CBS Employee Arrested in Letterman Extortion Attempt

An employee of the CBS News program "48 Hours" was arrested Thursday and charged with attempting to blackmail CBS late night host David Letterman about sexual relations Letterman had with female employees of his "Late Show," CBS and Letterman revealed Thursday.

Letterman had surprised his studio audience when, coming back from commercial break after his opening monologue, he started telling them "a story" about having been the victim of a recent extortion attempt.

Dave told his somewhat baffled crowd -- after all, they thought they'd come to see a comedy show -- that three weeks ago he had gotten into his car at 6 in the morning and discovered a package containing a letter from a man who threatened to write a screenplay about ""everything terrible thing you've ever done in your life."

But his audience's surprise was nothing compared to what The Reporters Who Cover Television were in for when they opened up an email CBS sent immediately after Letterman had finished walking his audience through the whole sordid story.

The e-mail contained the following message from CBS:

"CBS was made aware of an ongoing police investigation involving David Letterman and an employee at '48 Hours,' who was subsequently arrested earlier today on charges of attempted grand larceny in the first degree. CBS is cooperating fully with the authorities and the employee has been suspended pending the results of the investigation."

Neither CBS nor Letterman named the employee under arrest. But Letterman admitted to the audience attending the taping of his late night show in New York City that when he saw the package in his car, "I go through it and study it."

"This is a guy that's going to write a screenplay about me -- and that's good news for anyone," Letterman jokes to his studio audience -- and viewers at home who saw it later when it was broadcast nationally.

"He's going to take all the terrible stuff he knows about my life....and he's going to put it into a movie unless I give him some money."

Dave's studio audience guffaws.

"I want to reiterate how terrifying this is...I'm motivated by nothing but guilt -- I'm a towering mass of Lutheran Midwestern guilt," Dave continues.

The crowd applauds its approval.

Letterman says he then called his attorney and the two of them set up a meeting with the would-be extortionist -- at which the guy reiterates he wants a large sum money or he will write the screenplay -- after which Dave and his attorney head to the Manhattan district attorney's office.

"They say 'Hello! This is blackmail!'."

The DA's office advises them to set up yet another meeting to make sure the guy wasn't just having a "bad day," Letterman explains.

At that meeting, the man says, "not only am I writing a screenplay -- I'm writing a book!'," according to Dave.

"It's all coming up roses for me," he adds.

It is now officially the most riveting late -night riff in the history of television.

At yet another meeting, a phony check is issued, at the direction of the DA's office. But it doesn't end there.

"I had to go downtown and testify before a grand jury...I had to tell them all of the creepy things I had done," Dave mourns.

Audience giggles.

"Well now why is that funny?" he pretends to wonder.

Audience applauds wildly as Dave tells about the man's arrest that afternoon.

"Now of course we get to what was all the 'creepy' stuff," Dave continues.

Audience titters.

"And the creepy stuff was I have had sex with women who work for me on this show."

"Now my response to that is 'yes I have'."

Audience erupts in laughter.

"I have had sex with women who work on this show."

Thunderous applause.

"And would it be embarrassing if were made public? Perhaps it would.

"Especially for the women."

Letterman told America Thursday night he acted as he had because he felt a need to protect the women involved and his own family, adding, "I need to protect myself -- and I hope to protect my job."

Letterman and his longtime girlfriend Regina Lasko, married in March; their son, Harry, was born in November of 2003.

Sounds like they had some pretty sleazy dirt on Letterman, which is no surprise to anybody what with him making sleazy jokes about Sarah Palin's daughter. But you know what? We don't lock up people for being sleazy -- we lock them up for being criminals like blackmailers, murderers, thieves, and Roman Polanski. So on balance, I give Dave props for sucking it up and suffering the shame in order to catch an actual criminal.

(Ok, I was kidding about the "Letterman suffering shame" part...)

Wouldn't it be really funny if Dave Letterman knocked up his interns during the seventh inning stretch of the Yankees game? A few months ago it was funny when Dave fantasized about Sarah Palin's 16 year old daughter doing it, but now Dave can do it live! How old were the interns -- 17, 15, or 13?

I don't think we know enough about what happened to pass judgement. At worst it seems he was having consensual sex while he may have been single. Big Deal! Contrast that to other sex scandals... Clinton, Vitter, Foley, Craig, Haggard, Sanford, et al.

Bravo for David. Extortionists are thieves and to some degree like psychopaths who have no conscience when it comes to large sums of money, for example, $2,000,000.00. People like this need to be placed in jail and fined heavily. Dave's sex life is his business and his business only.

Well I guess it better to be a VICTIM of Extortion than being accused of Sexual Harrasement by lower level employees.

That Letterman is a pervert was first apparent when he talked about raping Palin's minor daughter. So how many has Letterman molested? Is it not a corporate crime to have sex with employees who have worked for him? Has he granted them favors? Where is CBS's ethics? This will cost CBS credibility issues similar to Dan Rather.

To all you moralisitc, holier than thou, finger pointing people, get a life. It was apparently consensual sex among adults, probably while he was unmarried. Jeesh, give it a rest already. You just could not wait to be among the first to point fingers. Well, as the trite but true saying goes, when you point one, you have three looking back at you. I am not usually this angry, so forgive me, but I grow weary of criticism that lacks any substance beyond sanctimonious cheap shots.

"...the crime of issuing a false check..."

Read the post again, more carefully this time. Letterman committed no crime by issuing a false check. To wit:
"[T]he Manhattan district attorney's office [ ] told him to issue a 'phony' $2 million check to the person, in a ruse that led to the person's arrest Thursday."

Posted by: Nosy_Parker | October 2, 2009 12:04 AM | Report abuse

Boy Lisa Bloom is a Harpie. She begins her analysis by accusing Letterman of Sexual Harrassment. With no facts available, it is inconceivable to her that adults might have consensual sex. She wants to indict a cooperative victim for his participation in a police investigation. Wow, Lisa where did you get your man hating ways??? I have heard them over and over. Maybe your gay lifestyle doesn’t accept that a man and a woman might actually want to have sex with each other, but for most of us it is an accepted fact. Dont make my heterosexual lifestyle the subject of your legal and commenting scorn

whats the matter with you people.
Mr. Letterman just admitted that he had sex with a subordinate. In every other organization thats called sexual harassment, not to mention just plain immoral. Have we as a society lost all sense of decency? This man should be fired because of his actions. There is no in between, no funny stuff, no its ok. How can we as a society survive if we continue to just ignore this kind of behavior. Are we to just give in to anarchy? If thats what is to come its funny how little most understand of what that really means.

Lost in this thread is the impropriety of having sex with his subordinates, which is another serious aspect of this affair and which negates the argument that this is just a case of sex between consenting adults.

Posted by: rsk6 | October 2, 2009 12:12 AM | Report abuse

This sounds like trouble to me. Having sex with multiple employees? How many? Did they feel coerced because he is their boss? CBS needs to look at this very carefully.

Posted by: remorse | October 2, 2009 12:12 AM | Report abuse

I just watched the show. The audience seemed pretty baffled- a lot of them seemed to think it was a comedy routine and laughed throughout, then applauded at the end. He didn't give any specifics other than the basic fact that he admitted having had sex with several women he worked with. I guess more of the story will come out eventually. Bottom line- those who hate him will continue to do so, and those who don't will wait and see.

It is not a crime to cheat on your wife repeatedly and have sex with your employees. They are highly immoral and unethical, but not illegal.

It's also not illegal to get pregnant when you are a teen either. Didn't stop Letterman and the rest of the hateful partisans like yourself from going after her.

Spare us the hypocrisy. As always, liberals can dish it out all day long, but can't take it.

Kind of like we had eight years of calls for Bush's death and Nazi comparisons, but now you all are outraged over the far less outrageous attacks on your guy.

Posted by: morphex | October 2, 2009 12:17 AM | Report abuse

Pi, I believe the legal criteria by which sex with a subordinate (or any other co-worker) becomes illegal is in a civil lawsuit:
a. when there's an explicit or clearly implied trade-off (i.e., a quid pro quo) either in terms of gain for submitting or harm for refusing; or,
b. if the victim can prove by a preponderance of the evidence that a reasonable person would perceive that the circumstances created a hostile work environment.

In other words, not every sex between two people in the workplace is automatically illegal. To be sure, skeevy sometimes, but not necessarily against the law.

Anyway most of us understand that a Leftist claiming others are hatemongers is a psychological condition called "projection."

That is hoisting one's internalization onto others as a means of defense. Classic Leftist behavior. It is a mental illness.

OK Dave, now that you were pretty much forced to fess up, was the sex you had with your staff with the female members or the male members...your wife would like to know.

Dave come on and fess up big time. Were you playing around with Paul's organ?

"Will you Palintards shut up already? I wasn't aware that it was some kind of crime to have consensual relationships with adult co-workers."

Oh, but it is in the Land of the Bronze Age Lost. It is a SIN, and the Lord hath commanded stoning to death for it - in the same public square where the stubborn and obstinate children are stoned to death by their crazy Old Testament-controlled parents. The Palintards know this, though they try really hard to pretend they don't know about the second part (which is laid out clearly in Deuteronomy 21:18-21, if anyone cares).

Or am I wrong and you all ARE stoning your misbehaving kids to death like good Bronze Age Lost folks?

If all you people think that is was alright for Dave to do what he did, then why did he go to the authorities about the person that wanted money? If it was a normal action, just tell the person wanting money to go to hell. But no, he had to make it a story and I'll bet he thinks it will improve his image to his followers. One thing he had better be careful of, don't make fun of anyone with the same situations. We can all rest assured that he is a very liberal democrat.

Let's see here...a CBS producer for "48 Hours" gets popped and locked for a $2 million extortion scheme. Put aside the substance and essence of the Letterman activities for just a moment. This CBS producer worked for a television broadcast that has glorified each and every law enforcement agency in the country as the leading part of the show's identity. How can one of their Emmy Award winning producers be so ignorant of law enforcement methods and so stupid in his choices to attempt allegedly to ease out of his financial distress in this manner?

I nearly forgot the BEST part...the producer actually accepted a check for the $2 million shakedown...from strangers. Absolutely priceless!

I only wonder what CBS's news gathering and reporting stance would be if a Dateline NBC staffer had attempted something similar with Jay Leno or Conan O'Brien.

Letterman is a scumbag of low moral fiber, and probably did a threesome.

What's wrong with that?

In France, this wouldn't have even been blackmailable.

Americans have the mentality of 8-year-olds when it comes to all things sexual.

Last I heard," Family Values" Palin is contemplating running for Prez and Letterman is not.

Maybe the Enquirer, which exposed John Edwards for the cad he is, will decide to run their story on the alleged affairs of Todd and Sarah now, especially if she is foolish enough (and she is, imo) to join the fray.

Also and ya betcha.

Palin is a breeder of wh0res and retards. And she's supported by much worse.

He knew this, and more to come, would all come out when he pulled the trigger on the involving the law. I don't buy the 'bravo's on him coming clean at this point nor in theory that an all powerful boss/icon can be having totally uncomplicated sex with his underlings (& probably his literal employees). Though in his case I would guess it is more likely these women were "star bonkers" - women looking for the attention and intimacy with someone famous a "star".

Having said that, he is a comedian who has made fun of everyone -it is his job and why people watch they want him to lampoon the powerful. It is Palin who decided to elevate it for political purposes and to stir up her folks and mask issues relating to her poor performance and inadequacies on the national stage. it worked and, clearly, continues to work.

PSmack1 I think that is over the line

Sorry, Dave!

Sex between a superior and a subordinate is harassment because of the difference in power between them. It creates a hostile workplace situation for those who choose not to consort with the boss.

He is a super hypocrite. He is really creepy.

He should be fired for sleeping with his employee. Now the network can show all the jokes he made at the expense of others and then replay his admission.

Now everyone in the ShowBiz please come out of the closet.

so a sleaze bag tries to extort a guy who acted un ethically at worst. it happens to be a celebrity who like the rest of humanity makes fun of things all the time. only difference is he is rich and famous. dave broke no criminal laws as i can see.

Posted by: dave86 | October 2, 2009 12:18 PM | Report abuse

The difference between Letterman's situation and the people he makes fun of (which is his job) is that he is not an elected official. He is not someone who campaigns on a platform of protecting America's families. And he didn't cover it up, didn't deny it. He didn't claim to be hiking the Appalachian Trail.

When Republicans talk about the crumbling morality of modern America and then get exposed having an affair, that is hypocrisy (same for Dems, except they don't usually prop themselves up as moral leadears).

When Dave makes jokes about that hypocrisy, he is doing his job -- being a comedian.

Whether or not he was slimy in his relationships has yet to come out -- so far, there has been no accusations of harrasment. The timing of these relationships is also undisclosed -- we do not know if this is current or old "dirt".

Really, the only person who deserves to have an opinion on this is his long-time girlfriend, now wife.

Speaking of roles and treatment of different categories of people, it will be interesting to see/hear how Jay, Conan, Colbert, et al handle this affair on their shows since, after all, it's their job to make fun of things, as well....

When Letterman fessed to his gaffe
He meant to elicit no laugh;
But his heart is diseased
So he has to be pleased
To rouse an obedient staff.

‘cause his shot at Palin was cheap.
Maybe his help could take
A break from his snake
He could do his thing with the sheep.

Letterman, considering the situation, is VERY smart. He called the guy's bluff as tough as that may have been. He didn't try to worm out of it. And he confessed to his audience, who loved it. His wife has no illusions about him, he has always been who he's always been. JUST WATCH THE RATINGS TONIGHT! Conan and Kimmel may as well not show up.

Can't wait to see "48 hours" episode about their producer (Joe Halderman) throwing a tantrum because his girlfriend (Stephanie Birkitt, who happened to sleep with David Letterman in the past, dumped him.

"48 hours" crime story producer Halderman, who is getting financially keel hauled by his estranged wife decides to try to blackmail Letterman, gets "stung" and gets indicted.

Letterman cops to the fact he did not keep his John Thomas in his "World Pide Pants" on national TV and sees his ratings go up 22 percent.

Halderman gets arrested with bail set at $200,000.

Meanwhile, back at the ranch everyone is yammering about Letterman being the criminal!!!

Love Dave or hate him, he sure delivers the entertainment.

As I read the comments attached to this blog, they made me sick.
Is this an example of the values people carry throughout the country?
If so, our jury system is a lost cause for justice.
People who make judgments about a subject requiring some notion of justice on the basis of the kinds of political partisanship expressed on this blog don't deserve their citizenship.
They don't deserve to drive on our highways, eat at our tables, sleep under our skies.
Their sense of judgment is so corrupted, they are incompetent to serve as citizens of a free America.
David Letterman was the victim of a serious crime.
He did everything right.
He contacted his attorney; they sought help from the police.
He not only was completely honest with his attorney, they were honest with the police (which means he was honest with his family).
He participated in the sting (which took a lot of courage).
He then went public with the complete story, so that this information can never be used against him by anyone else.
Some on this board might vote Mr. Halderman "not guilty" by reason of some remarks Letterman made about Sarah Palin and her daughter.
Not that this serious crime had any connection with that breach in civility.
Where is justice?
In very few comments on this board.
What a shame for America.
My husband is a high-school teacher; these stalwart souls are bucking the winds across the country.
There is little or no desire for true education; the development of that quality of independent thought.
There is only slavish subserviance to group-think.
Most don't even know their minds have been captured and their thoughts are no longer their own.
America itself and the freedom and justice it stands for are crumbling away.
