Obama Announces "Organizing for America"

President-elect Barack Obama announced the formation of a new group known as "Organizing for America" that aims to continue the grassroots advocacy that the former Illinois Senator began in his presidential campaign.

"As President, I will need the help of all Americans to meet the challenges that lie ahead," Obama said in a video message e-mailed to supporters (and reporters) this morning. "That's why I'm asking people like you who fought for change during the campaign to continue fighting for change in your communities."

The new group will be the flagship of "Obama 2.0" as many people have taken to calling the transformation of the political organization created during the 2008 campaign.

The new group will work within the Democratic National Committee -- led by Virginia Gov. Tim Kaine -- to advance the Obama agenda. "President-elect Obama has laid the foundation to meet the great challenges facing our nation, but we can succeed only if we build grassroots support for the administration's agenda," said Kaine in a release announcing the formation of Organizing for America.

The new group had been long expected within Obama's inner circle and, although no details on how it would be staffed were released by the transition office today, it is expected that longtime Obama loyalists will be placed in charge -- following the blueprint set out at the DNC.

It's clear that Obama recognizes the power that his email list, which boasts more than 13 million names, represents in American politics and is working to ensure it stays within the control of a small group who are charged with protecting the Obama brand.

Really? The economy was doing great those first six years? Really!? ROTFLMAO. I seem to recall a recession back in 2001 kicked off in no small part by Bush talking about recessions as soon as he took office. What a dope.

BTW for the first six years under Bush the ECONOMY WAS DOING GREAT. Stocks reached all time highs every days unemployment make record lows. pending-issues was right was in 2007 that the economy began to go under. Hmm, just when the dems took over.

What bankrupted this country was the collapse of the housing market. See during the clinton years it was believed that EVERYONE deserved a home whether or not they could afford it. Banks were pressured by the Gov. to make bad loans (sub prime) you can look that up since i doubt you would know what it means.

TEN YEARS LATER SURPRISE!!! THOSE BAD LOANS WERE NEVER PAID BACK. thE BANKS ETC WENT BANKRUPT THUS THE COLLAPSE OF THE FINANCIAL SECTOR. THUS THE EVENTUAL COLLAPSE OF THE ECHONOMY.

Yep that's what happens when the GOV gets involved in the private sector.

Every year they would get destroyed in one student government election after another, yet despite this repudiation of their vile views, they would continue spewing right wing garbage in the belief that they were right, and everyone else was a moron.

So sad, really, that after finally getting your man Bush and all his cronies in the White House for eight years, and even managing to control the Senate and House for most of that time as well, that you should find yourself here today; the country in ruin, our power a laughing stock, our great corporations brought to their knees. I wonder how Drindl felt about monitoring possible terrorists? I'll bet she felt it was infringing on their rights. Too bad she doesn't feel the same way about her fellow Americans. In fact, she's willing to turn them in to the FBI, Secret Service, etc. with no actual threat. She perceives misgivings and apprehensions about the consequences of the Obama election as actual threats. No dissent allowed. Not anymore. I thought Hillary said it was patriotic to dissent. To speak out if one disagrees. Guess it depends on who you're disagreeing with. The double standard has become pretty normal for D.C. and Republicans just roll over and take it. What Drindl is attempting to do is simply stop free speech, unless that speech shares their point of view. Threats to Obama? I think not. But, sad to say, I sure she/he(?) perceives it that way. These people will continue to do what Drindl has done...threaten, attack, call names, insult your intelligence, and believe with all her/his heart that you have absolutely no right whatsoever to express your opinion, unless, of course, it is in total agreement with hers. This is it, folks. Those who follow Him and question nothing He says or does will rule the country. The thought police and speech police are coming to your neighborhood. This group will be comprised of likeminded thugs who will see it as their duty to enforce Obama's will, to "encourage" us to see things His way. Remember His comment to "get in your neighbors face" and to "get angry" to try and convince them that the Obama way is the only way. Aspergirl doesn't realize she's willing to give up her freedoms. By 2012, Chicago dirty politics will be the rule instead of the exception inside the Beltway and we will accept the corruption and pay-to-play as business as usual. Holder "learned" from his mistakes and Geithert made an "honest mistake", and we will become used to getting very flawed individuals to lead this country. Think England, and how the Monarchy and their subjects live under two very different set of rules. Also think 1930's Germany. We've got the makings of a monarchy and the beginning of a "brownshirt" movement. What some people don't realize is that after years of socialism, England, France, Italy, and Sweden are putting conservative governments back in. Socialism does not work. But we will be told that Obama's brand of it will work. The media will not question anything he says and there will probably be a news blackout on anything negative about the new administration. the economy will start to improve in about a month (reported by many a man on the street), there will be a new sense of well-being. We're looking more and more like the Soviet Union everyday. Obama's goal here (and the other Democrat socialists) is too indoctrinate and mobilize as many people as possible so that conservatives, conservatism, and capitalism has absolutely no chance of ever being part of the American dream again. Unfortunately, it was conservatism and capitalism that made America great. While he lavishes TRILLIONS, on his well heeled buddies, at the Banks, and the Auto Industry(UNIONS), and the Mortgage Companies, he wants the shlubbs-you and me-to run around VOLUNTEERING. I'm curious if this Great Leader ever volunteered, HIMSELF? I know that he WORKED for ACORN. But I don't recall ever hearing that he VOLUNTEERED for anything. Or his wife. I know that she had a 6 figure gig, WORKING at some Hospital, but, again, I don't recall her VOLUNTEERING for anything. It makes perfect sense, though. The LEFT loves this kinda thing. Go to websters dot com and look up the words "entitlement" and "unregulated". You put 100% of the blame on wall street and the subprime crisis and ignore the fact that Barney Frank, Dodd, the Clinton cronies who ran Fannie and Freddie, pushed for these many billions of dollars of loans to be made to people "who never qualified for loans before."

As for the rest of it, spend some time doing research instead of listening to the Pelosi propaganda machine. You might learn something.

Well, I wasn't an Obama supporter until John McCain imploded in late September over economic policy during the Wall Street meltdown. However, it became obvious to me then what lack of leadership we have in this country over what happens in financial elite circles, and how unregulated, entitlement-minded and corrupt that class of Americans are. These financial and corporate elites have corrupted and exploited the country's markets in areas ranging from capital investment to health care. We cannot regain control over our society's well-being and restore a functioning market economy until and unless we take back control over how things are done at the policy, regulatory and legislative level.

It makes perfect sense to me that Obama would want to maintain and grow an independent movement momentum and activist organizing capacity beyond that which is already established the system in Washington DC and other power centers of the U.S. How can he change anything if his Administration is faced by cadres of insiders holding keys to process and gatekeepers who push back?

It would be essential for Obama to maintain his independent movement infrastructure if he is to really bring about any change. I added myself to his mailing list last year.

Take a good look, my fellow Americans! Let me say this: the relative wealth of our society is not based on how much money the government prints. It's as simple as that! Wealth can be created and destroyed...PEOPLE create wealth through invention and HARD WORK (mostly the latter). The government destroys wealth for control of the people, after all, only the wealthy can pose a threat to those in control.

People keep acting like Reagan was wrong to deregulate and shrink government. We just capped off nearly 30 years of unprecedented growth after Reagan took office. EVERYONE in our great land became more wealthy during that period. Remember...most of the lower half of the population did not have microwaves or even color televisions. They did not own multiple cars, unemployment was in the double-digits as was inflation!

The problem now is we are headed into the same situation, but instead of tightening our belt, BHO and the Dems are running to the mall with a credit card while sending checks to their friends on Wall Street.

We already will have to pay for the housing crash...and consumer credit crash...but 8 TRILLION dollars and counting of government spending will have to be paid by us and our children...and grandchildren. The effect of this administration will be felt for nearly a century if we don't stop it.

We appreciate the fact that you are interested in a grassroots approach to your organization.

I regret to inform you that I vote in elections and have my voice heard through my legislative representative, on the state and federal levels. When s/he fails to speak, I work to vote them out.

You see Mr. Obama, I am the poor dumb schmuck who works two jobs and pays taxes, unlike some nominee to the Department of the Treasury who neglected to report of $100k of income to the IRS. Now I'll admit, I've missed $35 in savings interest earned and have had the IRS (politely) ask for the the proper money due, with interest and penalites, even though the bank sent the form to the wrong address. The amount of $35 is much more likely to cause an oversight, than $100,000.

I have no doubt that if I had such an oversight on my part of $100k, I'd be appearing before a US District Court Judge on charges of tax evasion, but I digress.

People who don't work, generally speaking, have too much time on their hands. In reading some of the material in the WAPO, they are envious of those who have worked to succeed and as one who has worked to succeed, you want to take the fruits of my labor and give them to someone who has not generated the same effort.

It is total nonsense when people can't take charge of their lives and we support failure. We need to support achievers and people with good ideas. We need to present opportunities for those to achieve. Let's look at the residents that moved from NOLA and found new and better jobs outside of their squalor. people need to adapt and evolve to new situations and challenges or we cease becoming a nation of achievers and become a nation of receivers.

Giving out "free money" is not the answer. It never has been and it never will. The best example of cutting taxes and giving opportunities is with your nominee, Tim Geithner. He didn't pay income tax on the $100k he received and look where he is today.

Create opportunities, not bail-outs!!!

I wish to add in conjunction to my previous comment.In the beginning-they are not sure which was dominate and it probably alternated, there was only an uneasy bond between the political and religion (divine king, priest king, etc)for early civilization. All other systems were absorbed into these two and "hidden". So one read chicken guts to decide what to do, medicine and science was under religious control and one said chants and such or "scientific" findings were deemed true by religion and enforced by the political. Ruling families ruled by divine will or right so there was intimate intrigue between priests and king to maintain position. It took thousands of years to finally reach the modern subsystem structured state (functionally differentiated) and set science, medicine, economic, family and even religion and politics, and etc, free from that former duel structure. With the re-politicization of these other systems, somewhat caused by the ideological hyped masses and all communication becoming political now (this is not just a liberal problem, by the way) we are actually returning to a new form of the primitive.

A wise professor taught me years ago to ask a simple question when considering matters of national policy:
"Would you support this idea or policy if your political opponent was in power and was the one executing the idea or policy?"

This question provides for libertarian critical thinking rather than blindly following any elected official.

I have asked myself this question during the administrations of every President since Carter and, as a result, have found many policies of every President to be infringements upon my freedoms and those of my fellow citizens. Such policies MUST be resisted with all of our individual and collective energies, as an answer of "no" to the question clearly indicates that the policy is a bad one for our nation and our freedoms.

I would encourage each of us to ask ourselves my professor's question as the new administration begins to move the country in different directions in the coming weeks and months. If you can ONLY support the new ideas and policies if Obama (or another Democrat) is President, and not a Republican, then I would suggest that the policy is probably very bad for the country.

The only way to retain and expand our liberty is to exercise it every day.

Stop the world...I want to get off. Regardless, Obama or Bush, democrats or republicans, America and the American people have been taken for a ride and the cement is poured for a pair of boots to sink us - forever. America has been remade into a place devised by the elites, for the elites, of the elites. I envy the English settlers, the pilgrims, the French Hugeunots, the Spanish explorers, those who had an option to head West or to the New World. I envy those who had to face a wilderness with no guarantee of anything...at least they had the freedom to make their own lives free of nanny state control freaks or the corpogovernment blood suckers who have bled us dry. The same blood suckers have no loyalty to this nation, hide behind ideology or an short sighted arrogant agenda AND they use taxpayer money to fund OUR demise as a nation. I wish some Canadian province, say Alberta and Saskatechewan would split from the rest of Canada and offer any American 20 acres and the chance to build their own lives, in their own way, with their own religion, with minimal government interference, minimal taxation, and the right to be at peace to build lives for themselves and their families. We don't need to 'organize America' we need for DC and Wall Street to get out of our face, stop playing with our freedom, sovereignty, while they attempt to build their personal feudal empires, or remake human nature along lines convenient to THEM. I will light a candle to that effect ... but it will take a real blaze of prayer and action to limit the oligarchs and tyrants, arrogant and narcisstic, in their pursuit of total power over all of us.

I saw an add on Hulu were some group wants to restore "global balance". What is that-how is the globe balanced? Nothing is balanced or stays the same; everything grows old and dies moves from one state to another. This country is no different and has to age and come to an end-entropy. If you take a few minutes and try to remove your petty little minds from all the ideology that you have been fed with (half wits should think their way out of it-Nietzsche), stop watching a hollywood diet of juvenile diversion and get away from music for a little bit and actually do an exercise called thinking- Pascal (it is for the masses you know)and look around; this place is in trouble and its the kind of trouble politics adds to. The social system is made up of subsystems and politics is only one of many and if these other systems become politicized they will not function from their own reference (the media which now attempts to create political reality rather than function as media, or science pushing a political social agenda, political right or left religion, for example). This will induce a sort of politicized totalitarianism that will have all of us and will be the death of this place; at least it will be brain dead.

I could buy this concept that a "grassroots" organization is something newer and better if it meant that ideas were passed from the ward and precinct level on up the line.

Everything about Barack Obama's campaign had two ingredients that made it successful. First, it was large and secondly everyone was invited and included in the campaign if they wanted. Now that we have seen the full extent how large the challenges are in our economy, healthcare, national security, etc., why would it not be obvious that someone who can mobilize and include so many people in the process is the leader at this time when we need him most!

obama seems to be prepared to do the same thing. he's already said he will NOT give up his blackberry. neither did bush or cheney, or any of the bush admin.. and the reson they had them was was to avoid the 'federal records act', the legality of being required to preserve their trail of e-mail messaging.

obama ran and won the election based on promised "change".

oh man. i feel REALLY bad right now. you see.. i had forgotten for a moment when i said that, "obama during his term might hold a workshop for *AMERICANS* interested in organizing their SOCK DRAWERS???", and in doing so, i momentarily forgot that this country was based on the premise of opportunity for all. i respect obama, and i think i can speak for him when i say that obama would NOT only allow americans to participate in his sock organizing workshop, but would want it available to ALL people in this country.. americans.. germans.. latinos.. croatians.. eskimos.. russians.. babtists.. asians.. popes (they have their own country, you know).. peruvians.. indians.. nebraskans.. latinos.. oops, i already said latinos.. ummm... jamaicans.. canadians.. texans.. italians.. romans.. and even the greek..

and do you know what else? i'll bet that the obama dude would even let you come to his sock organizing class if you are an illegal immigrant.. yup. you heard me right. you see.. i know that obama feels that an organized sock drawer is the key to bringing this country back to the status of feared and respected super power. i mean.. think about it. if you were iran or palestine, would you want a country like america with citizens that keep blue dress socks mixed in with white athletic socks on the same side of a drawer attacking you?!?!?

i know.. i sure wouldn't. so, we need to not only impress ourselves with our sock drawer organization, but we also need to impress our sworn enemies. i feel that i can probably say with absolute certainty, that as long as you illegal immigrants don't arrive to mister barack obama dude's sock organizing workship driving a commercial vehicle with a gross vehicle weight of over 26,001 pounds, you will be okay. and if i'm wrong?? it's INS for you, baby.. no harm, no foul.

What is being lost sight of in numerous discussions is the character of the era we are moving into - The transformative power of the technological revolution is huge and "behind" the crisis Obama and the rest of us face. The revolutionary impact of technology on production has made human labor cheap and redundant.(read billions) The role of the compliant wage slave is being replaced with real slaves and or robots throughout the world. Ask the jobless Chinese if you don't believe me. That's why we need to create jobs regardless of their profitability and solely for their value to society. All you who are terrified of socialism would do well to chill out as you already blissfully ignored the subsidized socialism to corporate America in the form of tax cuts bailouts etc. which have so far helped only the rich. If Obama can forge a unifying program he may be able to head of the social unrest that is inevitable if we listen to the "free" market ideologues. Just pray its not to late.

Americans too often believe that their work in a democracy is done when they vote and pay their taxes. Many of them, I regret to say, seem to live in a bubble as impenetrable as the one that Bush lives in. It's that bubble that allows an administration like the last one to trample our rights, waste our resources, ruin our economy, and diminish our country's moral stature. Keeping a large cadre of the American electorate engaged through something like Obama 2.0 sounds like a good way to maintain citizen engagement. It's not perfect, but nothing is.

Obama will speak directly to his supporters via the net.

There is nothing inherently scary about all this (and I say this as someone who did not vote for him, partly because I found the whole cult of personality aspect to his campaign creepy).

Much will depend on what he wants and what he asks his supporters to do to help him achieve those goals.

What Obama clearly gets is that to sideline the special interests controlling Washington, he needs something else to fill their place. Lawmakers depend upon outside voices to define their priorities and votes. For too long, lobbyists have performed this service - through both Republican and Democratic administrations. It is not possible to silence the lobbyists unless another voice steps up to fill that vacuum - and this new organization may just be the vehicle for the silent majority to find their voice and cast off the narrow but profound influence of the special interests. You go, Obama!

I'm uncomfortable with this. I'm an Obama supporter and worked to get him elected. What concerns me is that this could be the other side of the coin we've dealt with the last 8 years. "True Believers" of any stripe are a danger to our country. An informed electorate with critical thinking skills are necessary for democracy to function.

I could be seeing danger where none exists, but I'll be watching and considering if I'm being asked to do something with a real, positive effect on my community and the world.

People are so gullible and this is just another ploy to keep those votes lined up for 2012. He's already stated that campaign promises were just "campaign rhetoric". He's put forth so many plans, so many programs without specifics that no one can keep track or monitor them. We will see a lot of back pedaling on many of them in the days to come. Talk is cheap. I'll judge his success in office solely on actions that produce positive, quantifiable results for America.

You know one thing about the e-mail list of supporters that bothers me is that if we are going to address the nations needs electronically then we should make damn sure that EVERYONE has access. I know what your going to say because I too use my PC for nearly everything everyday. But the elderly and the income disadvantaged may not be able to and they too deserve a voice. BO is supposed to be the president for all Americans not just those who are computer savvy.

I m cautiously optimistic about the potential of this new effort by Obama. If he is wise enough to allow Organizing for America to grow from the bottom-up rather than top-down, it has the potential to change the way our democracy itself functions. Instead of assuming our leaders are going to solve all our problems, and giving a yea or nay every two or four years on the results, people can work between elections to become part of the solution. Thousands of people with the skills and energy to take on the problems we face can lift our communities up and meet the enormous obstacles we have before us. With a broad grassroots effort we have the potential to overcome each of these obstacles, without it--continuing to rely on distant bureaucracies to solve every problem--we may succumb to them.

If you're going to ask the citizens of this country to make some hard choices, and make decisions that will be unpopular with at least some of them, what better way than to engage an army of supporters? This goes right over the heads of our elected representatives. Smart politics, if you ask me. Frankly, I like this a whole lot better than Cheney's approach to democracy which was: when making tough decisions, what Americans think is irrelevant.
