Oprah to plug Palin book and maybe placate conservatives

Oprah Winfrey, on a campaign to climb back from last season's ratings slump, will attempt to kiss and make up with conservative viewers on Nov. 16 when she has Sarah Palin on her syndicated talk show.

You may have noticed that the appearance by the former Alaska governor and Republican vice presidential candidate is happening smack dab in the middle of the November ratings derby.
It's also the day before Palin's new book, "Going Rogue: An American Life" is scheduled to hit bookstores.

Oprah's Winfrey's production company, Harpo Productions, claims it will be Palin's first interview about the book. We'll see about that.

More importantly, Harpo also claims it will be the first time Oprah Winfrey will have met and Palin will have met, and Harpo should know.

It's not just another show booking for Oprah Winfrey. She's going whole hog this season to try to recover from the ratings tumble she took last season when her audience slid to under 7 million viewers. And, during one awful week in July, "The Oprah Winfrey Show" suffered its smallest ratings since its debut way back in 1985.

Industry navel gazers speculated Oprah had turned off some of her conservative viewers -- or, more accurately, they had turned her off -- when she not only endorsed then presidential candidate Barack Obama but even campaigned for him. (Palin, of course, was the running mate of Obama's rival, Sen. John McCain.)

It was the first time Oprah had stripped off her apolitical veneer and publicly endorsed a political candidate. At the time, Oprah told CNN's Larry King she did it because "what [Obama] stands for" was "worth me going out on a limb for."

And her ratings took a tumble, though hers was not the only syndicated show to lose audience last season and she still managed to wind up at the top of the syndication heap at season's end.
Even so, Oprah has largely abandoned her whole aspirational programming mantra this season and gone in for the more purely commercial.

That has translated into the longest-two-day-interview-ever with Whitney Houston to kick off Houston's latest comeback attempt; Oprah's first visit with Dr. Phil in seven years; and an episode in which everyone had to dress up like the characters on "Mad Men" -- a show hardly anyone watches but which gets gobs of attention from drooling press, which meant gobs of free publicity for Oprah.

Also filed under Ratings are Everything This Season: Oprah's deliciously detailed interview with Erin Andrews, the ESPN reporter who was unknowingly videotaped nude in a hotel room by some stalker guy; and her highly touted, things-could-get rough, face-to-face meeting between former world champion boxers Mike Tyson and Evander Holyfield -- their first meeting since Tyson bit off part of Holyfield's ear and got disqualified during a 1997 WBA heavyweight title fight.
And now, add to that list Palin, whose book was No. 2 on Amazon.com's bestseller list Tuesday afternoon.

Meanwhile, "Say You're One of Them," a collection of short stories by Nigerian Uwem Akpan -- Oprah's latest book club selection -- was ranked No. 84.

We rest our case.

Fat chance, Oprah. Or, am I being redundant?

So let's see if I've got this right. Oprah needs Palin so she can "win back her conservative viewers."? One question; Are there pretty rainbow-colored ponies in the land where you live? Don't get me wrong. Fantasy can be fun. It's just more convincing when you stay on the same planet. Oprah "needs" the ex-Gov, as much as she needs your slanted rag. (Fun try though.)

"Placate conservatives?" Are you kidding? The only thing that will placate conservatives is going to be another tax cut for the wealthy, massive cuts to government infrastructure and some other dictator to crush at any cost. Get real. Nothing will placate these people and every waffling liberal had best get used to it for ONCE.

If conservatives fall in line with Oprah they will show that they are just as ignorant as liberals about important, long term issues facing the country.

Is it just me or is it every issue of Oprah magazine have Oprah on the cover? Oprah, put someone else on your cover besides yourself. Even me, an Obama supporter was turned off by her campaigning for Obama. About Palin, I hope Oprah can control herself when Palin starts trashing Obama.

The "naval gazers" got it all wrong. The problem wasn't that Oprah was going against a conservative grain by supporting Obama. The problem was that Oprah - the woman who has made her WHOLE career based on the empowerment of women - chose to not endorse ANY woman, from ANY party during a historical election that included two of them. Good luck Oprah...you might win some of the conservative women back by your lasted calculated ploy but the Democractic women, I'm guessing, are going to remained feeling quite betrayed!

Well we know 3 things about Oprah
#1 She supports terrible terrible candidates
#2 No one watches her anymore after Obamaland Obamanomics
#3 At least she has decided to go American this time.

There is such a huge conservative backlash because of Obama's pathetic performance as President that even Oprah is having to go out of her way to appeal to the conservative majority.

While I don't appreciate the "celebrities" who think their opinions about issues are more important or better than mine, I left Oprah because of her "god" complex. She had moved entirely too far away from my values and principles long before she decided to endorse and campaign for Obama.

I am neither Democrat or Republican, I am as independent as they come, so my politics have nothing to do with any of this. But if she is going to give so much time and money to one side of the house, then it's only fair, don't you think, she give a smidgen of time to the other side as well.

Even Oprah has figured out the Obama Magic had a shelf life. The only place Obama scores well is in rediculously skewed Washington Post Polls.

The Post has your back Obama!

Well, I think we should all hold our judgment about this until we hear what kinds of things Oprah wants to talk about.

Maybe Sarah Palin will come down off her high horse a little and act nice instead of shrew-like. (Don't hold your breath.)

Maybe Oprah will ask some tough questions about Sarah's angry, racist rallies last year on the campaign trail.

Sarah Palin? EWWW. It has been so nice the past week or so without Sarah Palin in the news anywhere. We don't WANT to watch her on Oprah, but you know we will.

It is time to give someone else a chance for your cover. We all know you are georgeous, smart, rich and talented, but there are lot of other people like you out there too. How about a Miss or Mr or Mrs nobody? and as far as having Ms Palin on your show and you plugging her book, Ifor one will not be watching that show............

The interview is an attempt to increase viewers as OPI is not doing so good. Her ratings have tanked and that's why she reached out to Sarah Palin.

Ms, Winfrey has a preternatural "talent" for self promotion. Somehow she maintains the facade of empathy and social concern. She traffics rarefied circles like literacy and politics, but they only serve to self aggrandize her and her cabal of handlers. Mr. Obama was an early lapdog and acolyte amid the Chicago negro bourgeoisie along with Valerie Jarrett. She has of late developed an intense reaction formation to the poverty and injustice she natters about. Remember the lapses in judgement and cognition with respect to her "school" in S. Africa (a boost to her flagging negritude) and the James Fry imbroglio.

I never thought I'd see the day that Oprah would need to form a symbiotic relationship with the likes of Sarah Palin. Good grief. Could it be that maybe the O show has just run its course? It has nothing to do with Obama or conservatives and everything to do with the viewers are ready for something different? I think it jumped the shark when Tom Cruise jumped on the couch.

Some comparisons: Palin believes Bibically that Jesus is the only way to heaven. Jesus said so (Jn 14:6 "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me."). Occult Oprah & her pal Obama believe in many paths to heaven. This is anti-Bible & anti-Christ & anti-Gospel. Oprah talks to occult channelers on her show & even talked to the occult channeling spirits inside a channeler on her radio program. Obama keeps occult good luck charms in his pocket. Occult channeling (evil) spirits love Obama. Palin is pro-Israel (used to have an Israeli flag in her office). Obama & Oprah, who are Afrocentric (the dark continent), could care less about Israel. Lastly, Palin stays fit & trim while Oprah is almost always obese.

Posted by: techsavvy777 | October 20, 2009 9:12 PM | Report abuse

I think many of the viewers are gone for good. She greatly damaged her brand by going whole-hog to get Obama elected. She should've remembered the adage that one doesn't speak publically about religion or politics.

Barack should've given her a cabinet position as pay-back for her efforts because she is now paying a high price for her efforts and it could get worse if more Americans conclude his election was a mistake.

Oprah is a businesswoman, and conservatives are complaining about that. I think it's a great challenge she's taking on. What is really mind boggling is the notion by right wingers that Obama is doing a terrible job. Many times they mention the stimulus package. Don't you know that the stimulus package was initiated by Bush/Paulson as necessary and that Obamaand his advisors basically agreed, held their noses and did what was necessary. Was the economy rosy when he took office? I somehow recall projections of another great depression. Did this happen? Why not?

I KNEW that I would LOVE all the Palin Derangement Syndrome comments -once this was announced.
The libs are SO afraid of Sarah-
Yes- OFRAH is looking for ratings- but she will NOT regain any kind of Conservative base.
Conservatives will watch, because they love and agreee with Sarah Palin.
And if OFRAH is nasty to her - SHE will LOSE AGAIN!!!
It's a WIN WIN for Sarah.
OFRAH HAS to make nice and give Sarah a platform where she can speak and not be edited and ALINSKIED.
And any of you who are reading this and think Sarah Palin is stupid- you got your information from SNL, Jon Stewart, Stephan Colbert and the edited shows of Charlie Gibson and Katie Couric.

BEWARE- Sarah Palin has MUCH more going on than your failed Obama.

Placate Conservatives?
There is nothing O-pray Winfrey could do to placate conservatives, short of going off the air. Savvy people see through her, and know her for what she is; a huckster. The only person that O-pray is out to benefit, is O-pray. As far as Sarah Palin is concerned, whether she is promoting her book or not, she should tell Winfrey thanks, but no thanks. I recall the Big O did everything in her power to disrespect Palin last year during the election, but I do recall she did her utmost to promote Barry Soetero. O-pray Winfrey is as phoney, as Borat Obongo.

Questions for Palin that Oprah ought to ask.

Why did you attend 5 Colleges in 6 Years resulting in a Broadcasting Degree? What other educational attainment can you account for or are you autodidactic? What do you read every day. You have had over a year since your Katie Couric interview to answer.

As mayor of Wasilla and as Governor why did you continue to charge rape victims for their rape kits? Why does Alaska have some of the highest rates of rape and incest in the U.S?

Why were you involved with the secessionist treasonist Alaskan Independence Party and attended their convention?

Why do you pal around with a terrorist of the same party who was murdered in 1993 during “a plastic explosives sale gone bad.” Your husband Todd Palin joined the same party two years later. Neither you nor Todd were 9 years old at the time.

Why did it occur to you not to obtain a passport. What knowledge did you gather from traveling outside U.S from your trade mission and a 2007 visit to troops in Germany. Can you really see Russia from outside window?

Do you still supports ineffective abstinence education programs even after your daughter gets knocked up?

Did Jesus really saddle up a dinosaur and ride it 6000 years ago?

Why do you decry "Socialism" when it comes to supporting a National Health Plan public option in order to lift burden off of small and mid-size businesses. While supporting Alaska National Fund payouts of roughly $1000 per year while in 2008 adding $1200 energy rebate?

It always amazes me that when conservative values aren't highlighted by a TV show, conservative viewers turn off and expect everyone else to as well. Yet, when conservative views are highlighted, conservatives are aghast at the fact that not everyone agrees.

It is disgusting that Oprah is willing to plug a book that conveys values she worked against a year ago, but that's capitalism. She wants the all-mighty dollar and that's the bottom line.

What is hypocritical is that Palin is part of the right-wing machine that dropped Oprah from its daily viewing, yet she is willing to reverse her opinion when it comes time to sell a book.

Both women should be ashamed of themselves for abandoning their values.

John Kerry was called a 'flip-flopper' for changing opinions based on new information. What do we call someone who changes their opinions for money?

We got our PROOF from Sarah Palin opening her MOUTH and babbling like an idiot on every televised program or any time she was asked a question that she wasn't told to memorize an answer. It appears this will be a big ratings boost for her, but it will only be one day, and then Oprah is back to barely remembered again.

The networks need a new breath of fresh air, not the bigot Oprah's weight story again. Just to keep an audience she has to give away bling and cars.

If Conan Obrien found a new agent ( Rahm's relative) , and could get a bite on Obama, I would watch him.
Until then, NO.
Raw TV requires no strings.

Entertainers need to understand that they need to entertain, and not get get caught up politics. This goes for Oprah and the rest of Holywoo-never-never-land.

And yes the back-lash has only just begun .....

Oh how I wish Sarah would not have taken the bait... :o(

"they had turned her (oprah) off -- when she not only endorsed then presidential candidate Barack Obama but even campaigned for him" You should have mentioned the dollars oprah threw at the compaign.

"what [Obama] stands for" was "worth me going out on a limb for." And her ratings took a tumble. Dah, it was because he was black.

Let get a few things straight

1.Oprah does need to appease anyone anymore. Oprah is one of the most infuencial people of our times. Oprah has had a long running popular talk show (I haven't watched in years), Owner of a cable station and magazine which has catapulted her into the Billionaire Club. Oprah does what she wants to do, NOT because she has to. Sarah on the other hand is an in need of money/publicity opportunist.

2.Regardless of how influential Oprah is, she is an business savvy entertainer first.

3. Should Oprah invest money in her hometown (Chicago), I would say yes. However, the bottom line is she can do whatever she wants with HER own money.

Not sure I would have Sarah on my show unless I was in desperate need of a laugh, which Sarah is always good for. Lord knows she will not have anything intelligent to say.

All about entertainment folks.

Oprah always said that she would be happy to have Sarah Palin on her show after the campaign was over; well, the campaign is over. By the way, Oprah is in show business and Palin has a book to promote, so everything seems to be quite normal to me. Both Palin and Oprah are free to do whatever they please and we can watch or not watch as we choose.

This makes lots of sense if Oprah values money over principles -- guess that's what's going on. Easy for us to criticize, but it's her life and if money is what drives it these days, she is hardly alone in this world.

Oprah is playing the FOX news card. She knows that "the ones" silver wings are tarnished. She also knows that conservative and moderate Americans greatly outnumber the libterards (conservatively challenged).

Yes the FOX card...viewer-ship that is more than all the Obama channels combined. She is a business woman first and wants a bigger slice of that good ol American pie.

We will get plenty of chances to see Sarah Palin without giving in to this pandering. Just because Oprah dangles a carrot in front of our noses doesn't mean we have to bite. Sarah will do fine without us having to stoop so low as to watch Oprah.

I used to respect Sarah Palin, but no longer. Appearing on the the Obama, I mean Oprah show says it all to me. Selling out for the almighty buck! To people that say she won't have anything intelligent to say, let me ask you this. You watch Oprah and you expect to hear someone say something intelligent? The claim that just because Oprah has money makes her the most influential person of our time, let me ask another question. Are sheep intelligent animals? Anyone that gets their news and opinions from Oprah and/or The View needs some serious help. You obviously have too much idle time on your hands, and are too lazy to educate yourself. Read a book (written by a respected author), watch the news (not MSNBC), and leave the Sheep mentality to those who can't think for themselves. Need an example? Look at the audiences that attend shows like Letterman. They laugh even when the man is confessing to having sex with his employees. He was not trying to be funny, and even said so! They applaud when un-American people like Bill Maher says that Americans are stupid, or when he praises the likes of Castro, Chavez, or communist China. Sad, REALLY REALLY SAD.

What I really don't understand is how in the world anyone can "plug" a book that they haven't even read yet. Unless she has an advance copy.

In which case, as a reviewer, I would want to know the identity of the ghost writer. Most authors say something nice about their editorial team somewhere between the covers. Or at least they should...

I dunno - it seems like much ado about nothing. Oprah's show is really about popular culture. The book is going to be huge, so it makes sense that she'd get Palin to be on the show. She's had plenty of people on whom she doesn't agree with. So yeah, of course it's for ratings, but that's kinda what the show is about. Heck, I might even watch it. I want to see if Oprah gives Palin the smackdown when something stupid falls out of the woman's mouth, like it always does.

Posted by: jrzwrld | October 21, 2009 2:05 PM | Report abuse

ANYTHING to sell a book, eh Palin? Look, Palin needs Oprah far more than Oprah needs the airheaded Palin. I'll watch the show for the sheer comedic value it offers.

As an Alaskan, I have a perspective on Palin that most of you don't, and let me tell you, she really IS as stupid as she came across in interviews, and as Tina Fey portrayed her. No kidding - the woman should have stayed in Anchorage sports broadcasting - she was a perfect fit there. But her narcissistic personality disorder carried her upward and onward.

When she became mayor of Wasilly (meth capital of the North), the town was small, but debt-free. She left it indebted to the tune of $20 million, thanks to the monument she built - to herself - in the form of an over-priced, over-budget hockey rink - cuz she's a hockey mom...

She left our state at a time of financial crisis, telling the world that we were on the verge of building a gasline - NOT! There's no hope on the horizon for that pipedream. She likes to call herself a rogue. We like to call her a joke.

For those of you complaining about Palin's ghostwriter and stating that she should put in an acknowledgement, I wonder why you aren't complaining about Ayer's not being acknowledged in Dreams?

As for Okra, I will not be watching. The cow turned her back on women during the primary and the election and pimped the Fraud. Her show is silly and pathetic and no guest will get me to watch, even somebody with as much stature as Sarah Palin.

Gossip, innuendo and rumor as news in an opinion piece.

Hey, President Obama, you need to "blackball" the Washington Post for running an opinion piece that claims your former best buddy Oprah has sold you out and agreed to do an interview with Sarah Palin.

You know 'that woman.' How dare the Washington Post! They are clearly not a real news organization, but are simply pushing an agenda. The rest of the media would be well advised not to follow their lead.

What a hoot. Worse, the premise behind this article is amusing, because it shows that the writer does not have a clue as to what is going in the public's mind.

The Democratic media establishment (which includes the Washington Post) lost all credibility with its over the top support for Obama during the last Presidential cycle.

Since then, the Democratic media establishment, including the Washington Post, has shown by its actions, that by and large it is still in the tank for Obama. Most recently, you did this by publishing a push poll claiming the public supports Obamacare, when the direct opposite is the truth.

You don't think people will notice?

Trust once lost is not easily regained.

Sarah's decision to grant Oprah an interview, will do nothing to regain the trust of those that Oprah rejected with her support for Obama during the last election cycle.

But, the interview does give Sarah an opportunity to speak with an audience that until now has been highly misinformed, no thanks to the misreporting of the Democratic media establishment.

Sarah Palin's ghostwriter is Lynn Vincent, whose last book was "Donkey Cons: Sex, Crime and Corruption in the Democratic Party." Palin's rag should be a real non-partisan view of politics, don't you think?

"Sarah's decision to "grant Oprah an interview", will do nothing to regain the trust of those that Oprah rejected with her support for Obama during the last election cycle."

Are you kidding? Palin's "granting" Oprah an interview TO SELL HER BOOK. And gee, didn't Obama win that last election? Yes, he did - meaning that the majority of people voted for him - not the McPalin ticket (thank God!) You Palinistas are so funny!

Hey, maybe you can get tickets for the show so you can kiss the hem of the robe of your priestess... oh wait. Tickets for the Oprah show have to be reserved YEARS in advance. Oh well. Maybe if you wait outside you'll catch a glimpse of Palin's wolf-trimmed parka on it's way to the limo. You simple, foolish people...

Oprah is losing money hand over fist because of her endorsement of Obama. Now she's trying to gain that audience back. I'll watch the the interview with Palin, and that will be the only time I've watched Oprah. I would imagine there are millions like me. Oprah knows what she's doing. Wonder if she challenge Palin in her opposition to Obama....http://cooperscopy.blogspot.com/

I can't wait neither...

In her desperate attempt to remain relevant Oprah will be groveling before the birthers, town-hall terrorists, assorted right-wing wing-nuts and NRA zealots when she meets with Sarah "I quit" Palin.

Can a proposal of marriage to single-but desperately-looking bachelor Rush Limbaugh be next?

Sounds like a marriage made in heaven.
