Cutting his losses

Filibuster

...because the founding fathers believed that the Senate is a saucer under a coffee cup that you pour the hot coffee into to cool it down, except it's tea now because of the Tea Party, but the Tea Party people don't want to be in the saucer because they have no intention of cooling down because the Congress can't get anything done because it's so partisan, and the Democrats are trying to ram everything through with no Republican votes, and why can't the Democrats find any Republican votes? Because the Tea Party will primary them, that's why, you better believe it, and they'll be out, out of the cup and out of the saucer, too, right into the soup -- now how do they like that? And then we can go back to the good old days when the filibuster was rarely used -- but that's not what the founding fathers wanted, either, they wanted the filibuster used or else why did they put it in there? Even if they really didn't they probably meant to...(return to the beginning and continue). --Tom Toles

Dear Mr. Toles,
Re: Filibuster.
You are correct in that in the "good old days" the filibuster wasn't used as much. But then no one has been nearly beaten to death in the Senate recently and it's been a while since there was a Civil War. Of course, what you might also want to look at is the increase in the motions of "Cloture" or the ending of debate which have increased in recent days. Both are, in their own ways, abuses of power but then whoever said that politics made sense. Everyone talks about changing the rules but no one will as it's a form of safety valve. Besides that, the majority calling for changes may find itself a minority come this November and of quite a different opinion.

@ErolU

You seem to have a short memory. The opposistion party always acts like this.

Also, everytime either party comes into power they create a larger more authoritarian government. The Democrats and Republicans are not really any different.

Take the issue of fillibuster for example. When the Republicans were in power the Democrats used the EXACT SAME arguments to defend the fillibuster that the Republicans use now. And the Republicans used the EXACT SAME arguments against that the Democrats use now. In many cases these are the same people in Congress then and now. You could use video from 8 years ago of Senators as a rebuttal to themselves now.

Neither party has a monopoly on hypocrisy.

Isn't "to short" something to bet that it will fail? If so, then shorting congress is a very safe bet.

Mr. Toles should know this is not what "short" means. Perhaps as a pun it works. But then I do not see the banks making that decision. They just follow the laws that Congress makes (or in their absence) decides not to make.

He does get one to think.

That's about it, ErolU, only you forgot to mention that they complain about the COST of running their larger authoritarian government. (taxes, remember?)

Things look so much better when you hide the expenses like Bushie did with the 2 "wars."

They are quite a group of hypocrites and liars. Scary that nearly half the nation votes for them consistently. That IS scary.

For a very good article about the political context of the Tea Party, its developement and likely evolution, I recommend that you read:

Republican scene is now dominated by the Tea party and Fox types and all Republican politicians are in fear and cannot stand up to them. Prominent politicians are cowering, otherwise they will be "primaried." I liked the use of "primary" as a verb. Perhaps it is a first. Republicans obviously want to have the Democrats fail at any cost. I believe they have nothing positive or meaningful to say, and they know it. What did Republicans achieve when they were in power? Yes, what? We also had "eight dark" years. Everytime they come to power the size of the government increases. And then they turn around and blame others.
