"American Idol" crowns a winner tonight......

After five months of competition, tweener girls have cast their final votes. Tonight we find out if they've elected another safe rocker guy to be the next American Idol, or have instead come out of their haze and voted to crown the more talented busker chick Crystal Bowersox this year's winner.

Meanwhile, all America -- okay, at least 20 million of them -- will watch anxiously to see what Paula Abdul will do/say/wear when she makes her triumphant return to "Idol" tonight -- two days after CBS announced it was tailoring a new dancing competition series for her?

And will Simon Cowell (who apparently had the last of his teeth removed this week, judging by his critiques of Safe Rocker Guy, aka Lee DeWyze's worst-ever performances Tuesday night) break down and cry like a girl when they give him a very special send-off?

We're blogging tonight, right after the show....

Way too much time on your hands.

Clearly your medulla is beginning to deteriorate.

Jeez, what a mistake. Lee is booooring. By next year everyone will be asking, "Lee who?" Bowersox sings rings around him and is far superior.

Lee won! Good! The reason he won is that it is Idol, and more than a singing contest. Lee grew throughout the contest and was the humble Everyman with tons of artistic talent people could root for.
Crystal was good, but didn't get better, and came off sort of like a hippie throwback.
Crystal losing was a minishocker, but not the shock of the orchestrated ouster of Siobhan, or the Elimination to get the Round 12 Finalists that saw the massacre of Alex Lambert, Lily Scott, and Katelyn Epperly.

Did like seeing Siobhan and Aaron, the seasons' strongest pure voices, starting with a duet.
(OK, add BM and give the fat man his due as the 3rd "voice". And Crystal as decent).

Wish Magnus and Kelly just did the whole thing, as they had a sweet restrained start I thought would bust into the two's power-singing, but of course the 2 living BeeGees had to be there.

Siobhan looked beautiful. But I repeat myself.

Hope the time with Barry Gibb might lead to some benefit to Siobhan down the road. She's memorable and face time with the guy that worked with Celine Dion and produced Streisands later mega-hit albums is not a bad thing.

The girls number was very good. Paige Miles, Crystal, and Siobhan were standouts. Katies big voice also stood out but it wasn't in harmony. Big props especially to Crystal, who lacked the time to rehearse that Siobhan and Paige had, but still nailed her parts.

And Paula - she was great and just reminded everyone of what a great contribution she made to Idol. Making it far more watchable, entertaining, and getting the contestants to perform their best.
Abdul won't be back, but was better for the show, the viewers, the contestants doing stand out performing - than both Dioguardi and Degeneres together.
