News Round-Up: Baggage Restrictions, Air Travel With Kids and More

Christina Talcott

What's going on in travel news this week? Here's an abbreviated list of some hot (and/or funny, helpful, etc.) stories:

* Starting Nov. 1, Continental's making it harder to over-pack your carry-on with new size restrictions. Like most airlines these days, Continental's mandating that carry-on bags' dimensions measure no more than 45 inches (roughy 9″ by 14″ by 22″).

* From the Airfare Watchdog blog: Tips on air travel with kids. Parents, take note. Please!

* Thanks to Upgrade for alerting me to a terrific account of one frequent flier's attempts to arouse the suspicions of TSA agents. Give it a read.

* Does anyone remember the story I wrote on a food safari through New York City? That's ok; I do. Today's Food section points out that one of the shops I visited in Little Italy now sells its imported cheeses and meats online.

* On Sunday, Gene Weingarten offered his $.02 about how airlines can cut costs. I like the idea of playing "Beverage Cart Pilot."

* Frustrated by fuel surcharges even though jet fuel costs have decreased? So is Senator Robert Menendez (D-NJ), who made waves earlier this week with a letter to airline CEOs imploring them to man up and roll back their fuel surcharges like several foreign carriers have done.

That Atlantic article is really excellent, and I hope TSA is paying attention.

It would be great if the crackdown on the size of carryons actually included, you know, measuring the carryons before people took them on the plane and making them check them if they are too big.
