A Big Loss for the GOP in Rhode Island

Former Rhode Island Attorney General Sheldon Whitehouse (D) ousted Sen. Lincoln Chafee (R), bringing Demoocratic gains in the Senate to 3.

Republicans had grown increasingly optimistic about Chafee's chances in the final few days, but ultimately voters in this strongly Democratic seat could not bring themselves to pull the lever for Chafee.

Chafee joins Sens. Rick Santorum (R-Pa.) and Mike DeWine (R-Ohio) on the sidelines.

The races to watch now in the fight for control of the Senate are in Missouri, Tennessee, Montana and Virginia.

Democrats have now pulled off a clean sweep in Indiana, winning three Republican-held seats. Rep. Mike Sodrel (R) is the latest victim, falling short to former Rep. Baron Hill (D) in the state's 9th District. Rep. Nancy Johnson (R) has also lost her reelection bid in Connecticut's 5th District. That brings Democratic gains to 5 seats -- one third of the seats they need to claim the House majority.
