It's not easy being (Rory) Reid

Running as a Reid in Nevada this fall may be tough for Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, but it's even harder on Reid's son, Rory.

Reid the younger, who has served as Clark County Commissioner since 2002, is running for governor at the same time that his father is seeking re-election to a fifth term.

In an appearance together over the weekend at the state Democratic convention in Las Vegas, the different challenges facing father and son were on full display.

The elder Reid spoke for nearly 25 minutes, the Las Vegas Review-Journal reports, highlighting the ways in which he's used his clout in Washington to bring jobs, tax breaks and renewable energy projects to Nevada.

Rory Reid, by contrast, addressed the convention for less than 10 minutes and spent the bulk of his speech taking shots at his opponent, former federal judge Brian Sandoval (R).

The downside of running as a Reid in Nevada is obvious: recent polling shows that both Harry and Rory Reid are viewed more unfavorably than favorably by voters in the Silver State.

Fifty-two percent of voters in a recent Law Vegas Review-Journal poll viewed Harry Reid unfavorably while 35 percent viewed him favorably. For Reid's son, the numbers are similar, though the gap is less pronounced: 37 percent had an unfavorable view of him, compared to 29 percent who viewed him favorably.

Add those numbers to that the anti-dynastic element running through the public these days and you begin to grasp the challenge before Reid(s).

Witness Rory Reid's first TV ad, which drew national attention for its omission of the candidate's last name -- taken by many as a sign that his campaign is worried about the impact of his father on the campaign.

Not so, according to Mike Trask, Rory Reid's spokesperson; it's "a pretty common strategy" to refer to a candidate by his or her first name, said Trask, noting that the campaigns of Hillary Clinton, Rudy Giuliani and Mitt Romney all used candidates' first name in many of their materials. Reid's last name is used on his press releases and in several areas on his website, Trask added.

"I don't think that's a sign that we're hiding anything," Trask said, adding that "most people in Nevada that've been voting here know that he's Harry's son."

While Harry Reid can -- and is -- running on his considerable influence in Washington and a record of delivering for his state, that's not a viable option for the younger Reid who is seeking a state-based position.

Both Reids have been running their campaigns largely apart from one another, and their joint appearance over the weekend was a rare one. And, close observers believe it is a near impossibility in a year like this one that both Reids will win.

Harry Reid's challenge is to make the race about former state Assemblywoman Sharron Angle. Rory Reid's challenge is to make the race about anyone other than his father.

Can both of them do it?

Ok, here goes.
Rory "the Racoon" Reid has the disadvantage also of looking like his Daddy. The fear is and should be and should also be closely noted that The Racoon's political philosophy iappears to be that of his Daddys.
This is no young son kinda run at office. This is an older business man. One does not know what entanglements he and daddy have together. I will tell you now there is no or there is little difference in Daddy's Az land deals and Racoon's business dealings out in the back yeard.

Like Father is Son. I do not know if America can withstand both of these thieves in sequence or as a team.
Frankly, Harry seems to have sunk his boy before his boy had a chance to define himself. On the other hand. Perhaps it is better this way.

Phew.

Not all Nevadans want John Ensign to be our senior senator, nor do we want another Republican Governor to follow Gibbons' interpretation of what is best for NV, which has plummeted NV to the bottom of most lists (education, health care, jobs, etc.). Nevada is a small state (population-wise) & to have the power that Senator Reid wields in DC has been, for the most part, good for Nevada & the Nation. I know this is ALL ABOUT RORY, but take a look at Sandoval & his record along with Rory's & what the Republican party has done for NV lately. BTW I do like former Gov. Kenny Gwinn (R) so it's not all about parties.

Obama promised the country during the 2008 campaign that he would not purposely TANK the Afghan War.

He did that because he didn't want to be seen as a crazy leftist who would leave our country open to terrorism.

Sounds like that was ANOTHER OBAMA LIE.

I don't think Obama could have EVER been elected if he said he was going to get out of Afghanistan and leave the place to be run over by terrorists.

This was just one element of trust which the nation put in Obama - TRUST WHICH HAS BEEN BETRAYED.

Obama has done nothing but deceive and lie.

It is a disgrace - OBAMA IS A FRAUD.

Sorry - but there are just some things about Obama which he ASSURED the nation during the campaign - ASSURANCES that Obama knew without which he would not be elected.

Those are the acceptable parameters of what it means to run this country - there is an acceptable range of action.

TANKING A WAR ON PURPOSE is out of bounds.

Obama is a FRAUD.

Chris,

What is the point? Are you just reading emails from Republican operatives or are you doing original thinking? Please tell me it is the former.

The limits of the liberal idealogy have been exposed.

The bankruptcy of all the liberal idea is being exposed - it is driving up the Federal deficit and the deficits in most of the States.

Clearly, the American public wants wise economic policy to be behind government policies - not a blind hurling toward massive government programs which will only raise the debt - with dubious benefits coming from expensive wasteful programs.

The leftists cant even a perform an oil rig safety inspection correctly - like they said they would do.

You want them to run every hospital, every doctor's office, every medical company in the country ??? That is complete insanity.

The Washington Post reports that Obama's remarks "tempered the Group of 20's headline achievement at the summit, a deficit-reduction target that had been pushed by Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper, the host of the meeting and a fiscal conservative."

Obama is wholly impervious to the historical record documenting the failure of FDR's pump priming during the Depression, which exacerbated rather than ameliorated the economic problems. He is similarly detached from reality concerning the failure of his own policies to stimulate growth of any kind to save his beloved public sector and thus recommends more of the same.

In speech after speech, he takes credit for having launched an economic recovery in the United States and for achieving job growth. Notwithstanding his economic models that stubbornly predict such results, he can point to no empirical evidence to verify his delusional boasts.

It would be bad enough if his economic policies were simply retarding our economic recovery, but they are also accelerating our trip to national bankruptcy. Yet Obama continues to press forward with his foot smashed down on the gas pedal.

Why is it that liberals have to deny their very nature to even stand a chance of getting elected?

Yeah, if you're Harry Reid's son, you got a very creepy father!

He should change his last name to Calhoon.

That's got a nice ring to it.

Dirty Harry should be deported as an undesirable.

The democrats do not want to talk about how the leftist environmental agenda diverted oil drilling from the frozen wasteland of ANWAR to the Gulf of Mexico.

The democrats rather blame someone else.

The democrats do not want to talk about the role the democrats in Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac - how the democrats let the mortgage market run wild - leading to the economic crisis.

The democrats rather blame someone else.

The democrats do not want to talk about Bill Clinton repealing the Glass Steagall Act - leading ot the economic crisis.

They rather blame someone else.

The democrats do not want to talk about how Obama's people did not perform the safety inspections on the oil rigs properly - as Obama SAID in several speeches would be don.

The democrats rather blame someone else.

Is there a pattern here ???

The democrats - and Obma's people - have been AT THE CENTER OF THESE MAJOR DISASTERS -

And they want to blame someone else.

The democrats do not want to take responsibility for anything - they want to run for office, make the decisions, but taking responsibility - they will not do that.

America deserves better. So much more. America deserves much better.

Rory Reid wouldn't be in the position he is today without the name Reid.

So, there have developed some negatives to his name now.

On a net basis, Rory has benefitted far more from his name, than the negatives discount.

So, who is crying for Rory ?
