Lakisha Jones has won "American Idol" 6. Hooray!
Oh wait -- you say there are three more months of this?
But seriously, even judge Simon Cowell thought she won. His exact words to the show's other 23 contestants about Lakisha's performance were: "I am very tempted to say to 23 people, 'Book your plane tickets home'...That was in a different league to anything I've heard."
Lakisha blew away the competition singing "And I Am Telling You, I'm Not Going" which, show host Ryan Seacrest noted, was performed by former "Idol" contestant Jennifer Hudson in the flick "Dreamgirls" for which she is about to win an Academy Award.
These days, "American Idol" is trying as hard to grab on to Hudson's coattails as she is trying to pry "Idol" off of them. Hudson was an early exiter in the "Idol" competition -- one of the franchise's least proud moments.
Lakisha and the other 11 chicks all sang one night. This year's 12 guy contestants sang the night before.
And while Lakisha was in a league all her own, five other women delivered strong performances: Stephanie Edwards, Jordin Sparks, Melinda Doolittle, and Gina Glocksen. The other six, not so much.
The guys, they should tuck their tails between their legs and slink off into the night. The producers even think so, they had show host Ryan Seacrest ask judge Randy Jackson, at the end of Chick Night, how many men he'd put through to the final 12 if producers tossed out the whole six guys-six chicks format.
Which, by the way, totally has to go this season.
Anyway, Randy said he'd keep just four guys "because the girls blew it out of the box tonight!"
He was being kind. To the guys.
Seacrest had asked judge Paula Abdul a similar question at the top of the show. What he said was something along the lines of "After sleeping on it, how do you look at the guys?"
It was a really unfortunate choice of words. But his point was well taken and the three judges agreed the guys were bad.
It was a theme to which they returned over and over as the chicks performed:
"You were a million times better than any performance we saw last night," Simon told Stephanie Edwards after she belted out "How Come You Don't Call Me."
"America - we finally gout ourselves a Season 6 competition!" Randy enthused after Sabrina Sloan delivered "Never Loved A Man The Way That I Love You."
The three judges also loved Jordin Sparks, backup singer Melinda Doolittle and, to a lesser degree, Gina Glockson.
As for the rest of the female contestants, Simon, as usual, was "spot on":
Amy Krebs was entirely forgettable, right down to her hair and her dress.
Leslie Hunt sang like a dog walker on stage -- out of her comfort zone.
Antonella Barba picked a song that ate her up -- like Ryan Seacrest trying to be an evening news anchor.
Haley Scarnato sounded 40. Alaina Alexander's performance was a mess and if she makes it to next week it will be because she's pretty, slender and blonde.
But Simon really pulled out the thesaurus to describe Nicole Tranquillo's desperate performance of Chaka Khan's "Stay": indulgent, aggressive, unnatural looking, fake, and overrehearsed.
