"Dancing w/ Stars" vs "Idol": ratings battle rages on

[This blog entry has been updated]

Looks like it's going to be another tight ratings race between Fox's "American Idol" and ABC's "Dancing with the Stars" this week.

Monday's "Dancing," in which eight of the celebs and their professional dance partners did the tango and the rumba -- and Kate Gosselin treated us to another round of moaning and groaning about the tragedy that is her life and then lumbered around the dance floor for a while -- clocked 20.6 million viewers according to early stats.

Last week, "Dancing's" Monday performance show logged about 21 million viewers while "Idol's" Tuesday performance night logged 20.8 million viewers when the dust had settled.

Working in "Idol's" favor this week: it's lead-out is the highly touted return of "Glee." Also, last year's "Idol" breakout star (though not winner) Adam Lambert is this week's guest mentor on "Idol's" Tuesday performance night -- which you and I might think would help goose the singing competition's ratings. But "Idol" exec producer Ken Warwick thinks it's the other way around -- they're bringing Lambert back on to the show to help out Lambert.

"It kind of upsets me that at the moment he's not doing quite as well..." Warwick said recently of Lambert in an interview with celebrity suck-up mag Entertainment Weekly, adding, "it kind of breaks my heart to see someone with that much talent struggle a bit. So hopefully we can do back for him as he can do for us."

Ken is a tool. Adam is not struggling selling 900,000 world wild is hardly struggling, selling out concerts is hardly struggling, having a #8 hit on Hot Ac and a #13 hit on POP is hardly struggling. Being paid to model and design clothing and jewelry is hardly struggling. Adam is doing very well. I hope Simon Fuller present Adam with his 5 Gold Plaques and 1 Platinum Plaque so Ken feels and looks foolish and the haters can well eat crow.

Adam badly hurt himself in the industry's eyes with his poor behavior at the AMA awards. If a newcoming straight male singer had sung badly, behaved as if entitled, then capped it all off with shoving a female dancers face onto his crotch - the - I sort of hate to use the word in this context - blowback - would have been worse.
Adam also has to figure out if he is a Gay Cause celebrity who happens to be a performer, or if he is a talented performer who happens to be gay.

That said, I like his music and performance skills considerably, and I really hoped he would become Idol winner last year. He deserved the win.

The VCR was sold in 1973. Today, most people have some way to record TV programs. These stories of "ratings wars" really are the figment of the imagination of TV writers. I don't miss a minute of any show I want to watch.

Adam Lambert is the only AI contender that's given me chills over the last 5 years - he'll do just fine. As for DWTS, what a pile of rubbish. I liked it for the first 2 years and then it totally jumped the shark. What a dumb a@@ program.

Love how these Adam fans are rewriting history. As of April 7th Lambert sold 580,000 copies of his CD. As for the platinum, it is for Canadian sales, 80,000 for the album, 40,000 if single digital download. The gold in other countries is sometimes only 1,000 copies sold. They are so desperate to prove he's relevant they make up lies. As for his "sold out" concerts, 2 at a casino that holds 950 seats. He's not burning up the scene as they like to proclaim. All spin.

ChrisFord1 - try not to let your emotions shadow the facts. Adam held a MALE dancer's face near his crotch - not a female. DUH!

Adam was terrific as a mentor and I can't wait to see his performance on the results show tonight.

Adam FTW

Way to skew the facts. Gold and Platinum numbers are determined by the country's relative size. So, what's your point? You forget to mention the album went Gold in 14 weeks. Also International sales bring the total to almost double domestic and the album has yet to release in some countries (such as the UK). Also, it was estimated that about 65% of the American Idol tour ticket sales last year were Adam fans. So, if you don't like the guy, or his sexual preferences, just say it. Don't skew the facts to make an ineffective argument.
