Labor Day Travel Tips

If you're planning to travel in or out of Washington's National Airport (DCA) this coming long weekend, take heed: There will be major disruptions in Metro service between Braddock Road and the National Airport station, from 9 p.m. Friday until 4 a.m. Tuesday.
Getting to National from any point on the Blue line between Largo and the airport shouldn't be a problem, and neither will Greenbelt-airport trips on the Yellow line. But travelers going to the airport from Franconia-Springfield or Van Dorn on the Blue Line, Huntington or Eisenhower on the Yellow line, or King Street or Braddock Road on either the Blue or Yellow lines will have to take a shuttle bus to the airport from Braddock Road. The disruptions should add about 30 minutes of extra travel time this coming weekend.
For more information, be sure to check out Metro's holiday transit schedule.
And if you're planning to join the ranks of drivers hitting the road, taking advantage of under-$4-a-gallon gas prices, scan The Post's traffic page before you get in the car.
Anyone else have tips or alerts for Labor Day vacationers?

If you are traveling north trying to get around the Bay Bridge fiasco and want to take rt 1 in Delaware, here is a tip:
If you take I 95 North, exit in Elkton, MD before the toll. Take Rt 279 toward Delaware
279 will turn into Route 2 once in Delaware. Follow Rt 2 to Rt 896 Make a right onto 896 and then a left onto Rt 40. Follow Rt 40 and you will see a sign for Rt 1 south. If you see Texas Roadhouse restaurant you have gone too far.
Also, if you do not want to follow Rt 2 all the way to 896.
Once in Delware (from MD 279). Make a right turn onto Otis Chapel Rd and follow this all the way to Rt. 40 and make a left onto 40 from there.
Good luck.

Thanks for the tips, Shoulder and Tommmy! It sounds like traffic on the Bay Bridge is horrific right now (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/08/28/AR2008082801945.html), so Tommmy's hint is particularly timely.

Not really a Labor Day Weekend tip, but, perhaps humerous.
I was in Dayton this week on business. Wednesday I arrived at Dayton Airport at about 8:30 AM for the flight back to IAD. Dayton, to say the least, is not exactly a hotbed of airline activity.
Two TSA lines were open. There were three people on each line when I arrived. Maybe four more showed up before I was through security.
I put my carryon into the x-ray and walked through the metal detector. I saw the lady on the monitor peering at my bag. "Bag check" she said.
Another lady came over, picked up the bag and asked that I follow her. She opened it and started pawing through my dirty clothes. I asked what she was looking for - "something" she said. No kidding.
She opened my kit bag and took out my tube of Colgate toothpaste - it was 3/4 empty and looked it. "This isn't allowed" she said. "Toothpaste?" I asked, "No," she said, "this size tube." I said to her that it was 3/4 empty. "No matter," she said, "it is the size of the tube" and she pointed to the weight number.
I shrugged - and she tossed it into the bin.
Sleep securely tonight. Your TSA is awake and alert.
