Ed Case opts out of Hawaii race

Former Hawaii Rep. Ed Case (D) announced Sunday night that he will not be a candidate for the 1st district seat he had run for in a special election earlier this month.

"My heart tells me to stay in this fight," Case wrote in an e-mail to supporters. "But my head says this has become the wrong fight." He added that "the question is not whether but when, where and how I can best continue to serve, and I know that path will emerge in its own time."

Rep. Charles Djou (R) won the May 22 special election for the seat of former Rep. Neil Abercrombie (D) who resigned to focus on running for governor full time. State Sen. Colleen Hanabusa's (D) took 31 percent while Case finished third with 28 percent. All three candidates appeared on the same ballot due to Hawaii special election law.

Case's announcement clears the way for Hanabusa be the party's nominee against Djou. In the special election she had the support of Sens. Daniel Inouye and Daniel Akaka as well as much of the Hawaii political establishment. Case had burned bridges to that crowd following his 2006 primary challenge to Akaka.

In a statement, Hanabusa called Case's decision a "most magnanimous gesture."

Mr. Obama is not the first president to be away from Washington on a patriotic holiday.

The critics were either ignorant of the facts or they failed to mention the 2007 Veterans Day ceremony when Vice President Dick Cheney spoke while President George W. Bush observed the holiday in Texas.

Vice President Dan Quayle laid the wreath at Arlington on Memorial Day, 1992. President George H.W. Bush, a distinguished World War II vet, marked the holiday that year at his favorite vacation spot, Kennebunkport, Maine, where he spoke to a veterans group.

Back in 1983, a Defense Department official laid the Memorial Day wreath at Arlington when Ronald Reagan was at a G-7 Summit meeting in Williamsburg, Virginia.

This is far from a complete list, but presidents have been at places other than Arlington on Memorial Day.

The democrats all know that Obama deserves the same treatment as Bush - the same non-stop daily 24/7 media barrage - just like they gave Bush.

The MAJOR PROBLEM THEY HAVE IS THEY CAN'T CALL THE OIL WELL A RACIST.

That was always their last resort -

Like trying to turn the health care TAX INCREASE and TRILLION DOLLAR SPENDING PLAN into some civil rights crusade - linking arms and going through the crowd - trying to spark an incident.

The democrats are hypocrites.

The least they could do is CALL FOR OBAMA TO RESIGN - AND START THE NATIONAL HEALING.

You can not be serious.

OK and the democrats tried to turn a humanitarian effort into a racial incident too.

Just for giggles imagine if Bush were president when this was going on .. the same trolls who fill this place with verbal vomit would be sneering at how a little spilled oil doesn't matter, that people who care about wildlife have messed up priorities, that environmentalists are whackos, that a fisheries livelihood has ups and downs and the ruined business owners should "quit whinig,"...

... and what a great job Bush was doing by paying no attention, showing true leadership by yucking it up at some country music shindig like he did while people in NOLA were climbing on top of cars to keep from drowning.

You should go back and listen to Obama's speech when he said he was in support of EXPANDED OFFSHORE DRILLING - it was a self-congratulatory hell- all he did was praise himself about how smart he was - and how he was going to show the way to the whole country - BECAUSE HE IS SO SMART.

Well, your Harvard law review guy FORGOT ABOUT SAFETY - and environmental oil spill response.

You have to understand - Obama filled the administration with affirmative action appointees - they don't know what they are doing under normal conditions.

This is a crisis.

In a crisis, these people REALLY have no idea what they are doing - they certainly are not looking to take on more responsibility.

Obama himself is way over his head.

Obama can not handle the job - it is just that simple - making speeches which all include the word UNPRECEDENTED is nothing but a non-stop ego trip - it is not governing.

Salazar himself is the main corrupt staffer. He approved the BP permit for the well in question and supplied, directly or indirectly, the necessary waivers.

But you are correct that the relevant agencies are not restaffed when administrations change. They are staffed mostly by career civil servants. They were not restaffed when Bush came into office either.

I don't think there's much truth to the charge that deregulation increased after Bush took over from Clinton; if anything, the opposite may have been true. The dirty little secret is that regulations and oversight don't matter if someone isn't actually going to do the oversight and enforce the regulations. Lax enforcement is and always has been the problem. The oil companies have lots of money and they don't like being pushed around and told what to do---by Obama, Bush, or any of those who preceded them.

10 MAY 2010: ANALYSIS
From Yale University- The story of the MMS

The Gulf of Mexico Oil Spill:
An Accident Waiting to Happen
The oil slick spreading across the Gulf of Mexico has shattered the notion that offshore drilling had become safe. A close look at the accident shows that lax federal oversight, complacency by BP and the other companies involved, and the complexities of drilling a mile deep all combined to create the perfect environmental storm.
by john mcquaid-

The evidence shows MMS has not taken an aggressive stance policing offshore drilling. Based on experience with malfunctioning blowout preventers, for instance, the MMS did suggest that energy companies install backup devices for triggering them. But it was only a suggestion, not a requirement, and U.S. drilling operators have declined to do so.

Critics question whether the agency possesses the independence or the power to effectively tackle these issues post-spill. One sign of trouble: The MMS is a major player in investigating the spill and in the Outer Continental Shelf Oversight Board set up by Interior Secretary Ken Salazar to examine the broader safety issues the accident raises.

“MMS is the regulator, and regulatory failure is a part of this,” Hopkins said. “It’s going to be investigating itself. It’s totally inappropriate.”

As for the HuffPo, the only reference I could find to corrupt hirings is

"Obama said a too-comfortable relationship between industry and government didn't change when he came into office.

Interior Secretary Ken Salazar "came in and started cleaning house. But the culture had not fully changed at MMS. And surely I take responsibility for that.""

The democrats on this blog are having a really difficult time recognizing reality: Obama IS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE OIL SPILL.

And we hear all sorts of different approaches - but the democrats are all trying to find a way out of that central reality.

Maureen Dowd - a LIBERAL COLUMNIST FOR THE NEW YORK TIMES - has a new take - She says that Obama's reluctance to take responsibility is related to his lack of having a father growing up.

WOW- what a low blow - and really racist.

However - the democrats are beginning to say that the GULF OIL CRISIS IS RELATED TO SOME CHARACTER FLAW THAT OBAMA HAS.

If the democrats did not elect Obama, those safety proceedures would have been in place - no oil spill.

It is clear that Obama and his appointees ARE DIRECTLY RESPONSIBLE FOR THE OIL SPILL

The democrats are REALLY REALLY RELUCTANT TO ADMIT THAT TO THEMSELVES, MUCH LESS TYPE THOSE WORDS ON THIS BLOG.

Time and time again Kirk has claimed the unearned glory of a veteran of two wars and the exalted status of a combat veteran of another. I look forward to the day this fall when Mark Kirk is relegated to the trash heap of Illinois politics, like Jack Ryan and Jim Oberweis.

http://blogs.alternet.org/speakeasy/2010/05/13/shocker-gop-blocks-effort-to-hold-oil-companies-accountable-for-economic-damage-from-spills/

The twisted "argument" that the Repugs are using to defend their Big Oil overlords is that if they lift the liability cap "Ma & Pa Oil companies" won't be able to afford to drill for oil........Which begs the questions - if "Ma & Pa Oil" can't afford to clean up a massive oil spill that they might create, why are they drilling for oil in the first place.

You see, that's the problem. The Repugs want Big Oil to have the benefit of Corporate Socialism, where they get all of the profits and the tax payers get stuck paying for their risk (oil spills).

Just when I was going to give 37th credit for at least tailoring a short term solution to a short term problem, he comes up with this:

Aftermath could last a decade. Send the fisherman to Africa to fish. They've got a lot of fish there.

I will say this. At least that solves the "relocation to where?" problem. Congratulations--I don't know HOW long it would have taken anyone else to come up with this innovative solution.

I know, they all can jump into their fishing boats and motor over to Africa. That way they'll won't have to buy boats. It's been done, sort of in a smaller way, you know, like Dunkirk.

Putting aside stopping the gusher, the aftermath seems to be breaking down on two tracks: T

those who believe that the problem is a short term (this year and next) and

those who believe it is long term (decades).

Short term solutions are much easier, cheaper, and do not involve long term government programs. BP (or the government) can easily front end the funding. BP can afford the damages.

Long term solutions are extremely difficult. As shrink says, retraining for what? Relocation for where? Probably beyond BP's entire resources.

Seems to me some sort of consensus about the scope of the problems is needed.

Sounds promising. Still, very expensive. This new program, let's call it the Gulf Economic Plan, would set up a fund to which the individuals in the targeted communities and industries could apply. For tuition, retraining, relocation, low interest loans to start new businesses. I'm just brainstorming here.

The program necessarily would last for years. Seems like, in the end, the population would have to move away from the Gulf, to some extent. Or attract new industry to the Gulf.

We can send the re-trainers to the Gulf region - there is no need to displace people from their homes.

What the fishermen need is CHECKS - right away - EQUAL TO what they were making last year.

The fishing companies need to get checks equal to their catch - minus the salaries which are paid directly to the fishermen.

Everyone still has bills - mortgages - and the local stores and local support facilities have to be compensated according to their losses.

It should be pretty easy to figure out an estimated total - just find the total value of all the fish caught last year.

If you keep everyone in place until the oil is taken care of - then you minimize the disruption to the local economy - for instance if the fishermen are all getting their normal pay, all the businesses they patronize should be OK because those fishermen would still go there.

This is doable - but it is not like you are talking - these people can not abandon all their houses and all the plant and equipment - they have to ride out the storm.

Retraining for what jobs?
After forestry collapsed in the PacNW,
millions were wasted trying to retrain the loggers for jobs that did not exist, they did not want, or that did not want them.

No, relocation and reeducation is too creepy, like Stalin.

The communities must be allowed to decide what to make of themselves, whether to stay or go, or go back to school and we should support any of those options (except for endless unemployment benefits). It would be more like a GI bill for workers whose livelihood depended on clean sea water, but structured and targeted by communities and industries.

Hope turns into optimism which turns into confidence which allows people to enter the action phase in the stages of change. We have to start now! to prevent the hopeless, helpless, yet entitled, angry victim mindset from overwhelming the area.

WE NEED THE CORPORATE DEATH PENALTY FOR BP

All of BP's stock should be transferred to a government trust to pay all the victims - and the rest of the value, if any, should be a fine.

What form should federal economic aid take? It seems to me that the fishing industry is out of business, for years to come. Those people should get help relocating to other places, retraining into other industries. That would be a start. But, it would be extremely expensive. Maybe in the trillions to really help the hundreds of thousands of people.

We should all be aware that BP's current value is 134 billion dollars. Now, there probably is additional dollars in insurance and reinsurance. But their entire company may not be enough to pay for the damage done.

Posted by: 12BarBlues | May 31, 2010 1:55 PM | Report abuse

BP is saying the "temporary" increase in flow will be up to 20% when the riser comes off.

I can not believe that. Just look at the pressure behind the oil coming out of those cracks. They think their pressure gauges suggest one or more of the BOP rams are partially closed, which is the basis for the 20% increase estimate I guess. But if they were, the junk shot should have worked and or the mud should not have gone everywhere but down the well (it was injected below the rams).

There are other blogs, list serves actually, out there where the engineers are less sanguine than those on the UC website.
I can't give you a URL because they are circles of friends. As we know, this has happened twice before, just a few months ago in the Timor Sea and years ago, Ixtoc.

One guy who worked on stopping the Ixtoc (like the one above Australia, they never did until the relief well was dug) said they tried top kill, junk etc. and nothing worked and that was in about 200 feet of water.

Yeah, I'd say the situation looks worse than it did to us over a month ago and we were getting Cassandred then.

The only difference is now everyone seems to be getting the picture. BP's Hayward was either lying or grotesquely incompetent to declare eventual environmental damage, in the company's estimation to be very, very, modest back on May 19th.

Well one of the most prominent examples of this has been the MINERALS MANAGEMENT SERVICE - it was featured prominently in this newspaper and in the national media for years - IF OBAMA DID NOT ADDRESS THAT - IT WAS "BUSINESS AS USUAL FOR OBAMA"

That is the problem.

Take the health care bill - Obama made so many DEALS WITH SPECIAL INTERESTS - IT BECAME A SPECIAL INTERESTS BILL OF RIGHTS - NOT A PATIENT BILL OF RIGHTS.

This is a complete joke.

OR cutting the riser might not make much difference over all

There is a certain amount of oil coming out of the sea floor - fueled by a certain amount of pressure.

That pressure will find an outlet - if there are more outlets the pressure will be distributed over the outlets -

There may not be much additional oil coming out of the ground.

Worried the unrestricted flow that happens when that riser falls apart, as they cut through it will leak more oil in a few days than the restricted flow will over the next two months.

And, if they cut the riser, they have to succeed in dropping something over it that restricts the flow at least as much as the current rate. There is no guarantee, not even a quantifiable chance of success. The whole volume of the reservoir coming up before the relief wells get there is, well, unthinkable.

So I am figuring their pressure differential readings are telling them the bent riser is already in the process of failing, there at he crimp. Otherwise they would never take the chance of cutting into it. They must figure an uncontrolled failure will be less manageable than the one they produce. Hmmmm.

Barboy- 1550 feet eh? Outside the Submarine eh? Screen doors on a submarine will be soon called Obamadoors, as the Louisiana Gulf Coast will be forever named the Obamacoast- I hear the Louisiana legislature is already drafting the bill!

Can you believe our President is allowing a British company protect his country?

I can't !!!
Treason is the term I believe.

He spent SO much money on healthcare reform...I guess there's none left to protect the poor people of the Gulf Coast!

SO, we're OUTSOURCING to the Brits!
Let's fix it and get reimbursed later!

Barboy- You Get REAL- you are supporting an administration that approved a defective well, staffed a corrupt agency that "oversees it", and has their collective thumbs up their collective derrieres, while a foreign company- the UK's largest corporation- is staging a fire drill, while our fisherman starve and our gulf coast, florida keys, and soon the Virginia shore are in peril!

From your switch to a political attack, I guess you can't defend your brilliant technical ideas. First, I do not defend this administration or the last one. Ineffective and/or inattention to safety is what got us here. I am totally supportive to the Gulf folks, and I think BP should pay for everything, even if it takes them bankrupt.

I'm just pointing out to you that your technical ideas have either been tried (heavy object) or not effective (sending down another "eye" to the ocean floor).

Let me guess, cannula is all for more drilling. .. strangely, most of those criticizing Obama are.

@thecannula,

I repeat:

Try this: put your garden hose on your lawn, full force. Then, without touching it with your hands, try to cover it with something to stop the water. Try plugging it up with something. See what you come up with. You think that dropping heavy objects from your waist would stop the water?

The problem is that what CAN go down to the leak can only manipulate (use tools) on the problem. So the solution necessarily has to be attaching piping from the surface--either to push something into the well to plug it up, or to draw the oil to the surface to be taken away. Numerous attempts have been made to do both.

As are millions watching that puny little saw this morning, clumsily maneuvering around the top of the BOP, I wonder about whether trying to cut off that riser is a good idea. As soon as they breach it, visibility is going to be history, and there will be hours of cutting left to do. Now the leak plumes are shooting straight up or away down the bent section, but when the leaks fire out sideways at the saw cut, its going to be lights out.

And their ability to manipulate outside their vehicle?

Get real. They have ROV's down there now, and could put more ROV's down there if there was something for them to do. Get this picture: the pipe down to the oil is something like 30" diameter. There's a BOP on top. That's it. That's what there is to work with.

After 128BarBlues visited his 127th Bar, he forgot how to Google-

"A small submarine, the bathyscape Trieste, made it to 10,916 meters (35,813 feet) below sea level in the deepest point in the ocean, the Challenger Deep in the Marianas Trench, a few hundred miles east of the Philippines. This part of the ocean is 11,034 m (36,200 ft) deep, so it seems that a submarine can make it as deep as it's theoretically possible to go. The water pressure at this depth is over 1000 atmospheres. Life does exist here, as well as a carpet of diatomaceous material that covers all the ocean floors of the world.

Trieste was manned by two people and funded by the United States Navy."

Hey Mr. President-
Are you commander in chief?
Over the Navy too?
Still funding and staffing SUBMARINES?
Do you think it's worth a few million funding an attempt at using them to close this leak?
Want to try sinking a few dozen barges full of really heavy, large objects over it?
No....I guess this weekend is better spent in Chicago "Brainstorming" over SESTAKgate while our environment goes to hell over a leaking deep sea well approved by your inept administration!

1. Submarines don't go much below 1500 ft down. This gusher is 5000 ft down.

2. Dropping barges over the leak has already been tried. You know, the cofferdam, which weighed 100 tons, was dropped over the leak. The hydrates built up and started to lift the cofferdam above the seafloor, and the oil leaked up from the bottom. The leak is in the ocean--it goes out whichever way it can. You think that barges would create a total containment? Surely you jest.

Try this: put your garden hose on your lawn, full force. Then, without touching it with your hands, try to cover it with something to stop the water. Try plugging it up with something. See what you come up with.

No one offered Case anything. He came in third in a primary, so would, in effect, have no shot at winning the runoff. Pure politics, but some here don't understand that. I mean, shouldn't giuliani and romney have stayed in the race against McCain until November? That's the logic some seem to espouse here. If you are not going to win, why waste time and money and divide the party just to sauve you ego? Hope the new repub congressman doesn't make any long-term plan to move to DC. He won with 60,000 votes while the top two Dems split 100,000. Do the math.

Interesting. There are still deadenders out there trying to delegitimize PRESIDENT Obama by continuing to raise this laughable, silly notion that he is not an American citizen. Of course this is a thoroughly familiar fundamentalist mindset. They must not give on any one single precept otherwise their carefully contrived house of cards comes crashing down.

There are still hangers-on who will insist that the Moon landing was staged, that the earth is no more than 10,000 years old, that Vince Foster was murdered by the Clintons, that JFK was murdered by the CIA or LBJ or the Mob or Fidel Castro, and that the government has squirreled away an Alien spacecraft in a secret hanger in Area 51 and continues to develop hi tech gagetry from it.

Anyone who spends anytime trying to present any evidence to refute such idiocy is wasting their time and risking becoming a card carrying member of the One World conspiracy.

man, if it comes down to gains of 5 and 15 for Republicans, some heads have got to roll. That's a huge opportunity wasted for them. I imagine Dems more than make up for that in 2010.

Scratch one GOP seat gain in Nov. Case can now work for the opponents campaign locking in overall voter support and the next run. With no litmus test the Dems will do far better in Nov. than they otherwise would having seen as unacceptable Tea Party candidate positions. Rand Paul self destructing could lose, Rubio cutting social security/medicare in FL having the the highest % of seniors will lose to Crist (where does he caucus), the seen as discriminatory GOP hispanic position, the Ryan alternative to health care (same being destroyed by Obama in his house debate), no heavy push against abortion leaving the GOP religious base home, all bodes poorly for the GOP in Nov. The Dems made a mistake in pushing the don't ask, don't tell repeal in the defense bill, possibly mobilizing the biased religious base. I see a 5 seat gain in the Senate and about 15 in the House for the GOP, nothing to change the Dem. control of congress.

Dear 37thand0street;

"Would the Hawaii Dept of Health mark on Obama's birth certificate that Obama was "adopted" by his Indonesian father - and therefore became an Indonesian citizen?"

The birth certificate is not like a passport that gets updated. Nor do they in general record citizenship.

Do you gave any evidence that Obama's mother renounced her citizenship at any point? Can you point to any case law saying that a natural born US citizen looses that citizenship if adopted?

You mind is made up - no one will persuade you differently - but could you show enough respect to at least make a plausible argument?

So, when the Democrat wins back this seat in 2012, will that be evidence of a Democratic tidal wave? Just trying to get a jump-start on the media narrative. Like, will Scott Brown's frequent votes with Obama further prove how potent the Tea Party is? It's so hard to foresee how the media will find it most profitable to interpret fairly obvious points . . .

Is that what Obama is hiding ???

There are questions out there - and the country deserves to have Obama waive his rights - AND OPEN THE FILES. It is that simple.

Because Obama reached maturity before the divorce of his parents - Obama could have remained an Indonesian citizen.

These QUESTIONS should be answered fully - AND the documents and files SHOULD be opened up.
