Obama's erosion among white voters continues

President Obama continues to struggle among white voters. AP Photo

The latest Washington Post/ABC News poll shows President Obama's standing among white voters continuing to slip, a potentially ominous sign for his party with the midterm elections fast approaching.

Just 40 percent of whites in the Post/ABC survey approve of the job Obama is doing, his lowest rating among this key demographic since the start of his presidency and well below the 50 percent approval number that he carries nationwide. Forty-three percent of white voters strongly disapprove of the job Obama is doing, while just 19 percent strongly approve.

Among the other lowlights with whites in this poll for Obama: 54 percent of college-educated whites now disapprove of the job he is doing, and, among white college-educated women, Obama's approval numbers has dipped below 50 percent for the first time in his presidency in Post/ABC polling.

Much of Obama's struggles with white voters seems directly attributable to the public's deep pessimism about the economy. (Ninety-four percent of whites polled rated the economy either not so good or poor.) Just over one in three whites (37 percent) approve of Obama's handling of the economy -- his worst rating among that demographic group ever. Forty-eight percent of white voters strongly disapprove of Obama's stewardship of the economy, while 13 percent strongly approve.

It's interesting that Obama's flagging numbers on the economy have been driven not by white Republicans or white Independents but rather by white Democrats.

Since April, white Democratic approval of Obama's handling of the economy is down 20 points, from 80 percent to 60 percent. And, nearly as many white Democrats now strongly disapprove of how he's dealing with the issue as those who strongly approve (25 strongly disapprove; 28 strongly approve).

(Huge thank you to Post polling director Jon Cohen for crunching the numbers!)

Why does this crush of data matter -- particularly for the 2010 election?

As we wrote in an earlier column, recent historical trends suggest that white voters will comprise a larger chunk of the coming midterm electorate than they did in 2008 -- making the erosion of Obama's numbers a major concern for House strategists.

White voters made up 79 percent of the 2006 midterm electorate and comprised 74 percent of the 2008 vote. If the 2010 electoral composition mirrors that of 2006, one Democratic official who closely monitors House race predicted "massive losses" for House and Senate Democrats in November.

The Atlantic's Ron Brownstein has written extensively -- and smartly -- about Obama's struggles with white voters both during and after the 2008 election. (Worth noting: Obama outperformed the party's last two presidential nominees among all white voters in 2008.)

Way back in January Brownstein wrote these prophetic lines:

"The depth -- and breadth -- of the decline in [Obama's] support among whites ought to be giving Democrats heartburn. That's especially so because a falloff in minority participation during the midterm election makes it likely whites will likely cast a slightly larger share of the vote in November than the 74 percent they did in 2008. In each of the three major elections since 2008 -- the GOP's wins in the 2009 New Jersey and Virginia gubernatorial races and Republican Scott Brown's stunning upset victory Tuesday in the Massachusetts Senate contest -- the GOP candidate ran notably better among whites in their state than John McCain did against Obama in 2008."

The Post/ABC poll provides some grim backup -- if you are a Democrat -- for Brownstein's point. In the overall generic ballot question -- "If the election for U.S. House were being held today would you vote for the Democratic candidate or the Republican candidate" -- the Republican candidate took 47 percent to the Democrat's 46 percent.

But, among white registered voters, Republicans held a 20-point -- 56 percent to 36 percent -- generic ballot edge and among white likely voters the margin for Republicans was 23 points.

What these numbers mean is that congressional Democrats need one of two things to happen to avoid major losses this fall: 1) Obama's numbers must rebound among white voters in some significant way or 2) The Democratic National Committee's plan to re-create elements of the 2008 electoral coalition must work, changing the face of the traditional midterm electoral in a meaningful manner.

Neither scenario, at the moment, is all that likely -- which may well have something to do with the increasingly public airing of discontent aimed at the White House from House leaders.

WOW! And this is the Washington Post/ABC News Poll! I wonder what an unbiased poll would say the true percentage is? My guess is about 33%.

The only way the Democrats can win is by continuing to import more and more immigrants from countries that will historically vote for Democrats when they become U.S. citizens.

JFK was the one who originally tried to change our immigration laws and Ted Kennedy eventually pushed the 1965 Immigration Act through the Senate. Ironically, this law all but banned Irish Immigration to the U.S. Yet JFK and Teddy are heroes to the Irish Community. Why? Brain-washing by the MSM about Camelot.

Anyway, we need to repeal the 1965 Immigration Act and go back to National Origins policies. If we don't the Democrats will eventually become a permanent Majority. Currently they are not as bad as Bush but they sure are starting to come close to being as bad as W was.

Anyone who would vote for Obama or the Democrats now is either an idiot or a socialist, which is really the same thing.
I wrote-in Ron Paul last November because I could stomach neither mainstream candidate. One - Obama - was a socialist, and socialism not only doesn't work, it's one of the stupidest ideas ever put forth by man, and the other, McCain was "socialist lite" (a little less and a little slower, but the same destination!
People everywhere need to start understanding economics, which is merely the study of 'human action' - what dissuades and what motivates it. This is not rocket science. It ought to be understandable to all, after all, we're all human, we should have some understanding of human nature. Socialism's appeal is based on humans most base and avaricious sentiments: ENVY & THEFT. Look, if you're going to share all that you produce, where's my incentive to produce anything at all? I'll just kick back while you work and we'll both enjoy the fruits of you labor- hell, that sounds pretty good to me!
You'd think people would understand this by now! But no! People continue to elect dreamers and charlatans...why are people just so persistently stupid?
I don't know who's running in 2012, but Obama will not be getting my vote. While Sarah Palin is light years wiser than Obama (Obama is an incompetent fool) but 'm not sure she's truly committed to the vision for the USA our Founder's had: Free markets and trade but no entanglements in the politics and wars of other nations - INCLUDING ISRAEL!!!
Perhaps someday most people (idiots will always be with us, as evidenced by many of these posts!) will gain understanding but I'm not hopeful.

I don't believe this. If support is leaving after this amount of time, then there wasn't a real investment in real change for America. I would still vote for him today and give him my support to make a difference in the US and the world.

Its sad to see that Obama thinks he is doing a good job and the economy is on its way to recovery.
Its even more sad to see that 40% still believe him. It's almost a race issue. However, the good news is that America has finally woken up to the truth about this man and this administration.
Hope and change, you wanted it you got it. Here comes the calvary to the rescue. Remember to vote.

No real actions on anything other than to keep saying that if I didn't do what we did things would be worse, pretty lame. These polls are misleading. Lots of Dems/Libs/Progressives are dissatisfied with Obama, but that doesn't mean they'd choose a GOPster when voting. The problem is that they may not vote.
The biggest problem, is that The Media incessantly mirrors GOP talking points, and rarely challenges all the GOP lies. If all The People see in the Media, are people spewing GOP talking points, the ignorant folks will start believing. And these polls reflect this. Just watch any Sunday morning news-talk show, and you'll see all the questions skewed through a GOP prism. It's a wonder Obama got elected.
So, if The People don't start educating themselves, in all likelihood, they'll put back into power the same people that got us into this mess. Something they'll deserve.

IT'S A POLL. Jeez, it's just a poll. These same respondents whose "support" is slightly fading so soon are the same people, by definition, who have already forgotten why they voted for Obama in the first place: Bush and the Republcians were a disaster. "WaPo polling is well regarded." That's debatable, but their spin on their own polls is not well regarded by me. I'm interested in hearing about public opinion, which drifts this way and that, but the Post is hammering on this thin data every day. Starting to look like an agenda, isn't it?

Note, from the story above: "Just 40 percent of whites... approve of the job Obama is doing, his lowest rating among this key demographic since the start of his presidency and well below the 50 percent approval number that he carries nationwide." Come on. Whites are "key," of course, because they are a large group. Their "keyhood" is diminished by their lack of attention span and faint commitment, by and large. Further, compare the nationwide 50% approval. We always knew whites were his weakest support. Wonder why? Oh, I forgot -- it's politically incorrect to imply... Let's just say that a nonzero percentage of white disapproval is owing to discomfort about... uh, cultural... er, values.

Take polls with a grain of salt. I'd say my support for Obama has "slipped" at least 10% since he took office, but I'm not such a fool as to expect better results from whatever Republican runs against him. And it would be a serious mistake to weaken the Democratic influence in either house of Congress this year. It's a mistake Americans may make, of course.

Obama & Crew have not merely ignored "white voters", they have trashed their values and history. From the very beginning with his abrupt return of a bust of Winston Churchill to the Brits, he has made it clear that he reviles all "white" history and Western Civilization. He has inflamed "race" in this Country as a Great Division more than the KKK. He can never "walk" that back. He is a demagogue in the tradition of African leaders who were elected and then became despots.

He has no concern for Democrats or Republicans. He intends to rule this Country according to his limited Marxist upbringing. He can not conceive that it matters at all that most Americans are growing in their antipathy toward him. We Americans are incidental to his "pre-ordained" place in history. He is a "true believer" in his destiny. He is mentally unbalanced. And, this Country will pay a terrible price for that.

The left politicizes ever thing, every aspect of life is turned into a new political crusade, a new crisis to confront. Americans don't want to live like that. They have kids to raise, and lives to lead. And even a bad day of fishing, camping, canoing, snorkeling, or just lounging around. Is better than a good day arguing about toys in happy meals or sugar in soda. Americans just aren't down for the progressive revolution, and I have the feeling they'll make that known in November.

What we actually have is the Tea Party trying not to appear racist - and definitely not having a racist message out there.

What we do have - clear and simple - is the NAACP launching into a hate-filled sterotyping of the Tea Party - all to score political points.

This is a national disgrace.

And Obama hasn't approved all of this ???

Obama has not come out against it.

Seriously folks, this is the most ridiculous thing - ever.

In addition, we have complete hypocrisy on the part of Obama on his post-racial pledges.

Obama should resign immediately. This is shameful and a disgrace to the nation.

You are right - only a conservative can govern this nation correctly.

Having said that, take a look back at the anti-war rallies - and the signs depicting Bush.

All I am saying is the same level of criticism which was launched upon Bush - that same level is legitimate to criticize Obama.

But that has not been the standard - the standard has been, if you protest Obama, you are a racist - and we are sending cameras to the rallies to video all the signs and if one nut has a questionable sign, you are in trouble.

It is ridulous.

If you want a post-racial environment do it - stop all the false charges of racism

Say that you will ignore all the racism - and do that - ignore it.

But everytime Obama is down in the polls, we hear all sorts of false charges of racism - that is not a serious attempt to improve race relations, it has become a political ploy.

And these false charges are only going to hurt black candidates in the future - the false charges are setting back race relations.

The charge has been made: the democrats care more about political ploys than they care about race relations.

The behavior of the democrats proves this.

The democrats are unfit to govern.

The President needs to warm up his veto pen then. Otherwise, fresh tax cuts are on the way! More national debt follows! More war spending! More loopholes to help Wall Street, not Main Street, pile up even more cash! That's what the Republicans' agenda for America is. The President is vulnerable because the Republicans have successfully held together, knowing that he needs 60 votes in the Senate to pass anything, they've fillibustered more than previous minority parties have, and the general public doesn't realize that 60 votes are needed - they hear that the Democrats have the majority in Congress and can't figure out why they can't pass anything, calling them inept. Then, when something is passed, they have to give away the store to do so (see health care), which subjects them to more criticism. It's a lose, lose situation, except for the Republicans come November, as they'll succeed in satisfying the cravings that most politicians do: (1) re-election; (2) power; (3) the majority.

brigade the reference to Bush is only to show the contrast b/w 18% and 45% and regardless of how boistrous the right is today, Bush was universally despised by the right and left.

Obama has tackled some tough and enormously complex issues that have been with us for generations, including Fin Reg and HC. You obviously disagree with the results but in 15 months he has actually accomplished quite a lot in a mere 15 months. You are politically savvy and appreciate that 50% seems to be a magic pre election number, but being at 45-46% in most polls with a 3-4% margin of error is pretty close and not all that bad. Reagan I believe in his first term when the economy was really struggling economically was actually lower in the polls, so I wouldn't put much stock in the 45% number. My guess is that however the election turns out his numbers will jump back to the low 50s by next Jan.after all the dust and campaigning is over in Nov and folks get back to being fixated on nfl games. We are pretty much a 50/50 nation which is pretty much where Obama is right now.

Do you deny that fact that Bush's floor-level approval reflected a miserably executed presidency? Isn't that low approval relevant in light of the fact that he mismanaged his responsibilities shamefully, that he bequeathed to his success a heap of serious problems any one of which would cast a serious pale over his presidency?

Are you serious in the apparent belief that it's only about "winning?"

See if you can couch your answer in terms that relate to the question, about the BUsh presidency, and leave out the "community organizer" and "teleprompter" and all that stuff just for once.

leichtman1, No, I am not missing the point. I realize that Republicans think they are the only ones that can run anything or know anything. It is okay if they screw the country. It doesn't matter that they don't have a clue and didn't have a clue for eight years. The problem is , there are a whole lot of gullible people out there falling for the rhetoric and instead of looking into things for themselves they allow themselves to be manipulated by the very people who want to destroy the President. They have forgotten all about the reasons they were so upset for the past eight years. They have allowed themselves to be indoctrinated into voting against their own best interest. They refuse to see what Republicans have done to this country over the last 20 years. Republicans spent 8 years and $80 million dollars trying to destroy Bill Clinton. George Bush comes in and just abut ruins the country, started two wars and spent like drunken sailors. Tax cuts for the rich, perks for big corporations and then set out from day one to destroy this President. In between time they have done absolutely nothing for the average American. I mean they have even apoligized to BP for BP's negligence and refuse to hold Wall Street accountable for their contribution for oue economic downfall. Republicans had eight years and the haters don't even want to give this President two?

I fail to see the relevance of this, even though you keep bringing it up. Bush wasn't running for re-election, although Bush-fatigue no doubt hurt McCain. When a president's popularity is low-to-mid 40s going into an election, it's traditionally not a good thing. He could bounce back, just like Reagan did, but those approval numbers will have to rise. What did McGovern and Mondale carry, one state each? You could do ten times better and still lose. If Bush's approval rating had been 18% in 2000 or 2004, now that would have been relevant.

The stats show that the appeal to the white middle class is waning as promises of hope and change are belied by the actual performance.

In order to avoid disaster in November, the Administration needs to gin up the base by appealing to racial solidarity and inciting fears as to what Republicans could do.

The third leg of this coalition, the intelligentsia (Obama's own people) need no incentivization and will remain blindly loyal to this government of the academics, by the academics and for the academics.

I wrote the Embedded SQL for COBOL product at Microsoft back in 1991. I was pretty junior then and really should not have been given an entire product to write, but I did and it damn near killed me.

Now I work mostly in C++, C when I can, and most of my work the past six years has been around cryptography, content protection, and computer security. I've done some C# but I can't stand try/catch/throw.

My career is opposite yours, I prefer contracting and change companies every few years. I've enjoyed FTE work but it takes too long and I have to soothe too many anxieties about tangentials, which gets old.

I love solving problems but the industry is getting stale, more and more process and procedure and I don't like being interviewed by young guys who have a head full of team team team and don't know anything about programming.

My contract here has been extended as much as their rules allow, I'm done in a month, and my next job will almsot certainly be my last, then outa here.

Thanks for replying.

Oh for goodness sakes, Republicans/conservatives/right wing/tea party/Obama haters have worked to divide the country from the time President Obama was elected. How in the heck do you people expect for him and him alone to unite the country when from day one those on the right made no secret that they wanted him to fail? Republicans decided from day one, no matter what they would work together to destroy this President. And then they/you have the nerve to blame the President! Get real. It is Republicans/conservatives/right wing/tea party/Obama haters who want to destroy this President so bad that they could care less that they are destroying the country in the process. The race baiters are people like you, the tea party and the other right wing birthers and Obama haters who want to exercise their freedom of speech but whine, bi!ch and moan when people point out their racist rhetoric. You people think it is absolutely fine to vilify and demonize and disrespect our President but whine like sissies when others come out in support and point out how racist and intolerant you are. Well, my most recent exposure to B.A.L. was a good 20 years ago---I was converting assembler programs to COBOL at the time. I don't do machine code. I guess leichtman1 was right about sarcasm passing unnoticed. But when the Y2K scare was on, I was deluged with offers from shops where assembler was still used because not many people know it. I work for a successful company that is not an I.T. company, but has it's own I.T. department and no plans to outsource---at least not before I retire. I have been there for nearly 25 years and have no intention of leaving. I currently do as much analysis as programming, but when I code, I still use COBOL for mainframe processing. We switched from IBM to UNYSIS many years ago, and I create data for use by MAPPER I.T. people who develop the internet applications. COBOL is an old language that will be retired some day---just like me. But it's what I'm paid to write, and I'm paid quite well. Satisfied? Now about those berries . . .

Top Clinton Official: Only A Terror Attack Can Save Obama

A former senior advisor to Bill Clinton says that the only thing which can rescue Barack Obama’s increasingly tenuous grip on power as his approval figures continue to plunge is a terror attack on the scale of Oklahoma City or 9/11, another startling reminder that such events only ever serve to benefit those in authority.

Buried in a Financial Times article about Obama’s “growing credibility crisis” and fears on behalf of Democrats that they could lose not only the White House but also the Senate to Republicans, Robert Shapiro makes it clear that Obama is relying on an October surprise in the form of a terror attack to rescue his presidency.

“The bottom line here is that Americans don’t believe in Obama’s leadership,” said Shapiro, adding, “He has to find some way between now and November of demonstrating that he is a leader who can command confidence and, short of a 9/11 event or an Oklahoma City bombing, I can’t think of how he could do that.”

Shapiro’s veiled warning should not be dismissed lightly. He was undersecretary of commerce for economic affairs dung Clinton’s tenure in the Oval Office and also acted as principal economic adviser to Clinton in his 1991-1992 campaign. Shapiro is now Director of the Globalization Initiative of NDN and also Chair of the Climate Task Force. He is a prominent globalist who has attended numerous Bilderberg Group meetings over the past decade.

Shapiro is clearly communicating the necessity for a terror attack to be launched in order to give Obama the opportunity to unite the country around his agenda in the name of fighting terrorists, just as Bush did in the aftermath of 9/11 when his approval ratings shot up from around 50% to well above 80%.

Similarly, Bill Clinton was able to extinguish an anti-incumbent rebellion which was brewing in the mid 1990’s by exploiting the OKC bombing to demonize his political enemies as right-wng extremists. As Jack Cashill points out, Clinton “descended on Oklahoma City with an approval rating in the low 40s and left town with a rating well above 50 and the Republican revolution buried in the rubble.”

Anti-incumbent fever is dominating the political climate once again, with establishment Democrats facing serious challenges from Tea Party candidates, people like Senate Democratic majority leader Harry Reid, who has a battle on his hands against Sharron Angle, a candidate the establishment media has attempted to demonize as a far-right extremist because she supports populist measures like removing sodium fluoride from water supplies and supports the Oath Keepers group, an organization centered around upholding states’ rights and the U.S. Constitution.

The bottom line is that Obama's poll numbers have remained b/w 45 and 50% consistantly for the 16 months that he has been in office.
Last time I checked we are all Americans regardless of skin color being polled, so why should we care one bit what the composition of those being polled are? Is CC suggesting that Anglo's opinions and voting preference are superior to Hispanics, AA's, Asians etc.? As I recall George W stayed in the low 20s pretty consistantly his last 4 years in office and last time I checked he was polling at 18% a year and half after he left office. So if Obama is at 45-50% he is 2 1/2 times more poular than Bush, having to deal with the horrible economy he was handed. The right is acting like the economy was roaring in Feb 2009 when he took office, when in reality we were hemorrhaging jobs at a clip of -750,000/month. Is the media and the Fix so stupid and joined in the collective amnesia to not understand that was the economic reality a mere 15 months ago? 15 monts ago, not 2 years, not 4 years and certainly not 8 years ago; a very brief time in the scheme of our nation.
Apparently we all expect instant gratification and to suddenly go from losing 750,000 jobs to gaining 750,000 jobs/month overnight. It is about time that the legitimate media wake up and appreciate where we came from economically and how much better the economy is from where Obama started. Its likely that had McCain won we would have lost an additional 8 million jobs by now, continued the disastrous Bush economic policies the Rs would be crowing how great he is and what a great war hero he is and to get off his back.

I nthink these polls are nonsense. All they cover is the American publics knee-jerk reaction to which ever way the wind is blowing.

The economy is a mess, no one denies that. The mess IS NOT Obama's fault. You can blame the Democrats or Republicans, or the bloody Martians for the mess, but blame no longer matters. It's getting out of the mess that matters, and THAT TAKES TIME!

The economy isn't some sports car that turns on a dime and goes from 0-100 in 3 seconds. It's a lumbering, ungainly, overloaded, supertanker that takes miles and miles to change direction let alone get moving.

If you think that McCain, or Clinton, or whomever would have better approval numbers than Obama right now had they been elected, you're delusional.

The American voter is a spoiled, fickle, child that throws a tantrum the minute they don't get what they want. Grow up America! Patience is a virtue.

1) We the white American people love capitalism. Simply call something socialist, even if its not, and we will hate it. And when the economy is broken the president should be able to fix it right away.

2) We the white American people are very upset about the deficit. Of course, we didn't much care when times were good and something could have been done about it. But our self-righteous anger demands immediate action. Unless it means we will have to give up our tax cuts. Then we're not really so angry, after all.

3) We the white American people want the President to do more on jobs. But we are still really upset about the deficit so we want him to do it without spending any money. Perhaps he could create more jobs by waving a magic wand, finding a magic lamp or through prayer.

4) We the white American people are to be pandered to at all times. We are very angry that someone is making tough choices and not having the decency to coddle us.

5) We the white American people want it all and we don't want to have to spend a dime for it.

6) We the white American people don't understand why our economy is in shambles when we are so obviously sensible.

So people are finally getting it that the feel good candidate had no experience to be the President of the United States in 2008. Too bad all of the voters that fell for the media hype didn't take the time to really listen to the Clintons on the primary campaign trail, not to mention the delegates that were afraid of the backlash if they didn't pledge their vote for Obama. If the voters really want change in 2010 they'll vote republican so Obama will be forced to be a true bi partisan like Clinton had to do in 1994. Our country only works when the two parties split the power, then things can really get done in D.C.

"Comprise" is not the modern form of "compose" it is a different word. The "chunk" comprises the voters, the voters compose the chunk.

It may seem trivial, or pedantic, but when you misuse a word, people can be forgiven for wondering how many other words you don't know the meaning of. And as E. B. White might warn you, the wrong word causes people stop and perhaps lose the point of your message. If you have a good thought to share, you don't need to throw in the "current word", your thought will be sufficient.

Again, media literacy would inform me that the Washington Post is spreading propoganda using questionable statistics.

Here's what I see:

A downcast looking President Obama photo from the AP and a link to a poll with questions attached. The questions were from a sample of 1,288 randomly selected individuals affected by the Gulf Coast spill. Those States are (TX, LA, MS, AL, FL). In the 2008 election, Obama carried only FL. Therefore, TX, LA, MS, and AL all went to McCain. Therefore, out of the 5 States polled...4 of them were REPUBLICAN territory.

So, what ARE you saying WaPo? You are saying that people that already HATED Obama still have not changed their minds? Big deal. Barack Obama and the Democratic party shouldn't waste any time catering to the group that he'll never win over any way.

So, why have you used this duplicity in your story? Are you saying that DEMS ought to say uncle to the Republican party's demands that are more in line with CORPORATE INTERESTS? I think so.

'Nuff said. Attention People of America: Disregard this media message as it is not to be trusted.

Which group of firefighters were unfairly denied promotions because of their race? Refresh my memory. Why were the test scores thrown out? Silly me, I had forgotten it was because the blacks had worked twice as hard and scored twice as good as others in the group. Blasted Klan must have been in charge of that fire department.

Obama is not simply a radical leftist or a radical socialist. He is a Marxist revolutionary. This puss oozing, malignant illegal alien is spiteful, hateful, destructive and a putrid venom running through the body of this nation.

According to the Treasury department, the U.S. government under President George Bush took in a single-day record $61 billion in tax receipts on June 15 2005. This surpassed the previous single-day high of $56 billion set on December 15, 2000. The recent surge in tax revenues is not just a one-day event. Fiscal year to date, total government receipts are up 15.5 percent, the fastest rate of increase on a comparable FYTD basis since 1981

The one-day debt increase under the Obama administration for June 30 2010 totaled $165,931,038,264.30 - bigger than the entire annual deficit for fiscal year 2007. The figure works out to nearly $1,500 for every U.S. household, or more than 10 times the median daily household income.

Guess that about says it all.

You're not keeping up. Tax revenues INCREASED as a result of the Reagan and Bush43 tax cuts. So if revenues INCREASED, then there was NO LOST REVENUE. That's a contradiction. The problem is that the increased revenue was SPENT and a lot MORE was CHARGED to future taxpayers, so revenues were dwarfed by spending. That's the problem. We need deficit spending now to stimulate the economy, but when the economy is booming, no one ever wants to CUT spending, so deficits continue to rise in good times and bad.

Q - Why are Republicans so interested in illegal immigration?

A - That's an easy one. If they focus on illegal immigration they can keep the focus off the lack of jobs they (Republicans) are creating.

Republicans, in order to create will good paying American jobs will have to:

1. End corporate mergers and acquisitions.

2. Breakup large companies.

3. End outsourcing.

4. Force, by excessive fines, a return of jobs to America that have been outsourced.

Republicans or Democrats will do none of the above since it would alienate their campaign donors. Better to have American's unemployed than to risk the loss of campaign donations.

So lets break this down. The golden boy is not doing well. He carried the white vote in 2008 and every other race, ethnicity, creed or whatever you want to call it. The fact is he won the election with the help of many many white votes. Now that he is proving not to be up to the tasks at hand, ABC takes a poll and calls it "the poll amongst white voters." This is just another ploy at making white people feel bad once they read the headlines. The fact of the matter is, the President and his administration don't have a clue as to what they are doing. The poll should read, "Obama's support amongst people who pay attention to the state of the economy is down." Why does it always have to come to a race issue with the liberals, i mean, progressives? That's another issue though, why are you called "progressives"? Where are we progressing?

Half-truths. Not many people calling for tax increases during this recession; that's why Obama's policies are producing massive deficits as far as the mind's eye can see. Let the Dems run on tax increases now, if they think it's such good policy. And the Reagan and Bush tax cuts actually DID stimulate the economy and result in INCREASED government tax revenue.

==

NON-truths, and complete garbage.

Give tax breaks to corporations and they increase executive bonuses and move jobs offshore.

Yeah there is some small economic stimulus, but not much, nowhere near what conservatives insist on believing, and never enough to make up lost revenue .. and that lost revenue completely swamps the small economic stimulus, which conservatives simply refuse to believe, sticking fingers in ears and yelling "I can't hear you!"

And yes, Obama is running up deficits, borrowing money to stimulate the economy, which money infusion does, and which tax cuts DON'T. And with the deficit hawks demanding we follow the same path that deepened the depression in '37, it's no surprise that the recovery is faltering.

Conservatives are incapable of learning from mistakes, and in most cases unwilling to even recognize them AS mistakes. You guys still believe your BS about private sector good government bad, tax cuts good taxes bad, and you can have ice cream for dinner and never get fat.

the problem with your post brigade that:
"Jesse Jackson, who recently compared Lebron James, who is the very epitome of the American dream, to a slave because the owner of his ex-team was upset at his taking a new job"

is that you are totally mischarachterizing what Jackson said. He DIDN'T compare James to a slave, he said that the Cleveland Cavalier OWNER'S whining that James had no right to leave Cleveland, and DAN GILBERT NOT JAMES was ignoring the fact that James was a legitimate free agent, and not a slave.

Get it: Gilbert was being an idiot and acting like James was a slave, not a free agent. You obviously don't like Jessie Jackson or his choice of words, but his comment was actually factually correct.

Personally I could not stand how James'
dramatized his self centered contract, but
Gilbert's reaction was clearly over the top; Jackson's comment was meant to send a message about a hard fought right to NBA Free Agency, nothing more. With all those out of work in Cleveland its really insensitive of James to rub his
$500 million contact in Cleveland fan's face. Your making a big deal about the sensitive word 'slavery' is an unnecessary overreaction on your part.

NAACP Resolution

One would imagine that if Obama did not agree with this resolution - he would have had his people call the NAACP to stop the resolution.

Or - if Obama did not agree with the resolution - we would have a statement from Obama or the administration disagreeing with the resolution.

So, the nation has no choice but to recognize that Obama agrees with the resolution -

So Obama agrees with calling the Tea Party - 80 million people - racist.

This appears to the be the policy of the President of the United States.

If you voted for Obama - you set in motion the events which led to the administrations trying to STEROTYPE 80 MILLION AMERICANS AS RACISTS.

To concernedaboutDC - you are right about die-hard Repubs being blindly loyal, and about blacks being as loyal to the Dems. But more moderate Republicans are clearly "swayable" - as evidenced by the decline in GWB's favorable ratings 2005-08 (Democrats already and always hated him) and in the election of Obama himself BHO could not have won in 2008 without many disaffected Republicans - or at least R-leaning independents - coming on board. And those are the voters he's lost now.

Sadly, with good intent BHO (or more correctly, Congress) got SO tunnel-focused on generations-old wet dreams, mostly HCR, that they completely forgot about jobs - or at least gave the appearance of doing so. This Admin is, or was, the master of the sound bite, speech and media manipulation - but truly lost a great number of the faithful by losing sight of the tragedy of continued high unemployment.

For another two cents worth, with the horrible unemployment numbers for black males, I cannot understand how that bloc continues to support BHO at the level they do..........

Too divisive, too arrogant and condescending, a poor leader (in fact, a no-leader), no experience, a poor manager, out of touch with the majority of America, an economic lightweight, his shades of gray elitist "attorney-speak" (lies) with one audience and "shuck and jive" is quirky and to top it off, I think he needs serious professional help controlling his ADHD. I admit it - I was scammed. I don't trust the guy.

The problem, as any elementary school student knows, is when you increase SPENDING so as to eat up the increased revenue and much, much more. That was Bush's great sin; but strangely enough, when he was running up that debt, liberals weren't calling for cuts in spending---they wanted to SPEND EVEN MORE! Now they whine about the Bush deficits. Rank hypocrisy.

The key is for Republicans to run candidates who are not brain dead religious fanatics. One big reason college educated Americans turned away from the Republicans was the infiltration of it's ranks by religious kooks like Mr Bush. . I find it very hard to vote for persons who believe that the Flintstones is a documentary rather than a cartoon.

2. In general opinions about the state of the economy have gotten better in the last 8 months, although still negative.

The demographic data on who disapproves isn't so much important as the fact that there doesn't appear to be anything coming down the pike that will make things genuinely better. The country needs a fundamental change brought forth from intellect, training, and experience-something not generally available from an election whether rightfully won, unfairly controlled or substantially purchased...

Well actually it is no surprise for some. It is well known that African Americans, especially males have to work twice as hard and accomplish double what their white male counterpart has to do and still will be lacking in some eyes.

President Obama has accomplished a great deal in the less than two years he has been in office despite obstruction from Republicans but people either don't like what he has done and/or decide to discount or ignore it. He has tried to do much more for the country but is opposed in everything he attempts. The American people are inpatient as well. The Bush administration and Republicans had eight years to screw the country but yet people began whining, bi!ching and moaning immediately that the President wasn't doing enough or fast enough.

I understand people are frustrated and angry but my goodness perhaps if you angry people would at least try and support the President and demand that your representatives work WITH the President rather than trying to destroy him perhaps our country would be much better off.

How about stop listening to the party whose only solutions to your problems is to demonize President Obama and try and destroy him, not because they have any solutions but just so they can regain power. How about you people begin to educate yourself and actually find out exactly what President Obama has done for you and stop listening to the very people who are trying to destroy him.

Most people who oppose Obama oppose his policies. They are in contrast to what Americans want.

It's really not that complicated.

There are more than 4 million public school educators in this country. Most are deeply dismayed about the direction that Obama's education plans are taking. This was demonstrated by the "no confidence" vote in the Department of Education and Race to the Top adopted by the delegates to the recent convention of the National Education Association.
If the Democratic majority in the Congress wants to win this time, they must put a stop to Race to the Top. They should know that it is very hard to win an election if all the teachers in the country are angry at you.

Anyone who has travelled in North Africa has seen this prejudice up close and I'm not surprised that al-Qaeda harnesses it."

There is much truth in what you say. That's what makes it so pathetic to see black men like Malik Zulu Shabazz of the New Black Panthers, one of Loonie Louie Farrakhan's former bootlickers, praising Osama Bin Laden and other terrorists. They don't seem to realize that their only value to Bin Laden would be as suicide bombers, slaves in harness, or vermin to be shot. They are so full of self-loathing that they identify with a culture which looks upon them as less than human, and they have adopted its anti-Semitic doctrines. They strut about in the safety of a free and open society, pretending to serve some useful purpose, when all they really accomplish is to take buckdancing to a whole new level by lionizing Islamic terrorists who wouldn't spit on them and being a source of embarrassment for African-Americans in general. Truly sad and pathetic.

No one scrutinized his voting record( or lack of one),his academic records or test scores, the effects of his formative years spent in Indonesia,or his proclivites toward Saul Alinsky's socialistic philosophy. The media touted Obama's rhetorical skills, never revealing his dependence on multiple teleprompters to read a short speech. Obama never attempts to deliver an impromptu message. Remember when he misprounced "corps" three times in a speech to a audience filled with military personnel?

Because the media failed the people, the nation will suffer immensely and perhaps meet its demise.

Obama needs to tackle the real gutsy issues:

1. He needs to create well paying jobs by:

-Ending mergers and acquisitions.
-Breakup large companies into many smaller ones.
-End outsourcing.
-Place excessive fines on companies that have outsourced until those jobs are returned to American soil.

However, I do not believe Obama has the leadership skills to do the necessary. And I don't see any Republicans that have the skills either.

We need to scale back greatly our focus on high corporate profits and focus on the day to day paychecks of Americans. Its the day to day paycheck that runs the economy.

Obama championed change. Nobody now sees any change. If any body sees change, it is for worse. Many Whites voted Obama because they really wanted to give a chance to an outsider. But the economy sinking, jobs disappearing and the country on the verge of a decade long recession or depression as in Japan and with our people addicted to government solutions for their welfare, things don't look good for either party. Whatever our leaders say about our future tough times are ahead for all of us. I hope and pray our social order does not erode with dire consequences for all of us. We know those things have already happened in other countries.

If African Americans would, for example, stop clamoring for special treatment and simply work harder, they could achieve the American Dream. What senseless blather. There are laws against discrimination; if you are a victim, sue or prosecute. Slavery and segregation HAVE come to an end in the USA---not so much in some North African countries where people of darker skin are routinely sold into slavery by Muslims.

If you can't achieve your dreams now, you're going to have to accept the responsibility. The door is open; walk through. You've spent too much time listening to poverty pimps like Jesse Jackson, who recently compared Lebron James, who is the very epitome of the American dream, to a slave because the owner of his ex-team was upset at his taking a new job. This is one thing I respect about Republicans. They stand strong behind their party NO MATTER WHAT. Any right thinking person knows that George W. Bush's administration was marred with incompetence from Brownie in Katrina to the fake WMD that put us in this ridiculous war in Iraq. Yet, not one Republican, say for Colin Powell, will admit it, and, in fact, most will DEFEND it.

Not so with the fair weather Democrats. It isn't a matter of Barrack loosing white voters, it is that he is loosing Democrat voters period. It is not like black voters, whether it be a black president or not, would in large numbers flee the party for the Republicans even during rough times. They are the most loyal electorate in the country; ironically as loyal as Republicans tend to be for their party.

Democrats, more than any other group should understand and appreciate the monstrous economic mess that was inherited from the GOP on election day. It was 8 years in the making and was clearly was not going to be 2 years in fixing from the start.

The common thread of discontent is JOBS. People want to see more jobs. However, are the abdicating Democrats suggesting that had there been a republican in office, McCain, that there would be more jobs? The economy would have rebounded faster? Everyone would have lived happily ever after?

If the answer to any of those is 'yes' then, I must say, the Democrats deserve to loose. They have no resilience. They cannot stick to the mission and kick through the obstacles along the way in the such that Republicans seem to have the tenacity to do. Even when their mission is god-awful for the country.

I don't vest my happiness in politicians. I don't presume that any candidate running for office will hold true to all of the promises that they make while running. I don't even believe that if they wanted to they could. Special interests control the White House and Congress. In short, the U.S. government.

Barrack Obama has tried to do right by the people. He has held true to most of his campaign promises. Evident by the strong Republican discontent. More so than most. However, what is most disappointing is that his party, that voted for those promises, are abandoning ship BECAUSE of them.

Democrats have always been their own worst enemy. This trend continues.

TO demtse...I sure would not like to depend on your reasoning power!
Discontent with Obama is not restricted to 50 year old white folks. Of course, these are the folks who have lived a while, have had life experiences & know which end is up. It is possible that most of these 50+ people are discontented with the President, as well they should be, but they have loads of company, even in the black community.
This discontent is not based on gender, color, or anything but Obama's inability to be a leader. He gave more importance & his attention to the Professor vs the Policeman & going to Oslo to talk the Olympic Committee into taking the Olympics to Detroit than he did to the job crisis or the immigrant situation or, especially, the oil spill. The same goes for the health care plan. In fact, the health & human services department sent him a letter one week before the vote by Congress, warning Obama that this bill would be a danger to seniors & Medicare & would not save money but would cost $200 billion more than the present system. He was such a good President that he hid this news from Congress before their vote. He claims that he did not read the letter before the vote. If true, that too, would have been a dereliction of his duty, knowing that the report was to advise him on the health care bill. As for the oil spill, there is a video going around the Internet showing how Obama spent his time for the 1st month of the tragedy. He was caught on camera playing golf, going campaigning, traveling around the country to buy take-out lunches or suppers that were bagged by popular restaurants & which he took home, at what cost to the taxpayers? If he made a decision & the media and/or the people didn't like it, he simply reversed it or made another speech saying he was on top of the situation. It took him months to make a decision on Afghanistan, even asking reporters what their opinions were.[ as seen on the Charlie Rose Show ]
His picks for important administration jobs went to his cronies from Chicago, instead of to people who would have been more suitable.
This job is over Obama's head & it shows, badly. The only thing that Obama did well was running his campaign.

Or did the disaffection of white voters really start with the president's ill-advised remarks on the arrest of Professor Henry Louis Gates, Jr.

Check the charts. See when the slide began.

The economy didn't help, of course, but neither did things like the president's Census form answers: by denying he is even half-white, he threw his white grandmother under the bus after all.

Obama ought to call Dick Cheney and George W. Bush into the White House for advice instead of Bill Clinton. Cheney would tell the President to spend more on the Afghan war, ramp up the fighting. Bush W. would nod yes. And W. would tell him to forget about finance reform. Let the banks, wall street, the insurance companies, loan companies, car company execs, British Petroleum and the other oil companies do whatever they please. And Cheney would chime in that we ought to expand the security budget, spend more on government employees at the top end of the government, at the expense of higher education tuition loans, state university budgets, grants to states, medicare, social security, eliminate food stamps, Aid to Dependent Children programs, and end federal subsidies for child care. Yeah, I hope white Americans re-elect someone like Cheney or Bush, because then we'll have another revolution, things will be so bad, and the country will appear so weak that we'll be attacked and have a possible war.

We went through a period where even John McCain said "We spent like drunken sailors" and Orin Hatch said it was "...standard procedure in the early 2000's not to pay for anything" so we borrowed and spent.
The last month of Bush's presidency saw more than 700,000 workers laid off and we were in a recession. Then we, the voters, were dumb enough to put another party (the Democrats) in complete control of our government. This even after the GOP had just proven that one party in total control can not be trusted. Now we are complaining about things are even worse than before and are blaming everyone but ourselves. I hope that some day we will realize that we are the real power in this country and when we start holding all politicians responsible and accountable we will get a better government. So I've been following this stuff for quite a while, and here's my take: 1. White folks find it tough to blame a Black Man for thier problems. Even if he is the President of the United States! While at the same time, 2. White folks see that the financial aid programs that President Obama stands behind are mostly designed for people who are not like them, and definetly not like they want to become, ever. Truth hurts, I know. So maybe it's time to address this truth ?

Whites are tired of liberals piling more and more taxes on their backs in order to give it away to those that won't work for a living. Ever heard of the saying, "Killing the goose that lays the golden eggs"? That is what Obama has done and wants to continue to do to the white population. Obama is an ignorant slacker that thinks he has a right to impose his own personal will on to the American people. Well, now he is finding out they have had enough. Instead of catering to blacks and Hispanics by lying to them and making them think he is there sugar daddy, he should be more worried about what the working class wants and needs.

I hope the wheels keep coming off Obama's presidency because it only helps the country dodge the pain he intends to inflict on us. It is becoming more obvious everyday that Obama loathes the USA and wants to tear it apart and destroy it permanently. November and 2012 can't get here soon enough so we can cut the cancer out of the body of this country that is rotting us from the inside out.

McCain would have followed the GOP playbook, cutting taxes on the wealthy and on corporations, and further relaxing rules on moving jobs offshore, as well as increasing spending on what we somehow refer to with a straight face as defense. He might even have invaded Iran, ignoring the depleted readiness of our military from Bush's two wars of choice.
When the economy failed to follow the Laugher Curve, McCain would get mad. He'd lash out, do something really stupid, and probably have a coronary.
Then it'd be that horrid Palin woman and nothing would be good in then world anymore. Dead planet.

I am not surprised that the majority of comments here come from uneducated and/or plain stupid folks. (not to mention racist and hateful)

They blame the President for everything that happened the last 10 years, the breakdown of the housing market and the economy, the necessary bailout of banks and insurance companies, the bailout of the car industry, the gulf disaster, the slow recovery of the economy.

If there would not be the NEED for the economy to recover everything would just be peachy fine, right?

They listen to the lies, and believe those lies from FOX and their racist group of morons instead of getting facts.

They forget that EVERYTHING the President needs to do to clean up the mess behind is met by obstruction and over 100 filibusters by the MINORITY party.

Over 150 important positions in the government have not be filled yet due to the foot dragging of the despicable GOP.

But be warned, my friends. The majority of voter will not be as stupid as you are.

Posted by: mackiejw | July 14, 2010 5:39 PM | Report abuse

I guess white college educated voters have completely totally forgotten about the "white" college educated men who got the country into this mess.

No pun intended, if you want to make this a discussion about white college educated voter poll numbers and a black president and the stalled Economy.

No pun intended what so ever.

But, what I would like to know is this. What is the age group of these 54% College Educated whites?

Knowing their age group will shed a little bit more light on their dissatisfaction with the President in this Economy.

I would suspect that if most who were polled are recent college graduates, then yes they would be dissatisfied with the president because they have been unable to obtain full-time employment with benefits in these last 2 - 3 years, while trying to pay down their student loans.

If these are older college educated white Americans that were polled, then they should know what happens during a major recession. Lay offs, that's what. Those making the most money and those who are over 50 years of age have the most to lose, if they have jobs in the private sector, during a major recession. In some cases, many people making over 3 figures also have the most to lose and also those who were the last hired during a recession.

As of right now, it will take a miracle for President Obama and the Democrats to turn things around and the only way for that to happen is for the Republicans to start working with the administration to create jobs and stop being the obstructionist that they are by using this tactic as a political stronghold to further damage the economy and peoples lives. It will also require the Private Sector to get up off their sorry b-hinds and start hiring people.

There is not one single president in the history of America that can force the Private sector to hire people. As we have all seen, even the federally taxpayer funded bailouts and Corporate tax-cuts has NOT prompted them to do so.

With that, white college educated Americans should let the Tea Party control and run your government, if you think they will do a better job doing so.

Do libs actually think that establishing a bunch of bureaucracies, raising taxes to further their agenda, actually helps anyone?
I had to work with these bureaucrats for many years in my career, and, with few exceptions, they are more concerned about the size of their desk and paycheck than getting any job done.
Liberal politicians ought to live by example, rather than living according to whatever action allows them to retain power.
People (especially libs) are talking about reducing or eliminating SS - why have we not heard the senators and congressman volunteer to give up their pension? - is that not an entitlement? you bet it is - and they didn't even contribute to it. What a life - you get to confiscate anything from the taxpayers to suit your own purpose. Wow - wish I had a deal like that. All I want is a lousy few bucks back that I contributed over forty years - and these idiots want to cut it - but it's OK to give it to illegal immigrants who have contributed nothing.
How about that NAACP proclamation that the tea party is racist? - I would imagine that they're redefining racist to be anyone who is self reliant. If you want to keep what you've earned, rather than give it to a lazy lib, you're a racist. Insanity now prevails - is there any hope?

He might even have invaded Iran, ignoring the depleted readiness of our military from Bush's two wars of choice.

When the economy failed to follow the Laugher Curve, McCain would get mad. He'd lash out, do something really stupid, and probably have a coronary.

Then it'd be that horrid Palin woman and nothing would be good in then world anymore. Dead planet.

most white Americans are centrist. Obama sold himself as in the center. He turned out to be far left of the center. Most whites who voted for him feel betrayed. One party rule is never good, especially when there is an extremist in the White House.

When will the Post finally stop using the race card as an excuse for Obama's deserved decline? It is not the color of his skin which people are against, it is the color of his political philosophy, which is a deep Leftist red. Even Liberals are realizing that he wants to go farther left than they want to go. You continue to ignore the African-American Conservatives who are against this man.

another long winded argument to imply that whites are inherently racist or would vote against a politician solely based on the color of his skin.

Now while racism does still exist, and in large quantity in certain states (pick any of the Old South) and neighborhoods (how about South Boston or South Philly?) the reason why President Obama is losing trust and credibility with whites has less to do with skin color than with competence and how he has seems to have confused the priorities of the left wing of his party are out of whack with that of the nation as a whole.

Stop blaming us for his failures; first, it was President Bush;s fault, now it is ours.

The problems of Barack Obama and his party are primarily of his and their making. Time they accept responsiblity for them rather than blaming it always on the mess they inherited or the relatively small percentage of bigots who still walk amongst us. There are some that have the skills and some who don't and you can't teach it, but you can exploit, fake, and market it. Obama's team did and he was elected without the experience, saavy or political know how to navigate in these difficult times. Now, folks want to return him to the store, but they can't. Instead, they will take it out on him via the midterm elections. My take is that he will continue to implode, play more and more golf, and distance himself from those who elected him. The dems better start looking for a 2012 candidate that can take him out or they will probably lose the entire presidency. My take is it should be Hillary. She is ready and she is and has been the majorities pick, if you count Florida and Michigan. :-)Would we want to take a second look at her now that we know we need a moderate democrat in office to get stuff done? Anyone who remembers the initial coverage of Prop 8 and the way the press tried to skew it along racial lines will understand why these questions are important; the press, by and large, tried to say gay marriage was struck down because of black voters, when in fact young voters regardless of race voted for gay marriage while old voters regardless of race voted against.

Boy, has this country become dumb. First, it listens to Limbaugh and Fox News. Then, the Washington Post hires Krauthammer to tell us every day how bad Obama is. Then, it hires Dan Balz, who takes a poll which says that the public is angry, bitter and whiney, blames everyone, and blames obama THE LEAST and headlines the article "Poll says Obama is in trouble." Then Chris Cizilla, the dumbest of all, has to write an article, so takes Dan's headline and writes a nothing article that says "Golly, gee, Obama is in trouble." The article needed to point out some things. Whites typically lean Republican. White independents/conservative Democrats are most likely to turn on Democrats when the economy is bad. They did the same to Bill Clinton in 1994. The GOP still held a majority of white voters in 2006 and 2008. Whites tend to view the federal government and any policy as negative because whites make a higher incomes and tend to believe that government programs benefit minorities which is considered unfair to them. This has been the case since 1966. The Dems and Obama are going to have to make policies to where whites benefit and minorities don't it seems. Maybe they will have repeal healthcare, continue the Bush tax cuts, promote racial profiling, put more blacks in prison, get rid of affirmation action, or just reject the black community for being freeloaders.

Being buddies with Rev. Wright wasn't enough to set off the alarm. But when Obama OBSTRUCTED JUSTICE, by ordering his puppet Eric Holder to halt the investigation of ACORN, followed by also halting the prosecution-investigation of the Philly "Black Panthers" for voter obstruction,

when coupled with the fact that Obama has been acting like a TRAITOR serving FOREIGN NATIONALS HERE ILLEGALLY, allowing Mexican nationals to completely take over three Arizona counties the size of the State of Delaware, while abetting the enemy by filing a frivolous lawsuit against those Obama was supposed to defend, even many blacks are protesting about Obama.

See, for example, what Col. Allen West, a black congressional candidate has to say about Obama:

rewrite the history of the 1929 Depression

>>>>>>>>>>>

you mean the downturn that was extended and exacerbated for years after liberal policies were enacted?

flashback to a history that liberals refuse to learn from:

Let's think about President Obama's failed economic stimulus program. Before getting to the nitty-gritty of why stimulus packages fail, let's look at the failed stimulus program of Obama's hero, Franklin Delano Roosevelt. FDR's Treasury Secretary, Henry Morgenthau, wrote in his diary: "We have tried spending money. We are spending more than we have ever spent before and it does not work. ... We have never made good on our promises. ... I say after eight years of this Administration we have just as much unemployment as when we started ... and an enormous debt to boot!"

Morgenthau was being a bit gracious. The unemployment figures for FDR's first eight years were: 18 percent in 1935; 14 percent in 1936; by 1938, unemployment was back to 20 percent. The stock market fell nearly 50 percent between August 1937 and March 1938. Columnist Walter Lippmann wrote, "With almost no important exception every measure he (Roosevelt) has been interested in for the past five months has been to reduce or discourage the production of wealth." The last year of the Herbert Hoover administration, the top marginal income tax rate was raised from 24 to 63 percent. During the Roosevelt administration, the top rate was raised at first to 79 percent and then later to 90 percent. Hillsdale College economic historian Professor Burton Folsom notes that in 1941, Roosevelt even proposed a whopping 99.5 percent marginal rate on all incomes over $100,000. Much more of the Hoover/FDR fiasco can be found in "Great Myths of the Great Depression".

I'm a white Democrat who voted for Obama, and I'm glad I did because it forced me to finally confront the sad reality that the US political system is completely corrupt and cares not one bit about average Americans. The US has become a fascist oligarchy in which the governmnet serves business and business serves the government, and the people don't matter.

One more thing: the Dems seem to be following the old playbook that we (white ex-Dems in this case) will not vote for a Republican. No problem, I've converted completely to Libertarianism.

Even though Obama is moving to ban off shore drilling for the US, forever, he signed an executive order to loan 2 Billion of our taxpayers dollars to a Brazilian Oil Exploration Company (which is the 8th largest company in the entire world) to drill for oil off the coast of Brazil. The oil that comes from this operation is for the sole purpose and use of China and not the US.
Here's the real clincher...the Chinese government is under contract to purchase all the oil that this oil field will produce, which is hundreds of millions of barrels of oil. America has absolutely no gain from this transaction.

Guess who is the largest individual stockholder of this Brazilian Oil Company and who would benefit most from this? It's the American BILLIONAIRE, GEORGE SOROS, who is one of Obama's most generous financial supporters.

Only 97 more to go until Barry the inept bungler has gotten more of our guys killed than were lost during eight full years of Bush. At the current rate that event will occur about six to eight weeks from now.

Why shouldn't healthcare fund abortion? It's a legitimate medical procedure and the fact that a bunch of religious busybodies have elected to seek to control others' access to it for the last few generations has no medical relevance.

Leaving aside the all-but-settled cases where a woman is pregnant from rape or her life is threatened by pregnancy, no pregnant woman who elects to terminate her pregnancy should be impeded by law nor by deprivation, and arguments based on "my money" being used to fund it should be ignored as should all such arguments. An abortion costs next to nothing compared to the revenue cost of raising a child .. the schooling, for example, to say nothing of the moral depravity of compelling someone to bear a child she doesn't want. Abort away.

Obama is chronically detached from the central and immediate concerns of "The People", he is dragging America into the alternate universe of his socialist ideology. Last week the Federal Government filed suit against AZ for an immigration law that doesn't differ from Federal Law. And at the same time, a dozen States sued the Federal Government over the costly and unwanted Obamacare.

For America, this means 13 trillion dollars in debt and rising to 17-19 trillion before he is through. Debt service of up to $ 1 trillion a year. A permanent reduction in the lifestyle of all of our descendants. The end of American exceptionalism and the gross reduction of American power. Massive unemployment. An ever smaller number of productive people supporting an ever growing number of government workers . Massive inflation. Abandoning the dollar as the world's reserve currency. And the laughter of China, Russia and every two bit dictator in the middle east, Asia and South America.

No one voted for Obama believing his hope was Socialism - and, as an example, Dems simply wanted reforms to health-care and coverage for the 30 million who did not have coverage - No one in the electorate wanted socialized medicine but the fringe.

The same is true with energy. Everyone wants clean energy and not to be dependent on foreign oil. No one however, wants $5.00 tax added to each gallon at the pump as they do in Europe - but that is what Obama is pushing.

The socialistic programs and policies of this Administration and Congress result in Obama's current approval rating of 46% and a Congressional approval rating of 21%. 79% of the electorate believes Congress is doing a bad job.

“Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery.” - Winston Churchill

Budgets do not come from the White House. They come from Congress, and the party that controlled Congress since January 2007 is the Democratic Party. They controlled the budget process for FY 2008 and FY 2009, as well as FY 2010 and FY 2011. In that first year, they had to contend with George Bush, which caused them to compromise on spending, when Bush somewhat belatedly got tough on spending increases.
For FY 2009 though, Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid bypassed George Bush entirely, passing continuing resolutions to keep government running until Barack Obama could take office. At that time, they passed a massive omnibus spending bill to complete the FY 2009 budgets.

And where was Barack Obama during this time? He was a member of that very Congress that passed all of these massive spending bills, and he signed the omnibus bill as President to complete FY 2009.

If the Democrats inherited any deficit, it was the FY 2007 deficit, the last of the Republican budgets. That deficit was the lowest in five years, and the fourth straight decline in deficit spending. After that, Democrats in Congress took control of spending, and that includes Barack Obama, who voted for the budgets. If Obama inherited anything, he inherited it from himself.

In a nutshell, what Obama is saying is I inherited a deficit that I voted for and then I voted to expand that deficit four-fold since January 20th.

Wonder how much the conservative orgs would thive if they stopped stroking the insecurity and conceit of their barely-literal viewers (that's viewers. not readers) and started telling them things they needed to hear. Anyway.

So the Tea Party's raison d'être is fiscal responsibility and limited government? The charge of racism is contrived? I call troll on both counts. As even many Republicans have noted the TP's political agenda is the same as zouk's Fix agenda, the continuous expression of rage and derision. Politically they are completely incoherent and often contradictory, a gaggle of variously marginal people who're mostly ther remnants of Jim Crow Democrats who became Republicans ten minutes after LBJ signed the Civil Rights Act.

Not that they're really all that potent a force .. their rallies get smaller every month and appear to have been swollen with recruited vagrants. And a political group composed mostly of elderly smokers isn't going to expand, it's going to suffer a lot of marble attrition.

But it's a belly laugh to claim the racist charges are unfounded. There isn't a lot to with fiscal responsibility in carrying pictures of the President with a bone in his nose.

With President Obama seemingly prepared to let at least some of the Bush tax cuts expire – and to entertain the notion of a national value-added tax – is it Romer’s scholarly credentials or Obama’s understanding of economics that is deficient?

P.S. I'm guessing that declaring it "The Summer of Recovery" doesn't make it so.

The stimulus was the largest spending bill in U.S. history. The administration claims that the package was a success because every dollar the federal government pumps into the economy generates more than a dollar of economic activity. When Obama came into office, the country was already hit with a huge deficit, recession and a war raging in the middle east. He promised change, but he did not deliver.

There is only one party in the US, the business party, with two factions, democrats and republicans. The financial institutions funded obama's presidency. So once you find out what these financial institutions stood for, then you will know where his policies lie. The business sector runs the country, not the voters. And when the recession came, we the taxpayers bailed out these financial institutions who put Obama in office. The financial institutions is running the show and we are their insurance policy. It is as simple as that. It doesn't matter who the president is.

People say that China is taking jobs away. It is an illusion. Outsourcing during a recession is inevitable because corporations want cheap labor so they can keep their high salaries and huge bonuses. China has invested billions in US Treasury bonds; not great investment. They could have easily invested in more lucrative deals, and in euros no less. But they are holding up our economy because US and China's markets are intrinsically tied to each other. Not to mention that the chinese workers, underpaid and overworked, are also suffering unemployment highs, obviously from corporate greed. Multinational corporations use China as a manufacturing plant and turned it into a toxic dumping ground.

Half of the deficit is military spending, which is virtually untouchable. It is a matter of what you want to pay for - education, social security, healthcare, or weapons.

Should we blame Obama? or the financial institutions? The Recession is fantastic for the corporations; they are profiting like bandits. We, on the other hand, are left with anger and finger pointing.

There is no way on the planet that someone becomes a member and big supporter for 20 years of a racist white-hating and America-hating group like Jerimiah Wright Jr.'s "Trinity UFC Church"(a black version of the KKK), unless they agree with what's going on and the racist message that they're promoting, as Comrade Obama did. And with the fix in in the Philly New Black Panther voter intimidation case, it's becomming crystal clear that Comrade Obama's hatred for white people is still what it always was.

He may have conned them once into voting for him, but he won't the second time. The only bright spot for Comrade Obama is that he'll never lose his racist tribal members who'll vote for him in 2012 by 97% even if he governs like Idi Amin, Adolph Hitler, or Joe Stalin.

Jennifer, which is it? At first you say it is *Obama* who regards all non-Americans as dolts. Then you *yourself* dismiss them as socialists and Islamic-sympathizers who are ungrateful. Anyway, it is not all Americans who are derided abroad; as I said, I've travelled extensively this year and got affectionate welcomes and curiosity about American culture everywhere I went. It is our UGLIEST face, the face of Christian intolerance, which turns people off. When I ask foreigners what they think of Obama, they use the word "listen". He listens. That is the impression we are making around the world, and our reputation has improved mightily since 2006 when I was last abroad.

By the way, have Republicans stopped pretending to be interested in deficit reduction? McConnell and Kyl have came right out and said that they don't believe tax cuts should be paid for.

You know, if Democrats started a nationwide campaign of lying and saying that stimulus pays for itself through increased economic activity, I'd be fine with it. It's a lie, but dollar for dollar, it's a much smaller lie than saying tax cuts pay for themselves. A stimulus dollars come significantly closer to paying for themselves than a tax cut dollar.

Final possible diagnosis, the press has fallen out of love with mr. transparency:

In other words, they were true patriots miserably deceived, as were so many others, by Obama’s youthful sparkle, redlining campaign energy and ostensible good faith, convinced that he would set the country on the right path, that he would heal the racial divide, that he would solve the financial crisis, that he would seek bi-partisan cooperation, that he would hunt down Osama bin Laden as per his campaign rhetoric, that he would close Gitmo, that he would fight only “good wars” or “wars of necessity,” that he would pacify the Middle East and that he would eventually bring peace and harmony to prevail among belligerents, both at home and abroad. But it didn’t happen that way; in fact, every major issue he has addressed has demonstrably worsened, every touted success has been a fiasco. And so the scribblers and talking heads will scramble to cover their derrières. Unlikely as this many seem at the present moment, expect headlines like We Were Had or We Hoped for Change—and Were Disappointed. And remember, you read it here.

One by one, then, the media dominoes will begin to fall. Naturally, they will not admit to evincing both frugal intelligence and political partiality. Rather, the fourth estate, apologetic and shame-faced, will insist on its bona fides and claim that no one is infallible, to err is human—and every other redemptive platitude it can think of. Like Letterman confessing to an affair, the media will attempt to recoup its public standing by being “refreshingly candid.”

Obama groupie David Brooks aired his doubts back in March 2009; while trashing the Republicans pro forma, he conceded that “Barack Obama is not who we thought he was.” Bloviating pundits like Chris Matthews, Keith Olbermann and Howard Fineman have already started to turn. Indeed, even a dinosaur like Frank Rich, roaming the Jurassic Park of the New York Times, is growing uncomfortable, lamenting the White House’s “record of incompletes” and suggesting that Obama should “start running his administration with a 9/11 sense of urgency.” Of course, there is no chance of this happening. Ultimately, the media will put on a great show of confessional humility, honesty and frankness. And then, once more, it will be business as usual. It will be time to attend another race and root for the wrong contestant.

Of course, with this present ident, it is surely "all of the above'., so many failures abound it is difficult to pick just one.

Posted by: present-and-unaccounted-for | July 14, 2010 1:32 PM | Report abuse

Then again, it could be the incompetency:

For Obama is his own worst enemy. He multiplies mistake upon mistake for the simple reason that he just can’t help himself. He is plainly unqualified for office, has a “Chicago way” shrewdness and ruthlessness about him but is neither very intelligent nor particularly knowledgeable, is prone to an unsavory and conspicuous degree of self-adulation, leans toward feckless and inappropriate remarks and is given to expressing a certain petulance when he is crossed.

Additionally, he has surrounded himself with a team of manifest incompetents who couldn’t change a tire if their lives depended on it, does not understand the reality of Islamic terror and actually abets it through complacency, “outreach” and enabling Muslim charities to funnel what we might call “martyr money” to terrorist organizations (aka fulfilling zakat). No less distressing, he seems totally incapable of gauging the dynamics of the geopolitical arena and, perhaps most damaging of all to his reputation, projects the impression of golfing while the nation burns.

The race may not be to the swift, or at least not always, but it is definitely not to the slow. And Obama, for all his verbal torque and the haste he evinces in implementing his partisan domestic policies, is actually extremely slow: slow in recognizing international threats to America’s security, slow in making military decisions regarding troop allocations, slow in repairing America’s permeable borders, slow to shut the revolving door for lobbyists, slow to reduce pork, earmarks, no-bid contracts and the like, slow in offering even faint support to Iran’s anti-Khamenei protesters and slower in meaningfully confronting the Iranian regime’s nuclear aspirations, devastatingly slow in reacting to the greatest ecological disaster in American history. He will be remembered as the pit-stop president or the president who, puttering along by starts and stops, crashed into the restraining wall. He will never see the chequered flag.

The organization is being abused by partisan forces - who are trying to make a political point which is actually unfounded.

The NAACP should lose its tax-emempt status for this blantantly political move.

Any American who thinks - will quickly identify the NAACP resolution as counter-productive.

If the NAACP is serious - they can condemn the black riots in Seattle - and miriad of problems in the black community itself. Have we heard anyone at the NAACP talking about all the shootings in Chicago ?

No.

Chicago has become a free-fire zone - and the NAACP would rather drum up false charges of racism for political ends.

Do something real.

Oh, good grief. Al-Qaeda isn’t a racist organization — it’s an organization that kills regardless of race anyone who stands in the way of its Islamo-fascist vision. The notion that it is racist is not only ignorant but also transparently manipulative. Does the administration really think that Africans can only be motivated if they think race is behind the slaughter of their people? And does Obama mean to suggest that al-Qaeda is pro-white? The mind reels.

It is this sort of thing that fills one with dread and raises this question: is there no limit to the lengths Obama will go to avoid spelling out the real motive behind Islamic fundamentalist terror? It’s the Islamic fundamentalism, of course. The Obami, however, would rather make up a counter-factual narrative and introduce a potentially divisive racial theme (don’t we want Europeans to take the war on terror seriously? what about Indonesians?) into the worldwide war against terrorism than be candid with the American people. Despite his worldly credentials, Obama’s foreign policy is strikingly condescending toward the rest of the world. Muslims will get confused and upset if we identify radical Islam as the basis for terrorism! Africans won’t join us unless they think it’s all about race!

I think we need a post-post-racial commander in chief who doesn’t assume that the rest of the world is populated by dolts

present-and-unaccounted-for:
I'm inclined to agree with President Obama: I think anti-black African racism among Islamic fundamentalist Arabs has a LOT to do with their willingness to blow buildings in Tanzania, Kenya, and now Uganda to smithereens, to say nothing of the depradations visited by the Sudanese government on the black South and Darfur. Anyone who has travelled in North Africa has seen this prejudice up close and I'm not surprised that al-Qaeda harnesses it.
What's more, the political strategy of showing black South Africans that multicultural America is their natural ally and not the backwards Islamists is a valuable chip in the global struggle against Islamist ideology. Convincing the rest of the world that our way of thinking is better and more rewarding than that of our enemies: it's called POLITICS.

Felons Put Franken Over the Top

It's no secret why our Democrat rulers will not tolerate the enforcement of immigration law: Third World peasants, who will be the first to wind up on welfare as taxes and regulations strangle the economy, reliably vote for them. The same is true of felons — fortunately for lame comedian and unhinged ultra-left blowhard Al Franken, who rode their illegal votes into the Senate:

A new study by the Minnesota Majority found that at least 341 convicted felons in heavily Democratic Minneapolis-St. Paul who voted illegally in the 2008 Senate race. And it looks quite likely that felons gave Franken his narrow Senate victory.
The six month vote recount in the Senate race was a torturous process. The morning after November 4, 2008 election, Senator Norm Coleman lead Al Franken by 725 votes. Correcting for typos cut Coleman's margin to 215, and a recount by all the counties reduced it further to 192.
Once the state canvassing board had looked into the intent of voters and counted 953 previously rejected absentee ballots, the final total had reversed that count and handed Franken a 312 vote victory.
This should not be a surprise, especially after the results of the Minnesota Majority study. With this small number of votes separating the two candidates even just hundreds of illegal voters can alter the outcome. By any measure, felons overwhelmingly vote for Democrats.
This is because they share Democrats' moral outlook, believing in coercion and self-indulgence as devoutly as patriots believe in liberty and responsibility. They also share the Dems' economic outlook: wealth is something you let others create, then seize. This is why Bill Clinton took 93% of the felon vote in 1996.

Unsurprisingly, Democrats want to broaden the felon vote, so that they won't have to cheat as much as they did in Minnesota — and can be expected to do on a massive scale in 2012, when the Community Organizer in Chief falls back on his ACORN/Black Panther base to spare him from the wrath of those voters who wish this country well and are not criminals or parasites.

Could it be his racism?

It seems a lifetime ago that Obama represented hope for a post-racial presidency and in fact a post-racial era in American politics. Like so much else about Obama, the reality is the opposite of what was promised. Jake Tapper relates a rather amazing effort to inject race into the war against Islamic terrorists: In an interview earlier today with the South African Broadcasting Corporation to air in a few hours, President Obama disparaged al Qaeda and affiliated groups’ willingness to kill Africans in a manner that White House aides say was an argument that the terrorist groups are racist.

Not that they want to kill infidels, they want to kill blacks. Absurd. Obambi can't bring himself to utter the truth at all.

The question on election day is who is more unpopular and who gets out the vote.

The true R advantage is that in an off year election the Rs have the passion.

Where this analysis is most weak is in the lack of comparison to alternatives. The Fix analyzes the president's poll numbers in a vacuum, which has the potential to mislead. As we know, nature abors a vacuum, so if the electorate is 'down' on Obama, surely we should look at the numbers to find what they prefer. As it turns out, Obama's numbers, while down, are still higher than the other groups polled: congressional dems & repubs. Repubs continue to bring up the rear, making me, at least, wonder where voters will turn for an alternative to the president. I also question the meme that the midterms will be a referendum on the president. Where this is perhaps most plausible is in voter enthusiasm; if white dems are down on the president, and thus fail to bother to vote, the Repubs might have a chance to capitalize on this alleged wave. On the other hand, if white dems are thinking "I'm disappointed that Obama hasn't forced his agenda the way Bush did, but I'll be damned if I'm going to vote for the GOP," then maybe these polls are misleading the analysts, who are perhaps a mite too eager to cast this election as another 1994.

from the poll:
3. How much confidence do you have in [ITEM] to make the right decisions for the country's future - a great deal of confidence, a good amount, just some or none at all?

7/11/10 - Summary Table

..........-Grt deal/Good amt-..---- Some/None ---
..........NET..Great..Good....NET..Some..None..No.opn
a..Obama...43...24....19......57....28....29......*
b..GOP.....26....8....18......73....43....29......1
c..Dems....32...12....20......67....35....32......1

Where does the voter frustrated with Obama turn? To the Repubs with a 73% disapproval / 26% approval rating? Are you frigging high?

Bill Clinton did not balance any budget.

The Republicans in Congress balanced those budgets - Bill Clinton had to be dragged kicking and screaming into those budgets - and Clinton vetoed several budgets before the national budget was finally put on the proper track to be balanced.

So Obama is LYING.

Politico: “House Speaker Nancy Pelosi bashed White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs Tuesday night, even as the president’s top spokesman continued to backpedal from his assertion that Democrats could lose control of the House in the November election… “How could [Gibbs] know what is going on in our districts?” Pelosi told her members in the caucus meeting in the basement of the Capitol Tuesday night. “Some may weigh his words more than others. We have made our disagreement known to the White House.”

How could he know? Well…

Obama's disapproval ratint is 47%

Hispanics who are here legally are very much against illegal immigration - so the idea that Obama is making a play for the entire hispanic community is ridiculous - all Obama is doing is abusing the Justice Department and Obama is using taxpayer funds for political purposes.

It is clear that the democrats will show the polls of white voters and claim that they are evidence of racism.

However, isn't it the blacks who are being racist ? - they are sticking with Obama not on account of the issues, but rather based on the color of his skin.

Surely, the white vote should be considered the "control" group - to utilize a testing term.

When Obama entered office, he inherited a budget deficit that reflected the toxic combination of recession, bailouts and runaway entitlement programs. But rather than getting the government’s finances under control, Obama and his allies in Congress poured gasoline on the fire with trillion-dollar boondoggles.

To put the recent spending binge in context, consider this: At the end of 2008, just before Obama took office, the federal debt was about 40 percent of our nation’s total economy. Now, according to a recent Congressional Budget Office report, the debt will explode to 62 percent of our economy by the end of this year.

If we consider off-budget liabilities like Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, underfunded entitlement promises and the budget effects embedded in the Democrats’ new health care bill, the fiscal picture gets even worse.

In a bizarre development, the Democratic-controlled House won’t even pass a budget for the first time in decades. Any family or business knows you can’t live within your means without a budget. Congressional Democrats have now announced they won’t even try.

ObamaCare Begins Funding Abortion

That didn't take long:

The Obama administration has officially approved the first instance of taxpayer funded abortions under the new national government-run health care program. …
The Obama Administration will give Pennsylvania $160 million to set up a new "high-risk" insurance program under a provision of the federal health care legislation enacted in March.
It has quietly approved a plan submitted by an appointee of pro-abortion Governor Edward Rendell under which the new program will cover any abortion that is legal in Pennsylvania.
So much for the laughable claims by "principled" Demonrats like the baby-killer Bart Stupak that Obama's patently phony executive order would prevent this from happening.

Promises that ObamaCare would not coercively finance abortion were lies. Promises that it would not cause the deficit to explode were lies. As for the promises that there won't be death panels by which liberal bureauweenies decide who lives and who dies — Obama's recess appointment to head Medicare and Medicaid Donald Berwick has this to say:

The decision is not whether or not we will ration care — the decision is whether we will ration with our eyes open.

Major wars have been fought over less than what ObamaCare alone will do to this country.

• Obama administration does nothing to stop Bush-Cheney- spawned electromagnetic torture and subjugation, franchised out to nationwide federal-local fusion center network.

All of those cell towers you see all over America are NOT all for phone calls.

Some of them are TORTURE TOWERS — part of a nationwide microwave/laser radio frequency “directed energy weapon” system that is being used by operatives of the multi-agency Homeland Security-run “fusion center” network to silently torture, impaiir, and physically and neurologically degrade the functioning and well-being of extrajudicially, unjustly ‘”targeted” citizens.

And the criminal use of this precision-targeted domestic weapon system to attack and impair U.S. citizens is being done WITHOUT THE KNOWLEDGE AND CONSENT OF CONGRESS or high state officials.

EXHIBIT A: U.S. Patent No. 7629918, held by Raytheon Corp., for the "Multi-functional Microwave Laser Radio Frequency Directed Energy Weapon System."
