Obama's Welcome Party, Travelers' Nightmares

Well, we just barely made it through the inauguration, with the biggest crowds the city may have ever seen, especially on the Mall. The Post has been aggressively pursuing the story of the thousands of ticketholders who were denied access to the Mall, as well as what went wrong at the airports and train stations, causing another untold number of people to miss their flights and trains home. My friends who flew out of BWI yesterday on AirTran reported having no problems, but they were lucky.
Did any of you out there experience problems leaving the DC area after the inauguration? If not, how did you avoid getting caught up in the crowds?

Hi! This isn't exactly relevant to anything... but I suddenly have free from Tuesday Jan 27 to Monday Feb 16 and would like to leave the U.S. On a budget, but willing to spend on the important things (i.e. getting there)... would like to be in a place where most of the activities/ food are low budget and hostelling is reasonably good and safe and public transport and my feet/ a kayak can get me where I need to go. Otherwise I'm totally open. Where would you go?
