The Friday Primary Line: Game off in CA (or not)
The recent decision by San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom to drop his candidacy for governor of California left only state Attorney General Jerry Brown in the race for the Democratic nod, knocking one of the Fix's top 10 primaries off of our Line.

Friday House Line: A Republican wave?
With election day 2009 rapidly approaching, this is the last House Line limited to just 10 races. And, it couldn't come a moment too soon. The playing field for 2010 continues to expand as Republicans sense opportunity in the national atmospherics and Democrats look to stay on offense enough to build a bulwark against a possible wave.

Friday Line: Ranking Republican Leaders
Ten months into his first year as chairman of the Republican National Committee, Michael Steele is a figure of considerable debate within the GOP. In conversations with more than a dozen top Republican operatives about the most influential figures in their party, Steele was alternately cast as someone who has overperformed expectations at every turn and a leader who has done little to help the party.

Friday Governors Line: What Will VA and NJ Mean?
Eighteen days out from the Nov. 3 gubernatorial elections in New Jersey and Virginia, both parties' expectation-setting machines have gone into high gear. Republicans argue that both states went for President Barack Obama last fall and the fact that they are competitive in each is a sign of his faltering appeal among the electorate. Democrats respond that no president's party has won even one of the two state's governorships since 1985 when Gov. Tom Kean (R) won a second term during the presidency of Ronald Reagan (R). (That same year Democratic Gov. Jerry Baliles was elected in Virginia.)

Friday Senate Line: Republican Recruiting and the National Environment
Senate Republicans scored a major recruiting victory this week when Delaware Rep. Mike Castle (R) announced he would run in 2010 for the seat vacated by Vice President Joe Biden. Castle was rightly regarded by strategists of both parties as the only Republican candidate who could make Democratic-leaning Delaware competitive. With Castle in the race, it will surely give state Attorney General Beau Biden (D) at least some pause about what had been seen as a sure-thing candidacy.

The Line: The Four Elements of Great Primaries
There are a few necessary elements that take a good primary contest and turn it into a great one. First, the two (or more) candidates each have to have a realistic win scenario. Quixotic candidacies are rarely the stuff great primaries are made of. Second, the candidates must be on (somewhat) equal financial footing. If one candidate outspends the other by millions -- or tens of millions -- the fight isn't fair and the primary isn't great.
