Alaska Senate: Begich Widens Lead Slightly

Democrat Mark Begich now leads Sen. Ted Stevens (R) by just over 1,000 votes with more than 90 percent of the total ballots counted in the high-profile Alaska Senate race.

The Alaska Division of Elections counted another 14,500 votes on Friday and Begich's lead increased from 841 before the day started to 1,022 when the counting ended.

That means that Begich has gained more than 4,200 votes on Stevens since the 90,000 early, absentee and questioned ballots began to be counted on Wednesday. There are roughly 24,000 votes left to be counted, and the counting will resume, and presumably conclude, early next week, according to the Begich campaign.

Of the remaining votes, roughly 15,000 are in the Anchorage area (a swing area in the race) and another 8,000 are in the Juneau area, which should be Begich territory.

"The news continues to be positive," Begich said in a statement released by the campaign tonight. "With the gap widening slightly in our favor today, I feel even more optimistic that when all the ballots are counted next week, we'll see Alaskans came out to vote for new leadership in Washington, D.C."

If Begich winds up winning, Democrats will have gained seven seats in the Senate with two results -- in Minnesota and Georgia -- still undecided. In Minnesota, Sen. Norm Coleman (R) has a 206-vote lead over comedian Al Franken (D) and a manual statewide recount is almost certain. In Georgia, Sen. Saxby Chambliss (R) and former state Rep. Jim Martin (D) will face off in a Dec. 2 runoff.

Should Democrats sweep all three contests, they will control 60 seats (including Independent Sen. Joe Lieberman of Connecticut) in the Senate -- a margin that, if it held, would allow them to break Republican-led filibusters.

No, it could not be. Just to humor you, assuming this was the case and somehow it was not known until Obama decided to run for president, I suspect the HRC campaign would have found it out.

Grow a brain people, we've seen heroin smugglers and coverup artists pardoned, this idea of "it's hard to pardon" has no basis in fact, it just requires a signature. And pardons always come on Christmas Eve, so the press furor over them is ignored. Go check out the NYT headline for the Christmas pardons in 91.

As for the people whining about Obama's birth certificate, really, you honestly believe neither the RNC nor the DNC ever asked for his birth certificate nor did the filing commission for the Illinois senate races nor did the election commissions for any of the 50 states. If you believe that, you are stupid. Period. I mean, really really stupid. You need to get away from the computer and get a life, turn off the TV go outside and find out what life is, because you've looked at reality through tiny screens WAY too long. Good Lord, run down to your post office and try to get a passport without a birth certificate, you might find out something you don't know. Learn something about real life. Get over being stupid. Because you are really really stupid, and you need to fix that.

First I have to laugh about Obama's birth certificate. What to see it? Go to Factcheck.org they've seen, smelled, touched and photographed it.

There were no illegal voters in this election there were illegal acts by Republicans trying to disqualify legally registered voters however.

Next, we all know that Bush will pardon Stevens, it's just a matter of when. If Stevens ends up winning, Bush could pardon him before Jan 20 thereby removing the stigma of a convicted felon. If Stevens loses then he will be pardoned at the end of the Bush Presidency.

Loooks like some of the Posters really drank a lot of the cool aid. I bet the still have the red marks around their mouths. The country is now officially Center-Left.

My full sized anatomically correct Palinesque4play doll by Wasilla Corp. arrived by ups today.
I read the instructions and followed them explicitly. I installed the program chip and connected the battery pack. Out of curiosity I switched it to governor mode. It immediately started talking and would not shut up. When it saw the front door open it said it was a sign from God and plowed through it. I haven't seen it since.
Now I can't get a refund and I may be responsible for whatever this thing does before the battery runs down.
I do not recommend this model, it is far, far too lifelike to be practical.

It's entirely certain there will be a manual recount in Minnesota: It is mandated by the Minnesota Constitution in elections where the vote is divided by less than 1/2%. Out of 2.9 million votes, that would require the vote be divided by less than 14,500 votes. Currently, the vote is divided by 204 votes. (They already manually recounted 199 precincts, as a "dry run", and Al Franken gained 2 net votes.) In fact, the recount is supposed to begin this Tuesday, although it's expected to continue well into December, and the court fights could extend into the Senator's term.

The state Supreme Court ruling dating from the last statewide recount (there have been many more local recounts), of a 1962 governor's race, established that in a recount, one is supposed to count any ballot where one can identify an intent to vote for a candidate, surely the most liberal (no pun intended) standard in any state on this matter.

Incidentally, in Minnesota, it REALLY isn't over till it's over: Back in 1962, the original count indicated the incumbent governor (Elmer Andersen) won, and he served for a couple months in 1963 before the lawsuts and the recounts were over and his opponent (Karl Rolvaag) took office.

Dear 37thOSt
Please stop asking for a non-existent document. Barack Obama, or should I say President-Elect Barack Obama’s Birth Certificate was produced and verified according to constitutional law, the same way that Senator John McCain’s birth certificate was. It was proven without a shadow of a doubt that Barack Obama was born in Hawaii and that John McCain was born in the Canal Zone of Panama. They both had a right to run for president, even though John McCain was not born on American soil, due to the fact that his parents are naturalized citizens.
I think your confusion must come from the unfounded emails sent around that have been proven to be false by nonpartisan organizations. I for one, whenever I received one of these emails would do some research on the subject, but then again, I am not a low information voter like those who tend to believe bogus emails.
Now can we stay on subject, the fact of the matter is that in a state with such a low population, the fact that they have not been able to count the votes in a timely manner is very worrisome.

I would like to see more intelligent posts

Begich and Stevens not Obama's citizenship
that would have disqualified him for standing as president.

This column is about the Begich and Steven's
voting. How can some posters get it wrong
about it?

If Begich wins that will stop Palin from advancing any further in politics on a National scale. Her mentor Stevens will be
outed by popular vote, so no reason for Alaska to call another election if he resigns.

There are others under political pressure
too in Alaska, Kelly the incumbant Republican for district 7, (Fairbanks) and his Democrat rival Kassel, who is just one vote behind him? That is a VERY close vote LOL. And a recount could be crucial to both candidates.

Begich is at present 1000 votes ahead, considering on election night he was 3,000 plus votes behind Stevens? He should win by a reasonable margin, however, don't count on Steven's giving in without a fight and insistence on a recount.

If Ted Stevens is beaten in the outright vote, that will save his colleagues from having to remove him from the Senate.

The stuff he was convicted for was small stuff compared to what these senators and congressmen get. Barack Obama got his house for $300K under market price when the convicted corruption guy Tony Rezko helped him buy his house.

Ted Stevens was witchhunted, but he was fairly convicted and if he doesn't lose the election, he'd have to get expelled from the Senate by his colleagues.

There is something wrong with Army193 and 37thOSt, whom I suspect are one and the same wing-nut.

As the President Elect, the most rigorous of background checks are completed by both the FBI and Secret Service. One would expect that if something so simple as a birth certificate was missing or was from another country, don't you think they would have determined that? Or are they in the tank for Obama too?

Get real wing-nuts. I do beleive that conspiracies exist. That our government was engaged in and executed conspiracies in my life time, such as the multiple attempts to assassinate Casto, (those didn't work out) The attempt to assassinate Saddam just days before the invasion, (that failed as well) Iran Contra, (that was blown open and reveled) G. Gordon Liddy and the plumbers (they were found out as well). These examples demonstrate two things, one: we are not very effective in trying to execute illegal acts as a nation, two, as we are a democracy, with administrations from different parties switching power, keeping those conspiracies a secret is almost impossible as the party that lost power is leaving itself wide open to being destroyed by the incoming party.

I have a hard time believing the Secret Service would allow a non native man to assume the mantle of the presidency as they are sworn to uphold the constitution and laws of the land. And unlike politicians they have nothing to gain by engaging in Machiavellian plans.

So turn off that hate radio, change the channel from Fox News to maybe CNN's Headline news for an hour and be done with your news gathering. Create a real live where you engage in making your community a better place by volunteering at a veterans homeless shelter, mentor a kid, serve at a soup kitchen once a week.

In other words, get a life and do something meaningful.

Begich's father was a former congressman, who died in an airplane crash with Cokie Robert's Dad. Anyway... Anchorage City councilman, Mayor... his "district" would be Anchorage. But Anchorage is also the largest city (town), and so most people who end up in the Capital, Juneau... are from the Anchorage area. The only other "district" would be Fairbanks, 2nd largest town. Anyway, check the vote totals... 200K for the entire State. I'm still thinking this is not over because a lot of those absentee ballots are military.... then again, maybe they are voting for Begich.

Biden couldn't be stopped from talking. How was he "held back?"

Obama's campaign did its best to keep from matching the smears by the far right including Palin and sometimes by McCain himself. They could have talked about but didn't, McCain's long friendly history with convicted Watergate criminal G. Gordon Liddy, who was in the business of stealing elections. Liddy gave McCain $5,000 and John appeared on his radio show. Liddy, for all you gun nuts out there, was the guy who recommended, on the radio, that you should shoot AFT and FBI agents "in the head" so as to avoid flak jacket and Kevlar vests.

McCain sucked up to the same crazy preachers that he'd disavowed eight years earlier: Robertson, Hagee, Haggard, Jones, Parsley. He'd have disinterred Falwell if he thought it would have gotten him a few votes. Palin of course, was even worse. When she wasn't speaking in tongues, or being smitten by the Lord and falling on the floor, she was listening to uneducated African ministers who claimed to drive out witches, and to prosletyzers who claimed that terrorism in Israel was God's punishment to the Jews for their failure to worship Jesus. Don't take my word for it: Check out the videos on YouTube.

He'll split the Anchorage and Fairbanks votes. He win hugely in four as yet uncounted senate district in the far north, as well as the far west. He should easily win.

Why is there always some nut out there who feels there is some sort of conspiracy going on. I spent 6 years in the USAF flying nuclear armed bombers. I had much more than a top secret clearance and I never saw any evidence of any shocking or strange conspiracies to hide important information from the public.

The reason why Ayers and Wright stayed out of the limelight is that they didn't want to become a distraction from the important issues involved in the election. There are all sorts of unsupported rumors circulating about Palin, McCain Obama, Wright, Ayers, etc. etc. Some of them may have a hint of truth to them. McCain did have a bunch of affairs, and was a total screw up, but we saw enough of him in the news to be able to make our own determination of his intellect and stability. Palin did belong to a really crazy church and didn't have much of an education, but again we could judge her intellect and ability from watching how she performed in the few interviews she gave. Obama did do some coke as a teen, and was indeed the sone of a Kenyan man but we watched him for almost two years run an incredible campaign, and it was clear to anyone who paid attention that he was an intelligent and honorable man.

All this garbage about Kenyan birth certificates and terrorist ties wasn't even believed by the McCain campaign, and you can bet they looked very hard. These rumors were manufactured by people who wanted to sway voters in the Rove tradition. Is there anything in Obama's past that he doesn't want us to know, I would imagine that as a human he has done thing he isn't proud of, but any conspiracy to hide his true agenda or ties to terrorists is rediculous.

There is something fundamentally wrong with the Obama campaign keeping Ayers held back for the election - and now Ayers comes out and talks - the public deserves to have all the information BEFORE THE ELECTION.

There is something fundamentally wrong with the Obama campaign keeping Rev. Wrigtht held back for the election - and now Wright comes out and talks - the public deserves to have all the information BEFORE THE ELECTION.

There is something fundamentally wrong with the Obama campaign keeping Joe Biden held back for the election - and now Biden comes out and talks - the public deserves to have all the information BEFORE THE ELECTION. - well we all sort of knew he was a nut all along.

GO JOE !!!

You can go to swingstateproject.com and they have a nice schedule of where the votes are coming from, how many remain, and who they favor a few posts down the page.
The last ballots 24,000 ballots will be counted Tuesday with 5,000 more the day before. Most of them are from Begich areas. So this race looks really good right now. I'm guessing when the last totals are given Tuesday afternoon that we'll know we won't need a recount. If it's a margin larger than .5 percent the state will not pay for it. Right now its .36 percent.

Every day I hear something different about what Begich's areas are. Does anyone have anything definitive?
