The sound of Sharron Angle's silence

Former Nevada state assemblywoman Sharron Angle (R) made her Washington debut Tuesday, a largely muted -- literally -- appearance that offered few clues about the woman who will challenge Senate Majority Leader Harry M. Reid this fall.

In Angle's only interaction with the press -- a minute-long chase throughout the halls of the Capitol -- Angle uttered a single word: "Yes."

Angle made her first stop at the Senate Republicans' weekly luncheon as the guest of scandal-tarred Sen. John Ensign (R-Nev.) -- a fact that had to have GOP strategists grimacing in displeasure. Clad in a dark purple suit, she did not address reporters on her way in, entering the Lyndon B. Johnson room after noon.

In the hour-and-a-half that Angle remained at the luncheon, which was closed to the press, the only indications of what was happening in the room were three short rounds of applause shortly after one o'clock.

At about a quarter to two, a door opened and a beaming Angle walked out, accompanied by the National Republican Senatorial Committee executive director, Rob Jesmer, who took her down a back stairway accessible to Senators only.

About a dozen reporters peppered Angle with questions as she sped through the halls of the Capitol.

"Why aren't you talking to us?" one asked.

Her only comment came in response to a question about whether she was happy with the reception she'd received from Republican senators gathered at the luncheon.

"Yes," Angle said, smiling, and then walked on.

Unlike Kentucky Senate nominee Rand Paul (R), who made a full round of TV appearances following his landslide win, with disastrous results when he seemed to express interest in re-litigating the tenets of the Civil Right Acts, Angle has for the most part dodged the mainstream media since her resounding win in last week's primary; her only major TV appearance on her current visit was an appearance on "Fox and Friends" Monday morning.

After the luncheon, Ensign deflected a question about Angle's strategy of not talking to the press.

"She's going to run her own campaign," Ensign said. "This is a person who came out of nowhere and won handily in the campaign, and it shocked a lot of people. But right now, as I said before, she's an outsider. That's a good thing to be this year."

Ensign also defended Angle against Democrats' claims that her record is outside the mainstream.

"They're going to try to portray her, certainly, in a way that I don't think the average American would look at it," Ensign said. "I think that a lot of her positions, the average American will look at them and go, 'Geez, that looks pretty reasonable.' She's against spending. She's against taxes. Right now, that's a pretty popular position in America."

(To reiterate: The LAST person Senate Republicans want to be the face of the Angle visit to Washington is Ensign, who continues to cling to office despite revelations regarding an extramarital affair with a former staffer surfaced last June.)

Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), who also attended the luncheon, said he was confident that Angle could beat Reid.

"The people of Nevada are tired of him," McCain said of Reid. "At least, that's what I hear."

Angle is expected to attend a meeting at the National Republican Senatorial Committee Tuesday afternoon and will be a guest Wednesday at a breakfast sponsored by Americans for Tax Reform's Grover Norquist.

Maybe the questions weren't worth answering.

Just be happy she's not a Democrat, she would have put you in headlocks. But then, liberals do tend to be prone to violence.

"The war is lost" Harry Reid, D

That's all I need to remember about Reid to vote for ANYONE else.

He defecated on us in time of war while playing frak-frak partisan games safe in his little world while we fought and bled.

Armagedon, I'm trying to nderstand why you are putting so much credence in the quote of someone from the Czech Republic whose own government is less than adequate to meets the needs of its own people. I'm reminded of the saying "those in glass houses sholdn't throw stones." Also it is easy to criticize and demonize but constructive criticism and positive suggestions can get things done.

Anger and name calling are the weapons of a weak, bankrupt thouhgt process. And that goes for all side of the political spectrum

I had to chuckle when I read Senator McCain's comments. This coming from the guy that chose Mrs. Palin to run for vice-president. In my mind any candidate he endorses ia automatically disqualified from serious consideration. Also it strikes me that Senator McCain should be more concerned about keeping his seat rather than ruminating on anyother Senator's chances for re-election.

I don't know what kind of tea these people are drinking. McCain disgraced any sense of competency he tried to project when he failed to vet Palin. Palin failed her electorate by quitting her job. And this one makes the Mad Hatter look sane.

These people should be hauled off to jail for felonious stupidity.

An electorate that supports them demonstrates the failure of public education in this country, a democracy where just over 50% even bother to vote, in a good year.

The Tea Party demonstration in Reid's home town looked impressive until the camera backed off and showed them to be who they really are... a laughable noisy annoying small crowd of idiots that could fit on an average school bus with a couple of seats to spare.

If the democrats want higher taxes, why don't they just send their monty to the government, and leave the rest of us alone

Think the joke is on you...has anyone noticed that President Obama hasn't raised our taxes(for anything)? 95% of Americans got a tax cut in January this year, so cut out the lies trying to make people believe otherwise(we're not stupid enough not to know what we get in our paychecks!) And President Obama seems to be insuring that BP pays for their mess, instead of the taxpayers...thanks President Obama! "It is best to avoid the bias media. They will be as unfair to her as they are the rest of the Conservatives, Republicans because they only like Liberals, Progressives & Democrats. She needs to only do interviews on Fox in which she will be treated fairly."

It has nothing to do with media treatment. All Reid has to do is trot out her "crazy" statements of the past to demonstrate what kind of a nut case she really is. She's an oath keeper. Heard one of these "oath keepers" recently on the local conservative talk radio show here in Harrisburg, PA. They guy actually said that local sheriff's should have the authority to arrest federal officials if, in his opinion, they are violating the constitution. Imagine that - the county sheriff becomes the judge and jury. The bottom line is that these folks are stark, raving nuts who consider their own legitimately elected federal government the enemy. Please watch the Chris Matthews special tomorrow at 7:00 p.m. eastern MSNBC on the Rise of the Far Right. I'm sure it will be very revealing. Do you really think Sharron Angle can hide out on Fox all election year? What does this say about her as a candidate? That's she afraid to face up to and explain her oppositon to floridation; her massage program for convicts; her other John Birch Society positions? These far right extremists really do scare the hell out of me.

Unions and government workers are rioting all over Southern Europe. Regular citizens are tired of being beat up by organized labor. Citizens income drops while union and government workers strike for higher taxes and sweethart benefit packages. Citizens are feeling the tyrany of union and government mandates. Government threatens to close down productive people unless they contribute to and support government mandates. In short their governments have morphed into oppressors. Marxists and Communists chiefs are circulating in for the final kill. Governments borrowed until they ran out of lenders. Now those who expected growing government handouts are enraged and prepared to bring down the governments who are responsible for huge national debts. The debts will still be owed but will the citizens who received government freebees prefer war over paying back the money they owe. In the past liberal progressive mobs have choosen war.

hahahahahahahahahahahaha

you have now sufficiently bastardized the English language. Aplomb. Good one.

a·plomb   /əˈplɒm, əˈplʌm/ Show Spelled[uh-plom, uh-pluhm] Show IPA
–noun
1. imperturbable self-possession, poise, or assurance.
2. the perpendicular, or vertical, position.
Origin:
1820–30; < F à plomb according to the plummet, i.e., straight up and down, vertical position

—Synonyms
1. composure, equanimity, imperturbability.

—Antonyms
1. confusion, discomposure; doubt, uncertainty.

Spineless Harry has aplomb. the war is lost. tourists are smelly. nice negro.

Try this. Define the Obungler adminstration:

confusion, discomposure; doubt, uncertainty.

Looks like berry is the anti-aplomb.

Sharron Angle is a politician. That means she will get on camera whenever she can. Silent politicians become defeated politicians. She gets the call from the Party. She starts ducking the press. She goes to Washington, confers with the Republicans--she comes out and ducks the press. Now, do you think the Republicans told her to dummy up? Sure, they did.

Now, you only have to ask why. For the same reason she took her website down. Because they want to give her a whole new personality and scrub her platform before she gets national exposure. And why? Is it because she will be such a darling on the national stage?

She *might* play in Nevada, but it's clear her own party doesn't think she'll play nationally.

For them, Social Security and Medicare are Socialism/Communism, taxes are socialism, public schools are socialism. Industry can regulate itself (as demonstrated by BP). ______________________

"Here's another one that could be tough for Sharron Angle to explain away: In an interview in January, Angle appeared to float the possibility of armed insurrection if "this Congress keeps going the way it is."

I'm not kidding. In an interview she gave to a right-wing talk show host, Angle approvingly quoted Thomas Jefferson saying it's good for a country to have a revolution every 20 years -- and said that if Congress keeps it up, people may find themselves resorting to "Second Amendment remedies."

What's more, the talk show host she spoke to tells me he doesn't have any doubt that she was floating the possibility of armed insurrection as a valid response if Congress continues along its current course."

As soon as she does an interview with a real journalist or a debate with Mr. Reid--and it'll have to happen in NV sometime soon--she'll be asked to explain,

a) her positions on her previous web site (http://doctorjesse.files.wordpress.com/2010/06/elect-sharron-angle-republican-for-u-s.pdf)

and b) why she felt a need to drastically modify those positions now?

One the day of the Scott Brown - Marsha Coakley senate election in Massachusetts, WaPo hacks published an article calling the race "a dead heat" and "too close to call". WaPo referred to a Daily Kos poll that called the race "a tie".

Rasmussen's final poll predicted Scott Brown would win by nine points.

Senator Scott Brown won the election by about seven points.

It is terrifically sad that Max Cleland blew off his own limbs with an American hand grenade during the Vietnam War.

However that tragic story has nothing to do with the the fact that Harry the horse's asp Reid has a 33% job approval rating among Nevadan; nor that Angle leads Reid the Democrat by +11 points in the latest poll.

Harry the horse's asp Reid will be ousted from the U.S. Senate in 140 days.

I am fascinated that people who claim to be "just one of the people" and who want to "take our government back for the people" are spending all their post-primary victory time (a) avoiding saying anything to the people and (b) spending a lot of time with political consultants and power brokers learning how to avoid saying anything true to the people because, well, then those namby pamby media people (who, obviously, are not people) will just twist it around.

In other words, they're learning how to be members of the political elite they so despise! My, how short that was!

Lets face the FACTS: Republicans (Bush, Gingritch, Beck, Limbaugh, Hannety, Bauchman, etc. etc. or this Sharron Angle) have been and are utter complete lunatics.

To be exact not all Republicans lunatics, some of them, less than 1%, are actually very very smart, more on this below.

So to be exact what when we say that Republicans are lunatics what this means is that Republicans are agents of the Top Brass of Big corporations (Big Pharma, Big Insurance, Big Military, Big Banks, etc. aka Wall Street Gang) who are making $40Mill per year and flying in $50Mill private Jets, and as such they have been part of one of the Ultimate Con Jobs in the history of man kind, perpetrated on the American people, for the last many decades. The purpose of which Con Job are the following 2 Key objectives:
1- To give American people as little as possible for the Taxes that we pay,
2- To enable the Wall Street Gang and their Agents to get as rich as they can off the back of the American middle class (people) by not having the Government (of the People by the People for the People) regulate what they can do for the benefit of the People, such as regulate them from charging criminal level interest rates of 20%, or have Universal nationalized health care, as they have in ALL Europeans countries, Canada, Japan, Australia, etc.

And to get away with this Ultimate Con Job, Republicans have been saying any insane thing, any lunatic thing, no matter how senseless and lunatic, such as:
1- "Government cannot do anything..."
2- "Government is the problem not the solution..."
3- "People distrust the Government more than they dislike big business (aka Wall Street)"

Which translated means:
1- You the People cannot do anything, since this is supposed to be the "Government of the People by the People for the People"
2- Pay about 40% of your income in Taxes and get almost nothing for your Taxes
3- Only the Rich & Big corporations "can do things... and are the solution...." IF we can brain wash you people to believe that the Government of the People cannot do anything... and thus the Con Job is complete.

According to polls, McCain may be right about most people in Nevada being "tired" of Reid. But Angle's nomination is a gift to him, Obama and the Democratic majority in the Senate.

Right-wing Republicans seem to be doing their level best to limit their party's Senate net gains to only two or three seats. Had they nominated relatively moderate candidates, they could be poised to win a net six or seven seats. Of course, after the elections with their disappointed gains, Republicans will be asking why.

Angle is just another clueless Palin.

Posted by: truth1 | June 15, 2010 5:11 PM | Report abuse

Angle will prove to be as devastating to the Republican Party as Palin--maybe even worse. She may not be talking to the press, but there's nothing she can do to live down supporting "Second Amendment solutions" if Congress didn't do what (she thinks) people want. That's advocating violent overthrow of the government. It's probably against the law, for that matter. (And before you people who think you know the Constitution come back with "free speech," there are limits on free speech.

Posted by: jlhare1 | June 15, 2010 5:09 PM | Report abuse

Incidentally, anyone remember how badly this strategy fared with Sarah Palin? She refused to do any interviews at the start of her candidacy and it led to her opponents having free reign to define her. Eventually McCain's campaign realized this wasn't going to work and put her out there.

Of course that wasn't all that hot either.

But one thing is that Angle is running against Reid, not Obama. Versus Obama, McCain needed to win. Versus Reid, it might be sufficient to simply not lose and to limp across the finish line. But if she allows her opponents to define her (and she has lots of material) then she is in big trouble.

Think about Bob McDonnell. If he did not get out there and fight back when the news of his grad school thesis surfaced, he'd have been in trouble. Angle doesn't have a single thesis as far as we know, but she has several statements from her past and these statements will lead to the narrative of her being insane if she doesn't come back to fight it.

Maybe it is time to end the "anchor baby" problem.

Congress should pass a law - a Constitutional amendment if necessary - which states that if a non-US citizen has a baby on US soil, the baby does not get US citizenship.

The ORIGINAL INTENT of the Constitutional Amendment dealing with this issue was to give former slaves and their children citizenship (which I do not object to.)

However, that provision is NOW being applied to ILLEGAL ALIENS - and that part should be repealed.

THE ORIGINAL INTENT of the writers of that Amendment was NOT to extend citizenship rights to the children of illegal aliens.

So, from a strict constructionist point of view - a constitutional amendment is probably not necessary.

BUT LETS GET ONE ANYWAY -

HOW ABOUT THAT RAISING ARIZONA ???

"The danger to America is not Barack Obama but a citizenry capable of entrusting a man like him with the Presidency. It will be far easier to limit and undo the follies of an Obama presidency than to restore the necessary common sense and good judgment to a depraved electorate willing to have such a man for their president. The problem is much deeper and far more serious than Mr. Obama, who is a mere symptom of what ails America. Angle favors the violent overthrow of our lawfully elected government and the assassination of Harry Reid, and apparently the Republican Party supports her in this:

" You know, our Founding Fathers, they put that Second Amendment in there for a good reason and that was for the people to protect themselves against a tyrannical government. And in fact Thomas Jefferson said it's good for a country to have a revolution every 20 years.

I hope that's not where we're going, but, you know, if this Congress keeps going the way it is, people are really looking toward those Second Amendment remedies and saying my goodness what can we do to turn this country around? I'll tell you the first thing we need to do is take Harry Reid out."

Sharron Angle, following her come-from-behind Republican Primary win Tuesday, has bounced to an 11-point lead over Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid in Nevada’s closely-watched U.S. Senate race.

A new Rasmussen Reports telephone survey of Likely Voters in Nevada, taken Wednesday night, shows Angle earning 50% support while Reid picks up 39% of the vote. Five percent (5%) like some other candidate, and six percent (6%) are undecided.

There is no way this woman will be elected to the Senate even in Nevada. She is a complete loony tune who MIGHT be able to squeak by in a House race but no way is she going to beat Harry Reid no matter how unpopular he may be.

Thank you tea baggers for saving Harry!

Just because one person robs a bank - and gets away with it - that doesn't mean everyone else can do that - and claim they should not be prosecuted

That APPARENTLY IS OBAMA'S POSITION ON HIS CRIMES

Obama's people say - since other administrations may have commited the same crime (without giving any details) - THEN OBAMA IS FREE TO COMMIT CRIMES.

That is NOT HOW THE LAW WORKS.

OBAMA SHOULD BE PUT ON TRIAL FOR OFFERING PEOPLE JOBS IN EXCHANGED FOR DROPPING OUT OF FEDERAL ELECTIONS

AND IF HE DID IT MORE THAN ONCE, IT IS RICO

You have no credibility - not even when you have a video of a democrat assaulting someone, you have an excuse.

A CRIME IS A CRIME.

If you do not understand that, you have no judgement - your opinions are ALL FLAWED.

AND YOU SHOULD NEVER GIVE AN OPINION AGAIN - BECAUSE YOUR THINKING IS SO FLAWED YOU HAVE TO HAVE SOME MENTAL DISABILITY.

This is exactly what is wrong with America. Anyone and his brother or sister can become a Senator or Congress person. Regardless of intelligence, accomplishments, level of mental health, and etc. Every job in government requires testing, personality profiles, and etc...except the Congress. Any idiot can be elected as Angle's election demonstrates. Here is a woman with an IQ of well below 100 who is going to run for Senate...fully elected by the republican party. Hahahahaha. Only the republicans could elect someone so stupid. See Hoover, Nixon, Bush 2, et al. Hahahahahaha

the "new" poll numbers you un-American teabaggers are citing it at least a week old if not older. I saw that at least a week ago. No one needs to "portray" this complete nut job, all they need to do is report what SHE SAID. She can either deny she said it, say she didn't mean it, or changed her mind, none of which is going to convince anyone. Anyone who can actually vote for this rabid lunatic should be committed.

This tells me two important things about Angle:

1) She's not an independent candidate at all. Anytime a politician doesn't want their face in front of a camera you can guarantee someone smarter than them told them not to put it there.

2) She's smart enough to listen the advice of the political hacks running her campaign which means she might be smart enough to win.

Hey Chris, you want to know about Sharron Angle? Check out her voting record then. Don't assume that some edited little sound bytes are going to be sufficient. Anyone with a brain knows how you wannabe king-makers love to manipulate sound bytes and public perception. Oh and you people attacking Angle who don't even know anything about her, you can suk it.

And when voters finally realize that Harry Reid single-handedly blocked amendment SA 239 in Feb. 2009 to require E-Verify on the $800 billion stimulus, thereby creating 300,000 jobs for illegal aliens instead of unemployed Americans, they will dump Harry in a flash. The House voted 407 to 2 on the same amendment, but Dictator Reid likes illegal aliens more than unemployed American citizens.

She wants to eliminate social security, medicare, & the IRS and instead have a consumption tax! Can't get more mainstream than that! The elderly will vote for her in droves. They don't need these govt. benefits, and I don't think they need them either!!!

Are you nuts? Most old people live on SS and would die without it. In fact from personal experience the elderly live so close to the bone SS is not enough by a long shot, especially as any that had houses, have lost all equity they had, thanks to the free market "self" regulating mortgage industry!

Great cartoon a while back had old teabagger types holding signs "Get rid of government" "No ObamaCare" etc. and then the next box showed someone bullhorning a message "Eliminate Social Security" and the last box had all the elderly teabaggers fleeing the scene with dropped signs left behind.

Self interest seems to rule, even for right-wing-Fox-baggers!

This reminds me Ingmar Bergman's film Persona. In it the protagonist uttered one single word "ingenting" or as we say in English "nothing."

She is the perfect lunatic teabagger.

And she will be courting a bunch of GOP politicians in Washington this week, led by David "Diaper" Vitter.

Sharron has been known as a wack -a - doodle in Nevada long begore there ever was a tea party to embrace her. She was a notorious obstructionist the time she spent in the Nevada State Assembly and hung up sessions beyond any sort of time that was reasonable or prudent. State Republican mucky-mucks do not like her and think she is too ultra-right for the state. Despite the chicken remark, Lowden probably could have sent Harry Reid home. Now the GOP is stuck with Angle with her long, easily accessible record on nutty positions and statements. She cannot be scrubbed. Outside far right wing groups will not decide the election for Nevadans -- I gurantee that. Harry in a good year isn't wildly popular in Nevada, but he keeps getting re-elected because he gets stuff for Nevada and he is our native son who was brought up dirt poor, hardscrabble and tough. His rise in politics is a true American success story. Believe me, that still counts around here.

W H E R E is S H A R R O N ?

Come out come out wherever you are. She has adopted a bunker mentality. This ropeadope strategy is not working. Sue Lowden questioned the soundness of some of her positions. Those positions don't resonate with the mainstream. Republicans in Nevada are quickly abandoning ship because she is too extreme. The Dems have a 62,000 vote advantage over the Republicans and the Dems won't be voting for her. She will keep her 70,000 right wing base and fail to generate very many cross over votes from Dems and Independents. Some of the Repubs from the other candidates will vote vote for her but not the moderates. I say Reid will be up by 5 on election day

I had no idea how bad it's gotten.

Got into it on FaceBook with some libertarian type, trumpeting "the natural flow of money" and the whole "supply and demand" shtick. When I finally got sick of it and called him a flat earther he retorted that I had just proven his point .. that scientists of the 15th century (WTF?!?) believed in the flat earth and that it took a Christian capitalist like Columbus to set them straight.

I swear I am not making this up.

He ridiculed me for believing in the "shifting sands of science" and recommended some books on "economics."

Things are worse than I thought.
