Travel Deals Requiring Fast Action

Carol Sottili

Several airlines are offering short-lived sales to Europe. Here are your choices:

* United and Lufthansa (codeshare partners) have a sale to cities throughout Europe; last day to buy is tomorrow (Thursday, Sept. 20). Fares are not dirt cheap from Washington (for example, it'll cost about $709 round trip to Frankfurt, including taxes), but if you can leave from New York, you'll realize some very good savings ($552 round trip to Frankfurt including taxes). Depart Sept. 25-Oct. 28 and return Sept. 30-Nov. 27; best fares for Monday-Thursday travel. Info: www.united.com or www.lufthansa.com.

* Aer Lingus has a sale that ends at midnight tonight (Wednesday, Sept. 19). Prices are fantastic - $379 round trip from Dulles to Dublin nonstop, including taxes. Some dates are sold out, but there is still plenty of availability. Travel Nov. 1-Feb. 29. Go to www.aerlingus.com.

I just experienced Homeland Security at its worst. I am an American citizen just returning from a pleaseure trip to Europe. I arrived about 3 p.m. on United from Rome. The area where passports are checked was jammed with about 700 persons waiting in snake lines to go through only four checkpoints. It took me 55 minutes. My suggestion is that Mr. President, all Senators and Congressmen, and all Cabinet heads be required to make at least one commercial flight into this country from overseas. I think there would be some changes made. Thanks for letting me vent.

Compared to some of the regular Lufthansa fares, I think the sale is a decent deal. It is a shame that we don't get as good of deals out of DC as out of NY, but I like the airline enough over others that I think the price is worth it.

John- I agree with you on that note. Security has become the biggest headache to flying internationally. I had to go through 3 check points in just one terminal of London once...
