Rob Simmons' covert Senate campaign?

Former Rep. Rob Simmons (R-Conn.) knows something about covert operations but is the former CIA officer running a secret campaign?

Simmons suspended his Senate race three weeks ago, a recognition that his chances of beating free-spending wrestling magnate Linda McMahon in the Aug 10. primary were not very good.

Simmons' decision to suspend -- rather than end -- his candidacy kept his name on the primary ballot and has led to speculation that he may not be out of the race forever.

In a radio interview Tuesday, the former congressman repeatedly declined to rule out jumping back in -- if the right circumstances present themselves.

"Bottom line is: I love my country; I don't like the direction in which it's going, and I will do anything in my power to change that direction," Simmons said. "And I think it's essential that we have a Republican elected to this Senate seat in November."

Could Simmons re-emerge as that Republican sometime this summer?

Here's how it could go down -- and why it probably won't.

How it could happen:

1. McMahon implodes: There is a notable sense among Simmons' supporters that there could be something so unpalatable in McMahon's history (beyond all the YouTube videos that have already been made public ) that disqualifies her as a candidate in the eyes of voters. Enter Simmons as reasonable alternative.

2. Peter Schiff doesn't make the ballot, and Simmons benefits: There is a growing sense that the also-ran investment banker might not have the signatures he needs to qualify for the primary. We should have an answer Thursday or Friday on that count. If he doesn't make the ballot, there's certainly a possibility that his supporters -- such as they are -- would lean toward Simmons. Indeed, in one poll in which Schiff is not included, a Research 2000 poll for Daily Kos, McMahon's lead on Simmons was just four points.

3. Democratic nominee Richard Blumenthal has more trouble with his Vietnam record: McMahon's candidacy caught the interest of Republicans because of the amount she can self-fund the entire contest -- not insignificant in a state covered in part by the pricey New York City media market. But if Blumenthal's exaggerations regarding his Vietnam service re-develop -- to date he appears to have nicely weathered the story -- party leaders may take a second look at the candidate they are nominating. Simmons, a decorated Vietnam veteran, has the resume to drive a very sharp contrast with Blumenthal.

Why it probably won't happen:

1. A McMahon media re-examination?: McMahon has endured a series of horrific headlines -- many of them thanks to Simmons and his team -- regarding her involvement in World Wrestling Entertainment, the company she and her husband, Vince, founded decades ago. But, of late, those stories have quieted and it's hard to imagine another boomlet in the "McMahon as flawed nominee" narrative between now and the primary -- particularly since she, at the moment, doesn't have any real opposition.

2. The Schiff factor is hard to pin down: Schiff could very well make the ballot, and even if he doesn't, there's no real good reason to believe it couldn't help McMahon rather than Simmons. Either way, it probably won't net Simmons enough votes to really change the shape of the race. Simmons will still be vastly outspent, and he would need a game-changer. And that ain't Schiff.

3. GOP acceptance of McMahon: There's no one leading a movement against McMahon in the party at the moment. And, even if the race did draw some interest from national Republicans -- the Sarah Palins of the world -- it's hard to imagine that they would line up behind the moderate Simmons.

Politics is full of surprises and Simmons is clearly lying in wait on the off chance McMahon slips badly. But, at the moment, such a slip seems unlikely though not impossible.

McMahon is now on cruise control to the R primary. She will have lots and lots of money to spend against Blumenthal, as she already is. If Shciff don't make the ballot, this helps McMahon as Simmons is a fiscal moderate and McMahon is a fiscal conservative. McMahon is in charge now in the R primary and Blumenthal is in for a big fight in the GE.

Cannula, I think everyone here is grown up enough to acknowledge that all kinds of things go into picking a candidate, and I think certainly youth and attractiveness are part of that. I think Conservatives have hit on the idea of attracting certain voters (who don't pay much attention to politics and governance) to their party by running Conservatives who are young and attractive. I think a % of voters reflexively say "that's ME and I'm voting for them," and the Conservatives are glad to have the votes.

If you put away some of your sarcasm and excitability, you can have fun on this forum. I do.

Obama to Open Offshore Areas to Oil Drilling for First Time

The New York Times

By JOHN M. BRODER
Published: March 30, 2010
"Mr. Obama said several times during his presidential campaign that he supported expanded offshore drilling. He noted in his State of the Union address in January that weaning the country from imported oil would require “tough decisions about opening new offshore areas for oil and gas development.”

Perhaps in anticipation of controversy, the new policy has been closely held within the administration. White House and Interior Department officials began briefing members of Congress and local officials in affected states late Tuesday.

It is not known how much potential fuel lies in the areas opened to exploration, although according to Interior Department estimates there could be as much as a three-year supply of recoverable oil and more than two years’ worth of natural gas, at current rates of consumption. But those estimates are based on seismic data that is, in some cases, more than 30 years old.

The first lease sale off the coast of Virginia could occur as early as next year in a triangular tract 50 miles off the coast that had already been approved for development but was held up by a court challenge and additional Interior Department review, officials said."

Let's go over this again - so you get it

Calling someone a racist now is being used as a smear -

and a way to sterotype people who you do not like.

If you are using the slur to sterotype people, then that is prejudice and racist.

It is prejudice because you are pre-judging people.

I know you don't like that reasoning - but it is valid and true.

Stop trying to call people racists - and then making a political issue out of it.

First - it is completely ridiculous because many people who you are calling this are not racists.

Mainly - because it is being used now as a smear - and a way to sterotype people who you do not like.

If you are using the slur to sterotype people - without a basis - then that is prejudice and racist.

The media really needs to chronicle - with a time-line the situation at MMS.

The media needs to chronicle exactly what Obama has been doing with the energy policy over the last year.

Put together all the details of the "year-long" energy review.

WHAT EXACTLY DID OBAMA DO TO COME TO THE CONCLUSION OF EXPANDED OFFSHORE OIL DRILLING WAS THE ANSWER.

THIS WAS OBAMA'S POLICY - announced by the O great Obama in March of 2010.

Ouch.

The details need to be out there - Obama needs to take RESPONSIBILITY FOR HIS OWN INCOMPETENCE.

The democrats need to TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR ELECTING AN INEXPERIENCED AND UNQUALIFIED PERSON.

Personal responsibility.

Re: the church torcher, Haskell:

"Assistant U.S. Attorney Paul H. Smyth on Wednesday told a judge that Haskell was a vocal racist, frequently using epithets such as “porch monkeys” to describe blacks.

“Haskell taught his dog, Sasha, to react violently when he commanded ‘get the nig'ger’ and the dog would bark and growl,” Smyth said.

In addition, Haskell and his friends crafted a punch line around Barack Obama’s campaign slogan of “CHANGE.”

According to Smyth, witnesses told investigators the defendant and his buddies switched the slogan to an acronym they said stood for: “Come help a nig'ger get elected.”

Wait! There's more:

"According to testimony in earlier hearings, Haskell was arrested for selling marijuana, ammunition and phony heroin to an undercover state trooper. Investigators then confronted him with suspicions he had been involved in the fire.

He quickly confessed, and agreed to wear a body wire on his friends after introducing them to the trooper, posing as “Jose,” a shady character recruiting arsonists-for-hire. That sting ultimately led to videotaped confessions by Jacques and Gleason, both of which have been contested by their lawyers. "

"The prosecutor also said Haskell picked a fight with a group of black youths outside the Eastern States Exposition in 2006, hurling a racial slur at the group outside the gates to the fair. He also angrily forecast a minority takeover if Obama was to be elected, according to investigators. "
