the point where it wasn't so sickening, there's a new novelty on the face of every magazine at the checkout. And the continuous reporting on Michelle Obama's fashion sense and fav designer, and what she wore when makes me gag. I'm starting to actually hope the guy is elected, so that this country can dispense with its need to show itself and the world that it can't be all that bad, because it elected a black president.

Despite hundreds of journalists interviews, Michelle and Barack Obama stories, front page magazine covers and gushing newspaper stories of the Obama's, I have yet to hear one alleged journalist ask either Michelle or Barack why they were members of a racist white and America--hating church Trinity UFC for over 20 years. No one stays a member and a supporter of a so-called church unless they totally agree with what's going on--and definitly not for 20 years. The reason I suspect that neither can give a straight and honest answer to so obvious a question is that both Barack and Michelle are white-hating and America-hating racists, have always been white-hating and America-haters, and are still white--hating and America--haters, and only now when Barack needs votes is he and Michelle putting on the tolerant and racial healing mantle to con the white liberal usefull idiots. Also take note that the MSM isn't asking the Obamas this question either because they know that a question like that would throw a monkey wrench into their objective to get this racist white and America--hater elected.

The guy who worked for Cindy’s charity and caught her stealing a million pills wrote this in his journal, at the time: “During my short tenure at AVMT, I have been surrounded by what on the surface appears to be the ultimate all-American family. In reality, I am working for a very sad, lonely woman whose marriage of convenience to a U.S. Senator has driven her to: distance herself from friends; cover feelings of despair with drugs; and replace lonely moments with self-indulgences.”

The McCain's are worth $100's of millions of dollars, they have seven homes, not counting the ones they own oversea's, and Cindy McCain's past not only includes being a drug addict but also a thief. Swiftboating is all the Wingnuts have left but unfortunately for them that dog don't hunt for them anymore...

"I believe she wore red that day. She granted semi-exclusive interviews to one TV station and three daily newspaper reporters in Arizona, tearfully recalling her addiction, which came about after painful back and knee problems and was exacerbated by the stress of the Keating Five banking scandal that had ensnared her husband. To make matters worse, McCain admitted, she had stolen the drugs from the American Voluntary Medical Team, her own charity, and had been investigated by the Drug Enforcement Administration."

Looking forward to the Obamas in the White House. It's great to see a family in that made it on merit rather than family connections.

Name-calling is the hallmark of the paid disinformation troll.

And they certainly are present in great numbers here -- fooling no one.

Have a nice day.

PERSONAL TO matt the blogger (whose work I respect):

You're probably too young to remember all those Life, Look, and Saturday Evening Post covers of Jack and Jackie Kennedy during their 1960 campaign. I was a young lad in those pre-Camelot days, but I can tell you that it is no different today than it was back then.

I disagree with your notion that such stories add little to political discourse. I believe these feature treatments round out the candidates' profiles, providing insight into their humanity and their "offstage" persona.

That interview that the Obama family did with "Access Hollywood" is a perfect example. Barack came off as a really terrific guy, obviously loved and respected by his family. Yet they did not seem one bit intimidated by him, which says much about his good character and his parenting skills.

Now, Obama did seem a bit testy and self-absorbed when he protested to Matt Lauer that he shouldn't have done the interview; it appeared to me that he was uncomfortable being the object of some good-natured on-camera joshing by Michelle and the girls.

That may indicate that Barack is a bit of a navel-gazer, overly concerned about his image. But it doesn't take away from the good vibes that viewers picked up from that segment. It wasn't a mistake to do that showbizzy show; his disarming charm paid political dividends. But his response to Matt Lauer's question also provided some interesting information that helps explain why Obama is viewed as having a "hubris" problem.

Obama's working on it with a higher authority (evidence that Wailing Wall note to God referencing "pride -- another revealing piece of the Obama puzzle.)

So you see, Matt, it's all good -- good for the candidates who are profiled in these lifestyle venues and publications, and good for us, as voters.

Now let me get back to my copy of Star Magazine -- they've got the latest on the John Edwards love child!

Just kidding -- as I was with the earlier, intemperate reference to that Michelle slander that's going around. I didn't mean to engage in what the psy ops guys call "neurolinguistic programming," I was just trying (too hard) to be funny. Sorry about that.

scrivener ... that is the stupidest bs i've read today...with the exception of your equally stupid "column".

Who are you to say what anyone "must do"? You're an idiot!

Someone should remind Michelle Shaniqua Obama that it is considered impolite to chew food with your mouth open. In my view this woman lacks the poise, grace, and good breeding to be First Lady. I saw this image of her eating a pork sandwich and I was aghast at the prospect of her entertaining in the White House. Can you imagine her sitting down to tea with Queen Elizabeth II? Do you think she will hang the god awful african art on the pristine White House walls?

Matt,

It's called free ads. Campaigning costs money and in the grand scheme of things an election is a popularity contest. The one people like the most wins.

This just adds to the unfortunate image of the Obamas as "celebrities" who are out of touch with Americans. Posing on the cover of yet another magazine? Where's the restraint on that...

Guess there won't be too many stories on Cindy McCain... someone might ask her about her four years of drug addiction and how she stole those drugs from a children's charity. Yes, that's what we need in the White House -- junkies.

I normally comment as Eaglechik on other WaPo articles so I am not hiding. Maybe Diane72 is also Janet8 or Aspergirl--maybe---. Anyway I agree that Mrs. Obama would benefit from being presented in more mainstream magazines. People who already have a favorable opinion of her read the magazines she has already been on. Other than "People" I haven't seen any others that featured her. The upcoming Ladies Home Journal is a good start. I agree with the blogger on the Upscale article, it was empty with absolutely nothing original. BTW the picture of her on the upcoming Essence is stunning! Don't overthink it...haters, she just looks very, very nice.

Vitriol, division, hate, fear. The Republicans have nothing to offer.

They conned America years ago with GE spokesman and super salesman, Ronnie Raygun. They even whipped up a legal looking "Contract with America". They promised balanced budgets, no taxes EVER! They tried to convince America that only white evangelical Christians had anyplace here and that everyone else were baby-killers, drug addicts and terrorist lovers out to destroy the moral fabric of our great country.

Well, now we see what we bought. Massive deficits, failing infrastructure, A Federal government so filled with incompetent Party ideologues that it can't function. A corporate culture gone wild with greed.

And all they can do is try to make you scared of a (OMG!) Black America Women, a married lawyer and mother of two.

That's all they've got folks. Sad isn't it.

1. Why would a "war hero" refuse to release his Complete Military Records? What is he hiding? Kerry signed the Form 180 waiver and released all of his records. Old Fart Adulterer Songbird Make it a Hundred Traitor War Criminal McCorrupt refuses to do so. Why?
2. He received numerous demerits at the US Naval Acadamy and graduated 894 out of 899. His 4 star Admiral daddy pulled strings to get him into the Academy. Daddy helped him become a pilot in the Navy despite his despicable record of alcoholism, drug use and womanizing at the academy.

8. Why did the Vietnamese erect a bust in his honor?
9. All Republicans in Congress voted to release government records of POW/MIA on Vietnam, only 1 person blocked it, Old Fart Songbird Traitor McBush. Why did he want those records sealed?
10. Wouldn't the Navy wash his records? His father and grandfather were both 4 star admirals in the Navy.
11. How did he receive medals which required 2 eyewitnesses when there were none?
12. How did he get 28 medals in less than 20 hours of combat? Did his 4 star admiral daddy give him medals he did not deserve? Some grunts fighting on the ground for 7000 hours received no medals
13. He told his captors he was the son of a 4 star Admiral who was the head of Pacific Military Operations to receive special preferential treatment and medical care, violating Military Code of Conduct.
14. There is no evidence he was tortured

19. Immediately, upon returning he started having sexual affairs while still married with 2 kids, gold digging until he snagged rich Cindy whose daddy owned the 2nd largest Budweiser distributorship.
20. Why does he want to stay in Iraq forever? Research his Lobbyists and their clients, especially, Rick Davis and Charle Black.
21. Some Vietnam Vets believe he is the Manchurian Candidate, do some research on that.
22. Why does Old McAdulterer refuse to deny if he committed adultery while married to Cindy. We know he did with Carol, his first wife.
23. Why does Old McWomanizer refuse to deny whether he had sexual relations with Lobbyist Vicki Iseman
24. Why did he oppose the Boeing Air Force Tanker deal in favor of EADS? Did his Campaign Manager, Lobbyist Rick Davis and National Co-Chairman Lobbyist Tom Loeffler (both hired by EADS) affect Old McCorrupt's decison?
25. Did Campaign Manager, Lobbyist Rick Davis client Russian aluminum magnate Oleg Deripaska influence Old McCorrupt after hosting his 70th birthday on his yacht in the Adriatic Sea complete with prostitutes? Deripaska supplies EADS with aluminum and does significant business with Iranians.

Have you ever noticed how it pains Michelle Shaniqua Obama to sound articulate when she speaks? It's almost as if at any moment she will slip back into ghetto-speak and start ranting about "whitey". This is probably what we will see when they release the "whitey" tape in October.

Posted by: Dianne72 | August 7, 2008 12:37 PM | Report abuse

How many white people do you know who read Ebony and Essense? How many politico types read People? Where are the Women's Day, Family Circle, Redbook etc covers? How about a cover on the AARP magazine. After all, after that lovely New Yorker cover, dont you think that the Obamas deserve to be treated like people and not negative cultural econs. All the media claim that people dont know the Obama's, I counter that they will never know them if the political media continues to treat them as highly suspicious characters because they are black and of course because Obama doesnt fit their cookie cutter mold that they only deal with. Maybe its because he is too skinny, when he turns sideways they just cant see him

WHAT'S NEEDED: A BARRY-AND-MICHELLE 'HUMILITY TOUR'

Remember the Billy Joel song, "Angry Young Man"? In the chorus comes the epiphany:

"I believe I've passed the age of consciousness and righteous rage
I found that just surviving was a noble fight.
I once believed in causes too,
I had my pointless point of view,
And life went on no matter who was wrong or right."

The women's mag cover stories help... but Michelle Obama must disavow herself from her image as the "angry young woman" of the New Yorker cover. Like her husband, she has yet to do what the American public demands of would-be leaders who display a certain air of hubris, call it arrogance:

Both of them must publicly acknowledge their false pride, explaining that what appears to some as arrogance really is a vestige of a self-defense mechanism -- an assumed air that helped them cope with a world that too often in the past judged them by the color of their skin rather than by the content of their character (to borrow a phrase).

Michelle came close to doing such a public mea culpa in the wake of her "for the first time in my adult life, I'm proud of my country" gaffe. But she and Barack need to be more precise:

"Yes, at times we were angry, and at times we were hurt. And to deal with those feelings in a society in which we were viewed differently, we developed a thick skin, a toughness that might reasonably have been interpreted as a certain arrogance.

"But we have learned that in today's America, the better angels among us can and do prevail; and we are humbled by the goodness we have found in our shared American dream."

Okay, that's pretty sappy. But maybe that's what the "flyover people" want and need to hear from Barry and Michelle.

Of course, if there really is a "whitey" tape, then it's all over. Let's go with the assumption that's just a vicious rumor.

BUT WILL THE ELECTION EVEN MATTER? NOT WHEN
