Get Ready, Get Set . . . Shoot!

It's that time of year again...spring fever sets in (though it's so cold here in Washington today! Bring back the balmy weather!) and we announce the rules for our annual Travel Photo Contest. The winning photos get prime real estate in the Travel section this August, and also will be featured in an online gallery. The rules are below... but first, a few words.
One tip I picked up a few years ago and can't emphasize enough is to take pictures of signs before entering and upon leaving museums, churches, towns, etc.; these photos don't rate space in my albums but they're invaluable for captioning the images after the fact. And captioning, whether you're dealing with online photo albums or 4x6 prints, is definitely something you want to do sooner rather than later; by this time next year, all of those lovely details you remembered when you took the shot will be as distant as your vacation destination.
I also take a digital point-and-shoot along with my SLR and all its gear; there are places where the SLR just calls too much attention to itself, but I'd hate to miss the shot. Also, my point-and-shoot runs off of AA batteries, which you can get the world over, handy when my big baby's battery pack fuzzes out away from the hotel room.
If you're heading out on the road soon, check out some of these resources, which offer tips specifically for travel photography: Fodors.com,
BraveNewTraveler.com and TravelPhotographersNetwork.net.
We'll be reprinting the rules periodically in the print edition of the Travel section, but here's the nitty gritty:
One entry per person. Photo must have been taken in 2006-07. Attach a sticker or notecard with your name, contact info and a detailed caption to the back of the photo (please do not send loose sheets of paper; make sure the information sticks to photo back). Photos, which are nonreturnable, may be color or black and white, and in print form. (Sorry, we can't accept slides or digital picture files.) Send prints to The Washington Post Travel Section Photo Contest, 1150 15th St. NW, Washington, D.C. 20071. Entries must be received by July 20. Photos become the property of The Washington Post, which may edit, publish, distribute and republish them in any form. No purchase necessary. Post employees and their immediate families are not eligible. Please do not call to ask if we have received your entry. The winning photos will be published in August.

The images are chosen on their merit alone (you shouldn't need to read the caption to understand the photo) but we really like to have caption information as well. We are a travel section, after all, so it's nice to know where in the world the images were taken.

I notice you ask for a detailed caption of the photos. What part do the captions play in picking the winner? Just wondering.
And I'm looking forward to seeing this year's winners. Hopefully one of them will be me.
Thanks.
