"Worst Week in Washington" Winner: Charlie Rangel

Just as we were debating who should win "Worst Week in Washington" this week, a video of embattled New York Rep. Charlie Rangel (D) dancing onstage at his 80th birthday party surfaced.

Case closed.

From his impassioned -- if occasionally oddball -- defense of the ethics charges against him on Tuesday to the party in New York City on Thursday, it became abundantly clear that Rangel had no intention of going quietly into that good night.

That's bad news for House Democrats who will now have to contend with ethics trials for Rangel and California Rep. Maxine Waters, who offered her own defense in a long press conference today, this fall.

We wrote of the New York Democrat in the dead-tree edition of the Post:

"Rangel's political kamikaze mission might be gratifying -- in a score-settling sort of way -- for the New York Democrat, but a high-profile ethics trial less than two months before the November elections could undermine his party's promise to 'drain the swamp' in Washington."
