It Came From the Chat: Election Day Travel Tales

Christina Talcott

Happy Election Day, everyone! Did you get a chance to vote yet? Is anyone else glad that this campaign is finally ending?

In our regular online chat yesterday, host Scott Vogel wrote, "Tell us about a time when you witnessed the electoral process in another country." We got tons of responses; here are a few that didn't make it into the chat:

Alexandria, VA: Not an election exactly, but I was in Ireland in April 1998 when a peace deal was reached between Northern Ireland and the Republic. My sister and I were staying in bed and breakfasts and I remember the woman who owned the one we were at was really, really sad because it looked like it wasnt going to happen.

When we woke up the next AM, she brought us breakfast basically dancing and singing because she was so excited the deal had been signed.

Election in Russia: I hope I'm not too late! I was in Russia for their presidential election in May. Since it was pretty clear who would win, it took a long time to find someone who had actually voted. They didn't see the point. At least we've got suspense going for us. We've got more enthusiastic voters. However, their campaign is limited to 6-8 weeks I think. I always wish we would somehow limit our campaign in the U.S. Seems like it goes on forever!

Oxford, UK: I'm an American living in the UK, I have had 4 Obama campaign buttons picked off my bag (on separate occasions) in France and here in London in the past few weeks.

Better than taking my wallet, I guess!

Anyone have their own foreign election-related stories to contribute?
