Ted Koppel, Again a Conventional Thinker

Former ABC News "grand dame" Ted Koppel appeared at the press tour via satellite to discuss the news that he'd been named a contributor to BBC America's "BBC World News America" just in time for the Democratic and Republican national conventions.

One critic remembered that it wasn't long ago when Koppel said conventions weren't so important these days. "Have you changed your mind on that at all?" he was asked. "I did more than express an opinion on that," Koppel responded. " In 1996, I walked out of the Republican convention in San Diego, pointing out that it was really nothing more than a picture show and there wasn't any news happening," he said. Although it's already clear who the two parties' candidates will be this year, Koppel insists this year's conventions will not be the infomercials he accused the GOP convention of being in '96, when he famously packed "Nightline's" bags and left after two days. Apparently he'd gone into the confab thinking that news was going to be made there. How cute is that?
