Welcome to Travel Log

K.C. Summers

Welcome to Travel Log, the Washington Post Travel section's new blog. I'm K.C. Summers, the Travel section editor, one of eight editors and writers on the staff who'll be contributing to the blog. We're thrilled to have a daily posting ground where we can pass on all the travel tips and tales we accumulate from our trips, plus breaking travel news and consumer tips. And now we finally have a place to post all those hot deals and bargains that expire before we can get them into the paper.

We very much hope that this will be a two-way endeavor, since we figured out long ago that we learn as much from our readers as they do from us. It's a confusing travel world out there, so if you can help even one hapless passenger make it through the TSA line with his or her carry-on (and dignity) intact, please share with the class. Or just make us laugh -- God knows there are plenty of travel absurdities these days. Jump in early and often with your own hard-earned tips.

If you're a regular reader of the Post Travel section or a participant in our weekly Internet chat, you already know that our great strength is in our range of interests. Between the eight of us, we've pretty much got every type of traveler covered (although the quirky kind may be a tad overrepresented). Also, we don't do brochure-speak, so you won't be reading about any "bustling villages frozen in time" and that sort of thing. You'll find our individual bios and photos posted in the column to the left, but here's a quick cheat sheet so you can keep us straight:

* KC is the latte-swilling museum-goer who hates Vegas and theme parks. Which is just fine, because...
* John is Everytraveler, who adores Vegas and theme parks.
* Cindy is the doting parent who loves family travel, nature and the California coast in equal proportion.
* Carol is the bargains maven, who lives, eats, drinks, breathes and sleeps deals.
* Steve is the outdoor-adventure guy who's equally happy investigating the world's bars.
* Anne is the resident budget traveler who knows all the best cheap sleeps in China.
* Gary is the man-about-the-world who speaks more languages than the rest of us put together.
* Andrea is the Energizer travel writer bunny who thinks sleep is highly overrated.

From left to right, "The Flight Crew" (seated) Andrea Sachs, Cindy Loose, Carol Sottili. (Standing) Gary Lee, Anne McDonough, K. C. Summers, Steve Hendrix, and John Deiner.
(Julia Ewan--TWP)

So that's who we are and what we aim to do here. We hope you'll visit us often -- between your own trips, of course.

Congrats on Travel Log! It's great to finally match faces with names (voices and words), too. I look forward to following the blog. Keep up the good work.

My wife and I are planning a one-month cycling trip to northern Vietnam in March. We're looking for tips on getting the most reasonable airfare (DC-Hanoi), a good, inexpensive place to stay in Hanoi, and current road tips from someone who has recently cycled the northern route listed in Lonely Planet's Cycling Vietnam.

My daughter and I are going to England Feb 17-25 this year. We will be motoring and walking in South England doing a loop starting at Guildford, Portsmouth, Bath, Gloucester, Oxford, then back to Heathrow. We will do Stonehenge on the way to Bath. When looking at a map we noticed where Stonehenge was. We bought Frommer's guidebook and are trying to find places to visit from that source. Any suggestions for something to visit that maybe not mentioned in that book. Anyone encounter any particular problem when driving the English roads, other than the left hand side driving of course. Thank you for any help.

David, your Vietnam trip sounds great, but we want to avoid using this forum for individual trip planning. We do have two ways to help readers with specific questions, though. You can email us at travelqa@washpost.com -- that's our Travel Q&A column that runs every Sunday in the print edition and online. Or you can join our weekly Internet chat, most Mondays from 2 to 3 p.m. on www.washingtonpost.com/travel. If you can't join us live, you can send your question in advance, then read the transcript afterward. We can't answer every question we get, but we give it our best shot -- and the great thing about the chat is that other readers chime in too, with their own tips and advice.

I am so psyched that you guys are starting this blog! I couldn't always make it to the chats, but this is ten times better because we can all chime in on each separate topic and not have to wait until next week's chat to find an answer.

Maybe this comment is somewhat off the beaten path, but I want to give credit and kudos to the captain and crew of United flight 339 from BWI to Denver on Friday January 12. While we endured a 4 hour delay waiting in the terminal for a repair to the weather radar, the gate agent kept us informed of the progress and expectations for the departure. However, the reason for this missive occured after we boarded. After all of the passengers were seated and the door closed, the flight attendants approached all of the Air Force personnel on board and there about 12-15 in camo uniforms. Asking if each was returning from deployment, the attendants then escorted each to a seat in First Class. All were, in fact, headed for leave after duty in the Middle East. When I asked an attendant if this represented a policy of United, she said that she did not know but it was the captain's routine. While I've flown about two dozen times since 9/11, I've never witnessed this courtesy before and thought that it was worthy of mention.
BTW, the blog is a great idea.

Just found this blog and I'm very excited about it! I am going with a group of 12 friends to the Dominican Republic for a week in March. We are staying in Cabarete and have rented a beach front villa from VRBO.com and is managed by www.cabaretevillas.com. It is in a gated community with 24 hour security, backup water and electric. Some of my group have expressed concerns about security. I've heard good things but know there may be issues. One friend heard that a group of 11 guys went to Punta Cana for bachelor party trip and took 3 security guards with them. Is it that unsafe? Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!

I tried to find the site that featured more of the pictures of the photo contest winners. Looked for the site mentioned and it wasn't there. Where are the other photos? The photos in the paper were great but would have liked to see more!!
