Pennsylvania Senate ad wars begin

After months of waiting -- and, in some circles, hoping -- Pennsylvania Sen. Arlen Specter and Rep. Joe Sestak are now on television in advance of their May 18 primary shown down in the Keystone State.

While Specter had been up on television for the last week with ads that tout his accomplishments for the state, Sestak, the well-funded but little-known challenger, held his ad fire until today -- when he launched a 60-second commercial aimed at introducing himself to voters.

The ad, produced by the Campaign Group, hits all of the high points of Sestak's considerable resume: naval officer, Clinton Administration official, congressman.

In the commercial, Sestak details his daughter's fight with a brain tumor and how it compelled him to run for office in 2006. He then pivots to make his pitch as an outsider to the political process -- drawing a subtle but unquestioned contrast with Specter; "If we want real change in Washington, we can't keep sending the same career politicians to represent us," Sestak says in a clear echo of President Obama's rhetorical messaging during the 2008 campaign.

Specter, who has built a reputation for his willingness to play hardball, immediately launched an ad slamming Sestak and designed to step all over the positive press the challenger might get from the start of his ad campaign.

Wow. Subtle it's not but effective it may well be. Among the charges leveled in the ads: that Sestak was relieved of duty in the Navy for creating a "poor command climate" and that the two-term Congressman has missed 127 votes, a total among the highest absentee rate among any Member of Congress.

"Let's say no to 'No Show Joe'," the narrator urges at ad's end. (No Show Joe! It's no "Kay Bailout" but it's good.)

Specter's strategy here is simple: kill Sestak's candidacy before it has a chance to grow. It will be interesting to see if Sestak immediately responds with a negative commercial of his own -- he has enough money in the bank ($5 million) to run both positive and negative ads simultaneously -- or just sticks with the "getting to know you" ad for a few days.

At first blush, the Sestak campaign went for the shame strategy against Specter. "It's disappointing that after 30 years in Washington, Arlen Specter can't run on his own accomplishments," said Sestak spokesman Jonathan Dworkin.

What's we do know: It. Is. On.

This campaign has finally gotten as nasty as we all knew it would. Specter is doing a pretty good job staying ahead of the game by defining Sestek as Sestek is just now trying to defind himself. Sestek has the money to portray himself as a good man and strong advocate for Pa. as well as former Naval officer and family man while bashing Specter as a party switching political opportunist who would be running as a Republican if he thought he could have beaten out Toomey for the R nomination. Sestek can also tie Specter to Bush and Santorum, even running old commercials of Santorum endorsing Specter in the 2004 primary spot. I can see it now: Santorum says "Arlen Specter, he's with us on all of the big things." Then the narrorator for Sestek says "Really, Arlen Specter is with Rick "man on dog" Santorum and George Bush on the big things." This is not the Democrat we need in congress to lead Pennsylvania. That would be very effective in the D primary. On the other side Specter is already bashing Sestek on missing votes, being a poor Naval officer and being absent when he's needed most. This primary is going to come down to the wire and Pat Toomey is going to love it.

Sestak is the stronger democrat for the general election, but he won't get the chance. Specter will do anything to stay in power. The most important values in Specter's life are money and power. He's a sad individual, and deserves to be defeated.

I have a broad view of Civil Rights - however I believe it will hold up in Court.

I have spoken to many people about this as well.

Civil Rights include Freedom of Speech - so ANY EFFORT TO INTIMIDATE AMERICAN CITIZENS INTO NOT FREELY EXERCISING THEIR RIGHTS IS A VIOLATION OF CIVIL RIGHTS.

Leveling FALSE CHARGES OF RACISM - when one doesn't know the individuals or when one does not have any individual action to based that charge on - is AN EFFORT TO INTIMIDATE.

The idea is to smear an entire group - to DISCOURAGE THE FREEDOM OF SPEECH.

This is the RESPONSE TO COLBERT KING AND EUGENE ROBINSON - WHO HAVE TAKEN IT UPON THEMSELVES TO LEVEL THESE CHARGES ON INDIVIDUALS WITHOUT A BASIS.

Go ahead fight with me.

I think Republicans are kind of moving away from McCain because the race is so close. Otherwise they'd be embracing him as much as Palin has.

I haven't seen much of Heyworth, but the guy strikes me as creepy. Obviously someone like Rubio in Florida is an extremist, but at least the guy is charismatic. Heyworth seems anything but.

You know, from this point, a conservative revival and a Republican death spiral look the same. I don't know that Arizona and Florida are the best labs to conduct experiments in batsh*t crazy.

As for the topic of the thread, the Republicans should have hung on to Specter. I'm no expert on Pennsylvania demographics, but these ideological purges usually don't end well.

==

Especially since those candidates they find acceptable, the ones who survive the purges, tend to be unacceptable to voters. Look what a nutjob they chose in Doug Hoffman, an Attack Chipmunk* and social conservative caveman.

And don't think for a minute that an ascendant Tea Party wouldn't want the criteria of their purges made into law, like the Allegiance Accords in "V for Vendetta." That's the echo behind Palin's "real Americans."

HOW ARE WE GOING TO GET THESE TAXES DOWN ???

You do realize our only chance to get a high-growth economy is to have low taxes.

The more taxes, the more we choke off growth.

It is pretty simple.

The basic truth is that 5% of the population lost their jobs - you can blame who you want - Bush who was fighting two wars - or Clinton who deregulated derivatives and who appointed the bunch of the Fannie Mae and Freddie mac appointees.

The question is HOW DO WE GET JOBS BACK TO THAT 5% WHO LOST THEIR JOBS???

We need a LOW TAX, HIGH GROWTH ECONOMY - IT IS THE ONLY WAY TO GROW JOBS.

With Obama's taxes, companies have little incentive to hire - they have less money.

We need to concentrate on Jobs - ironically that will bring in more tax revenue -

We have to stop the Obama taxes - and LET THE ECONOMY BREAK FREE FROM THE OBAMA TAXES.

Haley Barbour is right about that. I don't know why they're savaging McCain. The Democrats have large majorities because they captured the moderate areas of the country. These are always competitive, but the candidate has to be a fit with the voters. The moderates don't drive the bus, but they decide who's going to. Nancy Pelosi is in charge because people like Heath Schuler (sp?) carried their districts.

In those days, it was common for the grandparents to post birth notices. People in those days actually read the birth notices to know what was happening in the community. Also notices were posted in the church bulletins. Was Obama baptised ?

How old was Ann Dunham, Obama's mother at birth 16 or 17? -

It is completely logical that a 16 or 17 wouldn't be sending money to a newspaper for a birth notice - this was probably one of her parents putting the notice in the paper.

Did they use the grandparent's address? If their daughter was out of the country, I don't think they would list the daughter's address as in Keyna - they would put the Hawaii address there.

PLEASE NOTE - DOES THE birth notice in the paper list a hospital where the baby was born?

I tell you what we DO HAVE - we have Obama's grandmother SAYING THAT OBAMA WAS BORN IN KEYNA - THE TAPE IS ON THE INTERNET AND THE TRANSLATION IS CLEAR.

We two people in Obama's family giving the names OF TWO SEPARATE HOSPITALS IN WHICH Obama was supposedly born - CLASSIC CASE THAT THEY DON'T HAVE THEIR STORIES STRAIGHT.

WE ALSO KNOW THE DEMOCRATIC MACHINE started to float the idea of a lawsuit in which Obama CHALLENGED THE CONSITUTIONAL DEFINITION OF "NATURAL BORN."

That is PRETTY CERTAIN PROOF that they democratic operatives somewhere were preparing for an ISSUE.

All I am saying is RELEASE THE FILES.

RELEASE THE FILES. STOP HIDING.

END THE DISCUSSION - IT WILL CONTINUE UNTIL EVERYONE SEES WHAT IS IN THE FILES.

OBAMA CAN SIGN A RELEASE IN ONE MINUTE AND END THIS WHOLE THING - RELEASE THE FILE AT THE HAWAII DEPT OF HEALTH, ASK THE HOSPITALS TO RELEASE THEIR RECORDS - AND SIGN A RELEASE TO RELEASE ALL THE COLLEGE AND GRADUATE SCHOOL RECORDS.

STOP HIDING.

RELEASE THE RECORDS. OPEN THE FILES.

SORT OF SOUNDS LIKE AN OBAMA CAMPAIGN COMMITMENT TRANSPARENCY?

I submitted a medium-length piece in the 'dislike government' thread yesterday evening quoting and commenting on some of the thread's earlier posts. It went straight to the moderator for scrutiny and was never posted. Since not one of the responses was a tenth as offensive as the quotes to which I responded, I have no idea what the problem might have been.

==

Might simply have been too long; the limit if is 4000 characters, a single typewritten page single-speced.

Or it might be an inadvertent banned word; I had one rejected for a typo on the word "like," using the keyboard-adjacent K for the first letter.

The banned word thing is a little stupid. It's easy to circumvent and a lot of words that are legal or a hell of a lot worse than some of the illegal ones.

But in any case it's a good idea to keep posts short and to the point. It's not easy on the eyes to read in a browser, it takes some specific font presentation stuff like the Kindle applications use to read more than a few paragraphs comfortably.

It went straight to the moderator for scrutiny and was never posted. Since not one of the responses was a tenth as offensive as the quotes to which I responded, I have no idea what the problem might have been.

I have no interest in spamming or cutting and pasting here from other sites, nor do I wish to waste time providing relevant responses that simply disappear into the ether. So, hereafter, I will limit myself to the occasional brief snippet of the sort of insipid nonsense, evidently favored by the moderator, that seems to pass for political discourse here.

If you can't beat 'em, join 'em. We'll save the weightier stuff for some other forum.

There is something wrong with the system - the party establishments have too much power - the money has too much power relative to the people - there must be a better way.

Most importantly, the people DO have a right (read - proper standing) to ask who and what their president really is, in any court, any time. And soldiers are court-martialed for refusing orders, unless those orders were issued by an illegitimate Commander-in-Chief.

DC knows what most Americans have yet to figure out…

Obama is NOT a natural born citizen no matter where he might have been born. Obama’s birth father was at no time an American citizen and on this basis alone, Obama cannot be a constitutionally qualified resident of the White House.

They know something else that the American people have yet to figure out…

The US Constitution no longer stands as the governing law of this land. Obama’s many unconstitutional policies, Czars, executive orders and statements provide the proof, and the fact that nobody in DC cares whether or not Obama is constitutionally qualified to be president of the United States should send a shiver down the spine of every red blooded American citizen, no matter their partisan agendas.

The people willing to ask the tough questions are deemed crackpots and conspiracy theorists, racists or bigots. But those tough questions should be obvious questions to all Americans and every president should have to answer those questions, no matter race, creed, color or party affiliation.

I fear that those questions will only be answered at the tip of pitch forks and torches one day. Sooner or later, the people will run out of patience with a system built to exclude them. When that day comes, I fear what methods will be employed and whether or not there will be a country left to save by then.

But sooner or later, one way or another, Obama will have to answer those questions. One day, the world will know who and what this man is and there will be a day of reckoning like no other in American history.

The longer it takes for that day to arrive, the more dangerous the situation will become. A man not even qualified to hold the office is using that office to destroy the greatest nation on earth. How much patience can the people be expected to display?

Obama is not eligible for the office he currently holds and everyone in a position to know - already know.

What they don’t know is how much longer they can keep it all a secret, or what will happen next.

Now an eighteen year veteran flight surgeon and active Lt. Colonel faces court martial as he makes his demands for proof that Obama is constitutionally eligible to issue orders as Commander-in-Chief.

Obama’s entire domestic, foreign and national defense agenda has proven to be wholly anti-American
Obama’s entire domestic, foreign and national defense agenda has proven to be wholly anti-American on every possible level. Still, the answers concerning who and what Barack Hussein Obama Jr. really is remain elusive in the face of unprecedented efforts to ask the right questions.

No matter who asks, how they ask or where they ask, not one single individual in Washington DC or even state government seems willing to weigh in on the most important issue of our era. Who and what is the man sitting in the people’s White House?

How in the hell did we get an overtly anti-American resident of the people’s White House without so much as a simple birth certificate to prove who this person really is?

And why won’t a single elected representative of the people engage in the effort to force an answer to this question?

The answers to these and many more questions are likely very simple and equally chilling…

The Speaker of the House does not refuse to certify her candidate as “constitutionally qualified” in forty-nine of fifty states by accident
Nobody spends $2 million in legal fees to hide an authentic birth certificate. The Speaker of the House does not refuse to certify her candidate as “constitutionally qualified” in forty-nine of fifty states by accident. A press that knew he was the “first Kenyan born senator” didn’t forget that he was Kenyan born when he decided to run for president.

Whereas the RNC filed the exact same certification document, including the constitutional text for John McCain in all 50 states, Obama was technically certified in only one state, Hawaii. A mere inconvenient technicality, I’m sure…

The US Congress knows that Barack Hussein Obama is not constitutionally qualified for the office he holds. Although the congress passed a resolution proclaiming Senator John McCain a “natural born citizen” as the son of two US citizens, no such congressional resolution exists for Barack Hussein Obama.

The press knows that Obama is not a “natural born citizen,” having written on several occasions about the “Kenyan born” senator from Chicago. A number of citizens have already been arrested and jailed for asking these questions.

Over four-hundred law suits have been filed across the country asking the courts to force Obama to become the “transparent president” he promised to be, and all four-hundred are being dismissed before discovery, all on the basis that “no citizen has proper legal standing” to ask who and what their president really is…

Over a half-million citizens have now signed a petition demanding to see Obama’s birth records.

Numerous members of the US Military have refused deployment orders from Obama, on the basis that he refuses to evidence his constitutional qualifications to issue such orders. In most cases, the soldiers have simply been reassigned, so as to avoid any disciplinary action that could end in “defense discovery” which might finally force Obama to open up his files once and for all.

DC Knows that Obama is Ineligible for Office
By JB Williams

Members from all three branches of the Federal government already know that Barack Hussein Obama is ineligible for the office of President. National leaders, to include members of the US Supreme Court, already know that Barack Hussein Obama is not a “natural born citizen” of the United States of America, and therefore, is ineligible for the office he currently holds.

What they don’t know is how long it will take for most Americans to figure it out, or what to do about it.

The diversionary search for an authentic birth certificate is ongoing and Obama has now spent in excess of $2 million in legal fees to keep that search alive.

Eric Holder’s Department of Justice continues to deploy taxpayer funded attorneys around the country to file dismissals on behalf of Obama, denying all American citizens access to the courts as a peaceful remedy, which only fuels the fire of discontent and the questions about Obama persist.

Michelle Obama states that Kenya is Barack’s “home country.” She knows, after twenty years with Barack. The Ambassador or Kenya has confirmed the same His family friends all know it, and are in fact quite proud of the fact that Americans had no hesitation in electing a “black man from Kenya” as President of the United States.

The US Supreme Court knows what the constitutional condition of “natural born citizen” means. Even the most far left member of that court, Justice Ginsberg, is on record proclaiming that a “natural born citizen” is a birth child of TWO legal US citizens.

Democrat Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi knows that Barack Hussein Obama is not eligible for the office of president, which is why she refused to certify the following language when certifying Obama as the DNC candidate for president in 2008.

This is the normal language for certification of nomination for president and vice president, filed by the DNC only in the state of Hawaii…

http://canadafreepress.com/index.php/article/22221

This is the language filed by the DNC in the other 49 states, however…

http://canadafreepress.com/index.php/article/22221

Note that the language which certifies that Barack Hussein Obama meets all constitutional qualifications is missing in the DNC documents filed in 49 of the 50 states. The certification of constitutional qualification for the office of president was filed only in Hawaii. That text is missing in the DNC certification filings for all other states.

If you make a comment about a tea party person, and you don't know that person, or have an act on their party to base a conclusion on - if YOU call them a racist, then YOU ARE PRE-JUDGING THAT PERSON.

That makes YOU PREJUDICED -

I agree with your comment about Pennsylvania preferring moderates.

I'm in Sestak's 7th District (Oaks, PA). I'm a moderate.

The issue I have is that Joe Sestak has been one of the most true-blue party line voters (voting with his party 97.8% of the time). When he was elected in 2006, it was the first time since the CIVIL WAR that a Democrat has represented this district.

Joe Sestak's voting record is not representative of this district (though it does differentiate from the moderate position of Specter).

We don't need more polarized politicians in DC.

I don't know if going negative in the beginning is a good idea for Specter, but it very well may nip Sestak's canidacy in the bud. If this does work well then I would expect to see this same strategy from a bunch of incumbents in the future.

Imagine if Crist had come out swinging on Rubio from Day one. He would most likely still be a republican and cruising towards an almost certain victory in November.

Pennsylvania tends to vote for moderates--Specter the long-time liberal Republican, others like Bob Casey Sr. and Jr., conservative Democrats. Rick Santorum was not re-elected because he was too conservative for the state; Sestak may well be too liberal for state-wide office from Pennsylvania. Specter has recently left a bad taste in the mouth of a lot of Pennsylvanians, but Sestak is probably not the alternative most of us are looking for.
