Will Wonders Ever Cease?

You've probably heard something about the move to pick a new set of Seven Wonders (for a fun way to test your knowledge of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World -- I flunked -- go to this site).
The Associated Press recently reported that Egypt (home to the only ancient wonder still in existance) doesn't feel it should deign to compete; you can catch up on the story here.
On the one hand, I see Egypt's point.
On the other, I think this whole campaign is a fantastic way to bring attention to magnificent places that never had a chance at being on the original list (chosen, as it was, by folks who hadn't been all over the world yet to see what was out there; that's one of the reasons floated for why Machu Picchu, for one, wasn't on the list). All structures built or discovered before 2000 are eligible, and it's all up to the public--this is truly a people's choice award.
(As a side note, number 18 on the finalist list just jumped into the news again today; read about a discovery at Stonehenge here.)
The original list of 77 contenders was narrowed down to 21 finalists; it's up to us to vote. For all of the details, go to the New7Wonders site. The New 7 Wonders of the World will be announced in Lisbon, Portugal on July 7, 2007.

wow...I distinctly remember being told that Lalibella was one of the Seven Wonders, yet it doesn't appear on any list! Seems like it ought to. Anyway, here's an interesting list of many 7 Wonders: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seven_Wonders_of_the_World

Macchu Picchu wasn't on the ancient list because the Greeks hadn't been to Peru?! Yes, but I can think of a better reason--Macchu Picchu probably wasn't even built until the 1400s, making it considerably younger than, say, Notre Dame of Paris.
