Limbaugh An Issue in New York Special

Democrats are seeking to use conservative talk-radio host Rush Limbaugh to rally their base in advance of next week's special election in New York's 20th district.

Murphy Campaign Mailer
Scott Murphy's new campaign mailer draws Rush Limbaugh into the Ny-20 special election. View full image.

A new direct mail piece from businessman Scott Murphy's campaign features an angry shot of Limbaugh over the words "I hope Obama fails." At the bottom of the piece in parentheses is written "Somebody wants you to stay home on March 31st...."

On the back of the mailer, an Obama drawing is featured with text superimposed over it that accuses "Rush Limbaugh and his lackeys in Washington" of trying to "be a roadblock to the change America desperately needs."

Democrats have been using Limbaugh's comments -- made at his keynote address at the Conservative Political Action Conference last month -- to raise money almost since the moment they were made but using Limbaugh as a turnout tool is a new wrinkle in this strategy.

A series of public polls suggest Limbaugh is a broadly disliked figure among Democratic base voters (no surprise there) but it remains to be seen whether that disdain will translate into a desire to turn out on a random Tuesday in March to cast a vote against a Republican House candidate.

In 2006 and again in 2008, House and Senate Democratic candidate effectively used George W. Bush as the bogeyman who scared their base into action. But, Bush was the president of the United States not a conservative talk-radio host.

The mailer provides an interesting window into a broader Democratic strategy to demonize Limbaugh for political gain. Will it work next Tuesday?

To think that anything has "changed" in DC
is to delude yourself. Obama was elected
by the viewers of SNL and Letterman. While
I have observed the intellectually lazy
let others do their thinking for them for
many years, this is a new high in the "dumbing-down" of the US. The Pres can
only sign or veto what gets to his desk.
Common sense(uncommon today) tells us that
we cannot spend our way to wealth, that peace is not negotiated or morals be legislated. Stop pointing fingers, trading insults and think and act for yourselves.

Rush is a terrible spokesperson for conservatism. With his disinformation, hypocrisy, double standards and ad hominen attacks, he drives many to the Dems.

Rush gives red meat to the base, but as recent elections have shown he does not expand it. After 20 years of Rush et al, the GOP is in worse shape than ever.

Fortunately, many Americans are not as enthralled with the inflammatory, divisive style of rightwing talkers as are so called "conservatives".

From Bjorn3: Socialized medicine is a big one. Since when should government decide if and when I should be able to have for example a MRI exam?

Stop and think a minute. Your healthcare provider or if you are one of the 40-some M people without healthcare your wallet decides whether you will get an MRI or not. Unless you are independently wealthy you are not free here in the USA today to make your own healthcare decisions.

So this is the latest budget news:
1) GOP House leaders hold a press conference to unveil their budget;
2) They distribute an 18 page document full of political rhetoric, but void of an actual budget or even a budget outline;
3) When reporters question Minority Leader John Boehner about the absence of a budget he sarcastically responds: “Wait and see next week.”

Why in heaven's name would Mr. Boehner and the GOP leadership humiliate themselves and their party by calling a press conference to unveil their budget--then show up without a budget?

I think the translation of the acronym GOP these days is Gang Of Pinheads

Since the WH has made Rush such an item. Why is it that the story about Rahm Emanuels pay of 320,000 for 14 months pay at Freddie Mac gets no play? It's an old one but the chicago tribune has printed it. Whats up with the break away from lib media? Will congress try to tax it at 90% or should Barney,Chris Dodd or thug Cuomo expose his family to death threats?

To all the Lefties who talking endlessly about the "poor" and all these other supposedly "helpless people" Obama (and every other communist/socialist dictator) supposedly "fights" for in the name of "justice." Please, tell me, what's stopping these supposedly "helpless" people from making $100,000, $250,000, or $5 million? I'd really love to know. Do you think they are inferior and are inherently incapable of making decisions that will increase their standard of living or salaries? Are they unable to sacrifice early in life in order to prosper later in life? 90% of those making over $100,000 started out unemployed when they graduated high school. If someone piles up loans and spends 10 years in college, medical school, and internship and learns skills that require tremendous hard work and dedication, why should they not be rewarded for their efforts? It's called incentive. And without it wealth and jobs decline for everyone. This country was founded on the "pursuit of happiness" - not the guarantee of it and definitely not a nanny-state that uses personal prejudices to determine who should be making how much and to punish and steal - yes steal, after all it is their money - from those who have succeed through hard work, sacrifice, and risk-taking. The beauty of America is that the poorest person can prosper beyond their wildest dreams and that someone who has gained wealth can loose it if they make bad decisions. America was based on individualism - not some collective bee-hive mentality. And there seems to be this perception that those with high salaries horde it in their mattress. No, they buy things that helps businesses profit and hire people. They invest and provide capital to companies they think will succeed. They buy government bonds and help local, state, and federal bodies finance infrastructure. Taxes beyond 20% stifle innovation, growth, spending, risk-taking and allows politically agenda-driven politicians and bureaucrats to waste money on things they arbitrarily think are good and "fair" for society - ending up in pork, waste, and corruption and the collapses of governments and economies like those in California, New York, and Michigan - paragons of the Soviet Union and every Third World communist "people's government." Why can't you Lefties rely on your mind and rationality just one iota more than your knee-jerk emotions?

Oh, and I love how every Leftie leaves out the word "illegal" when talking about the illegal immigrant issue. Please name one person or politician is "demonizing" or speaking out against legal immigrants. Can you at least pretend to have one shred of intellectual honesty?

I also hope the Obama Administration's attempts to socialize our economy fail. So far I see nothing in what he wants to do as beneficial to me and my family. Four and out!
The waters are not receding, as he said they would. In fact, the piles of manure that are his attempted Administration appointments continue to rise. He's a campaigner who was always on the lookout for his next job opportunity. Now he's risen to the ultimate Political job. So, even if he feels constrained by the White House, it's what he wished for and wanted. Now he needs to perform and protect the USA from all foreign and domestic enemies.
Four and Out! Term limits on Congress!

Beyond the fact that Obama is proposing no such thing, does it not bother you that the very thing is happening today, only big business in the form of a HMOs instead of the government is making that decision over the advice of your doctors? You really think letting the market decide whether or not it would be profitable to let you live or die is a better solution than the government, who is ultimately accountable to the people, making such a decision?

Rush Limbaugh daily discredits himself and the Republican party with his jealous crazed rants and distortions.. The intelligent people in his audience recognize him for what he is, a drug-addled uneducated windbag. Women, who have a tendancy to discern dishonest men faster than men do, especially hate him and his daily spew of hatred and bigoted slant. What better symbol of the Republican party could Mr. Murphy find to run against.??? Certainly the Straw man who is running against him has no record of achievement. His only advantage was being a Republican in a Republican majority district. I think the strategy was beautiful. Limbaugh is more destructive of the Republican party than he realizes. Limbaugh basically represents ONE-ISSUE types in the republican party and that splits the party .
A beautiful strategy by Murphy to pin the tail on the donk---ephant.

Demonizing private citizens for receiving legitimate employment bonuses (AIG), forcing me to subsidize another mans mortgage.... The list is long my friend. "

Bjorn, the Obama administration hasn't proposed 'socialized medicine'. What they have proposed are a variety of measures by which gov't can fill the gap that the free market has not. The primary goal is to address the astronomical rate of growth of healthcare costs - which are holding down wages (as employers spend more on benefits, less money is available for pay), driving up entitlement costs (i.e. medicare/medicaid), and sending people to bankruptcy. When the private market fails to act, the gov't has to step in. That's not socialism, that's taking care of the problems left unsolved by private enterprise.

Nationalizing banks is likewise cleaning up the mess created by private enterprise. The goal is not long-term control of the banks, but to ensure that the banking system continues to function despite undervaluing risk and overextending credit. Regarding industry, where's the 'socialization'? Loans have been extended to the auto industry, which is hardly tantamount to gov't control of the means of production.

Regarding the AIG bonuses, the Obama administration is not primarily to blame for '[d]emonizing private citizens for receiving legitimate employment bonuses' - that award goes to the whole gamut of elected officials from both parties.

In short, your 'long list' is riddled with inaccuracies, exagerations and ignorance.

The problem with health care is that it is FOR PROFIT. We need to remove the profit motive. We need to control the distribution. And we need salary control.

Socialized medicine is a great thing. We need it, and we need it now. Of course, many countries have a hybrid system. The main system is socialized, and if you want alternatives, you pay for them. That would be good.

What would be wonderful is the extend Medicare 1 year down, and 1 year up, for the next 30 years. that would phase it in, and give all of those useless morons running insurance companies the chance to find useful and productive careers.

While the Socialist and Communist Obama supporters here--who laughably all call themselves 'liberals' and 'progressives' to cover up what they really are--are putting their Democrap Socialist Parties agenda to enslave the American people to fruition, Rush and we real Americans want those plans to fail because we're putting our countries interests above our parties. What Marxist Obama and the Democrap Socialists want to do in America is what Hugo Chavez is doing in Venezuela, what Fidel Castro did in Cuba, and what is now going on in that workers paradise's of North Korea and a few other places like that around the world. Every real American, that believes in our Constitution and Bill of Rights, should want Bozo Obama's Marxist agenda to fail. The rest are too stupit to have learned from history.

a) Not everyone is, and

b) Those who are, refuse to pay taxes. Instead, they hire Limbaugh to fool the stupid people into voting for leaders who borrow what should be tax money from other countries instead.

This is identical to a situation where the rich pay taxes like everybody else, but take billions and billions from the Chinese then inform them that if they want it paid back, to tell it to the US Treasury.

Yes it IS possible for everyone to be educated, healthy, wealthy, and wise; but that's not scheduled to happen until the 23rd century.

An overwhelming majority of Americans, historians, and economic data also says he was effective (not to mention FOUR TERMS).

"Junior is way over his head and despite the press, word is out."

Despite the press, and the polls, and the stock market....

thommorin says: "Everyone that makes a comment negative of Rush Limbaugh's statement fails to recognize that when George Bush was elected to his frist term every Democrat in Washington publically stated that they hoped that he would fail." Does he really believe that? Repub looniness rolls on.

Limbaugh and Palin have made themselves into fundraising gold for Democrats.

Everyone that makes a comment negative of Rush Limbaugh's statement fails to recognize that when George Bush was elected to his frist term every Democrat in Washington publically stated that they hoped that he would fail.
They were pissed off about Al Gore 's loss.
So if the Democrats can say it, why can't the GREAT RUSHDI.

Rush Limbaugh needs to do a better job of regulating the flow into and out of his "pie hole". Whenever he opens his mouth, either mass quantities of apple pie are crammed in, or mass quantities of cow pie spew out.

Actually if Rush Limbaugh would allocate his time to more positive attributes to influence this country and tune down on such conflicting and negativity then he could well be a more influential individual to our country. He is so demeaning in his content on the airwaves. I listens to him periodically, but his message is never positive or truthful nor in the best interest of the reality of our country in my opinion. We have enough problems to combat already and to continually add to them is of no value at this time and point for our country. It is people like him that will become extinct because the generation of today have no tolerance for such ignorance.

Rush Limbaugh is only a controversial figure whom attracts the less educated individuals whom can’t add 1+1. I can’t see how our country would waste time on such a misfit. He’s beneath reality, rhyme or reason. It should be a law against his lies channeled to the American public, his airwaves need to be shutdown. He shows no respect for the truth of our country. Yet in these trying times, I am not surprised to see how low one would stoop. It is the backfires of such ignorant moves that effects the innocent as well. So until America unite, come on one accord and do the right thing to forward a better tomorrow for all, such low tactics as those of Limbaugh and the crew will only forward a masquerade of problematic ills once again. God Bless America!

Zouk - Why are you so angry? It's not healthy. Relax, your side lost - overwhelmingly. The sooner you move on the better.

Oh we already have by pointing out
the incompetence of Bush,
the incompetence of Cheney,
the incompetence of Brownie,
the incompetence of Rumsfeld,
the incompetence of Rice,
the incompetence of McCain,
the incompetence of Palin,
etc, etc, etc...

That is why Obama is president and both houses of Congress are in the democrats hands. No one is calling Obama incompetent. Isn't it refreshing to listen to a president speak and not end up laughing at what he says, or groaning? Quite refreshing I must say!

Hey, zuke, if I'm a "lib," what does that make you?

Posted by: mattintx | March 25, 2009 6:49 PM | Report abuse

Fred Thompson just came out and said he hope Obama's policies fail too. I guess I just don't understand how that is constructive at all. We want this nation to succeed and to turn around the crises we are now facing but these people saying they want the President to fail seem to only be thinking of their personal and party interests. Success should be the goal, not success only on the terms Rush and Thompson want it on.

even AP has figured out what a sham the Obama budget is. If they can figure it out, how long before the rest of you mindless libs see the light?

Oh I keep forgetting. You all still believe FDR was somehow effective and jimmah was brilliant. Could be a while.

Cilizza is a Reopublican! certainly he thinks like one. demonizing is what Republicans do. Try gays, immigrants, poor people etc... you get the idea. Cilizza is trying to demonize the Dems for daring to respond to Limbaugh. Limbaigh is the leader of the Repubs, isnt he?
Cilizza, stop being so rightiously indignant only to Dems! Your roots are showing. Stop being so blatently Republican.

The word is spelled "incompetence", and your second sentence requires a period. Any competent psychoblogger would know that.

What's the difference between Rush (very aptly named) Limbaugh and 300 pounds of elephant manure? A tacky sportcoat.

Obama is trying to disestablish the politics of Plutocracy - government by the wealthy. He is trying to reestablish government by the people. That is what we are seeing when he does not accept contributions from lobbyists and PACs, when he warns CEOs about golden parachutes, and when he engages his grassroots support base for help in getting those on Congress to support his policies and plans.

The Reagan admnistration grew the Plutocracy and allowed them unthered access to government. In 1953 there were 27,000 millionaires, in 1964 90,000 millionaires, in 1972 180,000, in 1980 574,000, and in 1988 1.3 million. Now we are paying the consequences. The rich want to control government programs and policies to their own personal benefit and not to the benefit of the majority of Americans. Rush is among the wealthy Plutocrats, so of course he wants the President's programs to fail thinking that it will protect his millions. He should remember the addage, be careful what you wish for. If the President fails so too does America which would have dire consequences on each and every American - including Rush.

SUSPECT BIG BROTHER INTERNET / TELECOM SPYING OR MALICIOUS INTERFERENCE -- USING YOUR TELECOMMUNICATIONS TO HARASS YOU?

Do something -- tell your story to the American Civil Liberties Union (link below).

And read in the "comments" section the ongoing account of a journalist in search of his First Amendment rights.

Then demand that ACLU renew its free speech fight by filing a class-action suit against unconstitutional, rogue government surveillance operations.

Chris, is there a measure of RL's audience in NY-20? It seems to me that if it is very large, this would backfire.

In fact, that metric is so obvious that I would assume it had been taken into account by the Murphy campaign. Unless this is one of those National Committee directives from DC that totally missed the salient local facts. Both parties have done this sort of thing from DC in the past. A local guy should get it right, however.
