TripAdvisor: 10 Funniest Traveler Comments of 2007

K.C. Summers

Ah, TripAdvisor: Can't live with it, can't live without it. Like most travelers, I compulsively check it when I'm planning a trip to an unfamiliar place, looking for patterns in the wildly idiosyncratic user reviews. And the site is definitely easier to navigate since its redesign. But man, you have to wonder sometimes about the (a) motivations and (b) IQs of some of the reviewers. Now, to confirm our suspicions, the site has come out with the 10 funniest traveler posts of 2007. We couldn't make this stuff up.

1. Not So Great Expectations
"I could have done without the blood-stained mattress and the (actual) chunk of poop on my bedspread, but I didn't expect the Hilton."
2. Rest in Peace
"I spent the night in the (hotel) room and experienced a friendly spirit. This presence got into bed with me, an old lady, she was nice and I just patted her on the head and we had a comfortable restful sleep. I think I will ask for a different room next time."
3. Mime Over Matter
"The neighborhood is filled with aggressive mimes, including one sitting on a toilet bowl (how creative). Room cards are changed for no reason and you cannot understand why you can't get into your room. All in all it was a very unpleasant stay."
4. Deep Thoughts
"Time could be spent pondering over the meaning of some of the many safety signs around the complex. Out of the several we managed to identify, the two we found to be of greatest use were 1. Not to step on any crocodiles whilst bare foot, and 2. No ugly, or spotty children to frequent the pool."
5. Is That Really What You Meant?
"I echo the sentiments of the previous reviewer. The ambience is lacking to be sure, but the food is like angels copulating on your tongue."
6. Freezing Over
"Sleeping in the street during a blizzard would be better than staying at this hell-hole. The place should be imploded."
7. No Accounting for Taste
"Subject: Crab Trap Restaurant. We enjoyed our experience at the Crap Trap. The food is very good with nice size portions and reasonable prices (especially for the shore). The only down side is the wait."
8. A Sore for Sight Eyes
"Food not special, and the couple that lives there with their dog is very 'homey' and 'folksy' types. Not for everyone. The premises are well kept, but some private parts we could see thru open door were not."
9. Leave It to Beaver
"Imagine awakening at 4:00 am to the sound of loud footsteps in the stairwell, only to realize that someone is drunk and knocking on your hotel door saying, 'Beaver...it's me. Let me in, Beaver.'"
10. The Last Laugh
"In fact, I told the management there that I was putting a review on your website about their poor service and they laughed at me and said go right ahead, nobody reads the TripAdvisor site."

How about you? What inanities have you noticed on the site? And do you find it useful, or are you (like me) sometimes flummoxed by the wide disparity in opinions, and come away more confused than when you started?

It's easy to check whether reviews are fake or not by clicking to see whether that reviewer has written anything else. A glowing review from a one-shot poster, standing out in a sea of complaints? Dead giveaway: it's a fake.

As long as you're willing to check on that, and to discount the more predictable reviews, like the one from a couple in the rural US complaining that their hotel room in Paris was too small, TripAdvisor can be invaluable.

No one reads TripAdvisor? What are those people thinking?

There really are some entertaining reviews on that site. I always check it before booking hotels, and I haven't been let down yet.

I love reading TripAdvisor!!! but I always take negative reviews with a grain of salt, if the rest of the ones are good. If I am already familiar with the specific place, sometimes they are even more interesting. But, if all of the reviews are negative, I usually heed and stay away. I will say, that it is amazing how many people post things on-line without any kind of a proof read. I know that I am not the greatest grammarian. But I do read enough, to know when something doesn't "look" right.

I find TripAdvisor to be an invaluable tool when planning a trip and I generally get helpful information to questions I post. (If you read a section often enough, you will soon learn who actually knows enough about a place to give helpful info.)
And, yes, people sure do read TripAdvisor. Last summer I posted a highly favorable review of a small, family-run accomodation in a seldom-visited part of South Africa. I received a nice e-mail from the owner thanking me because she got some visitors who said they had read my review and came to stay based on what I had said.

Yes, I too find the information on Trip Adviser invaluable. I always check it before I plan any trip. I find the reviews are always helpful and I've learned to also take the negatives with a grain of salt. In fact, I always post a review of the place I've visited upon my return.

Yes, I use TripAdvisor, and not just for hotels. Their site reviews for cities are quite helpful ... as long as you disregard the unnecessary condescending, smarmy comments from csdiego.
