BWI: Oh, That Drive
The folks at Aviation.com must have been warned not to poll me for their "Top 10 Easiest U.S. Airports to Get to" survey. In the study, the company ranked Boston's Logan airport at the top (I concur: the subway-shuttle combo, Logan Express and water taxis are easy and almost enjoyable), Reagan National as No. 2 (agree again, love that you can choose between yellow and blue lines) and BWI as . . . No. 10. I know, it is at the bottom of the list, but if I were the pollster, I would place it last-last. Like after an airport strip atop a mountain in Montana.
But don't cry, BWI. I don't dislike you for being you. In fact, the airport itself isn't nearly as bad as, say, Dulles, which was seemingly planned by a blind cat. Though the lines can be ridiculous, that is more a curse of the current industry, not BWI (though Southwest, please be imperial and take over the other airlines' counter space).
My complaint is the drive -- yes, I'm being D.C.-centric -- which requires an unpredictable ride through the city, to I-495, to I-95. That's three unpleasant routes, all of which have the potential to be clogged with flight-missing traffic. (Disclaimer: A few weeks ago, I was in a car accident on I-95 returning from BWI and caused a knot of cars. Sincere apologies, and thanks officers and bystanders for tending to us as we drove the vehicle out of the forest.)
The study, however, didn't rate the airports on ease of driving (I just wanted to vent). It praised BWI for having a free shuttle from the terminals to the MARC station. Well, dear Aviation.commers, MARC does not run on weekends or holidays, when a lot of people travel. (Yes, I know, you can take Amtrak, but it can be overcrowded with East Corridor commuters and costs more money.) It does have the BWI Express Metro bus, but that is a long, two-part slog.
So do I think BWI deserves to be a 10? No. Then, again, I would prefer to be driven to the airport by a private driver, who drops me off at a private security line, where I then catch my private plane. No wonder Aviation.com didn't ask for my opinion.
