Most Hateable Successful Athlete?

Nascar's Chase for the Cup begins Sept. 14 and Kyle Busch has been far and away this year's best driver. He's also, by most accounts, the most loathed driver. So we wondered: Who is the most hateable successful athlete you can think of? (Note: does not have to be active)

Can anyone say rape??? But he did have enough money to buy his way out of it.

Carmelo Anthony, the "role model" who appeared in Baltimore's infamous "Don't snitch" video. And the NBA wonders about its thug-image problem...

I don't know, but that Jankovic sure would make a good Bride of Dracula.. She plays that freaky Spanish chick and it's like two species of bloodsuckers squaring off in Blade 5!! but, please, don 't hate..

I love to hate Lance Armstrong. I also hate to love him. He showed his sparkling personality when he chased down a break containing Filippo Simeoni in stage 18 of the 2004 tour. He already was winning the overall, however Simeoni was in the midst of court proceedings involving Lance. Apparently, cyclists use dope but they don't want anyone to know about it.

Tony Romo. Hands Down.

Tom Brady, definitely Brady. does it have to be rational? The name just leaps to mind. I love Chipper Jones. I hate Tom Brady. It has nothing to do with anything other than he's the overdog, the favored, the three-time Super-Bowl-winning pretty boy who posed for Esquire in a sailor suit q.b for Billy the Cheating Czech "Movies Anyone?" Bellichik. Actually, it has nothing to do with the sailor suit or Baby Daddy episodes or cheating. Sports hatred is irrational. I hated Joe Montana. It's that Brady beat the underdogs, mercillesly, especially last year, and is insufferable.

Posted by: flynnie | September 8, 2008 12:41 PM

How can you hate Tony Romo? He's having more fun than anyone in the NFL! But Brady is all about the dark, serious business of winning. Really hatable, unless he plays for your team.

No contest!!! Most hated successful US athlete of all time is Ty Cobb. OJ is the most recent hated successful US athlete.

Posted by: Bruce Shulman | September 8, 2008 12:51 PM

In the 00's (until yesterday) it was Tom Brady. Now i feel sorry for him and need to find a new source of hatred.

In the 90's it was Bill Romanowski.

In the 80's it was Lyle (sack dance) Alzado.

LOL @ shemma:

AMEN to Sam! Cowboys and Blue Devils are #1 and #1a. Follwed closely by the Yankees!

Posted by: Herb | September 8, 2008 2:05 PM

A-Rod, Derek Jeter, Tom Brady, Eli Manning, Roger Clemens, Big Papi, the Big Three, Tiki Barber... For years, an uninformed viewer would have thought ESPN was a local NY sports network (albeit one with a basketball-focused affiliate in Durham, N.C.). Then the Red Sox finally beat the Yankees (I was pleased at the time), and now Boston is the new New York. Do ESPN et al. realize that more than 90% of us don't live in either of these cities and DON'T CARE ABOUT THESE EFFING TEAMS!? Enough already with Yankees-Red Sox, and Eli Manning worship, and Brett Favre on the Jets (what a great bit of synergy for ESPN), and Belichick's genius, and Brady's love life, and "Red Sox nation" (i.e. people who've never even been to Boston but suddenly remembered about three years ago that they had always been huge Red Sox fans). Rest of the country, unite, and ignore Boston and New York!

It's probably easier to come up w/ a manageable list of likeable athletes as there are so many that you can just hate. Athletic turds: Bonds, Cobb, Reggie Jackson, Terrell Owens, Muhammad Ali (?), Isaiah Thomas, Ron Artest, Carmelo Anthony, Lebron James, Carlos Boozer, Randy Moss, Billy Martin, Pete Rose, Ray Chapman, Kareem Abdul Jabbar, Larry Bird, Don Drysdale, Sal Magli, Jimmy Connors, John McEnroe, Ilie Nastase, etc etc etc etc etc

Posted by: Curmudgeon | September 8, 2008 3:37 PM

Cristiano Ronaldo for sure. His smugness and arrogance make me want to throw up. Also, his transfer saga from Manchester United to Real Madrid was the equivalent of the Brett Favre drama here - nausiating after about five minutes - except Ronaldo ended up staying in England. Too much of a pretty boy drama queen despite being "the best footballer in the world"

Don't take the bait, dude. The person posting Art Monk, Darrell Green and Cal Ripken is obviously the same person and is looking to stir up the pot by naming the most respected athletes from the DC area.

Chad Ocho Stinko would be a good candidate, but only if he was at all "successful". Being a spineless, gloating gloryboy on a loser team does not qualify. Sorry.

I gotta go with Bonds. Really, who wanted him to break the record? And despite how much people dislike ARod, I expect most would rather see him hold the title than Bonds. That's some pretty strong evidence.

Honorable mention to Belichek. Definitely successful, but utterly hateable.

2/ Ray Lewis, allegedly held some poor slob up in an alley so his buddy could gut him with a serrated hunting knife. The case couldn't move forward due to the no snitch code common in the thug world!

3/ Pacman Jones, street thug masqurading as an athelete. Ask the guy his homey put in a wheelchair for life due to his antics at the strip club.

4/ Jack Tatum, after paralizing a Darrel Stingly with a vicious forearm to the head showed no remorse. Truley despicable!

5/ Pete Rose, notorious liar, cheat and all around low life bottom feeder. He also ended the carrer of a young Cleveland catcher by barreling through him shoulder first in an all star game. The hit was legal but Rose instead of being shaken up or apologetic said,"IF YOU PLAY WITH THE BULL YOUR GONNA GET THE HORNS"!

You want to hate someone, Hate Brett Farve - dammit at this rate he's got to hate himself. Dude has been washed up for like 3 years, but he can't walk away. Have to agree with Bruce Shulman there. Historically Ty Cobb was the most hated athlete of all time. He would sit on the dugout to sharpen his spikes. He killed a man. He would pull fans out of the stands to beat on them. He was a unapologetic racist. When he died, no one came to his funeral.

Are you nuts? Where is the evidence to support your allegations about Darrell Green? I find it very hard to believe these accusations of smoking crack when he is now leading an anti-tobacco campaign, stealing from CVS when he has enough money to buy a CVS franchise, or "lack of dedication to sport" when he's NFL hall of famer who played for 20 seasons.

Posted by: David | September 10, 2008 12:34 PM

Jack Tatum, former Oakland safety, ranks #1 on my list. This guy delivers a blow, an unnecessary hit at that, which paralyzes another player, Darryl Stingley, in a meaningless exhibition game over 30 years ago. Rather than express any sorrow over what happened, he writes a book in which he boasts about hurting other players and at no time did he ever try to reach out to Darryl, who died last year from quadriplegia. I understand that Tatum is now suffering from diabetes and ironically enough, lost his legs and is confined to a wheelchair. Karma is a b!

McEnroe handled bad line calls wrong but if you watched the replays back then before the new challenge stuff he was usually right, his eyesight is still very good from the booth.

Posted by: Anonymous | September 10, 2008 1:00 PM

OJ and then Bonds - in defense of Pete Rose even tho he should have been reprimanded he should be in the Hall of Fame just for his baseball exploits and accomplishments. The dude played all positions except pitcher, plus hit .300 most of the time thru his whole career and all time career hits leader. You can't take that away from him.

Posted by: Pete Rose | September 10, 2008 1:10 PM

'Jack Tatum, former Oakland safety, ranks #1 on my list. This guy delivers a blow, an unnecessary hit at that, which paralyzes another player, Darryl Stingley, in a meaningless exhibition game over 30 years ago." ------------------------------------------
Karma/Larry

Jack Tatum delivered a hit any db of his time and era would have. As an accidental result Darryl Stingley suffered for it.

-------------------------------------------
"Rather than express any sorrow over what happened, he writes a book in which he boasts about hurting other players and at no time did he ever try to reach out to Darryl, who died last year from quadriplegia."

If you're going to pull from your apparently deficient memory, at least get it right. Tatum has expressed a lot of remorse about the Stingley incident in both of his books, and in several interviews I've seen of him since. John Madden also wrote aboout it in his first book. As for not reaching out, Tatum showed up at Stingley's hospital several times, and Stingley's family wouldn't let him in the room. After several attempts, he finally stopped trying. Stingley himself said there was nothing dirty about the hit and in more than a few interviews said he'd come to peace with it and forgiven Tatum in his heart. It was 30 years ago. Get over it.

Posted by: vbxtc | September 10, 2008 1:27 PM

Posted by: dijoe | September 10, 2008 2:40 PM

"Jack Tatum delivered a hit any db of his time and era would have. As an accidental result Darryl Stingley suffered for it."

I disagree. If you read Tatum's book, They Call me Assassin," he reveals that both he and his cohort George Atkinson purposely tried to hurt opposing players to put them out of games. And you're the one with the incorrect facts. The only time Tatum wanted to meet with Stingley was during a telecast in the 90s when Tatum was trying to promote another one of his morbid books. Once Stingley found out what Tatum's intentions were, he declined. Yes, Stingley got past his resentment of Tatum, but he NEVER felt the hit was fair and always maintained that he was a victim of wanton violence in the NFL, which he was.

"I disagree. If you read Tatum's book, They Call me Assassin," he reveals that both he and his cohort George Atkinson purposely tried to hurt opposing players to put them out of games."

Actually I've owned that particular book since it came out have read it cover to cover about a dozen times. As Tatum says, he and Atkinson kept score on their hits, which is not the same as intentionally trying to put someone on the shelf. And as he also said, they made a game out of what they were being paid to do anyway. Maybe you should argue with Al Davis, ESPN, or all of the announcers who glorify the big hit. The NFL sells tapes of their best hits. Take it up with them. And as far as I know, safeties are paid to hit people. The ability to scramble someone's senses has made national heroes out of Ronnie Lott, Steve Atwater, Sean Taylor, Roy Williams, Kenny Easely (sp), and dozens of others. He also spent almost an entire chapter on the Stingly incident, including his remorse at the result of the hit. But apparently you skipped that part. If Stingly had walked away from that hit no one, including him, would probably have ever remembered it. Unfortunately he didn't.

"And you're the one with the incorrect facts. The only time Tatum wanted to meet with Stingley was during a telecast in the 90s when Tatum was trying to promote another one of his morbid books."

John Madden stated in his first book, "Hey, I Wrote a Book", that Tatum tried to visit Stingly while he was still in the hospital, and that he was with him on at least one of those occasions. Since he was there at the time I think I'd rather believe him than take your word for it.

I believe that everything happens for a reason. Daryl Stingly the football player touched many lives and entertained fans. Daryl Stingly the disabled Christian motivational speaker was a source of inpiration to thousands if not millions. Tatum's may not have been the only hand that touched him that day. Think about it.

Go ahead and convince yourself that keeping score on their hits and the whole mood of the story did not mean they were trying to hurt other players. Madden never said the Tatum actually did visit Stingley, and Madden was his coach, of course he wants to paint a better picture. And i am quite sure he had a great deal of remorse when Stingley was paralyzed. Nobody said he didn't have a concience, only that he was cold blooded, played dirty and was in fact one of the most hated athletes of all time. And he deserved it. Just because the NFL makes money off of it, does not make it OK. For the record a few of the people on your list deserve to be on this one as well. i don't believe Ronnie Lott was a cheap shot artist, nor was Easley, the rest were dirty players also, unfortunately including the late #21.

I agree on Darrell Green, just thinking about his CVS-robbing antics turns my stomach. He's a mockery.

Currently - Kobe. No contest.
All Time - O.J

Also hate:
Romo - I'd love to wipe that smirk off his smug face
Terrell Owens - see Romo comment
Bobby Knight - mentally ill and can't accept it so abuses others
Both of the shemale Williams sisters - men who are pretending to be women
Roger Clemens - liar
Michael Wilbon - holier than thou Sean Taylor attacker
John McEnroe - brat
Tiki Barber - arrogant know it all
Reggie Bush - not sure why
Curt Shilling - we don't care about your opinion...shut up

Tony Romo single handingly costing his team that playoff game by not being able to hold a field goal snap and then crying on the bench gave me such pleasure. Perhaps I'm sick, but I really enjoyed it.

I took the same pleasure in seeing Kobe get humiliated in the finals. I hate that rapin' snitch.

Posted by: davey | September 12, 2008 2:33 AM

I hate Reggie Bush too and I also don't know why. There's just something about him.

O.J and Kobe should share a cell together.

Did you notice that during the Olympics, the amount of sexual assaults declined dramatically in Southern Cal and rose drastically in Beijing?

TO and Ocho Stinko. New math: Mouth over talent = no class.

D. Green + Art Monk = successful w/ class

Thus endeath the lesson. Class dismissed

I guess you could say I "dislike" not hate the person "athlete" that triggered this blog. Hate's a powerful word and we shouldn't be encouraged to display the prejudices (we all have) published for all to see. I know this won't change the way people wish to vent, however most of what I've read, is more about jeolousy rather than hate...

Lebron James, Lebron James, Lebron James. Need I say any more

There are so many!

O.J. Simpson - murderer
Kobie Bryant - rapist
Barry Bonds - ego maniac steroid user
A Rod - choking loser
Chad Ocho Crappo! No talent, but a big mouth.
Every single person who has ever played for the Yankees, Cowboys, or Lakers. And every sigle person who is a fan of any of those 3 teams.

Posted by: dw | September 12, 2008 8:43 AM

Phil McHonkey and Ainge with the Celtics stick out as two particularly annoying individuals. Lambier as well.

Joe Theisman - Mark Moseley sets the record for most consecutive field goals in 1982 and big mouth Joe grabs the mike from his hands as Moseley is being interviewed during his shining moment. Remember the disappointed look on Moseley's face?

Cal Ripken holds the record for hitting into the most double plays. And he never let anyone else play even when he needed a rest.

Tony Peters.

Any athlete with more commercials than starts : Brady Quinn

Any Athlete with more commercials than TD passes: Matt Leinart

Any poster talking smack on Darrell Green or Art Monk facetiously or otherwise.

Randy White - No one is hated more by Washington fans than the Cowboys of old and #1 on that list is White.

Neon Deon - A close 2nd.

You hate them, but you can't say they weren't one of the best.

Deion Sanders - comes to the Redskins with all that hype & arrogance and contributes nothing.

Posted by: Anonymous | September 12, 2008 12:28 PM

The Darrell Green comment seems like obvious sarcasm to me. Everyone knows how well respected and liked he is. I think it was meant to show that he is not what some current athletes are today.

Distain for anything Dallas or Duke!! I always say I root for the Terps, Redskins and ABD (Anybody but Duke/Dallas)!

Annoying Announcer - Dukie V.

I'll second the comment on Dan Snyder and Peter Angelos - they have run the teams into the ground b/c its all about the almighty dollar!
