Explaining Alvin Greene

South Carolina Democratic Senate nominee Alvin Greene. AP Photo/Mary Ann Chastain

The surprise -- and even that word understates it -- nomination of Alvin Greene, an unemployed man who lives with his parents, as the Democratic nominee in the South Carolina Senate race has captivated the country.

How could a man who has acknowledged to never campaigning for the office wind up beating a former four-term legislator -- Vic Rawls -- by 30,000 votes for the right to challenge conservative icon Jim DeMint (R) this fall?

Theories abound. Here's a look at the most popular ones:

1. Greene is a Republican plant: South Carolina Rep. Jim Clyburn (D) is leading the charge on this storyline -- insisting that Greene is part of a broader conspiracy designed to wreak havoc in Democratic primaries including his own. By this afternoon, there was evidence that the man who had challenged Clyburn in the Democratic primary (and lost) had financial ties to a Republican consulting firm.

Clyburn has yet to provide any evidence that suggests the same thing was going on in the Senate race but it's worth noting that planting candidates for nefarious reasons is not a new practice in South Carolina. Clyburn has cited the famous example of Republican consultant Rod Shealy recruiting an unemployed black man to challenge Rep. Arthur Ravenel in the 1st district race in an attempt to help drive white turnout statewide and, in so doing, help win his sister the lieutenant governor's nomination. And, yes, that really did happen.

Not only have Republicans -- both publicly and privately -- denied any involvement, it also doesn't make much sense for them to engage in the sort of dirty trick that is being alleged. DeMint, while he inspires considerable disgust among many Democrats (and even a few Republicans) at the national level, is quite popular in the Palmetto State. Whether it was Alvin Greene or Vic Rawl running against him, DeMint is something close to a shoo-in for re-election. Would Republicans really take that sort of risk in a race where they would be, at best, a longshot under any circumstances?

It seems unlikely. That said, having spent the last few days sorting through the nastiest political campaigns in South Carolina history, nothing would shock us.

2.Ballot primacy: Greene's name appeared first on the Democratic primary ballot and, since it's a near-certainty that no one -- or certainly very few people -- knew who either Greene or Rawl were, they simply voted for the first name they saw.

With very few contested races -- Democratic candidates won their nominations without challenge for Comptroller General, state Attorney General, Lieutenant Governor and Secretary of State -- and the Republican race for governor drawing so much oxygen, there was almost no coverage of the Senate race.

That dearth of information could well have contributed to simply picking the first name on the ballot and moving on.

The counter argument -- made smartly by Tom Schaller over at 538.com -- is that turnout in the Senate race seems oddly high for a race that drew absolutely no attention. A total of 169,542 people voted in the Senate contest while 188,576 -- roughly 19,000 more -- cast ballots in the far more high-profile Democratic primary for governor.

3. Race-motivated voting: One longtime Democratic strategist who has worked on and off in South Carolina for a career insisted that race is the simplest -- and right -- explanation.

"Black voters knew the guy was black by looking at his name," the source said of Greene. The source added that black voters who always comprise a large chunk of the vote in a South Carolina Democratic primary made up an even larger segment this time around due to the massive interest generated by the Republican governor's race. (South Carolina has an open primary system where individual voters can choose to vote in either the Democratic or Republican primaries.)

Describing the potential thought process of some black voters in Tuesday's primary, the source said:

"They go in there to vote and they see two names on the ballot. They've never heard of either one, but they see 'Alvin Greene' first and 'Victor Rawl' second. They vote for the name they feel most comfortable with."

State Sen. Robert Ford, an African American who lost his bid for the Democratic gubernatorial nomination, seems to subscribe to this theory. "Vic Rawl had money, but he didn't have enough," Ford told the Charleston Post and Courier. "He wasn't able to identify himself with black voters. No white folks have an 'e' on the end of Green."

That's not entirely true, however. Billionaire investor Jeff Greene, who is running for the Democratic Senate nomination in Florida, is white.

CC has really only offered only one explanation. While it seems, just, possible that Greene is a plant, this couldn't explain how Greene won. A conspiracy to get him nominated could be be tight, perhaps involving only two people, but how would the conspirators get 100,000 people to vote for Greene and run that campaign secretly?

Ballot primacy is a possible factor, but Larry Sabato has calculated that even in the 'best' circumstances - a low profile election down ballot of a high profile one - this is only worth 5% of the vote. This is similar to the figures in Australia where voting is compulsory.

The only real explanation is therefore that significant numbers voted for Greene because they assumed he was black.

there is definitely something corrupt about MMS that obviously started under Cheney's direction and CONTINUED under Obama's appointment in June 2009. The answer is to
stop this blame game and have a full throated
independent criminal investigation of MMS.
If its Salazar's fault as hard as I worked

U.S. Discovers Nearly $1 Trillion in Afghan Mineral Deposits

The United States has discovered nearly $1 trillion in untapped mineral deposits in Afghanistan, far beyond any previously known reserves and enough to fundamentally alter the Afghan economy and perhaps the Afghan war itself, according to senior American government officials.

The previously unknown deposits -- including huge veins of iron, copper, cobalt, gold and critical industrial metals like lithium -- are so big and include so many minerals that are essential to modern industry that Afghanistan could eventually be transformed into one of the most important mining centers in the world, the United States officials believe.

Sounds like a re-run of Jimmy Carter's MEOW speech.

Obama is looking WEAKER AND WEAKER AND WEAKER.

The first thing Obama has to do IS ADMIT HIS OWN FAULT.

ADMIT THAT THE SAFETY INSPECTIONS SHOULD HAVE BEEN IN HIS OFFSHORE DRILLING REVIEW - AND HE IS RESPONSIBLE.

Obama said he was responsible, BUT OBAMA DOESN'T ACT RESPONSIBLE.

Obama says he is responsible, then he blames someone else.

It is Obama's fault.

This is Obama's oil spill.

Obama's disaster - Obama's chance he could prove that he could handle a disaster better than Bush - because that is what Obama said he could do.

Well on that issue, Obama is a COMPLETE FAILURE.

There have NEVER been any facts to back up Obama

In 2008 - it was all pie-in-the-sky stuff - about how great Obama was - how he was amazing -

But nothing of substance.

Obama has spent his entire life going from one affirmative action program to another affirmative action program - and never really doing anything.

Obama's resume is filled with titles and advancements - but once he gets a title or advancement - he rarely does ANYTHING in the position.

Obama got elected to the US Senate. what did he do ? Legislation ? NO.

Obama went on a book tour.

Then he ran for President - turning the democratic delegate selection process into ANOTHER AFFIRMATIVE ACTION PROGRAM.

Obama has been trading on his race his entire life.

It makes sense that Obama and his followers see everything through race - affirmative action and government intervention is the way for them.

Raise the taxes - push through a health care program no one wants.

Shoddy Safety inspections - the oil rig blows up.

It's all about race, right ? Those people can't ACTUALLY oppose our policies, right?

Obama took almost a million dollars from BP - THE SAFETY INSPECTIONS WERE NOT CONDUCTED PROPERLY.

The oil rig EXPLODED, 11 people died.

If this was Bush doing that, the democrats would have been screaming for weeks.

And yet, the democrats will not ADMIT THAT OBAMA HAS DONE ANYTHING WRONG.

It is just horrible that the democrats will not apply the same standards to Obama that they did to Bush.

The democrats on this blog - instead of being honest - prefer to say it is revenge of the Republicans - instead of stating the truth that the democrats were WAY over the top with Bush.

But for the democrats, it is all about HATE - they hated Bush - for being Bush

So it follows that the other side should be allowed to act the same - however Obama is BLACK - AND THEY ARE PREPARED TO SCREAM RACISM AT THE SLIGHTEST HINT OF ANYTHING.

IT IS A JOKE.

Call the Oil Rig racist - it exploded and made Obama look bad.

It can't be because obama didn't make sure there were proper safety inspections - IT MUST BE RACISM - the OIL RIG MUST BE RACIST AGAINST OBAMA - THERE IS NO OTHER REASON FOR THE EXPLOSION.

Putting people into racial categories - and then promoting and hiring them according to quotas assigned to those categories.

That creates DIFFERENT STANDARDS FOR DIFFERENT CATEGORIES.

It is no different from the JIM CROW ERA

In the Jim Crow era, they thought they had a perfectly good reason for dividing everyone up then too.

AFFIRMATIVE ACTION IS RACIST - different categories - different standards applied to different people based on the color of their skin.

It is RACIST.

You really can not reason with noacoler

His main problem is that he hates himself.

He hates everyone around him too - but he hangs around them just to get them back for not liking him.

I supposed it is rooted in his homosexuality - and perhaps that his family and friends did not fully accept him - so he lashes out at them, and he hangs around - just to annoy them.

That is what he is doing here - he is just annoying everyone - for the sake of annoying them.

It goes directly to his psychological problems resulting from the maladjustment with his homosexuality.

It is probably why he wants to move out of the country too.

Oh well - he is one of the worst on here - just attacking people for basically no reason - and talking little about policy.

Brigade - stick to the issues in your postings - they have nothing of substance to say about that.

Trillion dollar deficit, anyone ? Man, if anyone in this country thought that Obama was EVEN CAPABLE of running a trillion dollar deficit when he was running in 2008 -

Ddawd, I can't speak for any of the other conservatives on the board. I don't think "ped" has any racist connotations. A lot of what I see from 37th is in response to Broadwayjoe---they have a kind of back-and-forth thing going and seem to be having fun with it.

There may be racists who post here, but I see a lot of comments here and in the MSM that imply that the driving force behind most opposition to Obama and his policies is racist, and I just don't buy it. I can't PROVE that its wrong anymore than I can prove that teabaggers aren't racist---I don't actually know any teabaggers. But I remember the vitriolic attacks on Bill Clinton and his presidency was relatively successful.

I don't think Obama plays the race card so much as his white supporters do. Hell, he's half white and was raised in a white family. There were some blacks who used this to brand him as insufficently black. Some whites questioned the reasons for his association with the likes of Jeremiah Wright. Again, I have no PROOF, but I suspect it was a necessary gambit in his Illinois political career.

And I have no way of knowing how much you personally have been involved in the civil rights struggle. But I have seen some old Republicans who stood toe to toe with blacks before the mobs in the Jim Crow south later attacked as if being a conservative Republican made them racist. B1-Bob Dornan comes to mind. He was very active for civil rights in the 1960s, but you could post quotes from him over the years that would make Rand Paul look tame by comparison. And I know good and well there are a lot of liberals today all puffed up in self-righteousness who were hiding under the bed in the 1960s when there was blood in the street.

Brigade, there are plenty of non-racist conservatives in the world. Can you say the same thing about the ones on this board? zook with his "ped" nonsense, or 37th with his affirmative action stuff or jaked with his birther stuff or leapin with his slavery comments?

I'm actually pretty hesitant to throw out the racist charge, but it's so incredibly rampant and overt on this board that to disregard it would just be willful ignorance.

Leichtman and My Other Left Wing Friends- Oceana called

Obama's drilling policy, as outlined 2 weeks BEFORE the spill,

"a wholesale assault on the Oceans"- Wow ( I suppose you find

this FACT racist)

From NPR-
Obama Ends Ban On East Coast Offshore Drilling
by SCOTT NEUMAN

March 31, 2010
President Obama announced the end of a decades-old ban on oil and gas drilling along much of the U.S. Atlantic coast and northern Alaska on Wednesday, as part of an effort to reduce foreign imports and win support for an energy and climate bill.

The changes in policy would allow drilling on tracts as close as 50 miles to the Virginia shore, and end a longstanding moratorium on drilling from Delaware to central Florida. Exploration in the Gulf of Mexico would be expanded eastward, and swaths north of Alaska would be opened up.

"For decades we've talked about how our dependence on foreign oil threatens our economy — yet our will to act rises and falls with the price of a barrel of oil," Obama said during a speech at Andrews Air Force Base in Maryland. He also praised the military's efforts to operate ships, tanks and planes on alternative fuels.

"There will be those who strongly disagree with this decision," said Obama, who was accompanied by Interior Secretary Ken Salazar. "But what I want to emphasize is that this announcement is part of a broader strategy that will move us from an economy that runs on fossil fuels and foreign oil to one that relies more on homegrown fuels and clean energy."

The U.S. Geological Survey estimates that the U.S. Atlantic coast could hold as much as 37 trillion cubic feet of gas and 4 billion barrels of oil.

The administration has reportedly rejected proposed leases in Alaska's environmentally sensitive Bristol Bay, and a moratorium on drilling off the West Coast would be left in place.

The new policy reverses decades of precedent and is sure to anger environmentalists who have long opposed such a move. Rep. Edward Markey (D-MA), who regularly takes a pro-environmental line, urged oil companies to drill in areas they've already leased before moving on to new coastal areas.

Key Provisions
Allows oil and gas drilling along the Atlantic Coast from Delaware to central Florida.

Opens up Alaska's northern Arctic coast along the Chukchi Sea and the Beaufort Sea to exploration. Drilling would be allowed if scientists conclude the areas are suitable for offshore extraction.

Expands drilling in the Gulf of Mexico eastward, closer to Florida's Gulf Coast, by 2022 if Congress allows a moratorium currently in place there to expire.

Safeguards Alaska's environmentally sensitive Bristol Bay, which had reportedly been under consideration for drilling.

Keeps in place a ban on drilling off the U.S. West coast.

The conservation group Oceana labeled the president's move to lift the offshore drilling ban a "wholesale assault" on the oceans.

Actually, debate requires substance from both sides of the argument. 12Bar and Noacoler have been presented with a wealth of evidence that Obama has mishandled the crisis in the gulf. None of the evidence has been refuted or even disputed. Instead, we get the usual "na na na na na" and name-calling. Consider this another conservative rout of a liberal position.

Clearly, this is how you feel.

You can not have the position that using sexual slurs against conservatives is OK (because you do it, and just did it) - while ethnic slurs are not OK.

WELL THE INEXPERIENCED AND UNQUALIFED OBAMA IS EXPOSED AGAIN.

What is Karzai doing ? In response to Obama saying he wants to pull out next year, Karzai is NOW MAKING HIS PLANS.

KARZAI NOW SAYS HE WANTS TO MAKE A DEAL WITH THE TALIBAN.

AFTER HOW MANY AMERICANS DIED THERE ????

The point is: DIDN'T OBAMA THINK OF THIS? DIDN'T OBAMA THINK OF THIS???

DIDN'T OBAMA THINK ABOUT WHAT WOULD KARZAI DO WHEN HE SAID HE WAS GOING TO GET OUT OF AFGHANISTAN ??

OBAMA IS A COMPLETE FAILURE.

It was clear when Obama made this speech that there were serious problems.

Now those problems are clear: OBAMA HAS NO IDEA WHAT HE IS DOING.

Obama messed up safety in his OWN OFFSHORE DRILLING POLICY.

Obama messed up terrorism policy.

Obama is messing up Afghanistan.

It is not about the permit - it was about WHO WAS OVERSEEING THE SAFETY INSPECTIONS

The Obama people were RESPONSIBLE TO MAKE SURE EVERYTHING THAT HAPPENED ON THE BP OIL RIG WAS UP TO SAFETY STANDARDS.

That didn't happen.

Obama said that the "year-long" review was over in March - THIS IS SOMETHING THAT OBAMA WAS REVIEWING.

Obama has PROVEN HIS INCOMPETENCE.

This is Obama's oil spill

The democrats are REPSONSIBLE FOR electing an INEXPERIENCED AND UNQUALIFIED person.

This nation is IN DANGER AS A RESULT OF INCOMPETENT, INEXPERIENCED AND UNQUALIFIED PEOPLE IN CHARGE IN WASHINGTON.

Terrorist suspects are not handled correctly,

Oil Rig safety is cast aside for those who gave Obama almost a million dollars, as in the case of BP.

Nothing is going on with Obama - outside of the partisan politics he PROMISED HE WOULD NOT PRACTICE.

The whole thing is a DISGRACE.

The moveon.org or OFA has idiots like broadwayjoe posting things which is no better than the HATE OF THE KKK.

Does everyone REALIZE THAT OFFSHORE DRILLING WAS A FIELD THAT OBAMA REPRESENTED HIMSELF AS CONDUCTING A YEAR-LONG REVIEW - AND OBAMA WAS CASTING DOWN UPON THE NATION AN UNPRECEDENTED NEW DRILLING POLICY ???

Does everyone realize that this is something that Obama was claiming that he knew more about - more than everyone who came before him.

OBAMA IS RESPONSIBLE FOR THIS OIL SPILL.

The proper SAFETY STANDARDS were in place at MMS - and the SAFETY INSPECTIONS were NOT being conducted properly by Obama's people.

It is that simple.

They knew what the RIGHT WAY TO CONDUCT SAFETY INSPECTIONS ON THE BP RIG WAS - THEY JUST DIDN'T DO IT.

MEANWHILE - Obama was conducting a whole year-long review of energy policy - which including OFFSHORE OIL DRILLING.

Please note- Obama wanted the EAST COAST TO BE AT RISK WHILE PROTECTING REMOTE PARTS OF NORTHERN ALASKA.

WHAT KIND OF IDIOT POLICY IS THAT ???

The bottom line is OBAMA IS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE OIL SPILL.

Obama should resign.

@12Bar: in a tonal language inflection is part of the spelling, not for emphasis or emotion as in English.  Cantonese has six tones (some say nine), Mandarin four, Vietnamese six, though in the south two of them are the same.  What that means is that the same word pronounced with a different inflection is a different word.

Tonal languages are always monosyllabic, so they tend to have a lot of compound words.  In English the long words tend to be the important ones, in VN there is not a single word over six letters so everything looks like a word one should know, but a common word is no shorter than one only a scholar or specialist would know.

When you hear Chinese people doing that weird curved drag at the end of a sentence, that's the emotional part of the tone, since you can't for example inflect up to indicate a question, you'll change the last word to another by doing so .. in fact, Cantonese has a spoken question mark, "ma," where we inflect.

"you go home, ma?"

Vietnamese doesn't have that, it has a grammar implementation.

"You go home, right not?"

Hardest language I've ever studied.

The word "to fix" sounds the same as "milk" in the south, so there's a joke about a sign you see all over the country, "Honda milk," since the two tones are the same there, distinguishable in the north.

Or maybe he was teleported from a distant planet, so prove that he WASN'T.

@12BarBlues: I'm in a class of three people at a language school in Seattle.  Their usual minimum for a class is four students but I'm in level 5 and ever since level 3 they've let us get by with only three students, since so few are going to go that far.  Two of us are neck and neck, the third is struggling, but he's going through a lot, a marriage to a rural Vietnamese wife that's gone spectacularly bad, spring-popping-out-of-head bad.  Anyway.

A week ago Saturday both the other two were absent and I ended up getting a two-hour private lesson, all dictation, that's what we're working on now.  I can read the language just fine except for newspapers, which are harder than literature, I can write idiomatically, and can speak in both the northern and southern dialects, albeit a lot better in the northern since my teacher in from Hanoi and the recordings in the book we use now are also from the north.

It's a very hard language to understand spoken, and the tones actually help there .. e.g. "electricity" and "money" sound the same but for tone and the tones are easy, finally, to distinguish.  Learning German and even Cantonese I was able to understand at the same level as the other three basic skills, not in Vietnamese.  It's really hard.

In the second class we had two Chinese guys, I would have thought that, already speaking tonal languages, they would get VN tones right away, but it took them just as long as it took us.

It's a tonal language, of course, a special obstacle for westerners, but I'm past that.

There will be a level six class if we all continue, private lessons if not.

Funny stuff: the other two students are both named Paul.  There is a fourth guy not in the class but who joins us for practice on Thursdays.  His name is Chris.  Like "Newhart."  He's been at it four years, spends half his time in VN doing business there, and I'm as fluent as he is already, and much better at pronunciation.

Growing up I had a really bad stutter, it's been gone in English a long time, showed up a while in Vietnamese but now completely gone there so absent that aversion I'm surging ahead.  And a good thing, I need fluency soon because we're getting serious about preparing for the move.  Boxes of books to the donation dropoffs today.

Your assumption that black people vote according to a person's name is ridiculous. It makes us sound like we don't have a clue when we vote. If that IS the case for some blacks, then they are a hand few for sure. And then you say we just pick the first name on the ballot out of only two names there in the first place. How demeaning both of those accusations really are. It seems white people still think blacks are ignorant and don't know jack. Well I'm here to tell you that you are wrong. Who is President of the Gulf of Mexico?

Since Feb 2009, when Obama's MMS allowed BP to have a license to drill a deep sea well without an environmental impact study or proper safety measures, our government has leased the Gulf Coast to BP. Once the spill took place nearly 2 months ago, our government has given BP free reign to flub 4 attempts at stopping the leak and to limit scientific and media access to information necessary to assist in formulating a plan to stop or at least contain the leak-including making believe until 3 days ago that HD video of the leak did not exist-BP has in effect ran the spill and it's leader- Tony Hayward is in effect President of the Gulf... Oh, not entirely true- Obama is proud of the fact that he asked BP to drill 2 relief wells instead of one, and thank goodness they agreed!

(It took 5 to stop the most recent spill in Mexico- in 200 feet of water....)

Just who do you think is responsible for protecting the gulf shores from environmental disasters like this? Who should be coordinating the clean-up efforts? Are you satisfied with the Obama effort, or do you think, at day 55, that maybe he was a little slow out of the gate?
Do you agree with James Carville? Or do you think Bush and Cheney should be down there cleaning up the mess? Or maybe you think if we all rant and rave about George W. Bush and Katrina and talk about payback, then maybe God will just take care of the situation in the gulf and BHO and BP will both be off the hook. You think? Or maybe, like Noacoler, you'd like to throw in a little nonsense about global warming. Or what about how we were lied into a war in Iraq?

When was the permit actually issued?- 37th

Feb 2009 - BP files a 52 page exploration and environmental impact plan for the Macondo well, located in Mississippi Canyon Block 252 in the United States sector of the Gulf of Mexico about 41 miles (66 km) off the Louisiana coast, with the Minerals Management Service (MMS), an arm of the United States Department of the Interior that oversees offshore drilling. The plan stated that it was "unlikely that an accidental surface or subsurface oil spill would occur from the proposed activities".[7] In the event an accident did take place the plan stated that due to the well being 48 miles (77 km) from shore and the response capabilities that would be implemented, no significant adverse impacts would be expected.[7] The Department of the Interior exempted BP's Gulf of Mexico drilling operation from a detailed environmental impact study after concluding that a massive oil spill was unlikely.[8][9]

At any rate, Nikki Haley's real name is "Nimrata Randhawa" -- we assume she doesn't use it because it might not sit well with the intolerant teabaggers like Phalin (who left college in Hawaii because, according to her Dad, there were too many native Hawaiians and minorities there [you can't make up something that crazy]) for whom Nimrata's been fronting for personal and political gain.

As for Mrs. Randhawa's extracurriculars, that is MR. Randhawa's personal problem. Good luck, pal. Until he resolves "it," his man card will remain revoked.

Good news, er, I guess: as mentioned, Mrs. Randhawa's alleged frolics have given birth to a new English Language word: "manizer." Thanks, Nim, for this contribution to American culture.

THE REAL QUESTION is the WHETHER THE PROPERT SAFETY STANDARDS WERE BEING APPLIED - AND THE ENFORCEMENT OF SAFETY UNDER THE PERMIT - CLEARLY ALL UNDER OBAMA.

OBAMA IS RESPONSIBLE. Obama took almost a million dollars from BP - and whoops - the safety inspections were not done correctly.

Frank Rich:

"THOSE of us left off the guest list could only fantasize about Rush Limbaugh’s nuptials last weekend. Now cruising into marriage No. 4 — an impressive total for a guy not quite 60 — Rush staged a lavish luau at the Breakers in Palm Beach. The revelers included what some might regard as the Rat Pack from hell — Sean Hannity, Rudy Giuliani, James Carville and Clarence Thomas. The scriptural readings remain a mystery. But we did learn the identity of the pop deity anointed as the wedding singer. That would be Elton John, whose last, albeit second-class, wedding was a civil union with David Furnish in 2005.

Why would America’s right-wing radio king hire an openly gay entertainer to star at his wedding?"

Can you say hypocrisy? It's curious that most of the heroes of the family values crowd are like this fat junkie marrying his 4wife, half his age. Or Newt Gingrich or Rudy Guiliani or Mark Sanford, or John Ensign... the list is endless. But irony is something wingers just don't have a gene for.

Obama's lucky that guys like Chris here, and the Democrap Socialist Party--controlled Main Stream Media, is in their hip-pocket, G.W. Bush would have been crucified within the first week after the BP oil spill happened.
Despite the excuses by the Obama--worshippers here trying to put all the blame on BP, this was a failure by the Obama administration, and only proved that Obama is a total incompetent. He could have for instance:

Had he ordered that the 1994 "In-Situ Burn" Fed. Response Burn Plan used at the start of this oil spill, 95% of all this oil spilling into the Gulf could have been burned off, according to former National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administrations Oil Spill Response Coordinator Ron Gouquet (http://blog.al.com/live/2010/05/fire_boom_oil_spill_raines.html).

Had Obama used Skimmer ships, as the Saudis have used, most of this oil would have been recovered. The Dutch even offered the Obama administration the use of their Skimmer ships to try to help, and Obama did nothing.

This ahole didn't even meet with the head of BP until 52 days later, and only because he started getting flack from the MSM guys that have been giving him a free pass until now for it.
This pathetic moron should be impeached for incometence. G.W. Bush was an Einstein compared to this idiot.

"Chevron Spills More Than 400 Barrels Of Oil In Utah, Just Days After Governor Called For More Domestic Production

Yesterday, Chevron discovered a leaking pipeline that was spewing 50 gallons of crude oil per minute into Red Butte Creek in Salt Lake City, UT. By the time crews capped the leak, more than 21,000 gallons — between 400-500 barrels — of oil had spilled out, “coating geese and ducks” and closing the city’s largest park. The Salt Lake City Tribune writes:

Chevron pledged to clean up the 6-mile mess, but the company could not quantify the damage. As of late Saturday, Chevron said the leak had been stopped. But company representatives could not say when it began, how much oil spilled into city waterways and why — despite pipeline monitors — it apparently took hours to learn of the accident."

LOL -- exactly what you might have expected from a cabal of hateful, impotent clowns:

"The polls hadn't even closed Tuesday when "tea party" activists in Nevada started sniping at one another over whether Sharron Angle, the soon-to-be Republican nominee for U.S. Senate, was the best candidate to bring down Senate Majority Leader Harry M. Reid.

In Virginia, tea partiers vented on blogs and to reporters about the movement's inability to coalesce around a single, strong candidate in two House races, resulting in the nomination of establishment candidates instead.

The national tea party movement has never had a central organization or single leader; in fact, it has boasted the opposite. But Tuesday's primary results provided fresh evidence of the amorphous network's struggle to convert activist anger and energy into winning results. Frustrated and lacking agreement on what to do next, self-identified tea party leaders say the movement may be in danger of breaking apart before it ever really comes together. "

interesting: when Obama was sworn in on January 20, 2009, he had nothing better

after Obama's swearing in. And certainly the
imploding economy and DOW he was having to deal with in Feb 2009 and a collapsing GM were all secondary to replacing Bush's-Halliburton's appointments to the MMS.

And even today while Angel and Paul demand MORE
deregulation of the oil industry, filibuster expansion of caps beyond $75 million(Lisa Murkowski), chanted Drill Baby Drill, demand dismantling of the EPA, pushed for liability shield laws, demanded Bailouts of Gulf Coast state govts, tell us that Obama is being UNAMERICAN to to hold BP fincially responsible for this debacle, then that it still must be Obama's fault. No, this isn't just an environmental disaster- this is the worst one in our nation's history- this is to oil spills what Chernobyl was to nuclear incidents- there is no sure end in sight and I bet Chris Cilliza and so many oh his colleagues at the Wapo, NY Times, Boston Globe, etchas a parent, great aunt, or other relative who has retired to the once pristine beaches of Florida- wait till we read the upshot of the ear full they get after the tar is scrubbed from Aunt Bessies new flip flops!
Obama remorse? You bet.

it's pretty optimistic of you to think Obama will lose an election over what is essentially an environmental disaster. Don't forget that a big part of your platform is that people don't care about the environment.

Who is President of the Gulf of Mexico? (corrected sp)

Wait- Does Florida have a lot of Electoral votes President -of all But the Gulf Coast Apparently- Obama?

Today's NY Times

"Sean Snaith, an economist at the University of Central Florida, recently completed a study showing that Florida’s gulf coast could lose 195,000 jobs and $11 billion this year alone if the spill cuts tourism in half.

Florida has a lot to lose, even beyond tourism and fishing. Housing has become increasingly concentrated along the state’s 8,436 miles of shoreline. With property values already down by a third in many areas and unemployment around 12 percent, the state could see its economy darkened for a decade by the spill."

From the article...

"Would Republicans really take that sort of risk in a race where they would be, at best, a longshot under any circumstances?"

What exactly is the risk here? Even if the Republicans were found out, doing this isn't illegal, is it?

And this might be a substantial difference between having Greene and Rawl. Rawl probably has like a 20% chance of beating DeMint. Greene probably has like a 1% chance. This is probably like the Massachusetts election. Against a typical opponent, DeMint almost certainly wins, but he has to actually try. He has to actually campaign. But not against Greene. DeMint doesn't even need to campaign.

No seats are going to flip because of this, but it does make life a little easier for DeMint and that's not nothing. Unless there's some huge downside to getting caught, I don't see why not.

The 538 guy is missing the fact that far fewer voters skip a race when using touch screen systems than with paper ballots or other systems. With a touch screen, you have to do something to move on to the next race, so a lot of people who might just skip over a race about which they have no information on another system just pick a name on the touch screen system.

Vic Rawl ran the worst campaign in the history of elections. Apparently almost no one outside of Charleston knew who he was and according to the Charleston City Paper his main voter contact strategy was robocalls. Please identify his consultants so that no one will ever hire them again.

I don't know. An unemployed man who lives with his parents and didn't even campaign is probably the ultimate political outsider. Greene clearly has a lot in common with the teabaggers, since they too seem to have lots of free time and are often first-time political activists. More in common I'd say than an insider like DeMint. A career politician, current officer holder, and maybe even... FRENCH ("De?" That's no American last name!)? Time to take a good look at who is really the people's candidate here?

You don't want to take personal responsibility for what YOU did to this nation.

The country is stuck with an incompetent, inexperienced and UNQUALIFIED person in there.

If Obama had DONE HIS JOB - AND CLEANED UP THE MINERALS MANAGEMENT SERVICE DURING HIS YEAR-LONG REIEW OF OFFSHORE DRILLING, THIS SPILL WOULD HAVE NEVER HAPPENED.

Yes - the truth is that if Obama was more concerned with GOVERNING INSTEAD OF PUSHING THROUGH HIS FAR LEFT WING AGENDA, the oil spill would have never happened.

Obama went before Congress last fall, and said that he did NOT WANT TO CONCERN HIMSELF WITH THE MUNDANE THINGS, he came to Washington to do other things.

THIS OIL SPILL IS DIRECTLY RELATED TO OBAMA'S EGO - Obama's unwillingness to do his job properly.

Apologize to the marshes.

Apologize to the wetlands.

Apologize to all the people out of work - just because you didn't want to elect the most qualified and experienced person - but one who doesn't have the first idea what to do.

Apologize to the birds.

Their current theories boil down to voting machines manipulated or malfunctioned or Greene listed first on ballot. Crossover Republicans voting for Greene seems to be discounted currently.

This has nothing to do with the statistical analysis, but the best idea is to run down whoever put up the filing fee, and the whole scheme will reveal itself.

No one believes this guy Greene did this on his own.

More nuggets from "libertarian" Ron Paul:

""Boy, it sure burns me to have a national holiday for that pro-communist philanderer Martin Luther King. I voted against this outrage time and time again as a Congressman. What an infamy that Ronald Reagan approved it! We can thank him for our annual Hate Whitey Day."

"Just after a basketball game ended on June 14, blacks poured into the streets of Chicago in celebration. How to celebrate? How else? They broke the windows of stores to loot, even breaking through protective steel shutters with crowbars to steal everything in sight."

"If you live in a major city, you've probably already heard about the newest threat to your life and limb, and your family: carjacking. It is the hip-hop thing to do among the urban youth who play unsuspecting whites like pianos.""

This past March, Casey McCalla wrote an excellent piece for newsone.com about Ron Paul's over-the-top bigotry that includes PDFs of parts of his infamous newsletters.
______________

An excerpt from the article:

"In this piece he criticizes Martin Luther King as a pro-communist philanderer and says the MLK holiday is “Hate Whitey Day.” This is in great contrast to 2008 when he told Wolf Blitzer that Martin Luther King was one of his heroes. When activists suggested naming a city after Martin Luther King Paul suggested other names such as “Welfaria,” “Zooville,” “Rapetown,” “Dirtburg,” and “Lazyopolis.”"

Instead of actually stating the truth - which is that libertarians ACTUALLY WANT AS SMALL A GOVERNMENT AS POSSIBLE - the liberals try to find little things wrong with that idea - in order to reject the whole thing.
---------------------------------------
You don't get it. Liberals (at least the ones with sense) WANT libertarians to describe their ideology.

In grueling, grinding, leeeeeeeeeengthy detail.

All of it: Medicare, social security, education, civil rights, and, yes, even child molesters working in day care centers.

Don't worry about their ideology being rejected for "little things". It will be rejected for little, medium and big things, and ALL things. And laughed and booed off the stage.

If only we could get the libertarians ONTO the stage and get them talking, and talking, and talking...

So what is the mystery about the Democrap Socialist Parties hand-picked nominee Vic Rawl getting beat out by a total unknown candidate Alvin Greene, with no experience and nothing going for him in S.C. Senate race? It's just another example of black racism that exists in the Democrap Socialist Party.
It's not rocket science folks. Vic Rawl is WHITE, and Alvin Greene is BLACK. Blacks have a long history of always voting for a brother/sister and tribal member if the opposing candidate is of another race, no matter who the other non-black candidate is, or--if he/she is running for re-election--how bad the black politico was while he/she was in office.
A few examples that come to mind at the moment are:
*Ray Nagin was re-elected in New Orleans even though he was the primary cause of the Katrina Hurricane screw-up.
*Marion Barry was re-elected Mayor of DC after he got caught smoking crack cocaine with a hooker in a Washington DC Motel Room, in an FBI sting operation.
*Marion Barry served his prison sentence for this crime and still got elected for DC's City Council by the black racists of Washington DC (probably as a "in-your-face-whitey" kind of gesture) after he got out.
*Wilson Goode, Mayor of Philadelphia, Pa. got re-elected by Philly's black racists even though he ordered dropping a bomb from a Police helicopter on a MOVE headquarters, that killed several MOVE members and destroyed 2 blocks of row homes, that caused Philly's taxpayers to re-emburse these residents with several millions of dollars for the destruction.
* William Jefferson, D.Rep. La. was caught with $90,000 of bribe money that he had hidden in his freezer by an FBI sting operation, and still got re-elected by Louisiana's racist black Democraps.
* In the 2008 presidential election America's black racists voted 97% for a totally inexperienced black bro, Barack Obama, with a long history of memberships, affilliations and friendship's with black racist hate--groups, like James Combs's "Black Liberation Front", "Trinity UFCC" led by racist white and America--hater Jerimiah Wright Jr., "The Nation Of Islam", led by racist white and America--hater Louis Farrakhan, and with Communist groups like Frank Marshall Davies's CPUSA (Communist Party USA).
And on, and on.
The bottom line of Alvin Greene's win is that the black racist voters in S.C.'s Democratic Party voted for the black candidate over the white candidate, ONLY because of racial solidarity. It's not rocket science folks!

the person with the biggest problem about being labeled racist is 37th. I wonder why he is so hypersensitive.

If I am labeled racist, I stop and think about it. I would be completely stupid to think that I am not racist, at times and in certain circumstances. We all grew up in a society where whites get the benefit of every doubt. Why wouldn't I ingest some of that innate racism?

I don't fall apart, and scream "MOM, he called me a racist. Make him stop."

I stop and reflect, and try to do better.

To anyone that still doubts the racism and antisemitism, here's something about the infamous Ron Paul Newsletters. Ron Paul, the king of so-called "libertarianism."
________________

"The controversial [Ron Paul] newsletters include rants against the Israeli lobby, gays, AIDS victims and Martin Luther King Jr. -- described as a "pro-Communist philanderer." One newsletter, from June 1992, right after the LA riots, says "order was only restored in L.A. when it came time for the blacks to pick up their welfare checks."

Another says, "The criminals who terrorize our cities -- in riots and on every non-riot day -- are not exclusively young black males, but they largely are. As children, they are trained to hate whites, to believe that white oppression is responsible for all black ills, to 'fight the power,' to steal and loot as much money from the white enemy as possible."

There is so much less racism now - as compared to the 1950s - let's be serious

The next generation is much different.

But to start up with all these affirmative action programs - and to have FALSE CHARGES OF RACISM FLYING ALL OVER THE PLACE - even in a health care debate.

All that sets us all back -

And it DOESN'T put anyone on the road to equality.

To the contrary - the blacks now have the attitude THAT THEY ARE OWED SOMETHING BECAUSE THEY ARE BLACK.

that somehow, money was stolen from their ancestors - and the white people should pay them that money back.

The real problem with racism is with the blacks - not with the whites.

I'm glad to here that you grew up in a segregated place - with no blacks shooting each other - with no black crime - no blacks mugging people - and no blacks breaking into peoples' cars.

Glad to hear you have not had much experience with black crime.

OBAMA WAS IRRESPONSIBLE BY NOT ADDRESSING THE OIL RIG SAFETY ISSUES DURING HIS YEAR LONG REVIEW OF OFF SHORE DRILLING.

Yet, we all sat through Obama's speech - in which he told everyone how smart he was - and how UNPRECEDENTED his energy policy was.

How is that working for you.

THE DEMOCRATS ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR THIS OIL SPILL -

THE DEMOCRATS VOTED FOR AN INEXPERIENCED AND UNQUALIFED PERSON WHO FILLED THE ADMINISTRATION WITH AFFIRMATIVE ACTION PEOPLE WHO NEVER APPLIED THE OIL RIG SAFETY STANDARDS PROPERLY.

The democrats are RESPONSIBLE.

Slowly, the American People are realizing that at the beginning of this crisis - OBAMA DID NOTHING BUT POINT HIS FINGER AT BP.

Clearly that was a sign of guilt. In the first weeks, the media was making fun of the administration officials - all they were doing was going to the Gulf and making speeches which blamed BP.

Obama did little to actually deal with the crisis.

The American People see that Obama's major concern is politics - and the interest of the people come in a far, far second.

Meanwhile - Obama took almost a million dollars from BP - Is he taking that back?

Obama's main race card - calling the oil well a racist - just doesn't seem like it's going to work this time.

Obama looks so weak right now - and it is the fault of the democrats who voted for him -

NOW AMERICA IS IN CRISIS AND WE HAVE NO LEADERSHIP.

Of course, there are a number of "libertarians" who have found what they consider a socially acceptable way to be bigots.

You should read the RCP threads sometimes. There is another brand of libertarian there. Kind of like the ivory tower brand, who have an incredibly naive view of the world. Like the Jim Crow laws were going to fall just minutes after CRA was passed. And, the kind of people who love to live in their heads and have amazingly byzantine arguments about the Constitution, like Talmudic scholars. And who are real binary types: "you are either principled or you're not", or "you're either for freedom, or you're not", for example.

What the later type don't quite realize is that few Americans want their ideology. They seem to think that, because it is LOGICAL (and the coldness of their logic is astounding), it is preferable.

But, you are right, there is a witches brew of straight-out bigots and these naive professor-types marching together in the Libertarian movement.

12, I see it a bit differently.

You start with a bunch of bigoted sociopathic nuts who need some "philosophy" to justify their bigotry. "Libertarianism" is just the ticket for them. The problem is if you carry their libertarian principles to their extreme limits you are forced into idiotic public policies, e.g., having the "liberty" to blow cigarette smoke in someone's face at a restaurant or urinate in an alley.

The Dems have done a TERRIBLE job of publicizing what nuts like Rand Paul and Sharron Angle actually stand for. Historians will you tell this rhetoric is the same of that of the old Dixiecrats of the 50s and the George Wallace-ites of the 60s--they, too, justified their intolerance with states' rights and libertarian arguments.

Let's stop all the speculation surrounding this whole mess and look at the facts . . .
Vic Rawl DID campaign, he won the vast majority of absentee votes (cast on paper not on a machine). There needs to be a serious investigation into the voting machines and voter irregularities.
Rawl traveled all across the state, received contributions, sent out 300,000 emails, 250,000 robo calls from Sen. John Spratt, and attended over 80 events.
Rawl was not a complete unknown (unlike Greene) in SC, he was a well-respected judge and pillar of the community. The question we should be asking is "Who is Vic Rawl?" and take a look at his career and what QUALIFIES him to be a US Senator . . .and how South Carolinians are being robbed of a viable opponent to DeMint.

@drindl,

Then, while the RCP libertarians were thinking about children, that reminded them of education. So they segued into how education is NOT a right. Education, as a right, would indicate that someone would have to pay for it, who doesn't have the right to object. And, the theory goes, no one has a right to someone else's labor. So, the logical inference is that education is a privilege for those who can pay.

Lord, how can we get the libertarians to trumpet their views EVERYWHERE and ALWAYS, with the biggest megaphone ever invented?

@drindl,

Over at Real Clear Politics, there was a thread yesterday where the resident libertarians engaged in a lively debate. One poster said that the government had no business banning sex'ual predators from working in day care businesses. The argument is that these businesses would either 1) not hire sex'ual predators or 2) would go out of business when their clients found out.

Another poster, in complete disbelief, pointed out that a day care operator might be motivated to hire his nephew, just out of the joint; or wouldn't bother to find out someone's criminal record, if there was no penalty involved; or simply would pay the predator $2 less per hour.

Doesn't matter, say the libertarians. Some things are more important than protecting children--where in the Constitution does it say that children are protected? Besides, unless the predator kills the child, the Constitution only talks about life, liberty and pursuit of happiness. Molestation isn't any of those three, say the libertarians.

I kid you not.

unfortunately the practice of voting for
the first name on the ballot, white, black, etc is too commonplace and has nothing to do with race, its uninformed voting but it happens all the time. What we have seen here in Harris County however is a pattern of
voting against very well qualified, well funded and well run candidates with candidates with foreign sounding indian and middle east sounding names losing for which many local political analysts believe is for racial reasons, usually to less qualified poorly run candidates with names like Jones, Smith, Green etc. That is just a poltical reality. As I read the post no one is suggesting that black voters are lazy, in reality most all voters of every background share that distinction.

"Explaining Alvin Greene"

Why? So you and your pals can make fun of some disturbed unemployed black guy who is being used?

This is so obviously a political dirty trick as Clyburn said. An unemployed guy doesn't spend $10,000 on a political race.

Your explanation #3 is patently racist: blacks voted for Greene figuring if his name was "Greene," he was black. How did you bring yourself to type that? Did Chip or Tucker help? Are you any relation to the white guy in the movie "Soul Man" who keeps teiling black jokes, and when called on it, always says "Nothing personal"?

Why not NAME the "long time Democratic strategist" if he is so proud of his "analysis"? If he even exists.

In fact, #2 sounds racist and silly as well: blacks voted for Greene because he was first on the ballot and they couldn't muster enough mental energy to check out the guy listed second. What?????

In a way this is more offensive than the infamous Milbank/Fix Hillary video.
___________

The better approach is to get Mr. Greene professional help and pray for him.

Clyburn is barking up the wrong tree. He should be looking at the teabaggers (particularly the most racist ones). Look at what THEY gain from this debacle:

They want to see the 17th amendment repealed so that only state legislators can vote for US senators. What better way to prove that the public is incompetent than if a man with a background like Greene's wins the Democratic primary for the US senate? With Greene winning the primary, the teabaggers not only 'prove' the inability of voters to make sound decisions, they also show up the incompetency of the democratic party in not vetting all their candidates. They can also boast that just as Obama only won because he had millions of 'ignorant black people' voting for him, this is an illustration of 'the same' here. And to sweeten the deal, the teabaggers can sound off on the fact that Greene had been on unemployment for over nine months yet owned a shiny SUV and had over ten grand to spend on his registration. More proof that government programs should be de-funded cause everyone who's on them is really a fraud.

To help insure that Greene wins of course, they hack into what is the most vulnerable of all voting systems in America; the touch-screen no-paper-trail black box; so vulnerable that a high school kid could hack into it. They could easily tabulate the votes to insure that Rawl never gets more votes than Greene.

All that's left to do is sit back and gloat. Another black man is unveiled by the media to be stupid and/or mentally incompetent, as well as a sexual predator, a parasite and a fraud. And at no time is Jim DeMint's future ever threatened.

The teabaggers are right that so many of our systems are screwed up. But that's because people like them can exploit it so easily.

If you've got an hour or so, you can find a town hall he did where he just crumbles to the simplest questions about his policy as well as the prevailing theme as to why he is running as a Democrat.

Greene was unintelligible on Hardball last

this unemployed man came up with the $5000

where he came up with the 5 grand? Lets ask
him to take a lie detector; this scam on
par with the New Hampshire GOP jamming of Jeanne Shahean's campaign telephone lines on election day.
What is truly patehtic is that Demint will
