Savings for Students

Christina Talcott

College students seem to develop a knack for the cheap and the free, but if you or yours hasn't yet discovered STA Travel and Student Universe, go there before booking that trip home for the holidays.

Both companies have been around for a while, starting out as bricks-and-mortar travel agencies, and are now primarily online booking sites. The difference? These sites are restricted to university students and professors, with STA catering to teachers of any kind and young travelers age 12 to 25, regardless of school enrollment.
STA Travel's an old hand at student deals, and it's still selling those International Student ID Cards students can use to snag bargains on hostels, Amtrak, Macy's and more. Student Universe, on the other hand, is geared only to students and faculty at accredited universities. Its Web site just launched a new flexible-flight matrix to find the cheapest combination of dates for plane tickets.

These two sites aren't always the answer to the cheapest travel - there are other options, like Airtran's $69-$99 stand-by fares for ages 18-22 only, and carriers like Southwest and Continental don't display their flights on either of the student sites -- but they're two more tools college students can use to get the next big bargain.

I'm pretty sure Southwest still offers this deal for students (18-23):

"Get 4 Bonus Credits enrolling in Rapid Rewards. Then all you have to do is fly 3 roundtrips purchased at southwest.com (4 credits for each roundtrip) in the next 24 months, and you'll automatically qualify for 1 free roundtrip."

It's not savings up front, but I got a free flight out of it, so I was happy!
