Celebrate These 2009 Anniversaries

Christina Talcott

Today I came across a list on SmarterTravel.com of the big anniversaries in 2009. Among them are the 500th anniversary of Henry VIII's ascension to the throne and Baltimore's celebration of Edgar Allan Poe's 200th birthday.

The one that really stuck out for me, though, is this one: Nov. 9-10 is the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. Germany and much of Eastern Europe will be celebrating 20 years since the fall of communism. Sounds like a good excuse to visit to me!

Baltimore's not the only nearby place having a big year -- St. Mary's County celebrates the 375th anniversary of the settlers landing at St. Clement's Island, the founding of Maryland.

Anyone know of any other anniversaries coming up this year, whether abroad or close to home?

2009 marks 50 years since Alaska and Hawaii became states. Either one strikes me as a good place to travel to mark the occasion.
